How Did You Choose Your Goal Weight?

I reached my goal a couple of days ago...but when I stopped to think about it...i couldnt remember WHY I had chosen that particular number!

I think I just wanted to be in the 130's, and my goal of 135 was smack in the middle!
For a 5ft 5.5" 40 year old, it feels like a good weight...US size 6-8 clothes (uk 10-12)..bmi 22.

I think I may aim to get another couple of lbs off though....to about 133...just to have room for some scale bouncing!

How did you Juddders chose your goals? And if you have got to goal...did you move the goalposts?

hugs
Jo

I was 145 and quite thin when I graduated high school and the 140s seem to be my "set-point" - the weight I am at naturally and that looks fine for me. I never had to diet or exercise to maintain this weight back when my metabolism was better.

I have been lower, much lower - into my 120s and I was scary-thin and stopped menstruating. My doctor was quite alarmed at how much weight I'd lost. That was back when I first started Metformin and had no appetite (plus bathroom issues that would be TMI).

I could have picked the upper 140s as my goal weight, but felt this was too close to the 150s, so right in the middle gives me some room either way.

I can get down to 135 - 138 and still look good, so who knows, I might go down there eventually, but for now, I will be happy when I get to 145.

I identified mine by recalling a low weight at which I previously felt comfortable.

In my mind, though, the goal weight was tied to a size goal, which is why -- now that I've (pretty much) met my goal -- I might set a new goal weight that's lower. I still haven't met the size part of the goal (I'm about 10 years older, lol, which could have something to do with it! ), but I think that getting off 5 - 10 more lbs will do it.

I've always said that I don't care how much I weigh, really -- it's the size that matters to me.

Long ago I would have said something between 145 and 160 lbs. But 20 years ago I got
up to about 350 lbs. So if I ever get all this weight off I have a bad feeling I am going
to have quite a few pounds of extra skin to deal with. But how large a problem that will
be only time and weight loss will tell.

I keep bumping mine 5 pounds lower at a time so I guess the answer for me is where I feel I look good then I'll go 5 pounds under that so I have a buffer.

I was in the 130's in highschool but know that after five kids that would be pretty hard and even then I remember really watching what I ate and working out alot. At one point I got down to 115 and I was so thin looking. I gained the majority of the weight with my first kid (I took the eating for 2 to the extreme, I think I ate for 10, lol). Over the years I have taken off the weight and gone up and down so much. The lowest I ever got was 170 and that took quite a bit to get there. So I am thinking 150 is a happy medium.

My first goal is to get under 200
Then my second goal is 170
and my ultimate goal is 150

but i am open to see how i feel at any point during my journey and adjusting it as needed.

165 seems so elusive to me, lol.

I was about 155 before I got pg with our son. Um, 11 years ago
And I haven't seen that number since.

I looked pretty dang good at that weight. I also train with weights so I carry a decent amount of muscle. I'm not petite by any means. I'm tallish and have an athletic build I guess you would say. Although I have gotten down to 135(from 189!) in 6 months time without trying all that hard. ahhh to be young(er) I took it a bit too far. 135 was too scrawny. I've had my share of going up and down the scale. But this time I am going down and STAYING!!!

I choose 165 as my goal to START. I will know when I get there

I weighed 140 in high school and looked good, but that was 30 years and 4 kids ago. So I chose 150 as a weight I might be able to maintain. ( I am 5'8") I also will have a lot of skin to deal with, thinking seriously about surgery when I get to goal. Arms and tummy need some serious help.

originally i just made a goal to be non-overweight by bmi standards, but i made that when i started and i had never tried losing weight before and just sort of assumed that it wouldn't work for me and that i was built to be chubs. when it started working immediately, i pushed my weight loss goal down. i landed on 160 because it was a nice even number that sounded to me like the "weight of a normal person" (that's so bad) and left me losing an even 80 pounds over the course of this weight loss journey.

now i'm thinking 160 might be too low for my body, but i'm keeping it around to see. i talked to my sister, who has a nice healthy body, and she's about 160 at 5'6.5, and i'm more muscular than she is. however, honestly, i think part of her was just a little scared at the thought that i might be skinnier than her at the end of this (she's abroad in france right now, so hasn't seen any of my weight loss progress.

we'll see though, about the goal. i think i'm going to try to lose 20 more pounds (to bring me down to 195), and then get my friend to test my body fat and help me determine an ideal weight to reach for. i know it's at least less than 195, so i'd rather get some more fat off before i get pinched everywhere, lol.

