and congratulations on your incredible success! Wow! I would say you could start at maintenance calories (whatever the JUDDD calculator gives you for maintenance) and there are a couple of maintenance ranges to choose from. If you want to lose a little bit more, you could start at the high end of the WLM/maintenance range, or just jump right into maintenance. Many of our maintainers continue to lose at their higher calorie limits. |

I'm in! I started yesterday with a DD, which was easy because I was tired and not very hungry. I've had insomnia since I started back on low carb a few weeks ago and the lack of sleep is starting to take a toll on me. I'm hoping that switching to JUDDD and adding a moderate amount of carbs will help me sleep better.
I looked up my UD/DD numbers on Dr. Johnson's website and I'm already using *********** to track what I'm eating, so that part will be easy. I also have the *********** app on my phone so I can log foods when I'm away from the computer. I started my UD this morning with a 2 egg omelet, a buttered sesame seed bagel, and coffee with soy milk for 545 calories. That leaves 1335 calories to go! |

on your incredible weight loss!!!!One of the maintenance level ratios would be a good place to start!! You'll feel your way and yes, it is a trial and error type of thing, but not for long. I so understand not wanting to go back to HCG or any other diet. I too, am an HCG vet!!! Quote:

New to JUDDD
Hi-
I'm new to JUDDD. I got my calories: UD 1920 DD 384. 384 seems low- this is safe? I'm 5'2'', 188 Lbs, 35 yrs old. I plan to stay under 20 net carbs on UD and plan to stay under 25 net carbs on DD. Any feed back is welcome!!! Thanks, Carly |

General consensus is start your DD at 500 calories and work your way down if this isn't effective (after the first 2 weeks). |

If you read Dr. Johnson's book (The Alternate Day Diet) you may find it very helpful. He does suggest as has already been said, that if doing 20% is too difficult in the beginning for you then choose 25% or 35%. Did you notice the pull down menu on the calculator? It's up to you to decide where you want to start. Dr. J actually recommends startint at 500 calories for the DDs of your first two weeks. This will activate your SIRT1 genes and built up the special enzymes you need for fat blocking/burning, muscle preservation and weight loss (inches loss too!) Respect your up day calories and try to eat up to or very close to them on UDs. Be sure and check out the DD recipes. Once you get into the rhythm of counting calories, you will find that you can eat a lot of nourishing foods on your DDs and get a lot of bang for your 500 calorie "bucks!" Keep reading and learning. Then dive in! The Judd water is fine! ![]()

Just don't go crazy on your UD and eat lots of donuts! I did & regained all 3 lbs I had lost in the first few days! Live & learn! Now I'm just eating more healthier foods and limiting the junk.
Just saying this so others can think twice before diving into the junk on an UD. I had to start over and today I'm alittle below my lowest wt after 3 days. Whew! |

I'm wanting to give JUDDD a shot. When I did my calculations on the website, it says I should eat 1655 calories on UD and only 331 on DD days???? How in the heck does one get by eating 331 calories a day? It only goes up to 427 even if I exercise moderately 3xweekly. I mean gluc pudding and shiritaki noodles may be filling, but I'm not at all sure eating under 500 calories a day is healthy. ?????

If you went to Dr. Johnson's website to calculate your calories, you may have missed the paragraph above the calculator: "The Induction Phase – 2 Weeks During the first two weeks of the diet, your Down Day calorie intake will consist of no more than 20 percent of what you would normally consume. A calorie counter is provided below so that you can figure out what your normal calorie intake and Down Day calorie intake should be. However, to simplify matters, Dr. Johnson has rounded off daily intake to 500 calories for Down Days during the induction phase. " If 500 calories is working for you, there's no need to move down in calories after induction. Some are able to go as high as 700 calories on DDs, some are not. You'll need to adjust to see what works for you. As always, check with your doctor before starting a new eating plan. Last edited by oropendola; 03-25-2012 at 04:26 PM.. |

Thanks O. Some how I DID miss the part on the website about Dr. J rounding DD intake to 500 calories. I just decided to try JUDDD today and will officially start my first DD tomorrow (since I've had 590 cals. today).

