Quiet in here. . .<listens to crickets chirp>

Well, my last DD went well. I ended up at 335 calories for the day. My dinner ended up being a 1-cup serving of chocolate glu pudding with some FF whipped cream (canned) on top.

Tomorrow is going to be my next DD and I'm looking for some inspiration in here. I want to make some soup but not sure what to make. I'm not very good at just throwing things together without at least *some* kind of recipe to shoot from. I'd like to make something a little bit creamy, as I now have some gluc powder to work with. I was thinking maybe some kind of creamy veggie soup, but it has to end up pretty low-cal as I'm planning to have this on my DDs. Here's what I've got on hand. . .maybe you guys could help push me in a recipe direction:

a box of organic veggie stock (15 cal/cup. I'll use this as my base no matter what I make)
a can of tomato paste (30 cal for 2Tbls)
a can of mixed veggies (45 cal/half cup)
canned french cut green beans (20 cal/half cup)
canned spinach (25 cal/half cup)
frozen cauliflour (25 cal/cup)
fresh eggs (77 cal ea.)
yellow onion
minced fresh garlic
dried spices of various assortment, including my current fave: dried spinach/herb dip mix
gluc powder (obviously)
I also have a bag of tofu shiratake noodles to use up (40 cal/whole bag)

I also have a stick blender, magic bullet and full-size blender at my disposal, but I prefer to do as much as possible with the stick blender, due to its' ease of use and clean-up.

What do you recipe masters think?

Well, I did end up making soup today. . .kinda winged it and it turned out pretty good. Thought I'd share in case anyone else was looking for a little inspiration.

4 cups veggie stock, heated

To which I added:
2 tsp chicken boullion powder
1 cup steamed cauli, blended in with my stick blender
1/2 cup mixed veggies
1/2 cup fr. cut green beans
2 Tbls tomato paste
several good shakes of my spinach/herb mix
a few dashes of onion powder

In my bullet, I blended 1 1/2 cups cool water, 1 tsp chicken boullion powder, 1 tsp gluc powder. Then I added it to the warm soup, continually whisking to avoid *clumpage*.

Made close to 6 cups of soup, at 180 calories for the whole thing. I have packed up 1 cup to take to work with me tomorrow (for my DD), for about 30 calories. Tastes pretty much like vegetable soup. I like that when I stir it, the thickened soup (thank you, gluc powder) keeps the veggies suspended without letting them sink directly to the bottom of the bowl.

I've got my lunch already packed to go to work with me tomorrow for my DD:
soup (30 cal)
3 oz chicken (cooked with 2 Tbls Philly cooking cream and garlic) to which I'll add 2 chopped grape tomatoes once I've reheated the chicken (160 cal)
a SF jello cup (10 cal)
I also have 2 oz of almond milk packed in case I want a cup of diet hot chocolate in the afternoon (35 cal)

I'm gonna try almond milk in my coffee tomorrow morning to see if I can handle it (I'm very used to hwc and have been surviving my recent switch to half & half). This should make my coffee only 10 calories vs. 40 calories when I use half & half. I hope I like it or I'll be a grouch all morning at work suffering through coffee I no like.

Something else I made today for tomorrow's DD: chocolate pudding a la gluc powder:

Added together in my blender cup:
3/4 cup almond milk (unsweetened vanilla) (30 cal)
3/4 cup water
1 capful of butterscotch flavored DaVincis (could use any flavor, obviously)
4 drops EZSweetz
1 Tbls SF chocolate syrup (~10 cal)

Mixed together in a small bowl before adding to the liquid:
1 pkt diet hot cocoa mix (25 cal)
1 tsp gluc

Whirled in bullet blender and wah-lah! Very tasty (albeit slippery--kinda weird) chocolate pudding. This makes several servings--at least 2 or 3. I absolutey love this with a couple of Tbls of FF canned whipped cream on top! I know I got the idea to use the diet hot cocoa mix from one of the threads here (maybe the gluc recipe thread?) but wanted to share my recipe that worked.

