Peppermint extract from the baking aisle at the grocery store might be cheaper than essential oil from the health food store, and you could always use the former in the kitchen (although I am sure you could find uses for the latter, too).

I put a rolled-up piece of paper towel (cotton balls would work) in a tiny pill bottle (actually a vial for blood glucose test strips), then poured in a little extract. I just found it on my desk...I must have made it over a year ago, but it still has a powerful smell!

I dabbed little bit of essential oil on my wrist so I can smell is all day. So far my appetite is under control but too early to tell if it is placebo effect or something else.

I found it in the pantry and have used it several times today. It seems to work pretty well!

I am also going to drink peppermint tea today

I hope the peppermint experiment will work!
Marika,
How do you use it for the ants? Neat, or diluted in water?
I read somewhere spiders don't like peppermint either - a few drops in a spray bottle & sprayed around places spiders like to come in. I have spearmint oil right now, I was going to try it as soon as I got an empty spray bottle. Spider season is starting up and I H.A.T.E!!!!!!!!! spiders! But I also hate chemicals in my house.

I've also heard that spiders don't like the smell of oranges, so it's a good spider repellent. Spray orange cleaner or essential oil around the house, or leave orange peels in the basement/wherever you don't want them critters!

Thanks PJ! Dad just bought a house in Cali with its own orange grove so we're well supplied with oranges...at least as long as he's willing to make the trips back & forth. Once he decides to stay south for good, I think we're gonna be out of luck!
I'm usually an "All Gods Creatures" kinda girl, even other bugs don't bug me. But I can not abide spiders in the least.

I hear ya...I don't feel guilty about repelling them, though, compared to killing them!

They eat bugs so I try not to hate them too much. But I've had a few friends get horrible abscesses from spider bites so they make me quite nervous!!!

I try to remember that too, and I'm usually ok with them if they're outside. But inside my house all bets are off. So I'd prefer to just keep them out!!

Yenny, I hated spiders and almost had a phobia with them until I ordered the below. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I have had it now for quite a few years and it will pick up the smallest to the BIGGEST spiders without a problem. It doesn't harm even the most fragile of creatures either.

I now can see a monster spider and get my catcher and put it outside with no problem at all.

for ants you put a drop or 2 of Peppermint oil on their ant trail... the ants will not cross it so try to find where they are coming in the house from to stop them. The oil burns them.

For hunger, I wonder if you start smelling it before you get hungry, or afterward lol.

Love your avi, Laura. Your puppy looks so cute peeking around the side!

I don't know. I just bought some a bit ago.

I spilled it already on my computer chair. UGH

but I am just sniffing every now and then. will do that thru the day and see what happens.

I am going to experiment on down days only so I don't get used to the smell and loses its effectiveness (Heck I don't know, sounds good to me tho. Up days I won't use it unless it seems so fab on down days that I can't live without it heehee)

Sniffing it made me hungry. So I put just enough to taste it on my tongue. Its strong but it helped more than just sniffing it.

I've sniffed for a few hrs every now and then. not hungry

but I just put a roaster chicken in the oven. My down day and I am getting hungry now.

when I smell that chicken you know that will take priority over that peppermint LOL

I think I need at least 5-6 down days under my belt to say if it helped me at all. I will try for a bit and just see.

I dont have peppermint but I did have some spearmint. There have been some small ants the last few days and I found where they were outside. Dabbed some spearmint on their trail and - no more ants!

Love natural stuff. Anyone got anything for wasps? Maybe I can repel spiders, ants, wasps AND my appetite!!!

I have to go find it but I had some peppermint oil which was recommended to me to dab on the back of my neck to help deal with hot flashes. It was very cooling on the skin.

I sniffed my peppermint oil ... it helped for a min. The problem might be I'm in the middle of making burritos. I work thirds so his dinner is my breakfast. I tend to get tasting before food is done a bit too much. But didn't pick at the olives in the fridge while I was cooking so that's a step forward.

I used some of the spearmint oil on the small trail of ants I found outside, which I think is where the 3 ants I found in my kitchen were coming from. Dabbed it on my finger then applied to their trail. GONE!
So I think, at least for this application, I can use spearmint oil too. And I have an empty spray bottle in my horse trailer, I just need to remember to go get it and bring it in the house. Course, when do I remember? When I'm sitting down on the computer. By the time I log off, all memories of getting the spray bottle are gone. <leaky brain syndrome>

Will a York Peppermint Patty work? LOL, just kidding ...

On the serious side, I remember granny in Albuquerque always carried a bottle of peppermint oil in her purse. She used it to help us kids at the first sign of car sickness -- it worked well.

DH and I love to use lavender oil to help us sleep at night. It really has a soporific effect - we dab it on our pillow cases. Sometimes I think it helps more than taking melatonin.

Just received my order of Theanine Serene with Relora. My DH has had a whopping case of insomnia since starting JUDDD. We are looking forward to seeing if it helps in the next several weeks. I've read such good things about it from my JUDDD buds on this board.
