dasiey 11-30-2011 06:24 PM

No, Just wondering did you give up caffeine or something?

julietcc 11-30-2011 06:25 PM

I got headaches just about every down day the first week. Drink lots of water and don't give up your coffee if you're a caffeine addict like me!

Up you DD calories to 500 and I think those headaches will go away. ;) I never had a headache but I also started JUDDD doing up to 700 calories on my DDs. You don't have to stay 500 or under, it's just a recommendation, but lots of us have done 600 to 700 calories on DDs and done fine.

Boy did I have these..

I added some V-8 juice on my DD and that seemed to really help a LOT!!

tiva 12-01-2011 06:09 AM

If it's not a caffeine issue, it could be an electrolyte issue with such low calories. V-8 is a great suggestion, but aim for the low sodium V8, which is much better balanced with potassium. Chicken broth can also help. Be aware of how much plain water that you're drinking. Some people over compensate and drink excessive amounts of plain water, which can send electrolytes out of balance.

Dr Daugirdas , author of the QOD diet (another every-other-day diet with very low calorie days) really stresses getting adequate potassium and sodium on your down days: Every Other Day Diet

I still get headaches during the evening on my DDs. They aren't horrible, but they are certainly there. Yesterday I saved up a couple hundred calories just for the evening. When the headache hit, I ate 100 calories and the headache eased off. I am hoping the headaches go away eventually, but if they don't, I am okay with that. I am soo happy with the results I am seeing with JUDDD!

I also get headaches the evenings of my DDs. If I have the calories I will eat something with protein which does help. Otherwise, I drink lots of caffeine and Advil.

thanks for the info...i haven't given up caffeine but have increased my water intake so maybe that is throwing those pesky electolytes off....i'm better today and may try to up my dd calories tomorrow i just wanted to give it the cleaneast attempt that i could for the first 2 weeks and my 20% is only 363-400 so i thought me even going upto 420 woulda helped....i'm so far losing which is great!!! so i'm thankful....also thankful for your support...i'm excited to see results...i can live with the headaches it's just painful...i will look into potassium and salt intakes, i bought broth the last time i was at the store so i'll give that a whirl...thanks again!!!!

One of the things I think is happening too.. is that we have suddenly changed our diet and our body hasn't had time to shift everything to balance with this new way of eating.

Many of us notice a week or so of strong *Induction Flu* symptoms when we halt our standard high-carb diet and start low carbing. I think it's likely that our brains have everything pretty well set up to receive a certain nutrient blend and quantity, and when that is altered, our body chemistry is thrown off a bit. And there are resulting physical symptoms of that imbalance which can feel unpleasant.

I think the same is true when we start an alternate day diet plan. Our brain has to get used to a new feeding cycle. Headaches aren't unusual for a bit as we get into JUDDD either. Rats! But we get used to it, which is why after awhile fasting days don't much bother us anymore. We get to where we aren't stimulated to feel much appetite on DDs, and our body gets used to the fasting days and doesn't give us headaches anymore.

You might up your DD calories a bit for a week or two, to help your body get used to the DDs more comfortably, and then easy the DD calories back down after that.

Good luck in adapting to this remarkable plan for health that also happens to promote weight loss along the way.. Oh, and those delightful Up Days of fine dining!

I only had a horrible headache on the one DD that I tried to save all my calories for later in the day. Some people have great success on DDs doing that, and they can eat dinner w/their fams, etc. But, when I tried it, I was fine until 2 PM--then I got a KILLER headache that didn't go away the rest of the day.

I hope this passes quickly for you!

Celery is a great source of potassium.
If you get tired of munching on it raw, chop some up and cook it in broth
(homemade bone broth, cooked with a splash of vinegar to release the calcium in the bones, is best...but a bouillon cube or whatever is fine, too!).
Add a dash or two of "fake salt" or "lite salt" (NuSalt is what I have)--it's also a great source of potassium, and cheeeeap!!! lol

I don't like the flavor/mouthfeel of NuSalt, but if I just shake a little into something that is already salty and flavorful, I don't notice it much.

Personally I think that drinking "lots of water" can backfire--it washes a lot of minerals and electrolytes out of your body, especially on low-calorie days. You can find recipes online for mineral water (adding calcium and magnesium to your water).
