Don't panic...let JUDDD work its magic

I know there are many newcomers to the JUDDD plan and I wanted to share something that I thought might be helpful. It's something that I think we all learn the longer we are JUDDDing, but at first it may not be something we can wrap our minds around and can make us crazy or overly-obsessive unnecessarily.

Your weight on the scale is NOT always directly correlated to the number of calories you ate the day before. This is likely why we sometimes see losses after our UDs and gains after even the best of DDs.

Just because you had a great loss after an UD of xxxx calories one time, does not make that your magic number. The loss on the scale could be due to something you ate or did 3 or 4 days prior. I would always look for a pattern of losses at xxxx number of calories before I decided that a certain number was really my magic number.

I would hate for someone new to get frustrated when they step on the scale after an awesome DD and see a bounce up and think, "what the heck am I doing wrong?" When the fact is, you're likely doing everything right.

It's not like strict LC where, if I had a cheat day I'd immediately see it on the scale the next day and have to make an immediate shift back to strict LC in order to get back on-plan to make it work. With JUDDD, you just keep working the plan day after day, and the magic starts to happen. Even when we have the occasional Up Up and Away Day...you may see that show up on the scale and you may not. That's the magic of JUDDD!

We just have to learn that over time the bounces will all head in the right direction and that we don't need to panic and make changes immediately after seeing a scale number that went in the "wrong" direction one day.

ETA: I posted part of this on another thread, but thought the idea might help more new JUDDD BUDDDs, so that's why I started a thread.

I so agree Andrea. I posted somewhere about the scale bounces. PATIENCE I believe is key to this diet plan. I have only been doing JUDDD since the first of January but the scale is now bouncing less and less. So it isn't an instant thing. My loss is SLOW and with LC (back when it worked) was fast. One pound per day most days compared to one pound per week on JUDDD. But there is really no comparison. I did LC for MANY years and the deprivation was my downfall. I can't eat bread, I can't have cornbread, sorry no dressing for me. It reached the point where I just didn't want to do without my favorite foods for the rest of my life. JUDDD answers that and if I lose weight in the process, so much the better.
I am in my third month and I am now down 14 pounds and my cravings for anything that I could not eat for the past almost 10 years has gone away. I am under control, I am enjoying my carbs and GOO GOO CLUSTERS on my UD's and sticking to my calorie level on my DD's and doing quite well.
Tweaking should not even enter the picture (in my opinion) for the first few months. You body has to adjust. Some just take longer like mine did.
Don't PANIC, have PATIENCE!!

Good thread! I knew myself well enough in the beginning that I only weighed once per week for the first 6 weeks. When I started weighing daily, I had been here long enough to expect the bounces and not be discouraged by them.

I've always been a daily weigher. I *knew* that the scale would bounce, and I think many newcomers *know* that it will happen, too. We certainly say it enough in here, lol!!

I'm hopeful that this thread discourages the urge to tweak right away in response to those bounces. Find your numbers, use your numbers. Thou shalt not tweak thine numbers in response to a "yucky" bounce.

What a WONDERFUL thread and so very true!! I think people expect to see losses everyday (I did ) and when that scale bounces all over the place, as is the tendancy with JUDDD they just figure "it's not working" and jump ship.

JUDDD takes time to kick in, and the scale bounces, as us "vetern" JUDDD BUDDDs know. Charting your weight is the best thing to do to see the trend and understand the "bounce".

I would suggest these 2 links for some more info:

The Scale, She "BOUNCES"!!

JUST GIVE IT A CHANCE, 2 WEEKS IS ALL!!

Andrea!

Even though I lost quickly in WLM (and I didn't have a lot to lose at that time) even I would get impatient when 3 or 4 days would go by with bouncing up - up or even no loss at all.

Now that I've been JUDDDg longer and am well into maintenance (and lost 10# without meaning to - oops! ) I have come to be much more relaxed about bouncing. Sure, I don't enjoy seeing the number on the scale go up, but I know it won't stay up. I know it's due to processes going on in my body, and if I stay patient it will go back down. As long as my measurements are the same, I'm happy knowing I'm not really gaining again. It's phantom gain, lol.

I think it's why so many of us in maintenance chose a RANGE on the scale to let our weight bounce up and down in, because we have come to understand we are not likely to just stay at one set number all the time, especially on JUDDD.

I used to lose after DDs and go up a little after UDs, but in maintenance I've noticed I can go up or down after either. I also tend to have less drastic bounces since I'm eating at a maintenance calorie range.

Awesome thread! And one I needed to read. I was one of those newbies the other day trying not to panic and bail due to a weekly weight gain of one pound. Not only does the next day's weight not reflect what I ate the previous day all the time, due to being a woman I get all those lovely biological imbalances that can make the scale do crazy things. Which I believe contributed greatly to my jump on the scale the other day!

I have always been a daily weigher and I "know" it will bounce. It's just sometimes hard to see the big picture when I get in the "I want it off and I want if now!" mode.