Buttoni, if you're going to have a DD tomorrow, please make sure to eat up to your UD calories today so you go into it well fueled. While it's perfectly healthy to eat less than 500 calories a day, it's not healthy to do it too many days in a row. Plus, it's much easier to get through a DD after a good, healthy UD.

I just took care of that by eating some of my low-carb cheese crackers and a bowl of soup bringing me up to 1597 calories, which is within 50 of my UD. I'll get that last 50 calories down before I go to bed. Thanks for the tip. That occurred to me awhile ago and I went and fixed that bowl of leftover Sausage and Greens Soup.

Well I have decided to give JUDDD a try! I have been reading alot of your posts over the last few weeks, and I keep hearing how flexible and forgiving JUDDD can be, and that is what I think I need! I will be staying relatively lowcarb with it for now, as I find once I eat breads/pasta, I just want more.
I did my first DD on Friday, as I was traveling and was easy to just stay fueled by mostly coffee and water, then a small dinner when I got home. and yesterdays DD went well also, ended the day with 524, a few more than I was aiming, but close enough I hope as I figure out the best DD recipes! Nice to meet you all! |

![]() ![]() Buttoni and Boop (sounds like a firm of Solicitors or something, lol).It appears you are both off to good starts. It is important to eat up to those UD so that your body is nicely nourished for your DDs. Just to give you an idea of how wonderful even a DD can be... I have been to the gym and done an aerobic/toning class. I then had a small latte 85 cals. I find this is as good as any meal at filling me up. I came home and prepared a huge blenderful of Gazpacho, whole thing less that 320 calories. I vary the recipe all the time but will post an approximation of it in the DD recipe thread soon. I am still not really hungry although it is almost 2.30 so I am going to busy myself around the house. Water will be my friend. At around 4pm I will probably have a cup of tea with skimmed milk. May even have a 28 cal cookie with that. This evening I am planning the to enjoy half of the soup with DH then give him some chicken, veggies and baby potatoes. Depending on how hungry I am I may have a little of the same meal as his, or a small low fat dip (75 cals) on a cracker or two. Later I will add this up but I know from experience that this is a good DD. Just though you might like a window on the world of a maintainer. I can eat up to 700 on my DDs but I love a good low one now and again to keep the skinny gene busy! Enjoy your new JUDDD adventure..

Thanks Kissa. Looking forward to "testing the JUDDD waters" with a low-carb twist. I'm very carb sensitive and feel I can't re-introduce carbs too much. I also started taking Resveratrol about 1-1˝ months ago and dropped a few pounds. Not sure if it was a factor or not, but maybe the resveratrol is "activating" my SIRT1 gene already! LOL

Lots of folks here do a very LC version. I though I would be doing that myself but was astounded to discover that on JUDDD my body seemed to react to carbs in a different way.
Just make it work for you. JUDDD doesn't mind what we eat, as long as you are happy and the calories are right all should go swimmingly. |

Hi all! Well, today is the day. Hubby and I are starting JUDDD and we figure that today really is the first day of the rest of our lives. I'm about 15 lbs heavier than I'd like to be, but it's rising each year and I'd like to reverse the trend starting now. Hubby is 25 lbs overweight, at least and not very great at sticking to any plan.
We've done the Low Carb thing but hate the sense of being limited and deprived. If it's my kids birthday I want to eat some cake. If we are invited to a pizza party I want to be able to eat a piece of pizza. Anyway I've spent a couple of days looking around the group here, reading threads and getting more info before taking the plunge. I'm so excited to find such a wonderful and informed and supportive group as I start this journey. |

Hi - I've been lurking for some time. I did low carb for several years and decided it was time for a change. I want an eating plan that allows my boyfriend and I to enjoy going out to eat without having to worry about how many carbs are in a meal.
We started JUDDD about 2 weeks ago. I read the book and found it very convincing. So far, I've lost maybe 4 lbs. I'd like to lose another 10 to 15 lbs. This is a great forum and I'm glad to be here! |
