I agree with you, Leo, since I am a highmileage dieter, too (age 70). I eat lowcarb because I feel better, and once in awhile I choose to eat carbs knowing full well I'll feel rotten for a day.
I am thankful I can still eat most vegetables, and butter and cream, and meat etc on my UDs; and I am using a lowcarb bread, kind of experimenting with that to see if I can get away with it. It is a lot better for me to be able to say that I feel better when I don't eat those carby things, than to feel deprived, too. Apparently my brain is listening, if noone else cares.lol. I think we all find our way to what is comfortable, took a lot of hits and misses for me. I plan on using JUDDD the rest of my life, too, for health reasons. Hopefully I will get back to some pain relief with it in a few weeks. Thanks for the info Leo, you always reinforce my truth. Again welcome Stevie, hope you like it here. Sherrie- Weekends are totally my downfall too. I had two updays this weekend and am really feeling bloated and crappy. For me it isn't having bad food around the house, but between an oktoberfest party with incredible food Sat. and my book club dinner last night, which was crazy decadent (southern food themed because of the book), I ate over 4000 cal in two days. I did only eat a light lunch yesterday in anticipation of the big meal, but I just wish I could have passed up more last night.
Scared to weigh tomorrow. StevieRenee- so glad to see you here. If you read the book, you will see that for up days, he does recommend a "healthy" diet, but his notion of that is lower fat and higher carb than many of us low carb advocates would like. As you can see by some of our posts (me, sherrie, etc.) the problem is that the lack of restrictions on our up days often leads to overindulgence in foods that are not healthy and that trigger more eating. I told myself when I went back to JUDDD from the 6wkcure that I would avoid sugar, and bad carbs but I have already broken that vow and I am annoyed with myself. Juddd works, but you have to use common sense and eat well. |

Oh, Misty....we sound so much alike! I can't have tempting foods around at all either and especially desserts! I did send leftovers home with several people at the party but my husband is a sweets eater too (without the weight problem I have) and wanted a piece or two to take home. The thing is...he can have a piece/day of something, while I'm of the mindset "let's finish this off so I can get back on plan". It's a learning process, I guess. ![]() |

I too know the bad carbs are poison for me. I often wonder what it's going to take for me to put my health above instant gratification, or as Dr. Phil puts it....having a party in my mouth. I have the best intentions but then seem to cave 50% of the time. I have been yo yo dieting since age 11 (52 years now) and I think a lot of it is psychological. I truly have gained most of my weight getting ready to start the next "diet". That's why this WOE appeals to me so...it is a lifestyle I feel I can live with because I don't feel deprived. But it's so hard to break that habit of thinking of food as either being "bad" or "good". I think I said in another post that I find it difficult to have a small portion of something and leave the rest for another day. It is "deprivation" thinking...so many times I've thought "I'll never be able to have this again". It's gonna take me a while to get my mind around the idea that nothing is off limits. I like the idea of "eating healthy 80% of the time". I'll get the hang of this eventually, but please don't stop letting us know what is working for you. I envy your patience and consistency...maybe that will come in time for me too. I'm NEVER giving up!!

Sherrie-
I can NEVER have a 'small portion' of anything, much less desserts, etc. Fortunately, I live alone and can fairly well manage what I have in the house. I had to stop doing serious cooking some time ago because of my arthritis, so if I entertain, I tend to invite people to a restaurant. But a few weeks ago, I had some friends over on a Sunday afternoon and served cake and ice cream. I had eaten most of the leftover cake before I came to my senses and dumped the ice cream down the sink. When my family visits, I simply pack up all the leftovers for them to take away. It's really awful to be this way, but if there's something in the house that is delicious but bad for me, it just seems to call my name. So you're not alone. We all just need to find a way to cope. Stevie- If you're interested in Primal, you might take a look at Mark's website, which has most of the basic information--Mark's Daily Apple (if you leave out the apostrophe and run the words together, you only need to add a dot com. I haven't looked at the book yet myself, and I don't know if I will, since I think I got all the principles from the website, and I don't need the science behind it because I know that from other sources. I don't really believe totally in the "eating like our ancestors" thing because I think we've evolved since then, but I do like eating as simply as possible. And so many different people advocate eliminating all grains that I think that's a good choice for me. |

