Why Do YOU Stay Low/Lowest Carbs?
 
I am not watching carbs anymore and haven't for awhile but I tend to still eat moderately LC most days without realizing I'm doing it.

I don't do this on purpose, but it just happens because of my food choices. Carbs are NOT the devil I thought they were so eating them is not an issue at all, but the good habits (whole foods) I learned from LCing seem to have carried over to my JUDDD WOE.

If you are still LCing while I JUDDD I would like to know why you do it? Is it for the health benefits? Are you afraid to eat more carbs since you have been LCing for sometime and am not sure what eating higher carbs is going to do to you? OR is it just like me, no conscience choice to not eat LC, it just happens that way?

I have afraid to eat them. Have been eating mostly green vegetables and protein before starting JUDDD. I am going to start eating a few starchy type carbs. Part of the reason for my thinking JUDDD is the way to go for me is I wanted to be able to eat different foods. Not white bread though for sure. I did eat a half cup of peas and half cup of pumpkin yesterday on my UD. Yay. lol. Not sure what else to add. It's been a year since I have had anything that I would truly call carby.

I just do it mostly out of habit too. Why have regular rice when I like cauli-rice more and it's got some nutrients in it. Plus, it has way less calories than rice. It's like that for a lot of high carb/low carb choices. Why bother with a regular chocolate bar when a protein bar is better, less calories and has much more "staying" power!

I do eat bread now. My favorite is rye but that was always the case before low carbing :) Other high carb things I now enjoy are sweet potatoes (found it hard to demonize my beloved sweet potatoes!) and popcorn :)

I think I would do it because of diabetes...and because I truly believe that sugars in the diet and non-ancestral foods (wheat, rice, etc) are unhealthy in the long run.

Some people can handle them, but that does not mean they are not damaging to the body anyhow. Even if they don't cause blood sugar fluctuations in a person, eating sugars causes other damage, like oxidation in the arteries (which leads to high lipid levels).

Now, this is not to say that I would not (if I had the choice) indulge on special occasions (birthday, christmas, etc). But as an everyday thing, I believe a diet free from wheat, sugar etc is healthier.

This is one of the things I was having trouble with during my JUDDD trial run. I ate fruit, I ate wheat products...and while it was SO NICE to be able to eat those things again, I could not reconcile that with the damage I knew they were doing to my body. Also, despite my blood sugar being able to handle it (I tested a LOT) I knew that my pancreas was having to produce more insulin to deal with these foods, and therefore contributing to the possibility of earlier beta cell burnout. Which terrifies me.

So lets just say that, if I give JUDDD another go, I will do it in a lower carb way!:) For my own peace of mind. Also, staying lower carb keeps hunger at bay. BUT...the dark side may still have its cookies on holidays;)

I keep mine lower than the standard amercican diet, for sure, but because I lose and feel better at that level.
In my 6 weeks on juddd, I've found that corn based products don't bother me; mildly wheaty products (low-carb tortillas, pitas, etc) are ok as long as they're not every day; and full wheat products (regular bread, sugary pastry's etc) are a no-no.

I'm still eating at a much lower than standard carb level while JUDDDing because I don't eat wheat products at all and very rarely refined sugar (except for tiny unavoidable amounts that come in some sauces and foods). Most grains (but especially wheat) and even moderate amounts of refined sugar cause a lot of painful digestive issues for me and bring back acid reflux too, so they don't tempt me.

I will eat rice and rice-based products like rice noodles occasionally since I can tolerate that better, which works for me since I can have sushi or noodle soup once or twice a month, or have Asian or Indian food from time to time. So during those times my carbs may jump to even 200+ for the day, but for the most part my carbs are pretty much below 40 with the occasionally increase to about 70-80.

I don't restrict myself when it comes to veggies, so that's where most of my daily carbs come from. I've also discovered that I can actually have large amounts of dairy/cheeses and nuts without problems as long as I keep everything within my calorie limits for both DDs and UDs, so the carbs in those don't have a negative impact on me either. Oh, and oddly enough I've never really liked fruit that much except for berries anyway, so I think all in all my carbs are just naturally lower in general I think. The carbs that I eat now are the ones my body can tolerate and also happen to be the ones I like to eat, and it hasn't affected weight loss at all so it works out really well. :)

I try to stay low to moderate carb because too many carbs make me feel extra snacky.

That is funny because I noticed that I tolerate rice MUCH better than wheat...A couple of weeks in Japan proved that!

Yeah, it does seem to be different for everyone what type of carbs they can tolerate better, but I'm definitely happy that I can handle rice as opposed to wheat since I like rice much better. :clap:

I think I have a wheat sensitivity...I can tell instantly if a food contains wheat...even a small amount. I get bloated up like you would not believe! Rice on the other hand, has no effect. And my blood sugar is not bothered by rice, apparently.

I suspect I have the same too, either a wheat sensitivity or maybe a gluten sensitivity. That's very interesting though, about your blood sugar. I know rice triggers a significant blood sugar spike in my diabetic friend so she avoids it, but I guess this must be an individual thing as well.

Yeah, it is..diabetics need to test individual foods to see what their reactions are, because it can be very different from person to person!

I doubt I will be eating much in the line of grains. Unless the ezeckial bread, and josephs products, or those light wrap things. I'm more interested in getting back to eating the more starchy type vegetables. Sugar is out totally. No more sugar for me.

I found during my low calorie/low carb approach to my weight loss (9 Months 50#loss) and successful maintanence (1 1/2 years, another 20# lost) I was able to eat more if my calories were low carb. About 200 calories or so more. Which as this group has found out means a lot if one is eating low calorie. I found my rosacea was inflamed if I ate too much wheat (pasta). I do have pasta on rare occasion but in small controlled quantities. Cannelloni for example or manicotti. Not tongs full. Concurrent to this weight loss, one of my son's was diagnosed with Crohn's. I would model what he should be eating and I found out it was good for me too.

I have been eating low carb for so long that it also just comes natural for me. I do eat more veggies and fruits and I will have the occasional bite of something carby or a cookie once in a while. I have found with some experimentation that I can't tolerate a ton of sugar but I can tolerate it better off... don't have fat with it, which can be hard. I also don't tolerate wheat products well. The occasional low carb tortilla or light wheat bread is not too bad but I have to be careful. I get bloated and I can be up 3lbs easy from just a little bit of bread or refined sugar. I can eat about 100 carbs and be ok but I feel better when they are good carbs. On average most of the time im under 50 and quite a bit of that will be fiber.
