How did you pick your goal weight?

I'm having a little trouble with this. BMI seems like a good idea, but the range is so vast! Right now, it's set for the weight I was when I met my husband 20 months and 20 lbs ago - but at that time, I was trying to lose 10 lbs! (He's a good cook )

For years, I considered 136 my magic number because I FELT thin at that weight, but now that seems too small. I like having boobs!

145 was the weight I maintained without trying when I hadn't discovered that calories existed yet - should I try for that again? It just seems so far away! But on JUDDD, maybe I should have an honest goal, rather than "Well, hopefully I can achieve this bare minimum and not feel disgusting anymore."

Or should I have no goal at all, and just see what happens?

So, how did you guys pick your goals?

I chose a clothing size that seems appropriate to my height and bone structure.

I have no clue how much I will weigh when I get into that size.

I have a main goal, which is 175, the weight I was when DH and I started dating. That is not my ultimate goal. My ultimate goal would be closer to 150, but I am honest enough to know that I won't really figure it out until I get closer. I haven't been there in 15 years and that may be too much or too little for my older, baby-having frame. In high school my lowest weight was 106 and I have NO desire to see that weight again. When I look back at pictures, I didn't really look healthy until somewhere between 135 and 150.

I also have mini goals along the way. These are 25 lb. increments and I plan on rewarding myself each time I hit them (a new pair of jeans, or a book that I've been wanting, something like that).

My current goal weight is just my mini goal. I want to get back down to 130 like I did the first time I did low carb. Once I do, I want to maintain in the 130 - 135 range. I'm 5' 8".

I just wanted to get down to the normal, healthy-looking weight I've been most of my adult life (other than times where medications caused weight gain or loss, or insulin resistanct caused gain) and that would be in the 140s. I can go down to 138# and still look healthy, but lower than that, I think I look too thin for my body type, and besides, it's not sustainable, at least not in a way that lets me enjoy as much food as I do now.

Thanks guys. You've helped me get clarity on this one. I'm resetting to my new goal weight - yes, it's a big scary amount of weight to lose. And yes, a lot of my fat-positive friends (you know the ones, they're a bit plump themselves, and tell you you're losing too much weight every time you go down a size - they mean well) said it was too thin. But I need to set a goal I'm comfortable with, rather than basing it on what other people say.

And I will do it!

I picked 150 because that would give me an even 100-pound loss from the heaviest weight I ever saw on the scale (although I was even heavier than that at the start but I didn't own a scale yet.) Once I get to 150 I will re-evaluate.

I picked 120 -because that's the weight I've always thought I should be. I'm 5'2".

However, last time I successfully lost weight - I looked fantastic at 140 (only 101lbs to go!!) - so, as I lose weight - I'll have a better idea of where I truly want to be!

I fully comprehend the problem of a DH who is a good cook!!!

My goal weight is 185, which is still overweight but I never found being skinny very attractive. When I see plus size models I get SO jealous of their gorgeous bodies and curves. When I see "normal" models, I don't find that attractive, so I am shooting for 185 (even though I am already wearing M sizes). And I am sure I will feel very good at 185, already did when I was 190 about 6 years ago.

I weighed 135 when I was younger, and was very active and muscular. I weighed 143 right before I got pregnant with DS in 1993. He was born in 1994 and I weighed 170-180-190 for several years and felt horrifically fat. A few years ago I put on about 100lbs after going on anti-depressants.

I'm not sure what weight I'll look good at or feel comfortable with, since I haven't been comfortable with myself since 1993!!! I don't know if I'll ever be able to get to 135-140 again, but I'm hoping 160 is realistic.

I have a lot of nice clothes in sizes 16-18 and when I look at photos, I did NOT look bad at that size. Getting back to that would be nice, regardless of what I weigh!

PS: I think I weighed
<--about 170 in my avatar pic.

Same here, Jenny. Paxil cured my life-long struggle with panic attacks but I can't say I was thrilled with the side effects. In the end I just traded one huge problem for another (no pun intended.)

I always thought I was overweight, though. Even when I weighted 135 I thought I'd look better at 120.

I picked 140 as a target weight. When I was younger (college age) I was 120 lbs.
but really I just want to be fit and healthy and not struggle for a "magic" number.

I do agree about the anti-depressants.

I wanted to add, Way to go Michelle!! on your progress!

Yep, Paxil was the "medication" I was referring to above when I mentioned weight gain. My appetite was off the charts on the drug. I could put food away like a couple of teenage boys and be starving again a couple hours later. Nothing would take any weight off either, not diet, not exercise, nothing. Except getting off Paxil.