Great recipes Andrea!!!

I made a simple Chocolate Gluc Pudding that was SOOO yummy and filling. I like simple, simple, simple too.

12 ounces water
1 TB unsweetened cocoa powder
stevia to taste
1 TB gluc

Whiz until super-thick in the VitaMix.

YUMMMM YUMMMM! It's a whole meal!

And only 20 calories and 3 carbs (from the cocoa powder).

RFL: Wow! You use 1 Tbls gluc in 12 oz of liquid. I used 1 tsp in twice as much liquid. Yours must be ultra thick! Mine is kinda light, almost like fluffy pudding, if you can imagine. I may have to experiment with a higher ratio of gluc to liquid in my next batch. . .

Yeah Andrea,

I was going to use less, but I was STARVING and I wanted a clean DD to combat the grains and dairy I had yesterday.

So, I know I could have and maybe should have used less, BUT it was so thick and rich and filling, hey, I'm glad I did it!! I have some left for a bedtime snack.

Andrea et al,

Can one OD on this gluc powder?

I mean I don't eat it everyday, but today I ate TWO big batches of Gluc pudding. I hope this stuff doesn't form into a ROCK in my intestines!

Seriously, anyone eat a LOT of this and live to tell?

LOL don't think it'll cement or anything, it's FIBER! if anything it'll help you move things along

had 2 up days in a row yesterday and today! i had worked straight through friday night into saturday and didn't sleep for 36 hours, and after that i had a big dinner (it was an up day) and today we went to a renaissance festival, did a lot of walking, so i had 2 subway salads and some subway meatballs, too. it may be considered a medium day, didn't count calories so i dunno. i also had a like two bites of bread today and some fried onion yesterday, oh no! lol but small amounts tomorrow a good dd to get me on track. i'm going to try that gluc chocolate pudding! might have to open a whole bunch of my tablets as i still have yet to get the bagged stuff! here's a pic of me and my kids, i'm wearing golden ram's horns and feathers on my head, so that looks funny. i made their cloaks for them, the first thing i made with my sewing machine!

I have from 1 to 3 teaspoons a day, and no cement innards here!

Edens, how fun--it looks like you and your family were having a great time.

I had two UDs in a row/ Yesterday was going to be a MD but a couple of adult beverages in the evening put the kibosh on that! Then today some friends and I went out to dinner to talk about our upcoming trip to Cancun. They wanted to go to the buffet at the casino. I tried to make good selections but am feeling a little bloated tonight--maybe some of that is from the drinks yesterday. I guess I'll find out when I weigh on Tuesday.

DD tomorrow - I'm going to have a chocolate muffin thing for breakfast, FF hot dogs on split bread for lunch, and a stir fry with miracle noodles, baby bok choy, daikon, napa, pea pods and glu thickened sauce for dinner, and maybe a hard boiled egg later in the evening.

Hi Y'all,
I stumbled upon this way of eating/dieting today and it sounds like something I could do! I went to Amazon and ordered the book (expedited), but want to get started in the meantime. I did ck out Dr. Johnson's website and read the part about the Induction. He said, "To help you control your calorie intake, only meal-replacement shakes (such as from Slim Fast®, Ensure®, Atkins®, Zone®, etc.) should be consumed on the seven Down Days during the induction phase." Would it be a total of 500 calories of one of these type shakes on the DD? Would anyone share what has worked for you regarding the shakes noted above? I appreciate your help and hope to be posting menus on the board soon!
Blessings,
Liz

Welcome, Liz!

I actually ignored the good Dr's advice about using the shakes and meal bars. I have had trouble with meal bars in the past (cravings, portion control issues, etc) and while I enjoy a protein shake now and then, I don't find them particularly satisfying. I didn't find it difficult at all to work out some "real food" meals that would keep me within the 500-calorie range to get started.

