I feel like I have been a glutton

The calorie counting that I am diligently doing on my up days has shown to me what a glutton I have previously been. I thought since I was low carbing, the calories didn't matter, just the carbs. But now I see I must have REALLY been packing in a ton of calories.

For today, I really don't feel like I ate all that much, yet there are others who have a hard time eating this many calories on their up days. I could even eat more!

Breakfast was 2 Tbs HWC in coffee, and six slices of uncured bacon.

Lunch was at a health food restaurant where I had sesame ginger chicken in a gluten free tortilla wrap I brought with me, 1/2 cup of coconut rice and some black beans.

Dinner is two short ribs, brussel sprouts, plain, 200 grams sweet potato with 1 Tbs butter

Snack- chocolate

That doesn't seem like all that much to me and yet that is all I am allowed for the day. Before, I would have eaten the whole sweet potato, which was 400 grams, and had butter on the vegetables and potato, and a couple of cups of coffee with HWC.

I must just have an unusually large appetite, but this doesn't even include really carby foods like cookies, ice cream, cake, pancakes and stuff like that.

It is just an incredible eye opener to do the daily calorie counts and explains why I was not losing before.

I know what you mean. I get 2000 calories and some days I think, wow, I used to eat WAY more than I am eating today! It's amazing to think how many calories I must have been packing away before!

I know what you mean about amounts. I weigh everything to measure accurately. Just read Alternate-Day Diet and Dr J really stresses this because we lie/fool ourselves.
I'm always in complete disbelief if someone says they only put a teaspoon of cream in coffee or put a teaspoon of peanut butter on toast. A smear of Pb on an average slice of bread is easily 2 tablespoons for me, and I never put less than 4 tablespoons/2 full ounces of cream in cocoa or coffee. So easy to under record and eat waaaaay more than we tell ourselves.

Same here from a person who used to eat an entire package of oreo cookies, 1/2 bag Doritos plus breakfast, lunch and dinner.

With low carb I was not eating the junk food above but am shocked by how quickly food can add up, especially with a little extra butter, cream here and there.

That's why I like JUDD because I can eat more to satisfaction on my Up Days and still lose. Unlike low carb where I would have to restrict every single day and feel hungry (which I guess is not the norm for many on low carb). Plus I don't have to settle for 1 - 2 pounds month in weight loss.

I know what you mean...I must have been eating thousands of calories on low carb, and wondered why I suddenly gained 20 pounds when I quit smoking last June! I didn't go off low carb, I just ate more of it. The cream, butter, cream cheese, etc all add up really fast as far as calories! Juddd has been an eye-opener to me, but a real blessing, also!

I realized this also when I started counting calories rather than carbs. No wonder I did not lose on LC. I could have easily been eating an average of 3000 calories a day. Yikes.
I also weigh and measure everything I eat. I have measuring utensils at work and keep them on my island here at home. I pour my cream into a T measuring spoon even on UD's. My HWC is 60 calories for one T. Doesn't take long to run up the calories that way.

You are so not alone. Yesterday was an UD for me and I was feeling snarky that I had to make choices and not just eat whatever took my fancy. Before JUDDD I'd grab a few spoonfuls of peanut here, a few ounces of cheese there...wedges of brie...yummy chicken skin....I'm amazed I didn't weigh more!

Today I remind myself that I can have all those things - I can have whatever I want - but it's about eating mindfully today. To be honest, the mindless snacking I used to do can't have been that much fun or I would have paid more attention to the experience.

After 2.5 months on JUDDD, I'm learning, learning, learning, but I still struggle to stick to my UDs!

True for me, too. I'm surprised that I could actually eat as much as I did most days and maintain on low carb. What really did me in was eating off plan sometimes and then having to take that off (of course, would have to start watching calories). I could never really get ahead of the game.

I, too, know what you mean. Although I rarely ate over 2000 on lc and usually under 1500, it's amazing to me that people have trouble eating up to their allotment. Mine is 1700 and I can't believe how fast it adds up, especially since I am a big protein eater. And I miss my beloved butter too many cals!!

I have weighed and measured everything for 12 years.

I keep a measuring spoon by the coffee pot at all times. I use half and half and when I started measuring, I was surprised by how easy it is to use 4 TBLSP! I've gotten used to 1 to 2 TBLSP now and I actually enjoy the coffee much more.

When I did LC it was by Dukan's book. So, I did not eat much fat at all. He really hammers home the idea that even healthy fats like EVOO have a lot of calories, so he urges caution and measuring when using them. And, he really stressed lean meats and fish and poultry and only allows fat free dairy.

I never would give up that half and half in my coffee, though. And, I still lost really quickly. Dr. Oz had featured the Dukan diet on his show and that's when I bought the book. I did the Attack diet for 10 days (had some slip ups along the way) and lost 14 pounds in 10 days! It never came back and I kept losing.

After adding in veggies every other day, the loss slowed down. Then after doing it from August through December I was not losing anything anymore.

That's when I first heard about JUDD. I also track my food intake on the Weight Watcher's site because I just love the on line tracker. One point = appx 40 calories, so it's really easy to figure it out and keep track every day.

Anyway, I know what you mean about the calories adding up so fast. Real eye opener!

I am also a big eater, with an appetite that can be epic at times, lol.

I, too, struggled to not creep up the scales because although everything was low carb, the calories could add up fast. With JUDDD, I still feel like I get to eat a lot, but I'm more mindful of cutting calories where I can. For example, I've started using Whipped Butter in the tub instead of the real deal some of the time. It's half the calories, but still the yummy, healthy butter I love.

I also have realized that I don't eat as much cheese. I tend to choose other, less calorie-dense foods now. I've had to adjust my thinking about getting the most bang for my calorie buck. I still splurge and eat wildly caloric things sometimes, but I know exactly what I'm doing and how it will fit in with the rest of my day.

