Exercising on DD?
I have a question...
Do you exercise on your DD's? I'm curious because 550 calories is pretty low and I can sometimes work out and burn 400-500 calories and was thinking that it will be hard to do that on DD's with such little calories consumed. Maybe on DD's I will do some light exercising or toning...thoughts? ![]() |

Here is a copy of page 156 of his book The Alternate Day Diet.
"Exercise: Intense or prolonged physical activity can affect your down day calorie requirement. For example:slow jogging for one mile(which takes most people 20 minutes) burns about 100 calories, allowing you to add 100 calories to your down day intake. Just be very aware that you need to be VERY honest with yourself about how many extra calories you are burning. Therefore if it takes you less than 20 minutes or you don't walk a full mile, don't even count it." I had written on another post that I read this, but was told no. He DOES say this so I would think you could go ahead and do your workout and add some more calories in without it hurting. Have a great workout and enjoy JUDDD.

I exercise on both DD's and UD's.
My exercise is either a gym session...45 mins cardio & 45 mins fixed weights..or an hour or so walking. I havent noticed any lack of stamina..but my tummy does start to rumble much sooner! I tend to eat something really filling..like a DD muffin, or something high protein before hand...and have a snack to eat straight after, cos I am usually really hungry by then. My exercise days are fixed, so as I dont want my DD's and UD's fixed too, I put up with it...its only every other week after all! My food counter...my fitness pal...takes off my exercise cals from my daily total..but I dont...I have never felt the need! I would say to give it a try once you have a few DD's under your belt...and your body is used to them! hugs Jo x

Many don't seem to advise exercise on DDs. I haven't noticed a great deal of trouble or difference between strength or stamina on either day. In fact, the fitness world is beginning to embrace exercising in the fasted state. I believe it has been strongly shown to make the body burn fat, to fuel its workout with it's own fat stores. Our own Shelly may be one here who has worked that principle (I think) so maybe she will pop in to comment.
And for myself, I absolutely would NOT consume extra calories to make up for any extra I had burned off through exercise! That's one of the main reasons I exercise in the first place. The last thing I want to do after burning off a bit of extra fat is eat extra calories in order to replace what I've just burned off!!!!! Or conversely, exercise more just so that I can eat more. Which I guess is the same thing, just from a different angle. But once again, we all get to do it how we choose to. My body. My weight loss attempt. My choice. So regardless of what is written for any of the plans, magazines, lay advice, etc. I exercise on either Up Days or Down Days, regardless of how my schedule is laid out, and I make sure I don't eat extra to fill my calorie depletion back up by the number of calories I just burned off. That's exactly the opposite of what I want to do. YMMV. You may find you wish to approach exercise and weight loss completely differently than I choose to do it. Best regards here. I'll be watching and applauding your great success on JUDDD, regardless of how you choose to do it for yourself. And you know, your progress really pretty much is the proof of whether you are doing a good job for yourself or not, so you'll be able to judge your progress anyway. Do it however you think you want to, and then see how it works for you.

I was only quoting a page from his book. Thought it might help for someone who did very strenuous exercise.

I think it's a good idea to think about what we want to do and how we want to manage our exercise and our foods too. We're the single best judges of our results. We're the ones right there catching that glimpse of ourselves in the bathroom mirror each morning. LOL ![]() |

I do some type of exercise everyday. When I'm having a heavy weight lifting day I don't do DDs but I can get in a jog in the morning and a walk at lunch and sometimes hit the gym after work to. I find my jog in the mornings after a DD can be a little tough but my jog after my UD is great. It doesn't really effect my hunger at all and I do not adjust my calories for the cals I burn. I also use ************ on my phone and there have been times I have been negative. Things that effect me more than exercise are TOM and if I don't bring enuf veggies to snack on at work, like today. I went over my cals today because I didn't bring enuf raw veggies and I have to snack at my job so I ended up grabbing some pork skins and some almonds. I won't make this mistake again. So medium day today...lol

I had my first DD coincide with my martial arts classes yesterday... It didn't work so well. I was dizzy and ended up over-eating... So, I'll have to maybe have a MD on Sundays so I can have UDs on Tues, Thurs and Sat.

Thanks all! Such a wonderful bunch here! I think I'm not only gonna lose some weight but make some friends! I took a 3 mile walk today and swam a little bit in the pool this afternoon---first DD today. I may do some light weights later. I should pick up some ostrich sticks at the gym too. Those are a great source of protein and only 70-80 calories a stick and something to munch on the way home so I'm not famished. I usually walk to and from to the gym (3 miles each way) unless I go from work which is right down the block...
