May I ask for your good energy? Not JUDDD related . . .

I don't pray, but I believe in the power of prayer and good thoughts. You all are so supportive, I'm hoping you can send some good energy my way.

<<<<<------My dog, Reeses (because he's chocolate and peanut butter colored) has epilepsy. He had two seizures over a year ago and we put him on phenobarbitol. He hasn't had any seizures since, so we got the okay to wean him off his medication. The vet agreed it could have been something external which caused his seizures and we've since moved from our old house, so we thought we'd be in the clear.

Over the last month, we decreased his meds to half, and then weaned him completely off less than a week ago. He was doing great. When DH got home today, Reeses was foaming and bleeding from the mouth. He was disoriented. All signs of seizures. Jer texted me as I was coming home from work. By the time I got home (15 minutes), he was seizing again. We rushed him to the vet, and he seized in the car, and again at the vets, before they got medication on board.

This qualifies as "cluster" seizures, which is no good at all. His temp was over 106 and he had to be packed with ice packs, got loading doses of valium and phenobarb, subcutaneous fluids, and he's nowhere near out of the woods yet. I will be monitoring him all night and he still may need to be rushed to the emergency 24 hour vet if there's not more improvement.

I know many of you are "pet people" so I know you understand how I'm feeling. I'm the one who takes in the strays and always tries to give my pets the best. I currently have 3 very large dogs and a cat. I'd sure like to keep it that way.

Thanks for the shoulder to cry on!

Awww, poor puppy. Sending healing thoughts and energy to all of you. I'm so sorry you all are going through this.

Bonnie 01-26-2012 09:31 PM

Sending good thoughts and healing vibes for your dear Reeses. It is so hard when our furbabies are sick or hurting :hugs:

Saying a prayer and sending out my strongest positive thoughts for this animal. I've had many much-loved dog and cat companions share the years of my life with me, as well as so many other kinds of fine animals they are a blur of fur and feathers, hooves and even fins as I remember back. Traveling through life without the company of the other animals would be a barren journey.

Keep us posted. I'm praying that he pulls through this bad episode and gets nicely stabilized on meds once again. And then that medication will take care of this for this sweetheart of a guy. Love your avi picture of him.

KeirasMom 01-26-2012 10:23 PM

Thank you for the kind words and thoughts.

He just had another seizure. It was shorter and less intense than the last few, but disconcerting nonetheless, given the amount of medication he has in his body. I wish I knew how to ease his suffering. He's so sweet and has not one aggressive bone in his body. We got him when Keira was just a year old and he's her protector, guardian, and giver of big, sloppy, wet kisses. Keira's trying to be brave, but she's worried about her Reeses.

I'm so sorry, Dawn. :aprayer:

Update

I had to call Jeromy to come home from work. Reeses had two more seizures. I gave him the rectal valium (TMI, sorry), and his temperature was 107.7, so I put ice packs everywhere I could fit them.

Jer's taking him to the 24 hour emergency vet for I.V. fluids and meds. I'm really worried he won't come home.

Okay, I'm going to put my big girl pants on now and quit stressing. G'night all!

Final update

The E.R. couldn't control the seizures. They got him heavily sedated and his pupils were still dilating and constricting. There was definitely something neurological going on and a high likelihood of brain damage. We opted to end his suffering and Reeses was put to sleep a little bit before midnight. Keira, Jeromy, and I were all there, petting and kissing him, hoping to ease his passing.

Our hearts are broken, but we are infinitely grateful for the five glorious years he gave us.

:console: My heart breaks for you and your family. One of the greatest gifts God has given us is a taste of His unconditional love through companions such as Reeses. Losing them is never easy and I hope and pray that you all will find comfort and peace in this difficult time. :console:

Thinking of you all and sending huge hugs and lots of love your way.
His life may have short, but sounds like it was long on love and affection, and that he gave so much back too.
You were blessed to know him, and he, you.

Oh what a tragedy for you all. I have a dear friend who wen to through a similar ordeal with her cat over the past months. Little MIssy also lost the battle. Epilepsy is so hard to get under control if it starts clustering.

My heart goes out to you, especially little Kiera. You did everything you could and gave Reeses so much love. Blessings to you all.

I'm so, so sorry to read this update this morning. Of course you made the right decision, but it is always heartbreaking to have to do so. Thank you for your strength, though, and I pray you will find comfort in knowing that you did everything you could, including the last loving decision you made for Reeses. My sincere condolences to you and your family.