Having said that, if you like the meal bars and shakes, go for it! You can mix and match as you desire, up to a total of 500 calories.

Real Food Living on here uses a lot of shakes on her down days, and Leisa uses Atkins bars--we are all different!

Hi Liz and WELCOME!!!!

BTW, we have another JUDDD group here and we'd love to see you join us there as well.

http://www.lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/other-plans/711761-juddd-march-2011-a-14.html

As far as the pre-packaged bars and shakes, I don't use them. I personally don't care for artificial sweeteners and highly processed foods, but some people like them and do well on them.

For me, I like eggs.

OH! I also do use an egg white protein powder (nothing added) as a base for homemade shakes using stevia, unsweetened cocoa and cinnamon. I don't use it as much any more, but it sure helped on some DDs and I always saved for a bedtime "snack."

I hope this helps! Be sure to ask any questions or let us know if we can help you get started. I hope you LOVE JUDDD as much as I do!

O.K., here are some of my ideas for a DD: one Boca vegan patty (love those things), one Laughing Cow light cheese (35 calories), Ezekial bread (love it, but may have to do that cutting-bread-in-half thing someone suggested), cole slaw (cabbage with FF mayo--eat it all the time and love it!), cooked yellow squash, and maybe one Atkins bar. I'm not sure about that one...need to go to the store. I would love to have a Pink Lady apple (they are so sweet). Anyhoo, that's all I can think of right now. I am sure I will be starving this time tomorrow. I like the soup recipes y'all have, but won't have time to really cook until the weekend.
I have read about the Miracle Noodles. Is it true they have a nasty, fishy smell when you first open the package? I guess I am going to have to get my courage up and order some!
Blessings,
Liz

Hi Pugmama! I've never had the miracle noodles, but there are some on the way-should get here any day now. :P

On my DD's I try to eat a lot of my calories from fat and protein. I like eggs (egg beaters has less calories so you get more volume), beef hot dogs (1 has 180 calories, but if I eat it with a huge side of broccoli it helps keep me full), salmon (higher cal/fat, but not too bad) stir fried with bean sprouts and soy and teriyaki sauce), salad with grilled fajita chicken, salsa, and a small serving of guacamole (35-40 calories worth), and miso soup. I also do eat Atkins bars as they keep me full for a long time while satisfying my sweet tooth, and I keep my JUDDD low carb for the most part, because diabetes runs in my family and I'm trying to avoid foods that will effect my blood sugar. Last week I bought some glucomannan capsules and have been opening them and dumping them into my shakes to help thicken them, and yesterday I made 'pudding' with it. lol I think it was RealFoodLiving's recipe a page or two back.

Hi PugMama! Good luck on your first DD tomorrow! I'm doing a DD tomorrow, too, so you won't be alone! I love the splitting-a-piece-of-bread-in-half trick! So easy once it's toasted lightly. Keep checking in tomorrow if you feel like you need more support. We're here for you!!

I'm trying to get my DD planned out so I can pack up my lunch for work tomorrow. I'm thinking of doing:

B: coffee w/ either almond milk or half and half (10 or 40 cal)
L: 1 1/2 cups soup (see the last recipe I posted one page back - 45 cal), and either a small pouch of tuna with a little lite mayo, mixed in with some lettuce and 2 chopped grape tomatoes (115 cal) or 2 FF hotdogs with a split slice of bread (130 cal), a SF jello cup (10 cal)
S: diet hot cocoa w/ almond milk (35 cal)
D#1: either the hotdogs or tuna I didn't have for lunch
D#2: unsure. . .I still have 125 calories to play with here. Maybe another cup of soup, or some egg beaters cooked up with some chopped ham and another couple of grape tomatoes, or just a pudding cup. It depends on my mood and how well I stuck to the rest of the day's plan.

