Husband & Son want to do this now

We're all chunky...well dh is more then chunky.

Our older son is 13 could stand to lose maybe 20lbs, maybe. I don't like the idea of restricting his calories to 500, even if it is every other day.

I was hoping he would have made the middle school baseball team because they practice every day and that would have done the trick, I'm sure.

What do you think?

Perhaps 1000 cals on dd??? Or even, as he only has 20lbs and will hopefully be getting some good exercise in. How about MD/UD rotations??

I wouldn't restrict him too much as he's still developing. I think a great way to introduce the alternate day concept would be to just have him make healthier choices one day, then eat as he would normally the next day, and alternate without any emphasis on calories. Once he sees results, he may naturally gravitate toward the better choices on UDs and DDs (as many of us here do).

His age right now is a critical stage in his development with regards to how he sees himself. It would be great if he can lose the weight without feeling like he has to starve himself in the process. So tricky with teens! Good luck!

In our discussion about this he told me he wants to be lighter so he can run faster. I told him if he ran more he'd get lighter & could run faster.... LOL

For the first time in my life I wish I could run (knee surgery & now herniated discs) because I'd wake his butt up & run every day with him.

Good ideas!! Teach him healthy eating as opposed to calorie restriction!!

So we're doing just like you guys suggested with ds and he seems happy.

Dh on the other hand is a grump beyond all grumps about down days.

But he's down 6lbs already. 2 DD, 1 UD and he's down 6lbs.

"I don't see how it's sustainable" I told him it's not. Tomorrow he may weigh up a pound or two but it will average out.

I don't know what DD calorie number your DH is holding to on his Down Days, but he may be able to lose weight very, very well without having to hold to quite as low a number as most of us do. For example, he might have 700 calorie DDs and do just fine, etc.

And make sure he knows that this part is only the *work* portion of the plan, where he will turn himself into a healthy and gorgeously slim and trim man, and then he won't have to do DDs that are nearly as low in calories. So it's *Oh, So Very Worth It!*

Also keep in mind that the 20% on the calculator is only ONE of the options for weight-loss. We usually all choose it because it will help us lose faster. But 35% of your UD calories is still weight-loss territory... just slower. The UD calculation stays the same; it's based on your age, weight, and height. It's the DD calculation that changes based on weight loss or maintenance.

For instance, my UD number is 2239, but my DD number ranges from 448 (20%, and what I aim for) to 1343 (60%, or maintenance mode).

Your son may still be able to lose at 35% or 40% of his UD calories, and still give him the benefits of SIRT1 and the nutrition he needs to keep growing.

BTW - dh won the biggest loser challenge at work this week. FOR THE FIRST TIME! They've been doing it for a least 6 weeks.

For now he's going to stick with around 900 to 1000 calories on his down days

My hubby JUDDDs with me, it's awesome because we have the same rotation and help support each other. He's experiencing such health benefits from this...his blood pressure is way down and he's getting his cholesterol checked this week, we're hoping for good numbers. He's also lost weight and not just weight but fat...you can see the loss on him. He's got muscle definition where he didn't before. We saw friends we hadn't seen for a while last weekend and everyone commented on how much weight he's lost--he looks good.

Hopefully the JUDDD magic will kick in for him and the hunger will decrease for him on his down days. DH couldn't skip a single meal on his down days at first--now he often skips breakfast and sometimes lunch. He's doing a great job. He's been doing this about six weeks now.

I think you've gotten good advice on your DS, except to say that I find that exercise doesn't help me lose weight at all. If I don't modify my diet, I stay the same or even gain when I'm doing lots of exercise, even strenuous exercise! Even when I was 275, and rode my bike 1,000 miles in one year, my weight never changed. My hunger kicks in and I eat more to offset the calories burned. I have to decrease my food intake, no two ways about it.

I really dislike how easy it is for men to lose weight! Just not fair!! On the other hand, to him on the 6 lbs and so glad you figure out a way for DS to do this and still be happy, lighter and healthier!!

My DF will be joining us soon, he just doesn't know it yet!! When we move in together he will be eating DD meals with me!
