I'm sorry if this is off topic, but I have a Fast-5 question...

Has anyone on here done Fast-5? It doesn't seem to have its own room, and I'm especially interested in hearing from someone who's tried both JUDDD and F5, as it'd have to be pretty cool to get me off JUDDD.

Can anyone say how it compares to JUDDD, whether the benefits are the same, etc? Now that induction is done and I'm figuring out my comfort zone, I'm looking at MUDDD and some other options to see what I might try next to beat the "It's 3 pm on a DD, and I've about forgotten how much I love JUDDD because I'm so hungry!" blues.

Of course, it could just be that my SIRT1 is a little slow off the ground and I need to hang in there. Hm.

Hi Tori, I don't know a lot about it except you eat within a 5 hour window each day. I've done something similar as part of my experimenting on J/MUDDD where I combined different IFs. But instead of 5, I usually did something like "Fast 6 or Fast 8"!

I think some others here have done F5 and can tell you more about it.

Oh, hungry DDs... I know.

They do get better overall. It took me longer than most here to get used to them, but SIRT1 was going strong long before I really got accustomed to them (and finally had more appetite suppression). My "secret weapon" for hunger is protein.

I think Tiva does Fast5, not sure if she is still doing JUDDD as well.

While there is not specifically a Fast 5 thread, there's this:
(and some others on IF in the "other plans" section)
Intermittent Fasting 2012

I started IF on Jan 6 and it is "easier" for me than JUDDD but weight loss has stopped.
That doesn't mean it would for you--I'm sure there are many differences between us!

I have read/heard/been told that any kind of intermittent fasting will have the same health benefits (anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, etc) as JUDDD; the JUDDD induction may be the quickest way to get them "activated", though, because of the 36-hour semi-fasting/DD period.

You can also combine JUDDD and Fast 5 by having all your calories in that window. On DDs especially, if you can make it through a large portion of the day without eating, it gives you a chance to have a more normal meal (or perhaps even two, depending on what %age you're using).

There's also a plan called Leangains with an 8-hour window, and Eat Stop Eat which I believe has no eating window but you do two 24-hour fasts per week.

As PirateJenny mentioned, I do fast-5, and I've done it since July. (I do it low carb). I eat only between 11 am and 4 pm each day. I shift the eating window later if we're going out for dinner with friends or family. At first it was challenging, but now it's become second nature and I don't get hungry in the morning. It was the only thing I could find to break a long stall during the summer. Then the weight loss stopped, when I was a pound or two from goal, so I added JUDDD as well. Those last couple pounds, even with LC plus fast-5 plus JUDDD, took 5 months to lose! (And what finally worked was getting sick so I couldn't eat much for a couple weeks).

Now that I'm in maintenance, I'm doing LC (less than 50 grams/day) and fast-5. If I eat a lot one day, I eat much less the next day, but I'm not counting calories at the moment.

Anyway, fast-5 is very simple, like JUDDD. It's not magic, but it can be helpful at retraining your appetite. There's an active fast-5 facebook group.

I did the Warrior Diet for awhile. Its kinda along the same lines except he says during the day if you are hungry you should eat something light but it has to be only be either whey protein or raw foods, like almonds, veggies and fruits. I actually really did like it but i was eating too much during the day. I probably wouldnt have that problem now since JUDDD has really kicked in for me but i also wasnt eating enough in the eating window when you should eat most of your calories, which was from 5 to 8. I actually didnt lose weight. I think if i could have stuck to just having protein and soem raw veggies i would have but i was eating those dang almonds and that wasnt really good since i cant control myself...lol

You might check out The Warrior Diet though. I read his books and they are very eye opening and great reads.

Thanks, you guys! This is exactly the information I was looking for. Sounds like I'll either keep with JUDDD for now, or move to MUDDD if DDs don't get better soon. Fast-5 sounds like how I naturally eat, and may be good for maintenance, but I've successfully gained about 30 lbs in the last couple of years only eating from 1 pm to 6 pm, lol! So maybe not.

What's stalling me on JUDDD is totally psychological, I'm afraid - when I was trying to fix my eating disorder, I really convinced myself that not eating is very, very bad for me, and I must eat even if I'm not hungry. So my sense of "hunger" is all messed up. I sure was successful in reprogramming, though, because I wind up thinking about food so much in the afternoon on DDs that I can't HELP but be hungry! Oy. Today I'll try to focus on other stuff and trust the process.

I did Fast 5 for awhile, but found myself overeating in my "window" and just not having a good enough result to be motivated to stick with it. I love JUDDD so much more!

