3 Weeks On JUDDD results--and need a little troubleshooting help
Well, it isn't horrible I suppose.
Chest: 36 1/2"
Waist: 31 3/4"
Abdomen: 34 1/2"
Upper Thigh: 21"
After 3 weeks:
Chest: 36" (loss happened in week 2)
Waist: 31 1/2" (loss happened in week 1)
Abdomen: 34" (loss happened 3rd week)
Hip: 37 1/4" (lost 1/4" in week 1, 1/2" in week 2)
Upper Thigh: 21" (no change)
So I lost 2 pounds and 2 inches. The weight loss happened in week 1, most of the inches lost in week 1 or 2. Last week was pretty much holding steady.
Which isn't bad really. But it exactly matches the rate of weight and inches lost in the previous 3 weeks when I was doing straight paleo. And I wasn't hungry every other day, nor did I count a single calorie.
So I guess I'm a little frustrated. Especially since my body is being a ninny and showing spiking bg readings every time I attempt to eat something with sugar or more than 10g of grain starch.
Hopefully I won't overwhelm with info, but I was hoping someone could look at what I've been doing and troubleshoot where maybe I've sabotaged myself. My stats are, 5'4", 46 yo, 130 pounds. Dr. J's calculator gives me 397/1567.
I haven't been going crazy with carbs--my absolute highest day was 85 grms, usually between 50-65 on UD's, and the majority of those were non grain/sugar/starch carbs. Had one UD that was way too high, and I don't usually get down to the DD cals, but have been under 500 for the most part.
I'm weighing/measuring and using ****** to keep track.

What can I change/tweak to make this work better? Or am I just so broken metabolically that I shouldn't expect more?

I understand how frustrating it can be. Is it possible your body is just happy where it is?
JUDDD should help repair a metabolism, so I dont think that is an issue, but people wiser than me will be along I am sure.,,,
I am thinking you may just be at where your body is happy. So instead of focusing on losing, focus on maintaining and then maybe you may be pleasantly surprised like some of the other maintainers. it is not a true stall until it has been 6 weeks and this may just be a sticky point for your body.