I wish I could do like you, RFL, and just have 4 eggs for the day and be done. Seems so much easier and less elaborate. I just feel like I need things to look forward to on my DDs so that I can tolerate them. Don't get me wrong, I love my DDs, but I have to have some variety. I don't want to burn out. . .especially when I love this plan the way that I do!

OK, fellow JUDDDers. . .who else is doing a DD tomorrow? Let's keep each other in mind tomorrow. I don't have anyone else IRL that's doing this plan to lean on, so I'm gonna support all my JUDDDies in here the best I can. If I feel like I'm having a bad DD, I'm going to think of someone else who's in the same boat as me tomorrow. So far I know it's me and PugMama. . .anyone else?

Andrea! Tomorrow's a DD for me, too! I am not sure yet what my meals will be. My shiratake noodles should arrive tomorrow (that's the estimated delivery date) so maybe dinner will include some noodles!!! I hope!

Other than that, for breakfast I think I might break open my carton of egg beaters I bought like a week ago and have an omelette with thin deli ham and a very small amount of cheese. Do those things last ok if unopened? I didn't even check the carton. lol I went shopping tonight! I bought some pre-cooked frozen philly beef steak (complete with veggies) that is 100 calories for 3 oz. That could be super yummy with a nice large portion of broccoli. Also got some 5 calorie cran grape juice (2 carbs!), a few different varieties of Atkins bars (there's a new almond coconut thing, omg!) and some 100 calorie packets of cocoa coated almonds, yum!

I enjoyed my up day! I had a pb choco smoothie for breakfast, french onion soup and salad for brunch at 10, then at 2 I had some fajita meat and broccoli, and after my workout I had an atkins endulge bar (the caramel chew bar that tastes JUST like snickers) and a slice of provolone cheese, and some 3 carb diet v8 splash!

edit: I decided to go enter everything into the calorie tracker at ********* and WOW. I had 46 net carbs today! lol I knew it was going to be high because of the soup and salad at Panera Bread. Without them, I would have been at 25 carbs! The soup was 10 and the salad was 7, and the dressing was 4! I thought they put the dressing on the side there, so I didn't ask to not include it. Dang! But that's ok, overall carbs only accounted for 16% of my caloric intake, which is pretty low! My fat was 64%! lol Protein 20%. But my calories came in at 1596. Do you long time JUDDDers think that's too high? The RDI on ********* for me is 2600 which I think is really high. The calculator on the JUDDD website says 2254 based on working out 1-3x a week.

O.K., Y'all! I am in the saddle so far! I have everything measured out and ready to go. The only thing is I forgot my water bottles. I may have to drink reg. water. I teach in a carpet mill town and have always been told NOT to drink the water as the water around here has been polluted with carpet dye poured in it (they say that even with purification this stuff is hard to get out). Who knows? Back on track now...it is so nice to come here and post...lots of good info and just to have the feeling of knowing you're not alone!

Eden, I see that you are counting carbs on your up day. I am trying to decide if I need to do that or just calories on my up day. I have lost wt. on Atkins before, but dread the thought of lowcarb. I know not all lowcarb is like Atkins...I did strict induction for almost 2 months a couple of years ago and ended up in the hospital. A story for another time...I have been leary of lowcarb since. My cardiologist says not to do that low of a carb diet again. I'm listening to what he says!
Everyone have a great day!
Blessings,
Liz

Liz, you should look into getting a water 'bobble'. I have one for me and my husband and my 2 kids! It's a water bottle with a built in filter! Got mine at Target.

As for low carb, I think everyone's bodies are different. I just know that for me, I experimented with eating 'whatever' on my UD on Saturday (I had some blooming onion and one bite of bread) and on my MD on Sunday (some meatballs out of a Subway meatball sub and 2 bites of bread) and it made me gain water. Esp. those blooming onions lol My fingers were so swollen! I'm still up .4 pounds as of Wednesday after all that! And I have been good since Monday (which was a DD) and even worked out yesterday, so for me personally, I need to stick with lower carbs. I can see how some people might not be good on low carb, but I don't see how a lot of sugar is good for anyone either. I would know, sugar and flour and grease are how I got so big! lol I have a love hate relationship with them. I loooooove how they taste but I hhhaaaaate how they make me look and feel after. LOL There's a relationship joke in there somewhere, I'm sure of it. :P Bleh, sorry for rambling.

