DD tip - freeze dried fruit/baby food

I feel like a bit too much of a newbie to be dishing out tips, but what the hell!

I read an email from Hungry Girl the other day about some childrens food being great for dieting - so I cautiously checked out the baby isle yesterday.

Found some great things - pots/squeezy cartons of fruit puree, biscuits, etc. nearly all of which are under 40 cals a portion.

And the best of all was freeze-dried fruit (sold as fruit 'crisps' or probably chips in the us!). I picked up a pack of apple ones and some banana ones (both 38cals/pack) and they are great to munch on. I added the apple ones to my stewed rhubarb this morning for some crunch.

Thought this might be helpful for those who are cautious about counting their own calories in case of error. Also the vast majority of childrens food is made without any nasty additives and no added sugar.

Have fun!

Good idea! I like the idea of the pure food. Why do we feed good, clean, healthy food to babies and then when they grow up a little we feed them happy meals? Interesting philosophical thought for the day.

I'll have to check this out!

Thank you for bumping this. Very interesting...

So I just had a strange thought. When I was 2 1/2 and my sister was being baptized, my mom gave me a box of Gerber iced baby cookies to keep me quiet during the baptism. Something imprinted my brain about being good/being quiet/comfort with those cookies because as I got older, I craved frosted cinnamon sugar pop tarts because they tasted exactly like those cookies. And I craved them all the time. I don't buy them these days unless I'm in a totally weird emotional state and then I go to the convenience store where they sell them in just a package of 2, but it's still super high cal and I'm doing my best to dial down the emotional eating over time since that's how I packed on the pounds to begin with.

Now, granted, I don't even know if they sell those kind of baby cookies anymore (I was 2 1/2 in 1970!!! LOL.) but maybe I'll go check out the baby food isle and if they do have something similar, it would be a heck of a lot better than regular pop tarts if I was still having a weird emotional craving.

Thoughts anyone?

I tasted those fruit crispy things when my nephew used to eat them. They were good. In the healthfood store they have a similar "adult" package of them but they are at least a buck each and sometimes more. I don't know if it would be cheaper to get the kiddie ones.

I went into the babyfood section the other day, and it all seemed pretty expensive to me.

Oh, this reminds me.... as older kids (like including teen age years), my siblings and I would beg my mom to buy the Gerber's lil' meat sticks! (they look like little Vienna sausages). Our cats liked them too!

Wow, I had forgotten those! I loved them too. My brother is 4 years younger than me, and I remember enjoying them well into my elementary school years. I think my mom did finally promote us to Vienna sausages, but those just weren't quite as good. Thanks for the blast from the past!
