Using a JUDDD / Low Carb combo

Can you still do low carb diet and JUDDD at the same time?

Say for instance, on a DD, I limit my calories by using low carb items and on the UP days I just add in more lower carb items. Will this work?

I do intend to read the book and although I don't post here very often, I read often. I have a considerable amount of weight to drop. I'm 5'7", 214 lbs. and wear a size 14. I get so whenever I see pictures of myself because once upon a time I was fit. The problem with low carbing is that after a few months, it does get boring. Kinda like something a former smoker told me long ago... she's a puff away from a pack a day.... I feel the same way with low carbing... once you start eating carbs again it is hard to return to restricting yourself.

I thought by merging the two that it might increase my chances of success and get me closer to my goal weight..... So when I do get tired of the strict carb restriction - which I will - I can work the backup plan, so to speak. I'm on blood pressure pills only because of my weight. My doctor has made it clear that if I can get to 170... I'm off.

Please tell me this is doable. I'll read the book on my kindle this weekend I promise.

Hi, Sedona! to JUDDD!

Yes, we have people doing LC on JUDDD, moderate carb, high carb, etc. JUDDD isn't about carbs in iteself - it's a way to cycle calories within whatever diet framework one wants to use, whether it's a steady diet of whale blubber or Twinkies, lol.

Yes, your LC DD and more low carb items on UD is one way you can work it.

This is certainly do-able for you, Sedona! As you go along, you may even find you can add more carbs in and enjoy it and still drop weight as so many of us have found!

Post away any and all questions - you don't have to wait!

I agree. JUDDD doesn't care what foods you choose to eat. Those choices are completely up to you. We have quite a few here who remain very low carb on JUDDD.

You undoubtedly already know pretty much what foods are your low carb choices, so that learning process may well already be over. That starts it off a bit easier then.

Just do be aware that you do have to count your calorie consumption, which involves really having a truly accurate handle on the measure of your foods and the size of your portions. For myself, I chose to actually weigh and measure my foods, and count the calories very closely. And that was especially true when I first started.

But this is an excellent way to be able to diet, and if you are one who gets any appetite suppression on low carb, the DDs should be very, very easy for you to hold to. And then you can use your UDs to slowly climb the carb ladder, adding in a few of the various foods allowable on the various rungs of the Atkins low carb plan.

Good luck! I hope you join us in JUDDD. It's a great plan.

Thank you so much for your responses and after reading about JUDDD for the past few weeks here.... some of the questions I had have been answered. This just seems so doable in the long term and for now with the low carb, I think I will be very successful. Eventually, I want to enjoy a new normal. I decided in December that I have so few things in my life that I have total control over... in fact, it really is just 1 - ME 2012 is going to produce a healthier/happier me and from that.... I think I can better handle anything that comes my way.

BTW, today is my 1st DD day. I drank a 140 calorie Adkins shake at 7ish this morning and I’m still not all that hungry. But I'm already looking forward to the Adkins shake WITH ham and eggs tomorrow morning and the steamed scallops/shrimp with slaw I'm going to have tomorrow for lunch.

Sedona I find I do better if I have carbier foods early in the day, rather than at supper. It may just be me, but if you decide to add more carbs in, it may work for you, too

Dottie,

I tend to do that anyway even on low carb. My low carb is about 30-40 carbs per day so that might be mod-carbs. But I agree, more carbs in the a.m. is mucho better!!! I noticed last night that I was cold and also very gassy. All night, I could have farted my way to the moon, but when I woke up this morning, 4 lbs. gone. I find that amazing. I ordered the book from Amazon instead of downloading it to my kindle. (it was cheaper) so... I'm looking forward to sticking with this. After careful viewing of what I am eating & checking what calories I should be taking in, I just might have been hindering my weight loss by not eating enough... so today I'm going to try and hit the calorie mark but stay as low carb as I can.

I am staying low-er carb, while using the JUDDD method. My top three reasons for this:

1- I'm hypoglycemic, so I don't get the blood sugar spikes & crashes that I get eating more carbs.

2- Staying in ketosis makes DDs a breeze.

3- It's really easy to get the calories up for an UD.

I'm only on Day 12, but I'm down 9.5 lbs, so I think it's working!

