Misty disa-Is the concert one of your heroes-or just a fun thing.
Will you be so concerned about the cruise that you wouldn't enjoy the concert, anyway, (I could be like that), maybe you should give the tickets to someone else. |

Good morning everyone
This is DD for me and I bought some shiritaki (sp)? noodles yesterday that I will be having for lunch. with only 20 calories a serving that will work for me. I used others advice when they said their better in asian recipes and I bought some chilli sauce and tried it yesterday. Well I like it a lot so maybe this will be helpful to someone else. Finished my UD yesterday with around 2000 cal. Everyone have a good day. |

Misty-
I can identify with both responses you received. You can go and enjoy yourself because we can get sick anyplace, any time. You can't control that, and I've been to the theatre a number of times without getting sick. However, I also think like Nitenurse (she must know me) because if I were concerned about getting sick (as you seem to be) I'd be too worried to enjoy myself. So it's up to you to decide. We've been on 7 cruises so far (me, my sister, and teenage niece), and no one has been sick because I think we want to go so badly that we ward off all germs unconsciously:-) Did I mention that we love cruising (It's too late now, but in the future, I'd strongly suggest the insurance. I always invest in it because it would be bad enough to miss the cruise but to lose money as well would be dreadful:-) Nitenurse- I think I mentioned that I first heard about anti-inflammatory diet from Protein Power, and I've since learned more. I was on NSAIDs for almost 30 years and I haven't taken one in about 5 years now thanks to diet and exercise. The biggest improvement has been recent when I cut out all grains and dairy. I think I had sensitivities that I barely noticed because I ate so little of both, but with them out of my WOE, I feel hardly a twinge from what is severe arthritis. Neither is mentioned as being 'inflammatory,' but if we eat things that we are 'sensitive' to, our body reacts. I mentioned somewhere that my CRP was .9 (with 1.0 being the low end of the lab range), and that's with severe arthritis which is amazing because usually something systematic like that would get someone into at least mid-range. I credit it to anti-inflammatory eating. Sherrie- Sorry that I didn't see your post before you left, but you CAN do a MD tomorrow. Just think of it as an "enhanced DD." I find that if I think of subtracting from UD, I wind up feeling deprived, and it turns into an UD. But if I think of my 'base' as DD and think about what I can add [my MD is about 1,000 cal], I'm much more satisfied and successful. |

Hi!
![]() I have been reading this thread with interest and visited the Dr's website. Yesterday I had my first DD. I had 695 calories, which I know is higher than you are supposed to start with, but I was only 1-2 lbs away from my goal weight. I was 107 yesterday morning. Today I am 105... below goal! I am excited but I know it's probably water weight, although I drank plenty of liquid yesterday. I'm so excited because my tummy is pretty much flat!!!! I am going to get the book ASAP. I think this is a great plan to maintain on. I was pretty hungry during the day, but I spread my food out so I was eating a little bit every couple hours. when I got home, I opened an Atkins shake and had about 1/3 of it in a glass of ice, then did a moderate 30 min treadmill walk. I sipped on the rest of the shake throughout the evening and had no hunger pangs until I went to bed. Also, my toe was cramping when I was trying to get to sleep. I had to get up twice to stretch/walk around and drink some water. Finally I fell asleep and woke up just before the alarm. Today is my UD and I have had a small protein shake, a scrambled egg and 2 pcs bacon. I usually log all the food i eat, along with the calories and carbs, but I'm going to try to just eat enough to satisfy my hunger and have a small treat (keeping carbs relatively low). According to the website, I'm supposed to eat 1900 calories on the up day. That's my story so far! I am happy to be here, and if any of the experienced people have advice for me, I'd like to hear it! Thanks, Salamander |

Wow SalamandarGreat job on your first DD with those results. I love this woe, and can't wait to get to maintenance.
Leo41That was some great adice. nitenurseI too have been to other plans, although it seems this one is the only one that keeps me motivated to stay on it, and although the weight loss is slow now I'm losing inches and I'll gladly take that Thanks for the welcome you guys I'll check in later |

![]() I don't know what to say as far as advice... I guess I'd say to really go for the 500 cal DDs for an entire two week "induction" as per Dr. J this will activate your SIRT1 Gene and all of its benefits. Right after that I'd start increasing my DD calories to 25% for few DDs then to 30% etc. etc. until you find your good maintenence DD cals. I believe they can be up to about half of your UDs so your maintenence could look like UD 1900 DD 950 |

Misty - I would definately go to the concert if it's an artist you really like. Just avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth and wash your hands a lot after (and during if you can). Just with regular soap and water (you don't need the Purell-type stuff). Have fun!

