What are your UP/ DD numbers?

Seems like there is a huge range of daily calories around here. I'm just curious what everyone has found to be their own personal #'s. I'm doing 500 DD's and 2000 UDs. The 2000 seems so high compared to everybody else, but I seem to be losing OK with it. I just saw somebody with my goal weight that was doing 1200 for their UDs. That's a MD for me (I do one every Sunday). I figure the more I can eat and still lose, the better, right? So what's your magic JUDDD formula?

avecrain 01-02-2012 07:36 AM

Mine are in my info--currently 2101/420. I recalculate them using the JUDDD website every time I hit a new low weight. I think it's great that you are eating 2000 and losing! I personally think we should do as high UD numbers as we can if we are losing, and I don't personally support the trick of using your goal weight to calculate your numbers unless you have a documented slow metabolism/BMR. If you do, then you aren't feeding your metabolism to its full capacity on UDs.

oneoftwo 01-02-2012 07:56 AM

Well I am just two weeks in BUT I am trying to maintain (see stat in my sig). I have only been counting DD's with a max of 600 calories and not counting UD. I would assume I do not go over 2,000 calories MAX and I have been staying within a good spread of my goal weight so I am going to stick with it and see if this continues to work. I love not having to count carbs at all and calories on UD's !!

If I find I am gaining I am going to move to 600DD/1800UD
Good Luck

Knittering 01-02-2012 08:02 AM

I'm breastfeeding so my numbers are a little higher than they would be normally -- 650 DDs, 1880 UDs.

vilanteira 01-02-2012 08:37 AM

I'm at 500/1800, but most DDs I generally stay between 350-450. I know 1800 seems a bit high at my current and goal weight, but this was the number that finally got my weight moving down. I didn't really use any guidelines, but from the beginning I just tracked everything I ate along with weighing daily for a couple weeks to try and see a pattern, and for me, I noticed that when I upped to around 1800 on UDs, my weight loss would be more noticeable and would "stick".

I really do think after everything I've been reading that these DD/UD calorie numbers are highly individual regardless of your height and weight because of so many other factors, so everyone should really experiment for themselves and track their calories closely to see what works better for them. And like Avery, I'm definitely a fan of pushing that UD limit as much as possible in anticipation of maintenance levels once I reach goal.

itsmeshelly01 01-02-2012 08:49 AM

My numbers based on the website are 600\1900. I try to stay under 500 for DDs tho. But I do have that cushion in case. It I really hard to hit that 1900, especialy since I'm going to be giving up nutsfor a bit. I think I hvent been losing because I have been realy overeating nuts and not counting them properly. I'm sure I hve probably been going way over my UD cals just cuz of nuts. I'm gonna up my fat and things like that for a couple wees and see how that goes. If I do have a major craving for some nuts I havesome raw almonds and some cocoa roast almonds I put in individual baggies. I will not be jus grabbing the can anymore and eating and I won't be buying any salted nuts for awhile.

SlowSure 01-02-2012 09:08 AM

DD is approx 320 cals.

UD is approx 1600 cals by calculator but I typically eat 1200-1300 cals.

I'm attempting to reduce weight with this but I'm stalled/gaining (now 3 weeks in) so I may re-work these figures although I don't know to what as yet.

SoHappy 01-02-2012 09:30 AM

At my stats, my calories per day are given as around 1300 on the Calorie Calculators. And I would be one cranky, perpetually hungry, old woman if I had to continually hold my calories down to that level, day after day after day! :annoyed: I enjoy eating. For much of my years I've been a fairly big eater for my size, and previously.. without weight gain. At mid-life that all changed, metabolism crashed and burned, and something in the workings broke.

By doing JUDDD and embracing the health benefits of fasting in this alternating manner, I knew I could eat more on the opposing Up Day, so at least not be hungering on those days, but even better...