150 is my lowest diet weight. I reached this on my first time Low carbing...

Didn't maintain very long though.

I look pretty at this weight. No one would every accuse me of being fat and it is in the middle of my normal BMI range.

My vanity goal weight is 135. College dancer weight

I was 230+ a few years ago..and I wanted so desperately to just get below the 200 mark and I wouldn't care what I weighed after that.

Of course I cared
I am very much into the gym and I want to LOOK like I belong in the gym.
No way ccan I be satisfied of just being where I am now. But that's the beauty of it all. there is always room for progress! And not just how much I weigh but body comp as well.

And I would loooove to rock a bikini next Summer. I've never worn one in my life.

I chose 150 because it is in the healthy range for my height. I guess I wanted to be 'healthy' but not too skinny and not too close to the top range either...so I chose it and we will find out what I look like/feel like when I get there. If I have to adjust it, I will do so Right now I just want to get closer....

Hmm, the numbers I was at 20 years ago just don't look the same any more, I had to lower my goal ten pounds. Hope it will be low enough. Basically, I want to try on a size six in any store and have it fit. I used to be much curvier, but now have a much more boyish figure, so I'm kind of guessing at things. Want my flappy belly to go down more so things fit better.

The picture to the left was when I was 98 pounds (fully dressed in afternoon doctor's office). I don't plan on reaching that...was sick at the time. I looked great at 130 when I got married, but don't have the same figure.

I based my goal on previous weight loss goals (too numerous to say here). I'm hoping, based on other peoples experience, that I will be lowering it some more. But, for now, I'd be SO thrilled just to reach THIS goal! Maybe a Christmas present to me!!

I chose 150 as a goal weight because I'm supposed to have a goal weight. I can't remember when I was last under 200 lbs. 150 is a general number... still "overweight" by a bit on my frame, but since I can't imagine it, it's not really real to me yet. Even "overweight" would be a hell of a lot better than the "super obese" I'm currently carrying around.

I fully expect that the number may change as I get closer to it, and see how my body reacts as it gets smaller.

But for a stab in the dark, 150 is it.

I have this problem right now, only I just started back at university, so I have *no* money! I'd never have imagined ANY downside to getting smaller

As a solution I am frequenting flea markets and charity shops. They have some great stuff sometimes!

agreed! that's why i'm not stressing about these last 15 pounds because I am enjoying all the clothes I bought when I lost my first 30.

everytime i hit a goal i usually lower it by 10. my goal originally was 145.
(my highest ever was about 170+).

You can find some really good stuff at a thrift store! You have to be willing to go through a lot of junk to find it, but how is that different from ordinary shopping?

For some of us who have 50 or more lbs to lose looking at a height weight table to
pick our goal weight may be a little misleading. In my case a acording to a heigh weight
table I should weigh about 150 lbs. But back 32 years ago I lost down to 138lbs and then
gained about 212 lbs back. I am now about 75 lbs less than my all time high weigth and
know if I ever get thin again I will have a lot of excess skin to deal with. After doing a Google about this I found that after a massive weight loss the amount of extra skin you
have may varry a great deal sometimes verry little but sometimes this may be 60lbs or more! So I am almost positive my goal weight should be higher than 150 but how much
higher I don't know maby when i lose another 50lbs i will have a clearer idea.

Now for a sort of joke about my old weight loss.

Years ago I had an old platonic girl friend i had known for years over to watch a movie Her finances were verry tight and I heard her complaining that she was running out of clothes to ware. I asked her to stand up and turn around. After looking at the size lable in her jeans I told her I will be right back. I went to my closite and found a pair of jeans I had bought when I was 150lbs lighter and never worn. I handed them to her and said " Carrol I gave up trying to get in your pants long ago do you want to try to get into mine?" It realy worked out well she didn't even have to have them hemed.

I chose 132 because that's where I was before I got married and started taking birth control pills. Those made me gain a good 5 lbs. that I could never really get rid of. I've always been curvy..I'm Latin..so I think 132 looks good on me. Of course when I reach that, I fully reserve the right to adjust down if needed!
