Seriously considering JUDDD, few questions

Hi all, I am here because I kept seeing "JUDDD" in the WOE and saw that a lot of people were having good success. The concept makes sense to me and I am very interested in trying it (with a LC flavor).

First question, how helpful would it be to buy the book? Can I find everything I need online, or is there info that I would be best off reading in the book?

Second, I used the calculator on the JUDDD website, and here are the numbers:

62 inches, 224 pounds, 38 years of age
results in 2090 "normal calories" and 418-732 DD calories (20%-35%).

Would "normal calories" be my UD goal? I am finding the wording a bit confusing.... And 2090 seems high... ? When I am losing weight on a standard low-cal diet it seems like 1700-1800 is a good calorie goal for me. Should I shoot for that on UD, or will the DD restriction make me need that much more calories on UD?

Thanks for any insights you can offer! I'm excited about trying this and working on a shopping list and menu plan!

Welcome Rosaphile! You are going to love JUDDD! The thing about it is that it is so correctable/flexible! I have had a rough start and still lost beyond what I could imagine.

I am 2 in taller and about 25 lbs less, but I have lowered my UD to what seems easier for my metabolism. I will raise it slowly as I go, but for right now I am at 1500. I think Johnson suggested 2400 for me also. I know for a fact that I would have to eat out and carb out in order to get that high.

I am on day 19 and down 7 lbs!

Rosa!

I don't think 2090 is too far out of line. If you want, you can lower it, but I wouldn't knock too much off. Maybe 2000/500 and see how it goes the first week.

I'm 70 inches and 244 ish and I use 2200/500. I'm losing very well at these numbers and have no intention of lowering them until weight loss slows.

I did not buy the book. Everything you need can be found on Dr. Johnson's website and right here. I suggest you read, read, read, and ask any questions you have. This is a very supportive group!

I, too think your calories are just fine as calculated. I would keep those DD calories to at least 500 and maybe a little more and just leave the UD calories alone and PLEASE try to eat up to those UD calories most days and NOT over those DD calories at all.

This ^^^ is what makes JUDDD work the best! Also, read as much as you can from our forum here. Lots of answers to lots of questions you probably have or will have. Do a search for what you are looking for and you will be surprised at all the info you will get on this site.

Hope to see you on board with us soon!

1) The book is only useful if you want more info about the science behind the woe. You can get everything you need to know to lose weight/improve health from the website and - most especially - this forum. Usually, if we need to know exactly what Dr J said, someone like me grabs their copy and shares with the world.

2) On Up Days you want to eat above your weight loss level. If you usually lose at 1700 - 1800, then you do need to start out eating above that level. Up Days balance Down Days and prevent us from dropping into the slowed metabolism trap that has caused so many stalls in the past.

Welcome to the dark side where the party never ends!!!

Thanks everyone! It will be interesting trying to hit 2000 calories on up days. I have been low-carbing for about 2 months now, and eating to my appetite; and although I don't track my calories every day, when I do I find that I am hitting around that 1700-1800 mark. I am secretly feeling a bit gleeful about the idea of "making myself" eat 200-300 calories more! MORE CHEESE PLEASE!

I don't think DDs will be too bad, IF I can make myself go to bed at a reasonable hour. Whenever I stay up past 11pm, I start to feel very hungry and "snacky." As it is I don't usually eat breakfast until 10am at the earliest (right now it is 11:30 and I'm drinking a smoothie for breakfast). I rarely eat lunch since breakfast plus maybe an afternoon snack will easily get me through to dinner. I guess on UDs it is going to be more important to get breakfast in a little earlier....

It seems like staples for successful DDs definitely include the cabbage/protein/low-cal cheese meals - I have been compiling a list of variations, and I think this is going to be awesome for me. I love sauerkraut and will likely sub that in for the fresh cabbage sometimes. Deviled eggs are a favorite - I just need to remember to leave some eggs out to "age" so I can make HB eggs that can be peeled! Most of our eggs are fresh from our chickens and need to sit out for a day or two so that peeling them is not physically impossible. Any other must-have foods/recipes that I have missed?

I think we need a "Like" button like Facebook has.

I weighed 212 on Thursday Feb. 2nd. Yesterday was an UD for me and I weighted 209. This morning I weighed 208.5. I'm not even going to mention what I've eaten between then and now because you won't believe it!

I fully expect to be at a lower number on the scale tomorrow because today is a DD.

This JUDDD has me scratching my head but I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

Hi Rosa!

Just wanted to say

I have only been following JUDDD for one week but so far I have lost 3.7 lbs, more than I ever lost in one week on straight low carb!!

I am absolutely loving this way of eating

I hope you decide to give it a try!

Take care

If you think you can do the DDs - then don't hesitate. This seems to work for most people. I'm at the end of my 5th week - I weighed myself on Tuesday (once a week only for me, others weigh every day) and I'm 13lbs down. In the meantime my UDs have been really quite naughty , although I have noticed that I can't eat big portions of food nowadays. I've been over 2000 calories on every single UD so far, though I'm not counting exactly. However, as you start losing you need to recalculate, as the amount you need will reduce.

I'm absolutely loving this WOE, plus the forum is very active and encouraging.

Go for it!

Bev

Yay another chicken person

Welcome!
We have 30 chic counting a few too many roosters.
In order to not fight boiled eggs.
I just put an inch of water in pan, get it simmering and crack the egg open, put it into hot water, over. In few mins they will be cooked. More mins for the hard boiled. Really savsd time plus, no messing with egg shells, and losing half the egg.

