DD Food Finds

I know we have our DD staple thread but I thought it would be cool to start a DD Food Finds for things that we are coming across, buying and using to help make DDs easier, more filling, and gives us good bang for our calorie buck! Please add your latest DD food finds here!!

I'll start: I found Lite Matzo crackers which I'm going to use to make matzo ball soup. The brand is Yehuda Matzos and they are a whole wheat/bran matzos and each one has 85 calories. I figure I can get several matzo balls with one cracker made into matzo meal, using egg beaters, a bit of minced onion and spices. Add this to a can of fat free chicken broth for 10 calories and I'm looking at about 100 calories for a BIG bowl of soup. Add some chicken and I got a nice DD meal for under 200 calories!!

Dannon Oikos Greek Nonfat Yogurt. Nice, clean ingredients...Cultured Grade A Nonfat Milk. 5.30 oz...80 cals! I just LOVE the taste of this! AND at $1.00 a yogurt, on sale, I'm a happy camper!!

Hellmann's dijonnaise @ 5 cals per teaspoon, nice sub for mayo when you don't need a lot. I use it for my dd chicken salad or baked chicken (salt and pepper then spread 1T dijonnaise w/1tsp parmesan cheese on a chicken breast and bake).

GG fiber crackers. 12 calories for a BIG cracker--gross on their own, but with 1/2 a laughing cow lite and some SF jam, you get a very filling treat for less than 40 cals

Trader Joe's split pea soup is often my go-to dinner on DD's. The whole can is 150 calories and it is sooo filling. Sometimes I slice a 40 calorie hebrew national hot dog into it--great dinner for 190 cals.

one more: Juanita's mexican hominy. 60 calories for 1/2 cup. With some butter spray, salt and pepper it is so yummy and filling! I've been known to have a full cup and a half for dinner with a little protein. Carby but filling.

My new favorite down day dinner is veggies with hummus. Trader Joe's has several kinds of hummus. The lower calorie ones are the Eggplant, Roasted Garlic, and Spicy flavors. They are 35-50 cals per 2 T serving. I eat it with lots of raw veggies for dipping and it is very filling.

And if I eat lots of veggies on a down day, I feel less guilty about the junky carbs I endulge in on an up day.

Ahem....uuuuuummmmmm....there are LITE MATZO CRACKERS? Why have I missed this?!?!?!? What a fantastic invention!

I haven't found any DD staples, besides protein shakes, which, frankly is a cop out since I drink them because I want lots of protein for appetite suppression for little calories.

I did see that at Costco, they offer a big pack of chicken that I *think* are cut thin. (not full breasts) but I couldn't tell by the packaging. *If* they are, I think that would be a geat DD staple for me....grilled on the foreman grill. I love chicken as long as it has a fun side dish!

I will say, I think I've been sleeping on protein shakes for my DDs. I made one yesterday:

Dinner
Bob's Red Mill - Whole Ground Flax Seed Meal, 2 tbsp 60
Protein Powder - Whey Natural Flavor - Biochem, 1 scoop 80
Hershey's - Special Dark Cocoa Powder, 15 grams 30
(Splenda packet)+ 6 ounces of black coffee + SF Davinci Hazelnut Syrup

Total Cals: 170 cals.
Yummy.....and I was stuffed for the evening.

Sugar free sweet gherkins - label says 3 for 0 calories! If you just need a quick munch or a flavor burst this is it!

I also love raw veggies with or without a dip - surprising how full I can get. I was starving yesterday afternoon, ate a handfull of baby carrots for 35 cals, and calmed that monster right down.

Progresso Light Soups - most are 80 calories for 1/2 the can - which puts the whole can (a more reasonable serving size) at only 160 calories.

Any recipe staples? I'm more of a "make your own food" kinda person.

I think soups/stews are the easiest because they are "all in one" type foods and easy to make low cal. Plus, the broth is a good appetite suppressant.

I made a tuscan chicken soup that worked. I also made a veggie beef soup (I call the kitchen sink - I throw every veggie I have in there) that was really good and filling.