Sorry to hear that!
I am not thrilled with my "huge problem" either but the way I was before was much worse!
I have/had rapid-cycling bi-polar disorder; basically I couldn't think about anything but killing myself for 3-4 days every 2 weeks, or 3-4 days of insomnia & mania, with about a week of feeling somewhat normal but exhausted/embarrassed in between...repeat...repeat...repeat...

I feel that way about birth control. *TMI alert* I was fine on mine, and then three years ago, things just....changed. I had crazy mood swings, increased anxiety, uncontrolled weight gain, depression, no sex drive, and nothing made any of it any better long term until I went off the stupid BC. Now I use FAM and condoms, feel totally protected against little ones, AND get to feel like myself again.

I find it ironic that a couple of docs actually wanted to put me on anti-depressants to improve my anxiety/depression, when a medication caused it in the first place! It just took me three years to figure out that my symptoms were all linked, and not caused by being crazy or something.

I love how we all have stories behind our goal weights, and how self-supporting you guys' stories are! And also that it's obviously not a set-in-stone, do-or-die golden number for anyone. You're such good role models!!! <3

Thank you Kimmie! It's been a long progress, especially with two pregnancies along the way.

Jenny, I think it's worth just about anything to stop your old cycle. SO glad Paxil did what it was meant to for you!! And now JUDDD is clearly helping you get all systems back to a healthy place. Sometimes recovery's just multi-level, no way around it and nothing wrong with it.

Thanks, ladies!!!
I take Wellbutrin, actually; not an SSRI.
And, I agree...it's been worth it...that old cycle was hell!
Although I felt very helpless about the weight gain,
I had even less control over my mental disorder,
and it was way, way more damaging than being obese.

So I've been fit + messed up
and obese + not messed up;
maybe one day I'll be fit + not messed up--
how nice would that be!!!

PJ-I'm glad Wellbutrin works for you. How horrible to have to deal with all that!

I took Wellbutrin for a couple of weeks and ended up having such a bad allergic reaction I had to have my wedding ring cut off due to swelling and hives. Ugh! DH was out of town, so I made sure to take before and after pictures of the hand so he'd understand why I cut off my ring. Sadly, the doctor's office didn't have a ring cutter, so I had to go to the local fire department and they ended up using me as a training exercise! I had like 15 firefighters taking turns with the ring cutter.

You know when first started losing weight I didn't even have a goal. I had no idea because I was always big. I was a big kid and just got bigger as I got older and I had kids. I was a size 22 at 20 years old. I was a 24 26 for most of my adult life. I started losing weight when was 33 and had no idea what goal yo set. I just lost weight. I was happy at 150. I stayed there for about 2 years and easily maintained eating low carb. I started tweaking things and lost 10 and then lost more and got to thin. I started weight lifting and gained a little too much. Now im trying to get down to between 140 and 145. Judd is great.
But with the goal weight I never had one until now... lol
Through all of my weight loss I just wanted to lose weight.

I went to several sites, put in my height, sex and age and picked middle of range (if there was one). Averaged 3 or 4 results and came up with a number that was a bit higher than I was in my 30's, but what I believed I could live with. Got down below it twice in the past 5 years but with diabetes and taking insulin it is very hard to keep the weight stable. So now I'm aiming for higher up the range due to the fact I'm 63 and don't need to be skinny -- just healthy. So at 5'4" medium boned, I'm aiming for 150-155. That will put me just a tad below 25 BMI.

I'm 5'2" and figured that I will have hit goal at 130. When I was in my 20s, I weighed about 105-110 and thought I was too fat. Go figure.
I think at 130 I will look proportionate and feel healthy. I am small boned, and apple shaped and hopefully I will look like less of an apple!

I've found over the years that the scale is NOT indicative of what you look like. For instance, back in 2005 when I had lost the 100 lbs. I looked super lean at 145. Last year I had kidney surgery and went to 128 and looked 2 dimensional. Over the summer I went to 135 and dropped again to 129 but looked completely different than I did at 128. No way 1 lb. made that big a difference you'd think but pictures don't lie - neither do my clothes. I've read a lot of people here talk about losing inches while have the scale stand still - that phenomenon is very common. You can be one weight at one time in your life and be thin but be the same weight a decade later and look fat. Body composition should be the guide here - if you are very fit and muscular you may look fab at 145 and others be 'pudgy' at 130 it all depends on what's going on under the skin. Speaking of skin, that's another issue I have a double whammy - I lost a huge amount of weight AND I'm over 40 now so if I had all my skin lifted, trimmed and straightened out I'd probably look great underneath. That also helps distort your body image and can cause you to keep losing and losing in an effort to get "rid" of it but in my case no amount of loss could fix it.

Was thinking the other day, when I got to goal with ww, 18 years ago, my goal was 9-9. I made goal and maintained for a little while. Anyone know if you can still attend classes for free when under your goal weight?

Hugs
Jo