Thanks for all the encouragement!

Kim

Its hard to not get frustrated when the scale does the "ping pong ball in a tornado" act, but patience is the key.

I am the same way, only .2 loss last night after a DD and here I am thinking "it MUST be the salt I ate from the pickle!" Guilty of panic reactions here!

This is an excellent post, Andrea. I absolutely agree that the loss and the gain we see on the scales does not always (and for me frequently does not) reflect what we ate the day before. Up Up and Away days frequently take an extra day or two to show up on the scales, as do really good DDs. Add in water weight and the different numbers of days it may take to release the water weight depending on the causes of that water weight, in addition to what we eat day to day, and there just really is no way to be sure that the number you see when you're stepping on the scales is a result of what you ate the day before.

I think a better way to manage things is to wait long enough (it may be 3 weeks for some, and a few months for others) without making changes and to keep variables constant as much as possible to see a pattern, and then decide if you should tweak. If we were to tweak constantly without knowing the real cause of the ups and downs, how would we even know if that particular tweak/change was really working to fix things or which tweak/change it was that actually worked?

Wow! What a great thread with great posts!! I hope all the newbies come here and check it out.

I'm glad that Pat and some others repeatedly said this is not necessarily a fast weight loss woe. For so many it is and at first I was reading about people losing 10 pounds in a month and wondered what was wrong with me.

But now, day after day, I have experienced the strangely calming effect of just doing the rotations and letting my body settle down. I feel so healthy and I've lost a lot of inches. And, most interesting, my cravings are more for healthy foods now. Yes, I have the occasional potato chip opportunity but I don't feel like I need to eat a whole bag full.

I very much enjoy stepping on the scale every morning and then charting my daily weight on graph paper. Looking at the line on the chart over these last weeks really gives me a sense of accomplishment and helps me see how my body is working.

What a great post.

As women (and I think most of us JUDDD'ing are women), often the scale number has nothing to do with food at all. I bounce at ovulation and TOM, and it can be a couple of pounds. Too much exercise might cause you to retain water. Catching a cold? It can be reflected on the scale.

I very much agree that IF you tweak something, you need to leave it be for 3-4 weeks (especially if you are still pre-menopausal) to gauge the true effect of that tweak. Unless it is obvious that the numbers are just going up and up, then you might change it sooner. But day to day, or even just a week, is not enough time to be able to see a clear picture.

This is so true! I am one that bounces all over the place and have my issues with JUDDD in the beginning. It took me quite a while of trial and error to get in a good groove. Now that i have, i wont be changing the way i am eating again. I was always the one changing my plans all the time!!! My SO couldnt keep up with what i was doing from week to week, no one could. Sometimes it would really mess me up and sometimes i would lose too much weight from too much restriction. It was drivign me and everyone around me crazy. Coming to JUDDD has literally changed my life. Im not near as obsessed about the scale as i was. Im enjoying the way im eating more than i have since i lost my weight. I have found something im sticking to. I have been doing this so long that now everyone even knows my rotation. Im loving that.
This was a great post and very true. I wish everyone could experience JUDDD at least for a couple weeks to see how it really feels and what it does to your body and to your mind. I love it.

And to all the newbies, at least most of us start enjoying our DD's just as much as we enjoy our UD's. I love the feeling of just peacefulness i guess on DD's. Not saying they are all easy. There are times i want to gnaw my arm off and times im not a very nice person to be around but for the most part the DD's are just calming and very detoxing.

^^^^^^^^^^^Every single post is so very true! A little over a year ago when I first discovered JUDDD, I read in every forum I could find about it. None of them were bad , but none were this wonderful and helpful. I already knew I lost slowly, so I wasn't impatient really, but the comment that really hooked me was simply "you are really only dieting every other day." So in the beginning when I lost maybe only 3lbs. in one month, I would just think......Hummmm.....I really lost that 3lbs. in just 2wks!!!! That kept me going for a while and.....THEN.....finding this forum......was like finding...a fabulous gold nugget....that has been invaluable to me! Everything from all the wonderful info about why this works, and why our bodies may do the things they do, to our Bud's own personal struggles ans successes! How great is that? to all the awesome JUDDD BUDS!

AND.....the warmest heartfelt to every newbie!!!

Yes...so much support in here! I rarely even go to the ML anymore because I've found that I just can't take the a) snarkiness among some, and b) conflicting info...who to beleive? Who is right? What should I do?

Pbbt!

In here, everyone is just supportive. Period. We all share one plan...no matter how we choose to implement that plan.

PLUS, we're all happy because we understand the magic. It's almost like we're all in on this one big secret (that we wish everyone knew about).

Tee-hee-hee.

I'm back where I was on 3/8 when I began...BUT I'm down 6 inches! Don't forget to measure when you start the plan. It can make all the difference in a bummed day and a Oh WOW! day. That 6 inches is showing in everything I wear so I can live with the bouncing weight.
Woot Woot!