Salamander-
![]() To follow up on Kisha's excellent advice, the purpose of doing 2 weeks of 500 cal. DDs is to activate a gene that is supposed to have long-term health benefits. Since you're at goal now, if you find yourself losing weight on 500 cal DDs, just increase your calories on UDs so that you're not losing--it's only for two weeks. When you get the book, you'll see that all this is explained. What isn't too clear is that the UD number is relatively meaningless. It's an arbitrary calculation, and Dr. J admits that people can eat a variety of calories on UDs, depending on their situation. For example, because I have a compromised metabolism, I need to eat much less than the calculator number on my UDs in order to lose. Since you are in maintenance mode, you should adjust so that you don't lose. After 2 weeks, you can raise your DD calories by figuring out the number of calories you need to maintain on a daily basis, and dividing that into 2 days, with the DD at perhaps 35% of the UD. But by that time, you'll have the book, and I'm sure there's a better explanation of all this there. Many of us intend to maintain on JUDDD when we get to goal because it is very easy to live with. |

Leo and Kisha, thank you for the advice! I think I can do 500 calories- I just wasn't prepared with a good menu, so I winged it. Could you give me some easy ideas? I know about protein shakes/bars, and I am going to make some soup with chicken stock, cabbage, other low cal veggies... yesterday I had a scrambled egg wrapped in a LC tortilla for breakfast and chicken with diced tomato and artichoke at lunch. Snack was 1/2 c broccoli slaw and 1/2 small apple, and dinner was the Atkins shake. Typing this out, it doesn't seem like much food so I need to figure out "volume" eating to get me through those days.

Hi everyone. I just joined and am starting JUDDDD today. I have over 50 pounds to lose and am hoping that JUDDDD will be the diet that finally does it for me. If the claims that Dr. Johnson makes in his book are true, then it seems like a healthy lifestyle change.
I like the idea of combining JUDDDD with a lower carb diet. I plan to go easy on the sugar and starches at least until I can switch to maintenance. I'm glad I found this web site and this discussion. It will be nice to have company along the way. ![]() Now, to figure out how this place works. |

Laughing Cow Light Cheese (35 cals per wedge) I like to spread this on the GG Scandanavian Bran Crisp Breads sold right here by Netrition (12 cals each) Pure Protein Canned Shake Trader Joe's (110 Cals 5 Carbs) Unsweetened Almond Breeze (40 cals per 8 oz) They make vanilla and chocolate I also use Almond Breeze in my coffee on DD Single Serving Fage Greek Yogurt (90 cals) 97% Fat Free Hebrew National Hot Dog (45 cals each) Ostrim Sticks (60 cals for two) Subway Oven Roasted Chicken Salad (130 cals dressing extra) Subway Roast Beef Salad (140 cals dressing extra) Sugar Free Popsicle (15-20 cals by brand) Swiss Miss DIET Cocoa (not just no sugar must say DIET) (25 cals) Trader Joe's BBQ Chicken Terryaki - DO NOT use the sauce Packet (150 cals per cup) Trader Joe's Egg White Salad (100 cals) Trader Joe's Turkey Meatballs (100 cals per two) I "bulk" these items out with Big Leafy Green salads using lowest cal lowest carb dressing I can find (there is one at TJs thats 35cals per 2TBS that tastes good mixed with balsamic) and also frozen cooked string beans to add bulk. Another favorite of mine is to use 1-1.5 cups of cooked veg either brocc or green beans and make a "scramble" with 2 eggs and 2 TBS hard green can parm. Its especially good with a couple squirts of chili sauce on it. Even my roomate said how good my "dinner" smelled LOL. yeah veggie egg scramble... I'm a BIG ONE for the easy already cooked meal so hopefully some better cooks than I will have ideas for more whole foods type DD meals. Quote:

