The Hibernation Diet: honey before bed!!! :yummy:

If you have night sweats, wake up repeatedly during the night, wake up exhausted, or even want to lose a few pounds, you might be interested in this (it's not LC friendly so I thought I'd share it here and see what y'all think):


I'm actually leery of trying this myself, because I have diabetes, BUT I came across this because of a concern we diabetics have, called the "dawn phenomenon". And what he says about stress hormones and the adrenal glands are a concern for everyone.


If you are interested in trying it, I read a very, very long thread about it on a mothering/nursing forum, and I noticed a few patterns; many people said:

1) It didn't work the first night, but it worked after that.
2) It worked the first night, NOT the second and third night, then great after that.
3) You may experience some nightmares and/or vivid dreams. This could be because, according to the author in the video, your short-term memory is improving. You have always had such dreams but didn't remember them before. And/or you are sleeping better and therefore experiencing more REM sleep.
4) For many people it worked better if they took the honey plain or with a warm drink, and no other food; also, if they hadn't eaten for a couple of hours prior to taking the honey. For others, it didn't seem to make a difference.

You've struck up an interest in me with this, PJ

I have some good honey in the cabinet that I didn't think I could use on LC and then sort of forgot about when I started JUDDD. I might mix in into some decaf green tea at night or something.

I was afraid of the pure blast of sugar from honey since I am one of those pre-pre diabetic types, but apparently there is something different about honey?

I would just like to start going to sleep earlier at night and feeling more refreshed when I wake up. That hasn't been happening this week. Last night I fell asleep around midnight (which is quite early for me) but slept til at least 9:30 and still didn't feel all that refreshed! I think I'm fighting off something or maybe it's getting back on regular Metformin schedule that's throwing my system off.

Anyway, it shouldn't hurt to give honey a try tonight.

I've not heard of this, nor the hibernation diet. It sounds very interesting! I may give it a try (the honey) as I have a terrible memory!

Yes...I'd like to believe there is something different about honey--especially raw honey, which has live enzymes (don't put it into really hot tea!)--but a part of me is skeptical.

On the other hand, I don't like to be close-minded about anything.

If one is of the opinion that honey is just a form of sugar and therefore not good for eating, it is DEFINITELY amazing for the skin, though! It has antibiotic and healing properties; some studies have found that it is more effective for wounds and burns than any medical treatment!

Hmmm interested. I want to believe in this because I love honey! And I also have horrible insomnia problems, even taking melatonin, valerian, passionflower, can't fall asleep without taking like 5-6 benadryl a night. I will just lay awake no matter how tired I am without it.

I've been reading on this some and thanks for doing that summary for us, PJ.

I figure it won't hurt anything to try it for a while. I don't want to lose more weight, but if it helps me get to sleep earlier and have a more refreshing sleep, that would be nice.

I have read about this but was afraid to try it being so low carb for so long and so afraid of carbs...lol
I did buy some really good raw honey and started using it in the morning in my coconut bark after many workout. I figured I'd I was using it right after I worked out the sugar wouldn't hurt me. I was so afraid to put that pure sugar in my body right before going to bed, just thinking about it turning straight into fat you know, but I have wanted to try it so bad. I can't sleep at night without taking 50mg of diphenhydramine. And even then sometimes I can't sleep. I will definitely be checking back to see if this helps and what it does to your weight, if anything.

That used to be me, now it takes 250-300mg to make me sleep I keep getting more tolerant. I need to stop this, it's horrible.

Strangely enough I have no problem NAPPING, I can go to bed in the afternoon and sleep with no issues, but I don't fall asleep at night.

Took around 1 T. of raw, unfiltered wildflower honey. Felt decadent and a bit scary to taste all that pure sugar. Was so good! Too good!

Oddly enough, I'm not afraid of it turning into fat, I'm afraid of what it will do to my insulin/blood sugar. I don't know enough about these things, I admit. I probably don't have anything more to worry about than I should be already when I have wine before bed or some carby item. But there is something about the idea of downing what I think of as "pure sugar"...

As I was slurping the honey off the spoon, I kept thinking how I wanted it on a big slab of lightly toasted bread! I could taste the bread with it in my mind, lol.

I am pretty sure my results are skewed because I'm still experiencing sicky feeling from getting back on a regular Metformin schedule. But here's what happened.

About 10:30 p.m. I took the honey.

By an hour later, I was getting sleepy, and I didn't fight it like I often do. Well, not for long anyway I went to bed at midnight.

I lay there what seemed like a long time unable to sleep. I even had some anxiety flashes - heart pounding, a bit of panic, but I shook it off. Finally fell asleep and stayed asleep until about 6:50 a.m.

Woke up not feeling well (thinking this is the Metformin) and had bathroom issues. Lay back in bed for about an hour and a half. Fell asleep til 9:30. There were some vivid dreams. (I need to stop watching TV/being on computer late, I blame it on that sometimes.) Anyway, more bathroom issues, plus the same "flu-like" symptoms as yesterday from the increased meds. All this will abate with a little more time.

I will try the honey again tonight. I'm going to give it at least 4 - 5 days and see if there's any difference.

Honey has a lot benefits. Whenever I feel even the slightest cold coming on, I nurse myself with hot water, lemon slices and a tablespoon of honey about 2-3 times a day until better. It's my "go to" cure. Haven't had the need for a sick doctor's visit in years. Nor do I take any cold/flu meds. I should also add that I take acetaminophen to offset some symptoms as well.

