Hungry Girl 200 Under 200 Cookbook

Have any of you looked through this book?

I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas, downloaded the book, and then my Kindle Fire died! I'm supposed to be getting a replacement by UPS today, and I'm so anxious to look through the cookbook. Anyone know if there are any good recipes, or do I get to be the guinea pig?

Wow there are 504 reviews on Amazon. Sounds like a good book to have around for DD ideas.

I get her emails and some of the recipe have been posted from this cookbook and look really good. The only thing I don't like is all the frankenfood ingredients she tends to use. I have made a few of the low cal recipes using different "whole" foods and they are pretty good. Using "whole" foods also cuts out some of the calories. She has to use her sponsors ingredients but that doesn't mean we do! ;)

I also get her emails and like about 1 in 4 things she sends out.

No offense to her fans, but... she bugs.

That's too funny. I've never watched her, but found the cookbooks when I googled low calorie recipes! Is she totally obnoxious?

I have that one, the 300 cal one and the only one I don't feel is worth the $$ is the shopping guide because many of the items are regional, specialty, or just no longer made. You can do as well just reading labels in your own store:)

I got my Kindle Fire replacement (DH was nice enough to bring it to me at work because it got held up at UPS)! I'm going through the recipes and some of them sound pretty yummy.

I will definitely share when I try any that are good. I haven't really seen too many frankenfood ingredients yet other than shirataki, which I'm a huge fan of anyway. I've also seen a few recipes I can tweak to make them slightly lower calorie as well.

she uses a lot of low-cal and fat-free foods which have a lot of chemicals.
But the recipes, overall, are good.
Many of them are on her site (hungry-girl) so you can sample what they're like before you buy the books:)

This ^^^ is what I meant by Frankenfoods. And yes, the recipes are good and can be tweaked to get rid of these type of foods and still have a great low cal recipe!

I'll look forward to seeing some of the recipes posted when you folks find ones you like and get them modified with any tweaks you think are needed.

I'm another one who uses very, very little in the way of modified or frankenfood substitute foods these days.

Back in my low carb days my world was full of *substitute* foods. So I had lots of artificial sweeteners and syrups and artificially sweetened products, like Mt. Olive pickles and artificially sweetened drink mixes, etc. And then there were the substitute flours and bake mixes I used when I tried to make any baked goods.

Then when I discovered JUDDD and really got into that, I had a whole half of my refrigerator devoted to low fat and NO-fat alternate food items to use on my DDs. So doing about the same thing.. just with different foods!

These days I'm finally using almost all *just plain regular food* choices, and I just eat less on DDs and fully on my UDs. My refrigerator and cupboards aren't so jam-packed full of duplicate/alternate products, and my grocery bills are a lot lower. Plus, I like the taste of the real thing, whatever it is, as I always think the taste of artificial/alternate food choices is usually pretty off, and I have to lie to myself that I like that taste OK. :hyst:

But looking forward to reading some of the recipes you folks find to be yummy low-cal ideas.

I got this cookbook for Christmas!

There are some good looking recipes, but yes, they use a lot of frankenfoods,(which I don't eat. Unless you count gf stuff, which I don't. lol)

You can make substitutions though, as Beeb said.

What I didn't like about the book is that there are a lot of desserty type recipes. If I'm going to have dessert, I want dessert!

That's pretty much where I finally arrived too. I just save the desserts for UDs, and then have THE REAL THING !!!!!

Frankly, there are so many things that just don't translate well when you make them with substitute sweeteners, substitute flours, substitute fats, cheeses, etc. etc. I remember the first egg white Revolution Rolls (Oopsies) that I made, years ago. They looked so good. And, OMG. It's not that they weren't *something*..... It's just that they weren't rolls, and they're the perfect example of trying to pretend I really like something that is supposed to work as a substitute for the Real Thing. It doesn't, and I don't.

Just wait for an UD, and eat the real thing.

I totally agree with disliking the frankenfood! I look back on being on LC recipe board and remember how many recipes were full of odd ingredients, which I even tried occasionally, but found it took so much time/expense to get these off-the-wall "staples". I prefer the "normal" food. I still have almond flour in my freezer!! This is just my opinion...except the Chi Chi in my photo looks really good even though it has coconut syrup with high fructose in it!! hahaha

handbells 01-02-2012 12:46 PM

I do use almond flour, but only because we are going gluten free.

Wine2 01-02-2012 03:15 PM

Ya, I actually love Almond flour, too, because it's only almonds, but I couldn't remember how to spell some of the frankenfoods that have 14 letters in them! :)
