thoughts on artificial sweeteners?

I am wondering which ones are thought to be best these days in terms of low carb. Last time I was seriously low carbing was like 12 years ago and then I had some illegal liquid sucralose that I stockpiled. I think I threw the last bottle of it away, only half used, recently because it was well over ten years old. I also was feeling weird about using it because I think I was using quite a bit -- but I'm not sure if it was losing it's sweetening power from being old or if I had built up a tolerance to the taste.

Anyhow, what do you guys suggest? I need some sweet in my life and it's not going to come from *real* sugars of any kind.

Will always be arguments, I suppose on what is right and wrong.

I like Splenda.
Stevia is popular.

Anymore I use very, very little artificial sweetener of any kind. On the rare occasion I need something for sweetening on DDs, I use a bit of Splenda, either the little yellow packets or else in syrup.. like Davinci's or Walden Farms s/f Pancake Syrup. But this doesn't happen very often.

On Up Days, I just eat real foods, and so that includes real sweeteners too. So white table sugar and brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, molasses, etc.

Now, the thing is, not every UD includes anything sweet at all, so I don't really have sugar or other sweeteners all that much anyway.

But given the choice, I'm one who would opt for real sugar over artificial sweeteners, absolutely.

This sounds ideal, to use sweeteners so infrequently that you can afford to only use real ones. I get really set off by any real sugar, though. Just a little will snowball into a carb-fest for me.

So far, I've been using the yellow splenda packets and truvia. I am thinking of buying some liquid splenda, but I'm also wondering how truvia is in terms of carbs and cals. I never see people talk about it here at lowcarbfriends, so I'm afraid there's some problem with it that I don't know about.

I don't think so..... LOL I think there are some who choose the Truvia and like it.

My sister also chooses to stay away from almost all sweeteners of any kind, feeling that they trigger her into wanting more treats and carbs of all kinds. And she thinks even the artificial sweeteners seem to do it to her, so the only one she has found she can use that doesn't is Stevia.

She had to try a few brands to find one that she liked OK. I tried the liquid Stevia once.. I can't do that one!

My other sister is diabetic and uses the Splenda in the little yellow packets. But just to sweeten her coffee. Other than that, she just skips sweetened things.

Is there anyway you can try to avoid the need for sweetners at all? I stopped having any sweetner in my coffee and I discovered, voila, that I really don't like coffee. Amazing, right? A while back as an experiment, I cut out all artificial sweetners, diet soda, etc, and I think I lost 5 lbs just from that. Also, coffee (and red wine ) causes a sugar craving in me. So, I'm avoiding it. I don't want sweets and I can't stop at a "just a taste", so why should I hurt myself like that?

I won't call it a "frankenfood" but my quest for 2012 is to eat as *real* as possible, whole foods, etc. (ok, i admit, It starts tomorrow on the DD....kinda getting rid of the junk today ) I hear differing things on splenda/stevia/etc, and honestly, I listen to none of it. I just do what's good for me

I use splenda packets and Torani syrups. I like 2 splendas in my big tea thermos, so I probably have 5-6 packets a day. And a "glug" of syrup a couple of times a week.

My thoughts on sugar are that it is bad. Period. I don't care how "natural" it is, lots of natural things are bad....arsenic, mercury, wouldn't eat an oleander salad, you know? That being said, I do eat some sugar, I just try to cut it out as much as possible. Gary Taubes, whom I respect immensely, wrote an article that cemented my feelings about sugar:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/ma...pagewanted=all

I consumed splenda during both my pregnancies, and my kids eat probably 3-4 packets a day in tea or on grapefruit. I guess we are an experiment, huh? Anyway both of my girls are healthy, rarely get sick, slender, active, no braces, no glasses, and are in the top 5% of their class. I don't *think* the splenda is harming them at all. If some evidence comes out that there is a health risk, I'lll reconsider.