I'm Back!
My class... I was there Thursday, Friday, Saturday. I'm a Commercial Insurance Broker and regularly pursue insurance professional designations. We have to take a certain number of continuing ed hours each year to maintain our license. Some people choose to sit in a class and just collect the credited hours. I prefer to take the harder classes that include a test. I already have my CISR (Certified Insurance Service Representative) designation. And am now pursuing my CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor). The classes for it are twenty hours (2.5 days) and then a two hour written test. The test is hard! There is TONS of information.
The class I just took was on Life and Health (Including disability insurance, long term care insurance, annuties, and retirement planning). Since I normally sell property and casualty insurance this was most definately NOT my area of experties. Luckilly they know that most of us are P&C people and I found this particular test easier than they usually are. Lets put it this way... I think I passed and usually I couldn't tell ya LOL. So anyways, its a big time suck comittment for the days you're there since you need to study the ENTIRE TIME you're not in class. Thus my decision to stay at my grandma's since my current employer didn't offer to put me up in the course hotel. My grandma lives about twenty minutes from the class as opposed to the 1.5 hours it would've taken from my house (morning commute traffic). My granmda is SO CUTE! She is 95 and I'll admit that now she really is a little old lady. She's tiny and somewhat frail. She has always been completely independent and a real firecracker. I see now that she is definately getting up there... she's still sharp as a tack but we really need to cherish the time we have! I don't know how but I somehow escaped the food pushing. I was just absolutely insistent that she NOT FEED ME ANYTHING. I brought my DD groceries and both scheduled DDs were fine. Unfortunately Sunday was CRAZY. I was THIS CLOSE to an all out carbocide food binge. I managed to hold it in on the carbs but intook thousands of calories. *sigh* back on DD today. WOAH I just wrote an entire novel! sorry just skip over my ramblings LOL. I'm not going to weigh til saturday after M, Wed, Fri DDs. I missed you guys! I didn't respond to all the posts because I think just about everything got addressed later on... |

So your schedule should be: UD DD UD DD UD DD UD etc... I see that you are still doing three DD in a row? Please this is not JUDD so you are cheating yourself out of the advantage of alternation. There are ways to tweak the days to fit your lifestyle but it is to never be two consecutive Down Days. So please I hope you have already altered your schedule to have an Up Day between your Down Days? |

I am SO READY for a DD
Ya'll -
Finally, the 5 weeks of family activities/parties/impossible situations are OVER. After weeks and weeks of 2-3 UD in a row I can finally go back to true alteration. I have not been pigging out, but I am really, really tired of eating 3 meals a day. (In case you hadn't guessed, I made today an UD after my MD of yesterday b/c it seemed too difficult not to with the in-laws in town). The crazy thing is that although I've not been doing real alteration I have been steadily, sloooooowly trending downward. So hopefully after two weeks of UD/DD action I'll get below 170 into VFT. ![]() A

I had my first 500 cal day (505 to be exact)! I had my usual salmon and egg for breakfast, 1/2 chicken breast for lunch, and 1/2 chicken breast with riced cauliflower and spices for dinner. This was the first time I'd tried riced cauliflower. This stuff is unflipping believable! I didn't actually believe that it could be a real substitute for rice so I never made it. But for 130 calories I had a nice hot bowl of chicken and "rice." I felt like I was eating comfort food. I wasn't even planning it. I was grating the cauliflower for tomorrow's low carb pizza and decided to make a little extra to go with dinner. Omg, I'm going to have to try it with cheese and broccoli next time.
You guys were right. I could do it, and it wasn't even hard. I got a little hungry before meals but nothing major. The BF even got a pizza for his dinner. It was the first time ever that I haven't taken a slice or at least had the toppings off a few. Also did 30min of power yoga. |

Chicken broth, red zinger, turkey, cream cheese, pickles, green beans, 1/4 of a small apple. Sugar-Free Robitussin. 470 cals.
The bad news, the apple was an experiment. I haven't eaten an apple or any part of one in 4-5 months, until today. It spiked my BG 22 points in less than an hour. We're talking 6 carbs. I will have to severely cut back on the carbs because my insulin resistance is so severe. Congrats, everyone on great DDs (I knew you could do it, Beezle! Now you know you can too We can do hard things. --bill