If you want to keep with the CR benefits of JUDDD, and want to make DDs easier, you could try higher DDs like some of us do. You probably don't have to do much calorie counting on DDs anyway since there isn't as much food and we tend to eat a lot of the same, simple things on DDs.
Another option is to try MUDDDg for a week and see how you do. Since the DDs are shorter, this will help you not feel as deprived. In fact, you will have UD eating at some part of EVERY day.
You've lost a pretty substantial amount of inches during a short time:) It may not be as dramatic as you'd like, but it's certainly significant!
Have you considered your UD meal plan? What plan do you follow for Up Day. Do you follow Paleo UD? LC Up Day? EFGT Up Day? South Beach Style UD?
My idea is that the UD should mimic whatever losing plan you would use if you Weren't doing JUDDD for maximum effect, with a bit of leniency of course. For example, if it were Low carb, you might be agle to eat more carbs, but so long as you are eating mostly meat and fat. or for EFGT, I could have a candy so long as my fat ratio is above 65% and my protein is satisfactory.
I tried JUDDD for a couple of weeks with the idea of maintaining and I actually lost a few pounds just eating EFGT style to my max UP Calories and just lower calories on Down Days, so I give credit to EFGT for part of it, and the Low Calories of JUDDD Down Days for the rest.
Maybe your carbs are too high for up days. Maybe save your carbs for down day since you will have lower calories and will more likely burn them up, so you can have higher fat and lower carb on up days, so there is not as much water weight rebound for having maybe too many carbs.
Thanks for the thoughts. As an adult, albeit a younger one, I was 125 and was very happy there. So I don't think my body just wants to be 130. And I want 130 to be the top of my bounce range, not the bottom.
As for woe on UD, pretty much paleo, maybe a bit of efgt. My ratio is fairly consistently, 50-65% fat, 20-35% protein, and 15-20% carbs. DD's have more fat and protein because that's what I need to stay full. And this is what it looked like before I started JUDDD as well. I have experimented with some grain/sugar carbs, but usually only once a day, so as to not overwhelm my carb tolerance.
The 1" per pound of loss is pretty consistent with what I've been losing since Aug. I've noticed that each pound equates to about a 1/4" loss in each of 4 different measurement areas.
Being close to goal hasn't seemed to slow others down. I figured I'd slide into maintenance in about 3 weeks or so, and then be able to gradually push my calories up to fire up my metabolism even more. And it hasn't worked out that way at all. I almost feel like I need to lower my UD and DD calories more.
I'm not sure I am understanding correctly, but I think I am... that you were previously on Paleo for three weeks. And now on JUDDD for another three weeks. But on JUDDD you have added in more carbs... as you complained above about your bs spiking when you attempt to eat foods that are higher in the sugars/grain carbs, etc. So, I assume you didn't attempt to eat these foods previously when you were just doing your Paleo, but are now trying to eat these foods on JUDDD, because anything is allowed on JUDDD?
If you are - and it certainly sounds like you are - sensitive at this time, these may just be foods that you have to go easier on, at least for now. Fasting is known to diminish our insulin resistance, lower and normalize our blood sugar responses, etc. but it doesn't just happen in three weeks.
I think you have lost more body fat than you believe you have. I believe the smaller measurements you see are more than a mere 2 pounds worth of body fat. But you may be another one who has some water weight gain from even your small attempt to eat some additional sugar/grain carbs.
If it were me, I would hold off on much of those carbs for right now, do JUDDD as carefully as it appears you are doing (good job, by the way..), and I'd live like that for awhile. Give JUDDD a chance to do some good work within you for awhile.
I don't know what your goal weight is, but according to your stats listed, you're there. Are you trying to lose a few more before easing into maintenance?
Actually, I've been paleo since Aug 2011, and have lost 22 pounds (2 of those in the past 3 weeks on JUDDD).
While not low carb per se, prior to JUDDD, I likely average 40-69g carbs per day--but they were all veggie or incidental in proteins.
With JUDDD, after the first week, I did a little experimenting, and have had days of 70 or 80g carbs. My DD's are always 20-30g carbs, sometimes less. I was really rather shocked to see the bg spikes I was seeing. If I didn't have the meter and been checking, I would have never known.
Today, an UD, I'm at 21--I was 'clean' paleo all day. I'm also only at 1394 cal, so really should eat something before I go to bed. But as usual when I don't dabble with the carbs, I'm just not hungry.
So, I guess it's possible that those small changes could have been water weight. And now that I'm not doing it anymore, maybe I'll get a little whoosh. I am really close to goal, but want 130 to be the top of my bounce range, so am trying to get to 127 or so to make that possible.
So, the plan for now is strict paleo, 1500-1600 UD, 500 DD, and see what happens in a week. I'm adding a little exercise (I've done pretty much none to this point) as well. So that may complicate things too.

At the time you were experimenting I wondered if the blood glucose spikes were your body's way of saying, it is too early for this. I'm with Pat and you: get back on Paleo, lose the weight, give JUDDD more time to more completely establish itself, THEN experiment.

I feel that u will lose those last few lbs eventually. Especially this summer.
U have worked hard to lose ur weight, and have done a great job.

Eieio, you made me smile. Thanks. And you are right. I'm not 16, or 25, and after 4 kids, I'm not going to look like that again even if I DO get to the weight I was then.
130 was the goal I set back in Aug. And I'm there! I should be celebrating, not feeling down because it's not less. I need to stop obsessing. Healthy is important. JUDDD is about more than losing weight. It is apparent to me that there are things about my metabolism that need healing. And the UD/DD cycle can help that. So I do plan to continue it because I want that healing.
Carbs don't work right now, fine. I can live eating the way I've been eating the past 6 mos, even if I have to do it forever. If I can control my blood sugar simply by the foods I choose, that's GOOD.
I'm going to focus on getting some exercise going, and try to be less obsessive about the number on the scale. And then just watch and see what happens. Maybe in a month, or 2 or 4, I'll be able to bump the calorie numbers up a bit. But for now, I'm ok where I am.
I just want to say 'thanks' to everyone for helping me work through this. It is so helpful to have others' thoughts to chime in when mine are telling me wrong things. This really is a great group.
