I'm sorry, but this JUDD seems too good

to be true. I've been lurking around here a couple of days. Surely there's a catch? Is there anyone this doesn't work for?

A lot of you seem to have already lost alot of your weight on low carb or similar plans and then have switched to JUDD. Has anyone lost the bulk of their weight using this?

I had lost 15 pounds in 18 months doing LC and 16 pounds in 2.5 months doing JUDDD. JUDDD was a lot easier, quicker and fit into my "normal" lifestyle much better than LC and I feel just as wonderful doing JUDDD as I did doing LC. There isn't a "catch" but for some of us this WOE just kick starts our metabolism again and gets it to be a "fat burning machine" like when we were younger.

I'm one week in, and I can honestly say that I'm getting exactly the results described. I promise Dr. Johnson isn't paying us! j/k

I see your goal loss, and it fits right in with the rest of us - we have folks who want to lose anywhere from 5 to 100 lbs, as well as the maintenance gals who are where they want to be. I've only been able to lose 13 lbs in the past two months, but on this woe I've already lost a significant amount in a week (I don't have a total, I'm vacationing without a scale, but I know I lost 3 lbs in the first couple of days, and my clothes keep getting looser, so the actual total must be pretty good!). I was starting to think I was physically incapable of losing. Now I know I'll get where I want to be if I stick with this.

No catch -- it really works! I'm just kicking myself for not trying this years ago. I'd have been at goal rather than struggling through months on LC where I only lost one or two pounds, then "sinned" by eating a piece of bread and "regaining" five. No, thanks.

I am sure that there is someone, somewhere that this doesn't "work" for. Remember, eating 500 calories (or fewer) every other day isn't always the picnic it sounds like when you're standing outside and looking in..... though it does get easier once your body adapts to the up-and-down cycling. It's WAY easier once you see your body giving you the results you want!

I can only suggest for those who are interested but wary: what do you have to lose, but fat? It's worth a try, and then you can decide for yourself.

Do you guys eat carbs on your UP? After doing low carb for so long, I am afraid that if I eat carbs on my UP then it will turn into a binge.

Hi IW!

I lost my first 8# or so just doing "lowER carb" (anything was better than shoveling in the cookies day after day!), and then switched to vLC and lost 12# But it took a long time (I was used to weight flying off with less effort). The weight loss on LC started crawling toward the end. It took me 3 or 4 weeks to lose one pound by the end of LC, to give you an idea. I wish I'd come to JUDDD sooner.

Altogether on JUDDD, I've lost 14 pounds, but I only intended to lose 5 of those! What I mean is, I had 5# left to goal weight when I came to JUDDD, and it fell off with ease. But now, every time I try to maintain I start losing more weight again after a month. So I am trying to get this figured out so I stop losing.

Anyway, welcome!! Stick around and read, ask questions, see what you think.

I shake things up all the time with my version of Pirate Jenny's MUDDD, my "Fast 5" & other IF. ...low-moderate fat....and eating "healthy" foods 75+% of the time which lets me have real life and indulgences too I've reached my goals, improved my health & appearance, and enjoy my lifetime woe!

Some do; some don't. When I eat carbs, I get very full very fast (but I have a built-in stop signal that I can't get past, thank goodness). Others seem to do fine without binging,...and others have problems.

I suggest that IF you decide you want to eat some carbs, plan in advance exactly what you are going to eat, and DO NOT vary from that. Even this plan doesn't allow for unlimited food. Respect your UD calories, (google Johnson Up Day Down Day and follow the calculator on his site for the recommended calories), and you should be fine. But if it causes you problems, continue on to the next day and just start over. None of this "if you mess up you have to go three days without a slip" business like you have with Atkins. You just regroup and move on to the next day. JUDDD is very forgiving.

If you weigh, and not all of us do, remember that when/if you eat any carbs, you will have some water weight gain attached to that intake. Water is water. Water is not fat. It doesn't matter what the scale says if the gain you experience is water, and that will soon become apparent. Again: that's IF you weigh.

Myself, I don't care if I weigh 450 pounds as long as I fit in my skinny jeans, which is why I don't weigh.

Yes, it's as good as it seems to appear. People here on JUDDD have lost weight regardless of whether they had a great deal to lose, or just their last few pounds.

And you know how they always say those last pounds are the hardest ones to get off? Well, that never seems to hold true for JUDDD followers, so maybe it's true on straight low carb dieting, but we don't fret it here, as it's every bit as likely that a dieter will lose down to goal and then have to scramble to add in more food to keep the weight loss from making them lose more than they want to!

And this weight loss happens no matter what foods we enjoy including in our menu plans. So we have folks here who stick to low carb, those who add back in a lot more *healthy* carb choices, and many of us who include some high carb choices too, and love them, and still lose weight and/or maintain our chosen goal weights.

And all of this wonderful weight loss happens from just holding to our calorie numbers for Up Days and for Down Days. That translates into.. we diet like crazy one day, and eat whatever we want the next without being restricted in anything except not eating too hog wild with the calorie consumption. (Which you wouldn't expect to do on any diet, so that's not novel to JUDDD. LOL)

People can bad mouth measuring food portions, or eating in moderation, or having to count calories, or eating at higher carb levels, or how horrible it is to eat a grain, but when we do all of that on JUDDD, we increase our level of physical and emotional health at the same time we slim down our bodies and reach a normal and lovely weight, while those who are averse to all of this complain of weight loss stalls and are constantly trying to find substitutes for the foods they really want in the first place. We all get to choose how we want to manage our body weight, how we want to eat, and whether we are going to settle for living in overweight bodies. Here, we eat anything we want to eat and slim down as well. JUDDD gives us such a lovely world.