I'm closing in on the end of a good DD too. I had Progresso lite soup, a tiny little apple, some turkey lunch meat and sf Jello. I have a big mug of sugar cookie tea and I'll go to bed early.
It feels good to have mastered a DD. It was hard, but I can do hard things. ![]() |

At 42 calories a cup, I think it is a calorie bargain and I really feel like I am having pasta.
All I do is cut it in half (the hardest part), salt it and spray with Tj's olive oil spray, roast it flesh side down for an hour. |

Sounds like yesterday was a good DD for everyone!! Proud of you, Beezle....now enjoy your UD.
Good news...yesterday's DD got rid of 3.5 of the 5lb I gained over the weekend! Now a reasonable UD today....eat to satisfaction (but don't go wild). I forgot who said it, but it's true...I dream all day on DD's what I'm gonna have on my UD and then wake up and not even hungry. How do you go to bed starving and wake up not hungry? This body of mine is even weirder than I thought it was. ![]() Last edited by onceNforall; 10-20-2009 at 04:32 AM.. |

I guess we all had a good DD yesterday. I made a discovery, and I know it's going to sound gross, but it was actually good. I eat a lot of fish, and I will break up a fillet (salmon or cod or tuna), mix it with chopped celery and mayo (homemade), but on a DD, I can't waste calories on that mayo.
Yesterday, I used a mixture of mustard and horseradish--and it was great! The protein in the fish helped keep the hunger at bay, although I had a large cucumber at supper time with more fish because I was ravenous again. But I came in at just about 400 cal. Awful experience this morning. I had to go for a fasting blood draw, and the office is a 40 min. drive for me. Without my coffee and after a DD! I am always miserable without my morning coffee, and what made it worse is that the tech told me that I COULD have my coffee since I drink it black! I've been having my blood drawn for the past 2 years (every 4 months) and I never knew that! All that suffering, and I could have been drinking coffee! Bill- I don't think it was the 6 carbs because according to Dr. Bernstein, it takes >10 carbs per meal to invoke an insulin response. Perhaps it was the type of carb because I know that fruit can be a real problem. I love apples but don't dare eat them because of the fructose. Dr. Bernstein warns against all kinds of fruit, except occasional berries if a person absolutely has to have some. Last edited by Leo41; 10-20-2009 at 07:36 AM.. |

weighed in today...................153!! I have no idea what is going on with my body. I am back to only 1 lb below when I started the 6wk cure (that I only did for 4 weeks).
Really depressing. I am happy to be doing JUDDD again, but want to be losing, not gaining. Clearly, even though my down days have been good, the big ups are wreaking havoc on my plan. Did anyone here who has gone from strict low-carbing to a moderate carb juddd plan, experience weight gain at the beginning? |

Snaggle, my scale wt has been a little strange since the 6 week cure. I lost inches, but still not back to where I was in August on JUDDD.(September was totally messed up with the family reunion/wedding lots of company) I am still 2# over my sig low. But I feel that my body is adjusting and that the wt loss will start next week-It always seems to take my body a couple weeks to be assured that I am not trying to kill it with some freaky food plan. Karma for yo-yo dieting.
Maybe it's because the SIRT miight keep us from regaining on UDs.-but strangely enough Yesterday I had an UD-didn't eat till about 2pm, about 8pm I realized I was going into another DD pretty empty, so I ate again even if it was pretty late.Still low carb but higher fat than DDs. Today my weight is down, not up. Go figure. I have a handheld machine that measures body fat electronically, and my pounds of body fat are going down slowly even when the scale weight is going up and down like that. |

I'm having a DD today. I don't post much on UD because it is pretty boring. LOL I'm getting to where I don't want to stuff myself any more on up days. I eat normally. Then, I drink a high fat smoothie around ten o'clock at night. So I am getting some extra in on the up days.
I am waiting for it to warm up this morning so I can take my little to the library. He is six now and can get his own card. Then we are going to stop by the grocery store. I need to pick up a couple of down day items. When I bought groceries last time, I didn't plan for the little being out of school this week. So I don't have much lunch food or snacks for him. He likes to eat a lot. |
