JUDDDs with older kids............

Have you explained this WOE to your kids? Both of my 14yo have asked me what was up as they see me drinking my DD broth for dinner and I have explained that I am working to rev up my metab. They all know that carbs don't love me and I have to be careful with them. With four girls, I always want to be careful not to send the wrong message about food. What have you shared with your kids?

I have elected not to tell my girls. I have 22 year old, 17 year old, and 15 year old girls in the house. Luckily, they haven't really noticed. During the day we are all pretty much eating on our own. I make sure at dinner to save calories to have a "normal" dinner with the family. Those dinners are pretty much perfectly planned (lower calorie) and it's business as usual. I will usually make rice, pasta, or bread which they eat, but are used to seeing me NOT eat due to low carbing all these years.

The only one that has KIND of noticed was my 22 year old. Usually every evening, she, hubby and I have a glass of wine while eating dinner and watching TV. Now I only do that every other day. I told her I was trying to cut back on the wine because it was interfering with my sleep.

Perhaps drink the broth and lots of veggies during the day so when dinner rolls around they see you eating "normally". A lot of times I make big pots of soup, or roast chicken on my DD and the calories end up being pretty low for the main part of that meal.

I have told them that I am doing some calorie cycling to help break the stall I had hit, and to hopefully heal my metabolism from being fairly low cal for so long. Their biggest issue is on days I don't eat breakfast. So today I had an egg with them. LOL

What a great question. I was thinking something along those lines the other day. Like Monica, my 2 kids, ages 12 & 14 and hubby are used to seeing me eat LC for the past year. They all raised their eyebrows when I started JUDDD and they saw me enjoy every single bite of my favorite muffin - I hadn't had one in nearly a year. I briefly explained over dinner the concept of the UDDD body response. They seemed pretty skeptical.I also said I was still restricting my carbs, but ALLOWING MYSELF to have an occasional treat. I think it's important to not say, "I can't have this, or I can have this or that" since that sounds more like the food is controlling me, and I want them to see I am CHOOSING to control what I put in my body. My kids are both good eaters. They still have the ability to eat 'til they're satisfied, then stop. I'm not too crazy with their food choices, espec. my son's (too much sugar), so I'm often talking about the danger of too much sugar in the body, not enough protein, etc. While I don't think they really "get it," they know that I make a huge effort to educate myself to become and remain healthy, and not just willy nilly follow any diet out there just to lose pounds (unlike what I did as a teenager!). I hope that they'll grow up and view all those many so called "diet" plans out their with a critical eye and that it takes education to make wise choices about our bodies.

I wonder if it would be ok to discuss with them the importance of eating well when they are younger so they don't have to "diet." Many of us wouldn't have the broken metabolism that we do -had we made better choices when we were younger...

Hard for some of the young ones to understand it (or care for that matter) but I think around age 15-17 they might.

We have more and better research now to know more about nutrition!

I'm not able to complete my full thought today... sorry if this doesn't make sense.

No kindern in this household. But you might try the approach I used on DH and DS.

I explained that in lc I found a ketogenic woe that improved my health and expedited weight loss. But over time and research I realized that approach, while valid and productive, was inherently incomplete. So I did further research and found an alternative ketogenic woe that provides the same weight loss advantages, is more supportive of successful weight maintenance, allows me to occasionally eat foods that had to be restricted on the original woe, and is providing much more complete and long-lasting health benefits. In order to achieve this, I calorie-cycle ........

I don't know if this works with children. But with adults boring them to tears quickly shut them up and ensured they run if I even start to talk about food.

Too funny Nancy. That would be many family too but I do have to say that my SO is really loving that I can eat carbs now. He was a little skeptical at first but seeing me eat normal has really impressed him. All I have really told my kids is that im calorie cycling. They are used to my weird ways of eating..lol

I have seriously been saying it is "calorie cycling" to ANYONE who asks, including my children (25, 21, and 19). That seems to appease most people who are curious, and then stops more questions, criticisms, etc. I'm too lazy to go into a big, long explanation.

Thanks to everybody for their thoughtful answers. The 6yo is pretty oblivious and the 11yo hasn't asked, but the twins did. They have loved seeing me get healthier over the past two years so they seem to be taking the "needing a boost" in stride. The funniest thing is that I have been doing this 11 days and today is the first day my DH has been around long enough to notice I'm doing something different. And, yes, Nancy he was bored about 20 sec. into the explanation!