Bagged cole slaw mix!! I regularly use it to make a bacon/cabbage stir-fry, but sometimes will use chicken or shrimp as the protein. Tons of variations, of course, in the cabbage/chicken/cheese thread. You can also mix it raw with low-cal dressing and other veggies for sort of a chopped salad kind of meal.

2% cottage cheese. I have it with Maple Grove sugar free syrup (fat free just tastes so awful)

SF Jello cups with Reddi Wip for my sweet tooth

Newman's Own Lite Low Fat Sesame Ginger Dressing (35 cals 2 tbsp). It's so potent though, you get away with less.

Sonoma Jack's cheese wedges - 20 cals (instead of Laughing Cow's 35.)

Gorton's makes a grilled tilapia in the frozen section. 80 cals each for 2 servings in a box. Having both makes a nice sized dinner portion for 160 cals.

Lean Cuisine Salmon with Basil - Wild salmon,whole wheat orzo pasta,spinach & carrots in a basil sauce. 210 cals

Pepperidge Farm Light bread 45 cals a slice.

Oscar Mayer Deli Selects Mesquite/Smoked/blah blah Turkey. 2 oz is around 45-50 cals.

Those are my brand name go-tos.

You reminded me - I like the babybel light cheeses! You can get them at Costco too. 1 round is 50 cals and 1 carb, I believe. 2 are a great snack with half and apple!

I haven't tried it yet, but picked it up tonight and it looks great!

Trader Joe's Shrimp Stir-Fry
Serving size 1 3/4 cups for 70 calories!
Servings per package: 2.5
Less than 200 calories for the whole bag!

Broccoli, farm-raised uncooked shrimp, sugar snap peas, water chestnuts, bean sprouts, red bell peppers, and gourmet pepper seasoning.

I may be making this for lunch tomorrow if I can remember to take it to work!

Borden Fat Free American Singles @ 30 cals per slice. I hate ff cheeses but this one tastes good and melts normally.
Natures Own Double Fiber whole wheat bread @ 50cals per slice. (I was using the 100 calorie sandwich thins, but why? they're more expensive and smaller than this regular sliced bread!)
Joseph's low-carb pita breads @ 60cals each.

Did grocery shopping today and saw that MorningStar had a veggie chili bow for 110 cals.

I'm more of a make it myself foodie. I did find a great recipe for a shrimp creole in Marlene Koch's "Eat What You Love" cookbook for 145 cals and pretty light on the carbs. I'll post it on the recipe thread. It made 5 generous serviings. She also has a lot of other great recipes applicable for DDs.

I wish I could find the Morning Star Veggie chili bowl, sounds good!

Thanks for the ideas, went grocery shopping today and picked up the Dannon Oikos! Can't wait to try it. I also love the Light soups, both the Italian and Southwestern are good, both brands-Progresso and Campbells.
Picked up the Philly Swirl "ice cream" bars
Once again ordered from Netrition and forgot something!! The GG crispbread.

But I did pick up the Wasa crackers today.

Special K Cracker Chips! I these for that salty/crunchy taste craving on a DD. 110 calories for 27 chips, nice sized chips, too! I use 1/2 a serving for 55 calories with a little "dip" of 2 TBS FF sour cream with spices added for a total of 70 calories for chips and dip!

almost forgot. Picked up la choy stir fry and chop suey vegetables today. 15 calories per 1/2 cup. Low in carbs too!

I saw a brand of Injera (Ethiopian flat bread) that has 40 calories for 7 oz. This has a spongy texture like a big pancake; and a sour dough flavor. My Ethiopian friend prepared for me a traditional meal of wot with the injera, and I thought it was one of the most delicious meals I have ever had.

Let me second the raves for Special K Cracker Chips! Odda my goodness!!!

My new potato chip that has now become a staple on my grocery list.

I can actually eat a sandwich with O/M turkey or ham and either Nature's Own or Arnold thins with them, and when eating it I say.......and, this is a diet?!?!
