Hot tea drinkers, advice please!

I don't like tea. That's blasphemy in the South, but even with a metric crap ton of sugar, I haven't liked it iced OR hot. However, it has been years since I tried it last. I've begun eating things in the last year that I hated previous (pickles & mustard come to mind), so I'm thinking I should give it another go. The coupon for Celestial Seasonings from the paper a couple of weeks ago doesn't hurt either.

What's your favorite? Or a good 'beginner' hot tea?

Celestial Seasonings ~Honey Lemon Ginseng Green Tea &
Honey Vanilla White Tea Chai are great!

One of my very fav teas is a bottled tea, believe it or not! It is "Honest Tea Jasmine Green Energy" and it is truly a treat! It is sort of pricey and I usually go to the Health Food Store or Sprouts to find it, but is no more than buying any other bottled drink and it gives me just the right amount of pep. :)

I'm a huge tea drinker, but can't really recommend a *beginner* tea for you as I've just always like.. tea. I do remember my English babysitter who would always fix me tea in the afternoon when she had hers. Mine was mostly warm milk, with a little tea in it to make it slightly tan, and then sugar to sweeten it. I loved the tea as much as I loved her.

You might like some of the flavored and spiced teas to start with.

What are you drinking now? Is it anything that you could mix about half & half with a brewed tea? To sort of help you make a transition? Are you going to sweeten your tea? Do you think you want it hot or cold?

I sometimes have hot tea in the mornings if I don't choose coffee instead, but I really like it iced the best, and plain. I usually brew a green tea from the Asian store with an English or Irish Breakfast tea, or maybe an Earl Gray, and then pour that double strength tea over ice.

Tea is actually a beverage that I think has health benefits and helps you lose weight. Well, a little bit maybe.

Do you like lemonade? If so, try regular brown or black tea, hot, with lemon and sweetener. I really like it this way. Oddly, I do NOT like it cold like this, but hot, yes. I know, I'm weird.

I don't drink coffee either. I'm a freak. I either drink water, diet soda or crystal light.

Leaning towards hot since I've read many say warm tea or broth helps stave off the hunger some. Probably sweetened would be best, I have splenda, truvia & stevia if need be.

Celestial Seasonings Black Cherry Berry is a great herbal tea that doesn't taste like tea..or herbs, for that matter. It taste like cherries and stuff. It's great hot or iced and would be nice with a little sweetener too.

I like Celestial Seasonings most of the time, as long as it doesn't say "zinger" on it. I find that the zingers are just too tart for me. I am also one of those who has never liked tea, particularly hot, but decided I would try one more time. I have found my favorites to be Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple and Peach Passion (or something like that...peach, anyway). Also, the Mandarin Orange is good.

A local nail store has stevia packaged in teabags. The un processed leaf makes a tea
with a verry slight licorish tast that I kind of like. The leaf contains compounds not found
in the packets just sold as a sweetner that accounts for this flavor and MAY lower blood
sugar and blood pressure. But note I said MAY lower because some studies say it does
and some studies say it doesn't. But while we talk about tea I am suprized no one has
talked about green tea which may speed up fat loss some.

If you like crystal light, look for a flavor that corresponds to one of those you like.
Raspberry zinger or lemon zinger are good for that.
Also many of the celestial seasonings aren't tea at all, they different herbs, flowers and other botanicals, no tea in them:)
For something bolder, go with a "chai" that has cinnamon and peppery tones -doesn't taste like tea at all :)

shirlc 02-20-2012 06:39 AM

I'm not much of a tea drinker either, but I really like iced Crystal Lite Raspberry Green Tea or hot oolong tea when eating out at a Chinese restaurant.

KeirasMom 02-20-2012 06:55 AM

I love almost all teas. I drink plain black iced tea, unsweetened, all day long. Lately, if I want hot tea, I have a cinnamon apple with just a tiny bit of sweetener.

I have really been enjoying Rooibus teas lately, I have one right now from Imperial Organic called Cinnamon Rooibus. I put just a tad of Stevia Glycerite in it and it is awesome. I have another one called Orange, Ginger Rooibus and it is equally good. To me Rooibus teas are just a tad sweet which I prefer in a hot tea.