By pushing the UD calorie ceiling as high as possible while still losing weight, I was able to get my old and very sluggish metabolism running along at a much better pace! I'm now eating in a *range* of 500 to 700 on DDs and about 2200 to 2800 on UDs. And sometimes much lower or higher, depending on how the day is going. LOL

What I really had to resist was the temptation to lower my UD calories in order to lose weight faster. That old diet mindset kept insisting that if I could lose decently at the present calorie level, I would lose even faster if I lowered the cals. And I may have.. for a few weeks or months.. until my brain slowed my metabolism down even more to compensate for all those unending days of lowered calorie consumption.

So I bit the bullet and worked on pounding the UD calories up against my ceiling set at weight LOSS level, and gradually that ceiling could go higher and higher while weight loss was still possible. So my average daily calorie consumption has been increased over the time I've been doing JUDDD by several hundred calories daily (average), and I'm really thinking it was all so very worth it.

I didn't like the fasting to begin with, and often couldn't keep my days low enough, but gradually I got used to it and got to relish the DDs almost as much as the feasting days.

Ahhhhhhhhhh........ (big happy sigh)........ Life is good.

Ah, you've written my story!

And, to add.......it is so good to see you back.......I feel that 'the gang' is all here now!!!

Sazzie! You beat me to it--I was going to mark Pat's post as a good one--and I was going to bold the EXACT same words as you did!!:hyst:

I think we "golden girls" really have to stick to our DD numbers more than anything else. We can even go under our DD numbers and lose. But, those UD numbers are tricky--and we must find what works for each of us. If I go by "weight loss" calculators, I'm only allowed 1000-1100 each day in order to lose weight!!! As Pat said--:lol:I would be one cranky old woman trying to stick to those numbers each day!!
I'm almost 56 (next week---AAHHHHHH!!!), only 5'3" and 147 lbs. At those numbers, my DD/UD numbers are at 500 (or less)/1700. That's what's working for me right now--and I'm sure I'll have to adjust as I get closer to goal (about 125).

SoHappy 01-02-2012 10:01 AM

Ha! So I'm not the only older gal who doesn't intend to eat *delicately* for the rest of her life! (Snort!) :hyst:

I feel better than I have in years, and I'm eating better too. My only regret is that I didn't have this click in my brain any sooner. I'd been reading and following the calorie restriction/length-of-life studies & articles for several years and, DUH.. didn't consider how I might be able to use that in my own life. :p  Glad I finally caught on.

You hit the mark about the DD numbers!!! :high5:

I have become a lot more flexible with my UD numbers and eat quite freely because I want to push that piston to the enth degree. Thanks, Pat! :)

I tried lowering my UD numbers for a bit, and I stalled and actually started to gain. I was averaging 1050-1150 calories!

So, now, I am back to fully enjoying all the wonderful foods I deprived myself of for such a very long time.

I try to average the amount of calories it would take for me to release fat.
For me, that is about 1200-1400 calories. It does vary day to day.

handbells 01-02-2012 10:18 AM

UD-2033
DD-407

I usually eat way below my DD limit though. Usually.

alibaba 01-02-2012 10:59 AM

OK, I feel better about my numbers now. Looks like there are lots of us pushing (or going over) 2000 cals a day. I'm going to give my current numbers another month, and re-evaulate then. As long as I continue to lose, I'm going to eat as much as I can!

MintQ8 01-02-2012 02:11 PM

Yep - looking at your stats - they look good!!!

Mine are 2200/=<500 (that is the less than isn't it??) I started nearer 2350 - but I have lost 17lbs so adjusted accordingly - but - it has been interesting reading what people here have said. When I get to 2000 - I may just stick with it - and see - if I keep losing, great, if I don't, I can try going above or below.

LadyKT 01-02-2012 02:19 PM

I have a really interesting question...has anyone lowered their down day cals while keeping high up day cals? Like for instance, instead of eating 500 dd cals, eating more like 350, while keeping say 1850 ud cals? Or is this a no-no?

MintQ8 01-02-2012 02:23 PM

Absolutely - if I can, I stay at around 350 - but some days I need more!

Not a no-no at all, Katie. The focus on Down Days is fasting, and if someone wants to eat at a much lower calorie number than the popular *500* DD number, that's more than fine. And, in fact, many of us do, at least sometimes.