I'm doing low carb along with JUDDD after finding out over the holidays how hard it is for me to stay away from cookies and other sweets. I really like low carb foods, so it isn't that much of a sacrifice on my part.

What is your worse nightmare?

How about finding out your scale is 3 lbs. off NOT IN YOUR FAVOR?

Anyway, it is the end of week #1. My REAL weight should have been 215 to start not 212 and today I am 211. It sucks my scale is so messed up but I'm now going by my new scale that matches the doctor's office. It 'appears' I've lost 4 lbs. my 1st week. Perhaps next week will give me a better idea. Anyway, this past week has been wonderful. I had a waffle, soup at Ledos amongst other wonderful carb items (keeping carbs under 80) I wouldn't otherwise be unable to enjoy on Atkins and still lost weight.

Today I'm on an UP day so I had some Spanish rice this morning. It smelled so good last night but I waited.

I've been thinkinig of low carb on my DDs too, but what to have? Not into shakes, and an egg is not very filling....

Those of you doing it, what are some of the things you have on your DDs? I am on an UD today, and am doing my usual LC, but with some vodka and a bit of flour on the skate I plan to have for dinner...

I eat the same as I did on low carb on DDs, meat and veggies, I just weigh/measure it so I know for sure the calories. I did buy some FF dressing for my salads and some FF cheese just to help keep the calories down. I save the real stuff for my UDs. I never eat fruit on either days.

Low(ish) Carb DD Staples has some things to try.

A lower calorie protein like egg white, fish, shrimp, chicken, etc. Rounded out with bulk in the form of veggies like a salad or stir-fry. Omelets or scrambled eggs with veggies and bits of protein like ham and some cheese.

I do eat grapefruit on DDs, and sometimes whole milk plain yogurt (about 1/2 c.) with berries.

When I figured my calories and plugged in my current weight, it spit out that I could have 2029 calories on my UP days. That is just so much (I think) so I have been trying to stick to 1800 on my UP days (plugging in a weight between my goal and current). Hopefully that was okay???

Yesterday, I was trying to watch my calorie intake closely and needed 750 calories to meet the 1800 calorie goal. So, I decided to sit down and eat spaghetti with my family. I checked the scale this morning and lost .7 lbs. I wasn't expecting a weight loss after an UP day. It might be small but I will certainly take all I can get!!!

I'm also finding these DD's easier as I go along. I've had a 45 calorie cup of soup and I've been up since 5... not bad, IMO.

I put my weight and heigh in the juddd thing to see how many calories I should eat a day and it said 1781 OMG I dont know how to get my calories up that high doing low carb or maybe I need to up my carb count from 20 to god knows what.....Any HELP anyone can offer would be wonderful.

Thanks

Rhonda - I do this strictly low carb. I try to hit my UD number (1500, but I'm almost 60 years old) as close as I can, but I don't worry about it if I don't. I don't believe in eating or drinking just to hit a number, but that is just me. I keep my DD's in the 300 - 400 calorie range, never over 500. I do 30 net carbs and will probably up it to 35 - 40 for February. Here is my progress so far:

11/14 201.8 (restarted Atkins)
12/01 190.8
01/01 181.2

01/06 - 179.4 (22.4 lb total on Atkins, started LC UD/DD)
02/01 - 169.6 (9. 8 lb, 32.2 lb total)

Add healthy fats. Coconut oil bark helps me get up to my 1500-1600. I don't do strict lc, but rather paleo, so I add lots of veggies. My lunch salad on an UD will include a hardboiled egg and avocado as well as veggies. I also add some cashews sometimes--nuts are ok on paleo.

I typically come in around 40-50g carbs, but if I'm eating 'clean', those are not grain/sugar/starch carbs. I've been playing around with carbs some to see the effect on my blood sugar (it hasn't been good), and have had 70-80g on a couple of UDs when I've done that.

But then, I've only lost a pound too. LOL. I think my metabolism slowed waaaay down from being on 1100-1200 cal so long (about 6 mos--I just didn't need more food eating paleo than that).

avocados are an easy way to add extra calories and give your body that good fat it needs. one whole avocado is just over 300 calories. I like to open them up, put a little salt and lime and eat them straight out of the skin. yumm
