Fiber Calories?

do you subtract those? Taken from something I just read:

"Some dietitians argue that since the body doesn’t burn fiber, fiber Calories can be subtracted. So, take for example a breakfast cereal that has 130 Calories and 9 grams of fiber per serving. If a Calorie counter is subtracting his or her fiber Calories, she'll be able to mark that meal as 94, instead of 130, Calories. I still do low carb and I subtract fiber from my carbs to get net carbs but I don't subtract them from my calories.

I'm asking because I'm trying to find reasons as to why I'm not losing. Once I got off LC my fiber intake went through the roof. I had the worst stomach pains my first couple of days because my body just wasn't used to getting so much fiber. I eat tons of fruits and veggies, whole grains, heck I even use splenda with the fiber added in. I don't subtract any calories I take in due to fiber though.

Am I over calculating my calories for the day because I'm not subtracting the amount I get from fiber?

I have never heard of it before. I count all calories but I don't eat a lot of fiber.

Start Date: eating lowcarb since 2005
I dont count the fiber in carbs but i dont adjust my calories for it except for things like gluc and oat fiber. I also have to watch how much fiber i eat but i do eat quite a bit. I limit the oat fiber and anything from wheat cause it will mess up my tummy. I can eat some wheat bread and be ok but i have to limit it to those 2 pieces and no more for the rest of the day. My tummy actually likes white bread better so im thinking about switching to eating sourdough or something like that and get away from the wheat. There are a ton of people who are really sensitive to wheat so you may think about that but for deducting the fiber from calories i dont but i do from carbs.

Hmmm....interesting question. My first reaction is to say, count all your calories. I was told long ago not to eat back my exercise calories, and this reminds me of that. Calorie calculators have figured your numbers, so eat to those numbers, period. Don't eat back your fiber calories.

OTOH, so many here like to use glucomannan powder to make, for example, gluc pudding. Why? Because it is calorie-free. Why is it calorie-free? Because it is completely all fiber. Seems like maybe there is some merit to the "fiber calories don't count" train of thought.

However, I just can't believe that of all the calories we eat from fiber are just free. That could be a significant percentage for some of us. If that were the case, why would any of us who rely on counting calories be losing weight properly? We'd all be eating too much.

So with that said, I still land on the side of the fence that says don't eat back your fiber calories. If you are not losing anything at all, I would look to other reasons (too much guesstimating, not weighing foods for accurate counting, not having my UD/DD numbers calculated quite right for yourself, not truthfully respecting your numbers,etc...) first.

My understanding is that there's soluble and insoluble fiber which I believe means digestible and not digestible. If you were to be 100% accurate, you could subtract the fiber that your body can't digest, but you have to keep the calories for the fiber your body uses. It's too much math for my poor addled brain, so I count whatever calories the package says.

The link above from Wikipedia gives a better description than I can. The top couple of paragraphs describe soluble and insoluble fiber, then scroll down a ways and there's a paragraph all about calories.

This is why I'm confused. It doesn't seem right that we would only *sometimes* leave out the calories from fiber but add them at other times.

Actually I've looked at everything else I'm doing quite thoroughly. I'm trying to look a bit deeper now.

Oh I'm aware of insoluble/soluble fiber. If I start subtracting the calories from fiber I'll either have to eat a lot less fiber or a lot more food. I'm curious to see what others think.

it's all very confusing! the calorie counts you see on packages and on websites SEEM to count the calories of insoluble fiber but not soluble fiber. that's just because of how the regulations work, and you know that surely doesn't prove that's how reality works...

soluble fiber is not digestible either. BUT apparently, the newer research shows, it's used by the bacteria in your intestines and ends up contributing about 2 calories per gram of FAT calories, not carbs. that is because the bacteria convert it in their processes.

I think you are fairly safe excluding all fiber calories when you count.

I just don't see how so many people continue to lose weight with this plan that relies solely on accurate calorie-counting, if we are all consuming too many calories...calories that we should all be subtracting.

Personally, I am sticking to the plan as written. If I find my UD/DD limits are not working, I'll readjust. I do not want to take a simple plan, that I can see following easily for a long time, and make it more complex.

I understand that this is how you want to do this diet.

However, please understand (if only so I don't have to explain it again) that not all of us are losing on the plan as it is written. This is most likely because everyone is different and handles diets differently. While you might not want to make this diet more complex, I don't find that there is much more complexity added. All you'd have to do is figure the calories from dietary fiber and subtract. I suppose taking this extra step would be a hassle to some but while I continue to be at a stand still with my weight loss, I'm willing to take that extra step.

I'm looking for people to tell me if they have tried it/haven't tried it, and their thoughts on if its something that should be done ( in the context of if it will work or not, not if its a hassle). I don't agree with ignoring fiber calories only "sometimes" and not other times as it should be one way or the other.

I'm guessing from the responses that this is a topic that might not be discussed often, so I'll try to figure it out.

I appreciate all the responses, if I figure anything out I'll be sure to let you know.

Jenn: I'm sorry if what I responded felt like a personal attack. I'm not trying to do that. Honest. I am trying to address your questions. No, I don't subtract. No, IMO i don't believe it's the key, since most people who are posting in here are able to lose. For me, the plan is working, and that's the experience I use to respond. For you, if it's not working, I understand wanting to find the answer.

Jenn personal question, but are you going to the bathroom? If you suddenly add a lot of fiber, and especially if you're not taking in enough liquid to move it through, it can cause constipation and that can prevent you from losing.

oh I didn't take offense. I'm just extra snappish today because it's a particularly hard down day. Sorry if I came off as GRR lol I'm much better now that there's something solid in my stomach.

Dottie that's something I'm wondering about and I'm actually going to be paying close attention too. My body isn't used to all this fiber but I figured after the first few uncomfortable days it would be ok.