In any case, great job on having everything measured out! I can't plan my stuff to save my life, I'm just not bothered. I make it up as I go along, but usually give it a little thought the day before. That's kind of like planning..with flexibility.

edit: Just made breakfast. Omelette with egg beaters (1/2 cup) and 6 slices of shaved deli ham and 2 tbs picante sauce. 115 calories and pretty filling! Drinkin' my water now!

Hi Liz,

People either LOVE 'em or HATE 'em! I LOVE 'em!
And yes, they are packaged in a liquid that has a fishy smell when you open the bag. I take a deep breath before I open the bag and then dump the contents into a waiting colander under water already running.

The smells comes off pretty well under some warm running water. I let them rinse a few minutes before proceeding and them it's great from there!!

If you go to the Recipe area, and search for Miracle Noodles, or Shirataki noodles, there are LOTS of good threads on these noodles, how to prepare them and how to eat them.

Here are a few:

DD for me today. I don't have a plan locked in stone but I have some choices available so I'll be okay whichever way I decide to go.

For breakfast this a.m., I had a radish muffin! This is based on Ouzoid's superlow cal muffin type thing in the LC recipe thread but changed up a little to accommodate what I had on hand. The whole muffin is only about 50 calories.

Ouizoid's Superlow Cal Muffin
DRY:
1/4 cup oat fiber
1 packet Alpine SF Apple Cider Mix
1 tsp glucomannan powder
1/2 tsp baking powder

WET:
1/3 cup egg white product (I used Aldi's)
3 tbs. Davinci's SF Cinnamon (Ouizoid used Caramel, which I didn't have)
2 tbs finely chopped daikon radish (Ouizoid used less, but I chopped up this much and figured I'd use it all. Next time I'll try grating it)
A couple drops of liquid Splenda (ouizoid used erythritol)

Blend dry together then add wet and mix well. (I do it all in a large Tweety Bird cappucino coffee mug) Pop into microwave for 1 minute for a sorta "cookie dough" texture, or a bit longer if you want a more muffin-y texture. It rises up to fill about 2/3 of the mug. I eat it right out of the mug. I was really surprised at how good the radish was in this - didn't taste like a radish at all and added a really nice apple feeling to the muffin. You could give it a squirt of FF whipped cream or as Ouizoid does, mix some FF cream cheese with Davinci's for a "frosting" - I liked it just as it was, and it is really, really filling. I'm going to have another one tonight to stave off my late-night eating monster.

Not sure when I'll be hungry for lunch--this is still keeping me full!

I have on hand, a lovely low-cal veggie noodle soup, and also some roast chicken and steamed brocolli and cauliflower - not sure yet which I'll have for dinner. Eithe way, I'm gonna save 50 calories for a radish muffin again tonight!

Mornin" JUDDD'ers! I'm doin' a drive by...got to get ready for work.

Today is a down day for me too! I had southwestern egg beaters for Breakfast, lunch will be after work~M-Noodles, glu teriyaki sauce and broccoli slaw, Dinner will be chicken breast and salad or maybe green beans? I had a bad stomach ache yesterday, too many carbs I think. I'll be on the straight and narrow for awhile.

HI Y'ALL!!

Today I'm REALLY shooting for a DD, but it may end up as a MD since I'll be away from home. (Better to be a MD, than a UD or Up Up and AWAY day!).

So far, I've had

Cooked chicken breast 4 oz
Raw cabbage 4 cups
Homemade defatted chicken broth 1/4 cup
I'll have 2 HB eggs, one for supper, one for bedtime snack.

That's how I want to roll today, I'm praying it works!