I am not doing Fast 5, but I can say that when I tried it (as in ONLY doing Fast 5 every day with no up days or down days) I didn't find it helped me lose weight. I mean yes it is wonderful to not be hungry outside of those hours, but within the hours I would binge. So it would depend on how good you are at reigning yourself in.

Now, I do JUDDD but I also do an eating window. On a down day my eating window is like 10 minutes. Hah, but seriously I only eat once on my down day and it's for a late supper.

On my up day, My eating window is more than 5 hours because I would not be able to get all my calories in in the 5 hour window. So I do have an "informal" window, in that I will never ever eat in the morning, I only eat maybe around 1pm or 2pm, and then I typically do two big meals. Maybe around 2pm and 8pm. So longer than 5 hours, but my max window would be about 8-9 hours if I snack in the evening, and maybe 6 hours if I don't snack.

You know, today's DD is going MUCH better. Only taking in liquids is making all the difference in the world. Also, when I started feeling uncomfortable 30 mins ago, I did some simple floor exercises and immediately felt MUCH better.

Months ago when I was lurking here, I think it was Pat who said one of the greatest gifts JUDDD gives is teaching us how to recognize, plan for, and handle true hunger. I have found that to be very true.

I tried Fast 5 for just a couple of months quite some time ago, thinking that I could easily limit my eating to just the 5-hour window, since I was rarely hungry for breakfast anyway, and I somehow had the idea that just eating within that window of time would result in weight loss for me.

Big disappointment. I could overeat within those 5 hours like nobody's business. LOL Just being required to limit the time frame I could eat within, did nothing to limit the quantity of food I could get crammed in. I sure didn't do that one right. LOL

I didn't come to JUDDD because I wanted to suffer, wanted to starve, wanted to endure hunger pangs, wanted to fast. What I wanted was to be healed. I was hoping that some of what I had read about for years in the CR studies, the length-of-life w/fasting studies could help me. I would have loved to find something else that *fixed* me without having to do the fasting part. Ah.. that fasting part. Yeah, I'd have liked to do something else there.

But I wanted to be fixed more, so I just kept at it. And now, I'm so much better in my relationship with food, and my metabolism runs at a much faster rate.. I can eat more and not gain weight. That fasting part worked for me as well as working to keep my calories where they had to be held. I'm just a person who has to be held accountable to my calorie numbers in some way. So JUDDD worked for me where simply doing Fast 5 wasn't doing anything for me. You may find it's great for you. Good luck!!!

I have drifted into doing fast 5 - though only on my DD's! I just find it easier to control my appetite, if i eat between 6-11pm or 7-12pm on a DD.
i can get through hunger when I know a nice amount of food is at the end of it....eating little amounts all day just makes me hungrier!
Did try it on my UD's, but it was just too long to go without eating...especially after a DD of 500ish cals.

I am trying to have a small window which I eat in usually between 2pm and 7pm on my UD and just 1 meal in the evening on DD. I find a sense of control in it and I feel like I've been challenged...as if things weren't challenging enough like!!!

Pat, I KNOW I can eat a bunch in 5 hours, too! I don't really think the Fast-5 method would slow me down, now that I think about it. Maybe for maintenance, if anything, but definitely not to lose.

Majella and Joedi, I think that's what would work best for me, too. Trying to space out the calories on DDs seems to be what's killing me - I'm thinking about food all the time, which makes me freak out because I start worrying about how few calories I'm really eating, and whether it's healthy or not. Whereas if I can keep my brain out of it and avoid the whole subject, my body feels just fine.

My problem, actually, was that I couldn't eat again within the 5 hour window.
And psychologically, I just couldn't take the idea of eating for 30-60 minutes and fasting for 23 or more!
So my window became 6...7...8...ish...hours!

I do think it would probably be a great plan for maintenance.
Good luck, whatever it is you decide to do!

I believe fast5 is noted for promoting a verry slow weight loss usualy a pound a week
and this may not even start till you are on it a few weeks. When I was just following
it I don't think I lost any weight but at least I could eat about all I wanted of what ever
I wanted and not gain weight. But then I kept a 5 hour eating window and started doing
JUDDD and the weight started coming off at a fairly good pace till I got way to loose
on my DD calories.

I agree with E.W the Fast 5 website does say it could take up to 3 weeks to start losing weight. I wouldn't be able to wait that long. But fasting on my DD until supper is ok because I get to have a nice sandwich and a cup of tea and I never get sick of sandwiches! My poor husband get's so lost on my DD's because I tell him to eat whatever he wants and he hates that! But we are saving money because of this woe...sorry went off topic there!