If you just want to fast completely free of any calories at all, that's fine too. Great, even. It's just that fasting is hard for some people to get into, particularly when part of their weight issues may be from their eating issues in the first place... it's hard to feel any hunger and not give in to the compulsion to eat. But doing DDs just on water or light fluids is perfectly all right if you wish to do JUDDD that way, and if your health is not compromised in some way that truthfully precludes a total fast.

I've done many DDs of under 250 calories. I usually stick to 500-600 if I'm in a little weight loss *correction* period, and I maintain in about the 500-800 DD range when I'm sitting happy with my weight.

So feel free to fast at levels lower than the generally accepted 500-calories if you wish. It will probably trigger even more corrective fasting-induced healthy results! Just be certain to eat very well on the following Up Days though.. plenty of nutrient dense foods and plenty of protein, etc. Since you won't be getting any nutrition on complete fasting days, you need to make sure the UDs are full of really good food and not much 'crap'..

My caloric intake on my DDs can be in any range as long as it does not exceed 500 calories. There have been days when I've had only 200, some others; 350, but never over 500.

*I* feel, that the DD calories not exceeding 500 calories are crucial to success.

When I first started JUDDD, I was unable to manage the 500 calories, so I started much higher and worked my way down to 500. Now, 500 is comfortable!

My UDs vary 200 calories of my limit on some days.

julietcc 01-02-2012 02:40 PM

For maintenance, I've been trying to keep my average under 1200 for the 2 days. I've been really good at keeping my DDs under 500 so my up days are usually somewhere between 1500 and 2000. Occasionally I'll have a free day so keeping it under 1200 when I'm counting UDs helps me maintain. It also allows for my occasional 2 UDs in a row! Since Christmas I've been bouncing around a lot between 116.4 and 113.4.

MLE 01-02-2012 03:09 PM

THIS is a great thread for us newbies! I thought the calculator on the JUDDD site was doing something weird for me coming up with over 1900 on UD's. But, from what you all have stated here, it seems that I should trust it and start there. THANKS! :)

JKat 01-02-2012 03:45 PM

I think its really an individual thing. (Depending on your health issues) It may need some adjusting as you go along.

I have to say that my calories on up days are high. I am suprised I am able to go that high. I am active. I also keep my DD calories very low. I have fasted occasionally this week because I was just busy with my mom and it was easier to fast than to try and figure out cafeteria food at the hospital. When I was checking I was around 2,200 (I have not been as good with this this past week due to family health issues.) I did loose 6pounds in 3weeks. This is week #4 for me. I am happy with my results so far. As long as the scale goes down a bit each month I am going to be happy.

LadyKT 01-02-2012 04:03 PM

Ok, one other question - what about eating only 1x a day on a DD? I'm failing miserably at this so far (my fault...left over M&Ms....it's all downhill from there) and I figured, if i can hold out until lunchtime (probably can), if I just eat a 350-500 cal lunch (i'm usually not hungry after lunch), would that be okay?

JKat 01-02-2012 04:14 PM

Katie..Whatever works best for you. You can eat 500calories all in one meal or split the calories up throughout the day. You also do not need to hit 500calories. Its okay to eat a bit less if you are satisfied. Its also okay to eat a bit more if you need to. Alot of judders have increased DD calories to 600 because that is what worked for them to stay on plan. Judd is very flexible. Ideally Dr. J says under 500calories on DD.

Me too, but my little guy isn't a nurse around the clock infant, so I only added a little bit. So my numbers are 500/1880.

Beeb 01-02-2012 08:54 PM

The DD numbers that works best for keeping me at my maintenance weight between 133 - 135 is 700/750. I go lower most days but seldom go higher.

The UD numbers are somewhere between 1750 and 2000. Most days are FDs now and I just eat to hunger. It's keeping me right where I want to be and I figure it if ain't broke, why fix it! ;)

Dottie 01-03-2012 05:57 AM

414/2068 according to the Johnson site but I keep it around 500-600/1800 and am doing well on that.
Looking forward to NOW since the holidays are over and my UP days won't include the sugary foods I had the last 2 weeks.
I'm happy as a clam maintaining with "forbidden" foods and 2300 cal up days BUT I want to get back to losing now!