Salamander, Fab at 60 and welcome back Caramel!Salamander, I am in maintenance and I started JUDDD last November with only a few pounds to lose (I was looking for a woe forever vs. a diet). I did the initial 2 weeks of 500 cal DD's alternating with eating to satisfaction on UD's so I would activate the SIRT1. My DD's are now 50% as per the calculator on Dr. J's site. Maintenance is great and DD's can feel like a feast compared to the 500 cals I used to consume! Good luck! Hi to e/e! |

Salamander-
Kisha's suggestions are much better than mine, but here's what I do (most of the time) for DDs. I don't focus on volume so much as protein to curb my appetite. I eat about 3x a day. For breakfast, it's usually an eggwhite 'omelet' with a little spinach or broccoli. I either make it in the microwave or fry it in Pam spray (c.100 cal). I'll later have sardines (130 cal) or a piece of fish (150 cal) [I buy it frozen, so I know the calorie content--I never consume anything on DDs unless I know exactly how many calories are involved.]. Today I had my fish [Mahi Mahi - 150 cal] with a bag of chopped spinach doused in hot sauce (100 cal), so I came in at about 350 for the day. I am for 300-400 on my DDs. Normally, I would have divided the fish and spinach into two meals on a DD, but today I was out most of the day and didn't eat until early evening, so I had it all at once (it felt like an UD meal!). I've found pouches of wild salmon in my supermarket that are only 70 cal., and I use them on DDs frequently. That, sardines and tuna are my basic protein sources for DDs. Your idea of soup is a good one and whenever I have a chicken, I make a batch of broth to have on DDs--very filling. It sounds dreadful, but I find that adding some vinegar and hot sauce to the broth makes it really filling (and tastes a little like hot and sour soup). I also drink hot, green tea all day long (at least 3-4 cups) and that really helps with hunger. Dill pickles are great for hunger (just 10cal for a big one), but I don't like all that sodium, so I slice cucumbers into diluted pickle juice and always have some ready if I get too hungry. |

salamander, fat at 60 and caramel!!Leo, I loved your idea of looking at a MD as an expanded DD rather than paring down an UD....anything that works!! Had a good DD today (483 calories) and trying for a MD tomorrow. Kisha...yes, that's what I had planned too. Today, Saturday as DD, tomorrow as MD and Friday and Sunday UD's. I think it will work. Well, hungry again at the end of a DD so heading to bed early. |

I started reading the book today and it's making me wonder about intermittent fasting. I'm really curious about how many of you have tried fasting instead of DDs. If you haven't tried it, why not. If you did, what do you like about DDs better than fasting?
I read a blog by a woman who did much better fasting then with adding a little protein. I'm also finding I get food obsessed on DDs. I'm wondering if a fast would be easier since there are no choices to make. I'm still questioning things and wondering what your experiences have been. |

Beezle ~ I have attempted a water fast a few times on DDs. Most of the time, I save all my calories until suppertime anyway, so I have thought if I can make it until 5 or 6 without eating, maybe I can make it all day. However, I've never been able to do it. I get too hungry or I get a headache and have to eat something in order to take my headache meds. I'm going to keep trying, though, and I'm sure one day I'll be able to do it.
To answer your question as to why people choose DDs over fasting days, in my opinion, it's because those 500 calories on DDs go a long way to help satiate you whereas fasting is so very difficult. Thanks to everyone who responded about my concert "dilemma." I'm still not sure what to do, lol. On one hand, I agree that life's too short, and yes, I was really looking forward to these concerts. One is REO Speedwagon and the other is Jason Aldean. On the other hand, I can see where Leo and Nitenurse are coming from and I wonder if I'm going to be so anxious that I don't fully enjoy myself anyway.... I'll keep pondering and hopefully decide soon! |