And have you noticed how everyone here is so happy and positive? Weight loss success on JUDDD does that for a person!

YES, looking in is easier than doing it, especially in these early stages. Those 500 calorie days are no picnic.

But I feel better...a lot more energy, so far and I'm only on day 4!

Well I've "only" lost 14 pounds since I started before Thanksgiving. That's light speed for me lol. I might have lost more if I hadn't dived, fork first, into a vat of carbs

I've read that holding to fairly low carb over an extended time does result in lower serotonin levels, resulting in increased depression and irritability. It affects some folks a whole lot more and some not much at all.

But there's no denying that a loaf of some great artisan bread with lots of fresh chilled butter keeps me happy!

Dr J says JUDDD is not good for Type 1 diabetics. I suspect there may be other metabolic problems that make calorie restriction not viable.

But if you can keep DDs low, JUDDD works, oh it works so well.

I had a two month stall on lc. When I started JUDDD, I stayed lc for a few weeks. Then I introduced carbs one at a time. And found I had no blood glucose spikes and no urge to binge. And that is eating (and not counting) carbs on UD and on DD. I am losing two pounds a week and lots of inches.

Hmm, you folks are piquing my interest (my LC weight-loss has stalled and I'm trying hard to bring it back... gained back 1/2 of my weight from the initial 30lb loss, mostly when I carbed-up on occasion)

Would the idea behind this be similar to Intermittent Fasting? Seems like this would be a somewhat-more-tolerable version of IF I guess?

Kinda wish there was more to read about the SIRT1 gene that Dr. Johnson keeps talking about. Anyone try conventional LC while taking his eResveratrol supplement?

Aren't there a few here who have diabetes and just don't take their Down Day calories quite so low... eat a bit more often, etc. and manage their BS and their weight loss that way?

This idea occured to me as well and one of the reasons I decided to try JUDDD. I started at 700 (maintanence, then dropped to 600). Now I have at least 1 and occasionally 2, 24 hour fasts. I have a 36 hour fast coming up next Saturday, with plenty of activity thrown in. Not batting an eye doing it. I find that confidence very pleasing.

Yeah, I made some short-term adjustments to my diet this week (adjusting the protein/fat ratio for more fat) and added routine yoga every other day, and I am going to go the next week with that just to prove it out, but if the scale hasn't budged much (which so far, not looking promising yet...) I'm going to get started on JUDDD. I'd love to watch this stall break before my eyes!

Would love to have you join us here on JUDDD! It really is a great way to moderate your eating and to lose weight and eat very, very well all at the same time.

If you can do any of the forms of IF, your Down Days on JUDDD should be pretty easy to manage, and certainly most folks can manage to eat up to their UD calorie number, so that's about all there is to it. LOL

I sure do hope you will join us here. The plan works. And it works regardless of what foods you choose to include in your daily menus. JUDDD isn't about the food choices. It's about the particular cycle of calories between Up Days and Down Days, and if you can respect your own individual and personal numbers (pretty well) (most of the time) you should just join the ranks of all the others here who lose weight while eating some of the foods they were missing previously. This is one happy, happy place.

I did IF like 2 or 3 days and gave up But mainly it was because I was feeling rather... quiet, tired, like my metabolism was slowing down. I ended up breaking out of that funk with a huge carb-up day, which gained me a few lbs that came off after a few days of conventional LC'ing (so it was probably water weight). I might've continued forward with it but I just felt like I was in uncharted territory. Doing a 500 calorie "fat fast" on the down day seems like it'd be tolerable to me though. That's kind've what I have in mind.

Although my UD number is something like 2700 calories, I can't imagine hitting that number unless I added a ton of carbs to it--I did some ******.com analysis of my diet last week before making adjustments and I think it took some serious LC indulgence to get up to 2200... Amazing b/c years ago when I had a dietitian supervising a low-fat diet I could never keep it under 2600 (and her target for me was 2000!)

i haven't read all of the responses yet but i'll add my own....1 i was skeptical too but the evidence is overwhelming....2 i was sick for awhile and hadn't lost a thing and even gained so i pouted....3 8 weeks in and i'm down 12lbs.....i've stumbled...DRANK ALCOHOL...eaten cookies/cake/buffalo wild wings.....not with abandon but i've not held back sometimes and i'm still losing....i'm just sad i didn't try this sooner!!!!!

Im one of the ones that this has been very slow for but so worth it. I have been lowcarbing for 7 years and then came to juddd because I started gaining and messing with my diet and just wasn't happy. I have just now started to lose a little weight but I only need to lose about 5 pounds. What is wonderful for me is that im eating carbs. After years of not eating carbs and then going through spells of my ED triggering and bingeing and purging on carbs this is a dream for me. I can eat bread, pasta, sugar, whatever I want and I might see the scale go up but it goes right back down on my DD. DDs now are super easy. I barely get hungry and when I do its so easy to ignore the hunger. It's really great and this is the best group of people out there.

JUDDD is amazing!!!! I really do feel good doing it. I'm in a happy mood nearly always! People around here are dropping pounds like crazy only dieting half the time. How great is that?