I did the honey thing last night, but I still took 5 benadryl so no idea. Tonight I may try to fall asleep without the benadryl. Yesterday the honey was not an issue since it was an up day but today, ugh... 1 tablespoon of honey is 65 calories, that's a big chunk of my daily intake!

Would you allow yourself the tablespoon of honey on top of your DD calories, or would you cut out some protein to fit it in? My day was all planned, so now I'm either 500 cals without honey or 565 with! I really hate to start bargaining with myself already so I guess I'll have to cut out something else.

Honey, for me, is just another yummy food with its own properties and health benefits. I'm not one who castigates sugars, so I enjoy honey sometimes, especially on toast with a lot of melty butter, but really have to lean over to eat it as the honey gets melty too and tries to drip off the toast. And this makes me want to make some Baklava, as I like the kind with honey the best! LOL

I've never had it before bedtime that I can remember, but I don't usually have any problems going to sleep anyway these days. Come to think of it, I used to a lot, but haven't for months and months and months now. Wonder if it's JUDDD that has regulated my *sleep mechanism* like this?

Since I'm doing MUDDDg, I will go ahead and start a FD at night, so I'm not sure how I would do this if it were a regular DD. On MUDDD, I always have FD at night (I don't switch to DD until the day after a FD, so I kind of cheat there too).

I haven't been having problems either really until the last week or so. I think it's due to a combination of things, and hope it gets settled down quickly. Until that happens, I guess I will keep trying the honey.

Oddly enough I have been taking 50mg of diphenhydramine now for about 4 yrs every night and haven't built up a tolerance. I have often marveled at that. Other things like caffeine I have built a tolerance. For but the diphenhydramine still works like a dream. I guess I'm pretty lucky but I still hate the dependence on it. I think allot of it, with me, is that I drink caffeine all day and then have to come down. I don't know but I drink coffee and I usually take a caffeine pill and sometimes I drink an energy drink. Im tied all the time it seems like. I would probably level it to bring normal if I would cut down on all of that but I would go through withdrawal big time. It's frustrating.

I take ephedrine and caffeine 3 times a day, but my insomnia started way before I started doing that. And the fact that I can take a nap right after taking my afternoon dose with no issues makes me think that it's probably not that.

I think we are exactly alike...lol. I didn't want to say I take ephedrine, people frown on that sometimes but I take a EC stack twice a day, ephedrine and caffeine pills, plus drinking coffee. And I will take that and sometimes be sitting at my desk falling asleep and then some days im so full of energy im fidgety. I think there is something more going on to. It doesn't make lot of sense.

Ah yes, I guess it sounds weird to take stimulants like this when you've never heard of it. I take the EC stack 3 times a day, 24mg ephedrine/200mg caffeine per dose, sometimes I do an ECA stack and add baby aspirin but not very often, I'm paranoid that it might hurt my stomach.

Hate to say it, ladies, but taking caffeine any time of day can mess with all sorts of hormones--cortisol, especially, which then interferes with sleep and weight loss.

Here's some info on caffeine & cortisol, as well as EC/ECA stacking:

Not trying to lecture you, but just because you can fall asleep immediately after drinking coffee/taking caffeine doesn't mean it isn't keeping you awake later.

It takes coffee about 4-5 hours to kick in for me. I've never been able to drink it in the morning to "wake up". I used to work a night shift, and drank my coffee around 8pm so I'd get that second wind around 12-1am, for the end of my shift and hour-long drive home!

Oh I know that caffeine is a factor, but it is one of many factors probably, as I had insomnia way before I started the EC stack. I read up a LOT before starting the EC stack, my initial reaction to it was no way, but then I read a bunch of controlled studies and they convinced me that it was safe and effective, I honestly have not had any negative side effects from it, even it instilled some crazy "nesting" instincts in me, I seriously cleaned my house from top to bottom one weekend and wouldn't stop. Now I've been taking it long enough that I no longer get the jitters or appetite suppression.

I read the article, it was interesting, I do know some that cycle it. I can't recall the scientific study I read though, that said that not cycling it did not decrease the efficiency of the ECA stack in obese females, so I am not currently cycling. I did stop taking it for a week while I was on vacation in November, didn't notice any change in sleep at that time. It was during my last pregnancy that the insomnia began, and at that time I was not taking any caffeine at all, but that is when I started taking Benadryl and since then I haven't managed sleep without it, I am pretty sure it is probably a psychological issue more than physical, as from what I read you can't get "addicted" to benadryl physically!

I have noticed that when I'm feeling anxiety or pressure AND I drink coffee in the afternoon/evening instead of just morning, it will affect me hours later as I lay in bed trying to sleep. Pounding heart, anxiety, etc. Other times, when I'm feeling on top of things, I could drink it before bed and fall asleep.

Here's one of my own guilty confessions: I usually have like, 8 cups of coffee every morning (up from 6 cups months ago)!! To me, the little lines on the coffee pot are just too small to be full cups!

Today I only had one before my stomach started bothering me, and I quit drinking it. So it will be great if I sleep better tonight.

Oops, just remembered I need to go take that honey

There was a book out years ago called Potatoes not Prozac that said eating a carby food before bed helped sleep as well as anxiety issues. Something about increasing seratonin uptake, I think. I wonder if this is just another take on that?

Possibly that is because more cortisol is produced when one is stressed, and caffeine results in cortisol spikes, so the two together are just too much!!! So it makes sense to me that when you're not stressed, coffee affects you differently.