Morning, everyone. (yawn) I ended up accidentally having two DD's in a row. So I'm trying to have an UD today.
On Tuesday, I had about a 350 calorie day. I couldn't sleep that night. So, Wednesday morning at 3:00 in the morning was still wide awake. I got up and ate something (a little leftover pork and some cheese.) Then, I finally went to sleep sometime before 5. Had to get up about 7 cause my little was awake. Then I had a nauseous headache all day, so I didn't eat anything. Tried to eat for supper, but ended up getting nauseous again. I was hungry last night when I went to bed, but too tired to get up and eat anything. Now it's 8 something in the morning and I'm trying to decide if i feel like eating or not. I am supposed to go have lunch with my aunt today. Maybe I'll just try some coffee first. |

Misty-
Unless you're as neurotic as I am, you should be OK at the concerts. I tend to worry about everything, even though I know from experience that 95% of what I worry about never happens. If I were in your position, I'd worry so much about getting sick that I'd make myself sick ![]() Beezle- As you read the book, you'll see that Dr. J says that a total fast is ideal, BUT most people could not manage that long-term, and his research shows that 500 cal or less works just as well from a physiological perspective--i.e., provides the same benefits as fasting. I actually fasted twice because I just wasn't hungry on a particular DD, and I found that I ate much more on the following UD, so that there really was no saving of calories overall. I didn't intend to fast; I just decided to wait until I was hungry, and those two days (in 9 months!), I never got hungry. Most of the time, I'm hungry on DDs, and I struggle just to limit my calories. If I had to anticipate fasting every other day, I'm sure I would not be able to do this plan. The idea is to follow a plan that you can live with long term. Cassandra- I wouldn't worry about the DDs if you're sick. I find that my body operates differently when I'm sick anyway. Focus on eating however much you feel inclined to eat and making sure you stay sufficiently hydrated. Deal with the plan when you're well. |

Misty, I vote go to the concerts and wash your hands and follow the regular precautions. You are probably no more likely to get sick there than the grocery store (Ever think about how many people touch the handles of the carts? Yipes!).
Beezle, I fasted a couple of times (We call them AWFs- Almost Water Fasts) and though it was empowering when I did it, I don't know if I saw enough (or any) extra weight loss to make it worthwhile. I had an uneventful DD yesterday. I was at a conference during the day and lunch was provided. I ate the insides out of a half a sandwich- a couple of ounces of turkey lunchmeat, a few shreds of cheese and some lettuce. I left as much mayo as I could. My guess is 250 cals. I had some smoked flavor tuna in the late afternoon and an apple in the evening. About 600 cals by my best count. I'm calling it a success. My official weigh-in is Saturday, but I don't think I'm going to make any journeys into VFT. My own fault really, last week was NOT stellar. I'll be pretty happy to be back to normal. Funny thing is, I have some pants that are a little looser and my stomach looks flatter. Maybe I'm shifting. I've noticed on my last couple of DDs that the thing I am craving most of all is FAT. My DD evening fantasy last night was a big tuna salad with mayo, cheese and avocado. Guess what's for lunch? Have a great day everyone!

Beezle-
I can understand your frustraton! I try NOT to cook on DDs at all. My protein is usually fish of some kind, but if it's more than opening a can (sardines, tuna), it's already prepared and in the fridge. I eat 2-3X during the day, but all the food is prepared in advance and just has to be microwaved or it's something to eat cold. (I might 'fry' my morning omelet, but that takes only a couple of minutes.) Part of this is to monitor my calories (just too easy to nibble on something while I'm cooking), but it's mainly to avoid cooking odors that will sharpen my appetite, and also avoid your experience of doing a lot of work for so few calories and thus feeling 'deprived.' Since the BF wants you to lose weight, let him fend for himself on DDs--pizza delivery, e.g. ![]() |

Hey everyone...
Still sick, but I don't think it's serious. I don't have a fever, no pain, my throat doesn't hurt. I only have productive coughs, but I have a lot of phlegm. Mostly I am exhausted, partly, I am sure, because I have been too congested to use my CPAP for almost a week now. In bed almost all day yesterday and today. Just wanted to let you know I didn't die. 450 cals yesterday, 1000 so far today....I am going to try to eat more. Doc visit is on Tuesday.... --bill |