Off-topic, a little bit:

Hard Cooked Eggs

→ Perfectly cooked
→ Easy to peel
→ No green ring around yolks

Bring large saucepan of water to a boil. Add 1 teaspoon salt.

Lower room-temperature eggs into boiling water, using a slotted spoon.
Don't cover the pan- just watch (and adjust heat, if necessary) to make sure water doesn't boil out of pan.
Start timing 14 minutes (don't wait for water to return to boil).

At 14 minutes, remove from heat, and lower eggs, one at a time, into ice water bath (more ice than water, and another teaspoon of salt). Again, use the slotted spoon.

Let stand until chilled, then drain and store in refrigerator.

(I get about one egg out of four or six dozen that doesn't peel perfectly using this method- and age doesn't matter!!)

This is exactly what I do (except I use baking soda, not salt) and it ALWAYS works. Always. And I've got fresh-from-the-chicken-box eggs, too. Same day, no waiting. No frustrating egg-peeling session that has you standing over the sink peeling, mangling, and cursing! Lol!!

Rosaphile and Wild Irish Beth!

Some of my DD faves are beef jerkey, turkey breakfast sausage links (45 calories each), and the 72% cacao Swiss chocolate from Trader Joe stores (1 lg square for 60 calories - really keeps the energy level up/hunger down). Oh, and a vitamin elecrolyte lemonade (15 cals) or a dried apricot half (11 cals) are great for a little boost.

I'm afraid to even post this on the Whooo hooo thread for fear it will disappear, but my waist measures 2 1/2 inches less than it did when I started 3 weeks ago! (FYI I am not one of those people who only has a few pounds to lose)

Oh yes, and like bevonjuddd, my up days have also been "quite naughty". I love the way you put that, Bev!

Which is ridiculous. A rooster I can understand. But a few chickens are less trouble than a big dog or 2.

Thinking about "jumping ship" to JUDDD...
I have a question about UD, DD calroies
Would you calcuate UD for your goal weight or your current weight?
Just seems like if you calcualte it for your current weight, you'd stay there???

From context within the book and from the UD calorie level that is working for me, I say calculate based on current weight.

The magic happens on the restricted DDs. Higher UDs prevent us from going into stall-prone starvation mode. If you have an overwhelming compulsion to reduce calories - do the reducing on DD. Unexpected, isn't it?

Yes!!! it is unexpected...

I have another question- do most of you use JUDDD to maintain weight loss that has happened with atkins or LC'bing?
And how many of you have met goal weights with JUDDD alone?

I ask becuase, this just sounds so tempting... I know 500 cals is hard to do... but other than that, it seems to good to be true.

LC is difficult for me... Couting calories, I think will be more difficult.
IDK.

I am using JUDDD to lose weight. I cannot lose on LC any longer because I am totally sick and tired of depriving myself of too many foods.
When I lost weight 8 years ago I did lowfat LC and lost well but I just don't want to do that again. This I am enjoying. I do 350 DD's and 1750 UD's. It has been easy to do the DD's which surprised me. If there are goodies in the breakroom, I just wrap one up and put it aside for the next UD. So nice not to have to explain why I do not want to try their coconut cream pie or cranberry raisin oatmeal cookies. My loss is much slower than when I did LFLC but that is alright with me. I am not going anywhere. Slow is good.

Hi all. I'm also thinking of switching to JUDDD. I've had good success doing Atkins 72 while my husband's been underway (Coast Guard), but I know once he gets home I won't be able to keep it up. He likes to eat WAY too much and always drags me down with him, ha ha! He needs to lose weight, too, and I'm thinking this diet would be great for him because he doesn't have to be strict every day. He's very good at fasting, does it for about a week every 6 months before weigh-in! Anyway, I'm wondering if someone could explain how to do the 2-week induction? I've heard a bit about protein shakes but that's about it. Thanks in advance!

There's a really informative sticky thread toward the top of the list that you should check out...called something like, "what's JUDDD all about? Come in and see!"...or something like that.

In summary, induction is two weeks of straight Up Day/Down Day rotation. Use a couple of calorie calculators to find your UD number, and many people (Dr. Johnson actually suggests this) set their DD number at 500. Using shakes is merely a suggestion so that calculating what you are eating is both easy and accurate on your DDs. However, you'll find that the vast majority of the JUDDD BUDDDs here don't/didn't use shakes...we just ate food that we very carefully measured and tracked. It's important to stick to your calories on DDs, as that's where we are restricting our calories. It's also important to respect your UD calorie number...that back-and-forth swing from high to low calories is what gets our metabolism really rocking so that we burn calories more efficiently.

My suggestion is to read read read here and ask questions often. There are a lot of great BUDDDs in here who are more than happy to help others find their success.

Welcome and best of luck!!

WOE: JUDDD/PHD, LC now that my BG is getting weird
Start Date: JUDDD 1/1/12 + LCHF 12/1/13 (controlling diabetes)
I lost seven pounds on EFGT then stalled. Eleven pounds lost on JUDDD so far. When I arrive, most of my loss will be JUDDD. I do stick close to lc because I really like and feel good on lc. But, if I want starchy, I eat starchy.

DDs really should get easier over time. Many people do get appetite suppression which is an enormous help on DD ( and a real **** on UD if you don't feel like eating). Just as important, read the recipes and advice. Experiment. It is possible to eat a very satisfying volume of food and stay around 500 calories on DD.

Dr J suggested shakes as a way to keep honest while getting used to DDs. And shakes are fine for them that like 'em. But, I don't think Dr J really understood how honest and determined those of us who want a healthy wol and a woe that loses weight then transitions smoothly into stable maintenance can be.