I have used them all and do use them all. I used to use probably 10 or more of the pink packets per day. This was before i knew they had carbs. Many years ago and it never effected me and i still lost over 100lbs. The last few years i have tried to be more healthy and more conscious of the AS but i still use it. I use liquid saccrin (sp) and use torani and davinci syrups. I have stevia in the raw packets and really like them. I can use 1 packet to sweeten my tea or coffee. I also have erythritol and i use it in my low cal muffins. When i am out and get coffee or tea i use either splenda or sweetnlow.
The only thing i did notice is that on my DD's i was feeling hungry certain times of the day and had a thought that it might be aspartame after reading alot here about that. So i cut out the crystal lite in my water and bought some of the MIO water drops, which are sweetened with saccrin and only use that on DD's. Made a huge difference. So now on DD's i stay away from aspartame totally. If i want a carbonated drink i make sure and get the ones with splenda, like shasta, and just use the MIO water in my water bottles.

I make my own blend of 1/3 each granular Splenda, erythritol, brown Diabeti Sweet and a tad of stevia. It tastes a bit like raw sugar. I don't use much sweetener so don't worry about the possible carbs in the granular type. I also enjoy DaVinci syrups in my protein shakes.

I try not to use any artificial sweetners! I really don't like the taste! I will occasionally have a diet tea or soda but not often.

I rarely add a sweetener/sugar to anything. That's not to say I don't eat sweet things!

If I'm having something already sweetened like soda, pancake syrup, jam, etc., I tend to buy the diet kind.

If it's a baked good like pie, cake, etc, I just make it as the recipe states - with real sugar. I try not to eat a lot of it.

On the rare times I want to add sweetener to tea or something, I use either Splenda or Truvia.

I've just discovered erythritol and I love it. It's a perfectly natural sweetener (like stevia), with almost no calories and no carbs. Unlike stevia, it's not bitter at all. I buy it from netrition as Zsweet, and it's mixed with a tiny bit of stevia to increase the sweetening power. Truvia is the same thing (Erythritol plus a little stevia), with a slightly higher proportion of stevia (I think). I powder it in my food processor before using it so it dissolves better.

The downside? It's expensive. But that's fine with me, because I use so little.

Shelly-

When I first started JUDDD 3 years ago, it was the DDs that showed me how much sweeteners stimulated my appetite. I didn't try changing types but just gave up sweeteners completely, and it's one of the best things I ever did for myself.

I don't eat food with sweetners often, but if I do, I use pure stevia. I have migraine and intolerance issues with so many artificial sweetners, so they're totally out for me. I use KAL brand pure stevia extract, which is the only one I've found that doesn't have a bitter aftertaste.

I've experimented with many different sweeteners throughout the years including erythritol with making pizzzelles and it just didn't cut it.

Using anything other than real sugar changed the consistency of the pizzelle, so for the last two years went back to using real sugar, and they are once again delicious, with the crispy, thin consistency.

I do have Splenda and Truvia in the house but rarely, if ever, use them.

They are here mostly for guests.

A vote for erythritol here

I use a bit of Splenda & stevia because I have them on hand already and they are convenient...also, I buy diet drinks (iced tea, soda, CrystalLight-type stuff, etc) & SF pancake syrup without being fussy about which sweeteners they use...but if I had to choose one sweetener, and money weren't an issue, it would be erythritol all the way.

I have been leaning towards doing this with my kids, too, but I think my husband will have a cow. He's avidly against giving them any AS. I think sugar is likely to be worse. If I give them AS, it would probably be some splenda, some truvia, maybe erythritol if I ever do any baking for them.

I also had two healthy splenda pregnancies.

I'm so addicted to diet coke. I hope it doesn't cause me to feel hungry. I don't think so. I've done fine having it on my DD's and when I do 24 hour fasts. I need to find some of that MIO. I haven't noticed it on the grocery store shelves, but I haven't been looking, either.

I'm really liking my Good Earth Sweet and Spicy Tea, which tastes really sweet but has no sugar or AS, just sweet spices. Before starting JUDDD I would have a cup with 1 T hwc, but now I'm liking it with SF coffeemate, but I make a 16 oz cup bc it's too sweet for my normal 8 oz. This is good bc I was going through those teabags at a record pace.

So, I went ahead and ordered some liquid splenda (and some other frankenfoods, lol, PB2 and a couple of WF dressings) and today I picked up a box of truvia at the grocery store.