When I first moved to Texas I will never forget seeing waitresses bringing out these humongous glasses of iced tea, I couldn't believe it the size of those glasses, still can't. Yep, they are pretty hard core down here about their iced tea - I am not a fan of iced tea either but I am getting to where I love hot tea.

i was never a tea or coffee drinker before hcg. and i learned to love celestial seasonings 'sweet coconut thai chai' decaf. also 'vanilla ginger chai'. no i dont add milk.

mattsmama 02-20-2012 11:20 AM

Yerba Mate is really nice, but a bit pricey. You can make it in a french press, or you can buy it in tea bags. I recently got some Mate Chocolate by Guyaki that I LOVE!!

If you decide to get some, the water should only be 150 degrees when you pour it over.
Steep for about 5-10 minutes.

This is a very healthy drink from South America.

gharkness 02-20-2012 12:40 PM

I've been curious about this. How much chocolate flavor does it have?

b_lou_who 02-20-2012 12:47 PM

I love black tea...just a purist.
I cannot stand herbals unless taken medicinally :) And green tea smells/tastes like old dead fish to me.
Numi makes some lovely organic blacks (like the decaf black vanilla) if you need tea bags (I use them at work).
I order bulk loose good organic blacks in regular and decaf, but then I am addicted to the ritual of tea.
Love a round tea tray with a pretty tray cloth, a gorgeous warmer with tea light, a pot bellied tea pot and strainer, a bone china cup and saucer. AAAAAH. heavenly.

Dottie 02-20-2012 12:50 PM

Tazo Zen is a really nice minty green, too :)

Mommie22boys 02-20-2012 01:15 PM

I'm not a huge tea drinker...I so  love  my coffee. That said, right now I am enjoying a cup of coconut cocoa tea with a Tbls of h&h and some sweetener. I dislike when tea tastes like..."tea." Lol.

Well, not really like hot chocolate or anything. Very natural. Kind of "earthy" if that makes any sense. I did add a dash of 1/2 and 1/2 when I made it and poured it over ice, and it was delish!!!
I did not need any sweetener of any sort with it, but I am not a fan of super sweet food and drink anyway.

Jenn_in_NJ 02-20-2012 02:25 PM

Try one of the Celestial Seasonings Sampler packs.

We have a coffee/tea machine at work and I started liking Earl Grey and Lady Earl Grey. They have a little citrus taste and are very good, but I like tea.

Hot tea, coffee and chicken broth have helped me get through many hunger pangs, especially on HCG. I rely on my coffee in the afternoon on my down days.

SummerAnne 02-20-2012 04:36 PM

Thanks for all the input, I've got a list made and the thread bookmarked.

Smilescarlet 02-20-2012 04:45 PM

Peppermint or green tea would be my suggestion.

Beeb 02-20-2012 09:07 PM

Celestial Seasoning Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride Tea. You have to order this online but well worth it! It taste just like a sugar cookie!!! :yummy:

hockey_gal 02-20-2012 11:46 PM

What do you like? What are the flavours of Crystal lite you prefer? You'll find a tea with that flavour :)

I love licorice - so I drink black licorice tea. Hazelnut vanilla, lemon zinger, black cherry...they have a LOT of different flavours for tea now. There are even places that will mix your own tea bags for you!

Have fun experimenting.

laceylady 02-21-2012 07:31 AM

I'm still not a great tea drinker; however, I have been buying "Stash" Spiced Chai and regular Chai. Both are pretty good. I have the Sugar Cookie one also, and various berry flavors. I have to be in the right mood to drink it, but once I have the first cup, I can drink quite a few in a day. I was one that only drank Lipton, and only when I was sick, and had to have buttered toast with it. I've come a long way!!!

Same here- and my toast had to be cut into either three or four
lengthwise strips, depending on the width of the slice of bread.

NOW you've got my attention, lol.

I like jasmine green tea or green tea mixed with peppermint tea (I buy them separate and just steep the bags in the same cup) Very light and nice flavor. Helps with digestion too. I don't put any sweetener in mine. I like the flavor just as it is.

Comfort food- oh yeah!

White teas are nice for beginners because they are not very strongly tea-flavored. I loathe green tea, always makes me think of sucking on alum. Republic of Tea makes a lovely Orange Blossom White. Another one I've served to tea haters is Lindsay's Teas Blanc de Pom Pom, which is a lovely fruity pomegranate flavor and doesn't need any sweetening. Celestial Seasonings makes a couple of flavored white teas as well. What's great is that white tea still has the health benefits of green tea and black tea without the caffeine.