Have a great day everyone!!!

Well, y'all,

For accountability, this going to be a MD afterall!

I haven't even left the house yet and I'm starving.

Soooo, a couple of hard-boiled eggs and some sauteed cabbage later, I'm in good shape, but definitely an MD. (not an UD)

DD tomorrow, I'll enjoy the MD today. Wonder if the cabbage is making me hungry??

Ahhh well, gotta listen to the body, right? RIGHT! I'm in this for the LONG HAUL not a quick fix, so that's why JUDDD is working so well for me!

Hiya Ladies!

I've really enjoyed reading this afternoon posts! Rather than address everyone individually, I'll jsut give and opinion or two on some of the questions, okay?

RE: JUDDD and low carb or calories. Whatever works best for your body. I find that eating ultra low carb on DD's keeps me fuller, longer and keeps me honest on my UD's so I won't have what RFL calls "an up up and away day". If you like eating low carb then go for it otherwise count your calories. The main thing is to try to eat healthfully.

I don't think 1596 calories on an UD is at all high. I think it's a very reasonable number.

Everyones DD menus sound really good. It's amazing how versatile 500 or less calories can be! My DD is going very well. So far I've only eaten 60 calories of egg beaters, proving that DD's are much easier for me when I'm working and not at home. Since it's already 4:00, I'm just gonna wait and have my chicken breast on a bed of romaine for dinner. DH is getting taquitos on a bed of romaine. He doesn't mind having a "main dish" salad with me on my DD. I'm lucky, he's very supportive! If my appetite flares up, I still have miracle noodles prepared, if I must eat later.

Today at Henry's market I bought more tofu-shiritaki, and I found the sugar free HONEY Bear! That's exciting, I don't have to special order through the mail. A few low carb recipes call for this type of sweetening. I also bought a small container of pure stevia. Apparently this tiny little bottle has 905 servings! There were two ladies (An employee of Henry's and a shopper)there in the aisle that both use it and convinced me to give it a try....any one here use stevia? I mostly use splenda but I thought it might be good to mix it up a little.

Annie that's a good lookin' picture of food you got there.

Liz, sounds like you did great! How did you feel throughout the day?

Today I had:

B: omelette with 1/2 c egg beaters and 6 slices shaved ham
L: atkins almond coconut bar
D: shiratake noodles with kung pao sauce and mushrooms, and 2 cups of diet v8 splash. total calories: 399! I might have a snack after the gym if I feel hungry or light headed.

So, I like the shiratake noodles, thanks for posting those links! I rinsed well and just cooked in a hot pan until they were pretty 'dry' and added the kung pao sauce and mushrooms Yummy! I'll probably have some again tomorrow lol But I only ordered 3 packs (diff brands) to try, so I can find a favorite. :P I will Definitely have to order more!!!

I felt good yesterday---hungry, but good! I did not workout at the gym yesterday as I want to let my body get used to the DD. I am back in the saddle today, though! Last night, I rushed through preparing DH's lunch and supper. He wanted gravy and biscuits...any other time I would be tasting that gravy and eating 2 biscuits.

I have this powdered peanut butter called PB2. I think it has 45 cal. for 2 T. and 1.5 grams of fat. Seems like it was 5.0 grams of carbs. I recently discovered this on a blog I subscribe to...it is pretty good. It says peanuts, salt, and the dreaded sugar as ingredients! I got it at a local Thrive store (one of my best friends is doing Thrive).

O.K., it looks as if I am going to have to get some of those noodles ordered this weekend!
Eden, where did you find the Atkin's almond coconut bar? I went to Kroger's and they didn't have Atkin's bars there (that I could find). I read online that they are fairly new.

I had one T. of apricot-pineapple jelly this a.m. and now wish I hadn't. I am more hungry than usual...why do I do that to myself?! Sugar=BAD.

Eden: Hubby and I honeymooned in San Antonio years ago! Nice place!

Blessings,
Liz