I know for a fact that the first time I started LC I got the appetite suppression for sure! Lost all my weight in 4 months and kept it off almost 3 years. Fast Forward 3 years later and it was all back on!!

After losing about 10 pounds i couldn't budge!! Even though the appetite suppression may have kicked in... I think I was ignoring it and just continued to eat! Cheese! Cream! Butter! YUMMM!!! This whole experience has been a true eye opener for me!
My choices are better now and I look forward to goal and maybe having a FD once a week!!

Great to know I am not alone! I just like to eat- and it was all LC so I thought it didn't matter!!!

I'll join this club. Though I was never on lc for more than 3 weeks at a time and overeating during that time was usually not a problem for me. Any other time I was 'dieting' I was pretty good about tracking calories and sticking to my plan. But on my non-dieting days I could really eat. Still can if/when I let myself. And I do sometimes. *sigh* I just love too many foods that are triggers for me...wondering if that urge will ever go away. :/

I agree. When I was on Atkins the first time, I lost ALL my weight and was even dramatically underweight (BMI was lower than an olympic swimmer!) by eating over 3000 cals per day.

How is that even possible? Kind of blows the whole calorie theory out of the water, doesn't it?

That said, it only worked once and never worked like that ever again. Further attempts at LC were fruitless. I had the golden shot and blew it - because Atkins is not a good plan for long term health. I'm all for cutting out the white stuff but eating frankenfoods and all that fat can't be good for anyone. Anyway it always boggled by mind how I got anorexically thin eating 3000 calories per day!

I feel like a glutton on every UD! YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!! DDs help balance that feeling out. I don't like being hungry, but when I think to myself, "yesterday, you ate what you wanted and tomorrow you will eat what you want - this is your balance!" It makes me feel better. I don't like eating low cal/low fat foods (few exceptions), so I try to just eat less of regular foods. I find that is a better balance for me and my body.

I completely understand. I never had appetite suppression doing just plain low carb or vlc. I did lose some of my weight the first time doing strict low carb around 4 yrs ago, but still I didn't get anywhere near goal then either. When I restarted last year, I couldn't lose even 1 lb in 5 months time of vlc! I also tried all the tweaks and all the recommendations, and nothing worked.

Of course, after starting JUDDD and having to count calories meticulously, I realized that I had been consuming insanely high amounts of calories every day while doing vlc. It didn't help that I love most healthy whole fat naturally low carb food out there. I could eat a lb of bacon in one sitting, or drown myself in scary amounts of raw milk cheese, grassfed butter, hwc, avocados, coconut oil, chicken skin, fatty ground beef/lamb, offal, etc. Honestly, I could even overeat meat and eggs at times. I always hear people saying they can't possibly overeat meat and eggs. Well, I wasn't one of those people, unfortunately. So yeah, appetite suppression was a fairy tale to me back before I found JUDDD.

After starting JUDDD and getting adjusted, appetite suppression finally kicked in, and though it's not there every single day, it's there enough to make me realize that I was seriously overeating before. Actually what I'm thinking of as appetite suppression right now is probably what normal people feel all the time, but to me it just seems like appetite suppression since I'm not wanting to constantly eat more more more. I've learned so much about recognizing my own hunger and being aware of things about my own body on a daily and monthly basis, and I never knew any of that stuff while doing just vlc. I still eat fairly low carb, but JUDDD is what really helped me form a normal relationship with food. I keep hearing that from many of you, and it really is true for me as well.

to everyone here! Enjoyed reading this and all the warm responses.

I'm one who had grand appetite suppression on LC (except around certain Tom when I was ravenous), but I lost so very slowly on it, especially as the months went by. Toward the end it was taking 3 or 4 weeks to lose a pound.

While vLC had it's lessons for me and some beneficial things, the thing is that vLC - done long term, just wasn't agreeing with me. At first I felt really good on it, but as time went on, I was getting a little tired and my mental/emotional state wasn't as good. It was after coming to JUDDD and adding back carbs that things perked up for me.

But while I had appetite suppression on vLC (usually ate around 900 - 1200 calories daily which is much lower than my UDs on JUDDD), I think it was too little calories for my body to feel comfortable with, and to allow shedding of fat. It may have been putting me into a type of "starvation mode". So though I felt full, beyond satisifed on fatty, protein foods with very little carb, it wasn't supplying me with enough calories or enough of the important carbohydrate to kickstart my metabolism and let me lose fat.

JUDDD has certainly been a learning experience. I'll echo what many have said about JUDDD helping me understand my body and types of hunger so much better.

As you get further and further into JUDDD and even on into maintenance, you will start to trust yourself more. Yes there will be times I can ravenously throw down enough food for a linebacker, but my body seems to balance that out sooner or later with a calm, quiet stretch of eating.

And as I've gone deeper into maintenance, it gets better as far as the sirtuin enzymes and whatever other beneficial chemicals this woe produces building up. Example is fat-burning while muscle-sparing. This is so important for health and also preventing the "skinny-fat" look. And another effect has been actually eating a whole heckuva lot more food most days in maintenance than I did in weight-loss mode, while not only maintaining but actually still losing weight! So I'm hoping that is true for everyone as the months roll by on JUDDD!

MAINTENANCE since 11/12/11, & have lost more weight. I shake things up all the time with my version of Pirate Jenny's MUDDD, my "Fast 5" & other IF. ...low-moderate fat....and eating "healthy" foods 75+% of the time which lets me have real life and indulgences too I've reached my goals, improved my health & appearance, and enjoy my lifetime woe!

Yes, this! I was so grouchy for some reason while doing just vlc. Adding back some carbs and raising my carb level a bit really helped pick up my mood and I feel better in general!
