Thurs. 2/16 & Fri. 2/17...It's a FRENCH UD Party, and You're invited! :)

It's an UD party for all JUDDDsters who want to participate! Best for those who will be having an UD! (but if you can swing it on a DD - you're tres magnifique!) The party will on for two solid days so that everyone gets a chance to join in on their UD and party with us!

This party is FRENCH themed, so bring out your wines, cheeses, fruit, chocolates, artisan breads, duck fat , etc. etc and join us for a French meal (or more than one meal, it's your choice!) We will enjoy our decadence together, mwahaha!

If you miss out on this party for some reason, don't despair! There will be more parties to come at different times and different themes (and probably repeated themes!)

Some other theme ideas for the future: American Cookout (hotdogs or hamburgers, chips, potato salad, baked beans, etc.; Pizza Party; Fast Food Nation (haha!); Italian; Mexican Fiesta; etc. etc. The ideas are endless. We welcome all the ideas for themes and the foods to go along with them!

The French party is in this thread on Thursday, Feb. 16 and Friday, Feb. 17.

Feel free to post anything and everything about it now though, from recipes to shopping list ideas, to whatever you can think of!

Bon appetit!

Sophie, you are so fun!!!! I love this idea and I will be doing it on Friday.

Last year when I was in Paris, the best thing in the world to me was the chocolate croissants. I NEVER tasted something so wonderful in the States before. I am going to see if I can find a bakery that might come close and have cafe au lait, the way they do it, and a chocolate croissant.

I may try making a crepe de noisette. Not sure how to spell it, but a hazelnut crepe. To die for.

Oh and maybe some fois gras. Or those delicious French Macarons !!! yum yum

I am off to do some research and will report back!!

This is such a fun idea! I'll be loading up on gourmet cheeses tomorrow (which is never a hardship for me).

I am happy to report that I am stocked up on goat cheese, fig butter, dark chocolate, and crackers for tomorrow. I may have to buy a baguette and make my artichoke bruschetta. I need to get thinking... French Onion Soup? Vichyssoise? Coq au vin? Hmmmmm...........................

I also want to add another idea to the list: Spanish tapas day!

you too, Kissa, and can't wait to see you at a future party! Feel free to "crash" this one even if you're not eating on theme.

I think this will also be a great way to learn about other cultures and since this is a world-wide community, we'd love to have everyone's ideas, menus and recipes for their own local themed parties we can all enjoy! (British fry-ups for one example I've seen mentioned on here)

I will have to celebrate on Friday since today is an UD for me. Brie will be making an appearance, certainly! I'll also have to get a small loaf of baguette...my favorite brekkie the summer I lived in France was a baguette topped with butter and my host mother's homemade strawberry preserves. AND, my favorite dessert was creme fraiche with the afore-mentioned preserves swirled in. They may not be "traditional" French foods, but those things really remind me of the summer I lived in the French countryside.

Annie, I'd LOVE to hear your fave's! Chime in, girl!

As Ms. Cat has requested:

Artichoke Bruschetta. It's delicious if you LOVE garlic.

1 bottle of marinated artichokes, drained and minced
1 roma tomato (half beefsteak), seeded and finely chopped
1/4 cup chopped red onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4-1/2 cup of fresh grated parmesan
2 tbsp mayo (I think you could do part mayo, part olive oil, as well. You just don't want it too loose).

Toast baguette slices with olive oil. Top with artichoke mixture. You don't have to heat it up, but you can.

There are lots of different bruschetta options though:
Mozzarella, tomato, basil, vinaigrette
Brie, date butter, apple
cheddar and apple
pear, cinnamon and honey
shrimp, tomato, garlic
proscuitto w. figs and marscapone (or cream cheese)
salmon with pesto
smoke salmon, cream cheese, red onion (and caviar for those who like it)
salami with pesto
ricotta with dates and pistachios
garlic mashed white beans and tomato
goat cheese and roasted peppers
goat cheese and mandarin orange slices
goat cheese with figs
goat cheese, tomatoes, garlic
slice of tomato, garlic powder, melted muenster cheese

I'm thinking I may have to save room for an evening snack, which I almost never do. Wine, cheese, fruit, and a baguette with butter sounds absolutely heavenly. Friday's my next up day, so I have a little wiggle room for shopping.

a friend of ours makes the croissants that are in the Williams Sonoma catalogue (and trader joes under a different label)--and he gave us a box for Christmas. Your post reminded me that they are in the freezer! I could defrost overnight for an UD tomorrow--hmmmm. fantastic idea!

I bet you could make a quick croissant type dessert using that frozen puff pastry dough, dark chocolate, and a little sugar.

DBF bought Brie the other day- but was saving it until I get over this cold-
since I can't taste much, it would be a huge WASTE for me to eat it right now.
Maybe I can do homemade bread and we already have some wine in the fridge.
(I LOVE escargot- DBF eats frogs' legs at the Asian buffet every time we go.)

I have had escargot and they were "okay" but not worth having again. I can't seem to bring myself to try frog legs, though DH say's they taste like chicken!

Thanks, DD! I'm going to make a French baguette from scratch tomorrow (I use the "almost no-knead baguette" recipe from King Arthur flour's website) and use your Artichoke Bruschetta on them.

Whoo hoo!!!! at the mention of beignets!! I have Cafe du Monde's Beignet mix and I will make some tomorrow.

If you are going to N'awlins, be sure to go by the Cafe du Monde shop if you can, and pick up boxes of the mix along with the coffee & chicory blend.

Thanks Everyone and welcome to the party!!!!

Here's what I'm planning for tomorrow:

B
-Cafe du Monde coffee & chicory
-small batch of Cafe du Monde beignets sprinkled with powdered sugar

L
-a plate of assorted goodies - haven't figured it all out yet, but cheeses, olives and crackers will be there, along with some fruit.
-French wine... The only French wine I found at Kroger (besides Red Bicyclette which I tried several years ago and blahh - sorry to anyone who likes RB, perhaps I could try it again if someone recs it?) was Georges Dubceuf's Beaujolais-Villages, and it was on sale, so that's what I got. I had most everything else I needed for tomorrow, so this wine was my only real splurge for the party, lol. Sorry for being cheap, guys. I'm sure it will be grand in the company of friends, though.

D
-Classic French Chicken in White Wine Sauce (from Fine Cooking website). Never had this before, but it has some good reviews and looks simple.
-homemade Baguette ("no knead baguette" recipe from King Arthur website) with DD80s Artichoke Bruschetta
-salad

So that's the plan unless someone posts something that I can't live without!

Looking forward to everyone's posts.
