Interesting article in Women's Day

Talked about the "new" diet where you carb cycle to keep your thyroid guessing on what your body's trying to do so it doesn't slow down weight loss. Talks about high carb meals one day, low carb meals the next day, and one day of "all-out eat whatever you want". It said that if you low carb all the time, the thyroid slows down the metabolism. One thing I don't like about it though is it still wants you to eat the fat-free and low fat items, and I like to be able to eat the full-fat (butter, sour cream, dressings) and am willing to take the calories from them and cut them somewhere else so I can eat them.

Oops - sorry - that was Woman's World, not Women's Day.

There's quite a few of us here who agree with you. I never plan to the buy fat-free sour cream, butter, mayo, etc. again. I either just have tiny amounts of my DDs or save that stuff for my UDs.

That's nonsense. Our metabolism is not affected by the type of food we eat but by the amount. That's why we cycle calories--to avoid the metabolic slowdown that 500 cal days in succession would cause.

To cycle carbs, you certainly wouldn't do it on a daily basis because you'd never get into ketosis. There are doctors who recommend a high carb day every 6-8 weeks to keep the body from getting to 'used' to the absence of carbs, similar to the way exercise physiologists suggest 'shaking up' one's workout routine periodically.

I've eaten low carb for several years, and I have a high carb day every two months. I'm not sure it's necessary, but it hasn't been a problem for me.

I think there have been a lot of studies lately that show appropriate use of the full fat versions are fine for most people. I also find that I use more of the fat free or fake items because the taste just isn't there and it feels like overall I'm saving calories.

The book this comes from is called "Choose to Lose" and is supposed to be the "secret" behind Extreme Makeover weight loss, says you can lose up to 30 lb in a month. Even on the high carb days, he has low fat or non fat items like mayo, etc. It doesn't say in the article how many carbs you are supposed to eat on a LC day or a HC day, but there is no way I could live without fat anymore.

Precisely! Why bother with that 'low fat' stuff, who know what is in half of it?

For anyone suffering from a slow digestion, fat free and low fat items are a much better pick because the higher the fat content the harder to digest. Also better for acid reflux. Just thought I'd throw out some information I actually know a bit about! =)
