Hey Misty,

Here are some of my recipes for DD.

Egg and Veggie Salad
-1 hardboiled egg plus the white of two hardboiled eggs (whole egg is 75 calories and 2 egg whites are 34 calories=104 calories)
-Broc, cauliflower, tomato, onion or what ever veggies you have at home cut into small pieces (calories depends on what you put in, I usually put in about 50 calories)
-tablespoon of mayo or dressing (check your labels, but usually around 50 calories in mine) TOTAL CALORIES=204

Mashed Cauliflower (tastes like mashed potatoes! YUM!) 30 calories
add chix. buillion for a little flavor
Smoked salmon-56 grams is about 66 calories
Total calories is just under 100!!

Grilled Tuna from can and salad
-I cook 1/2 can tuna in a pan with Tandoori seasoning (95 calories)
-lettuce, peppers, tomato, arrugula, spinach 40 calories
-dressing 50 calories

total calories 195

I have learned that if I want to have a successful DD, the most important things for me are to
1) hold off on my first meal until the afternoon around 1pm or so and eat the second around 6pm or 7pm
2) eat my calories in two meals of 200 calories each
3) eat lots of veggies and protein!

Good luck!

Happy Tuesday JUDDD'ers!

It was a pretty rough start to my morning after a fairly sleepless night (Oh the joys of motherhood!). Hopefully I'll be able to sneak a nap in at some point today.

I was quite discouraged with myself yesterday because my DD came in around 725 calories. But, to my surprise the scale was down some this morning. I was at 208.0. I'm not going to get too excited and claim that loss until I see it on my official weigh day (Saturday). Dare I even hope that I lose a few more ounces to make it a solid pound this week?

Mistydisa- I tend to keep things fairly simple on DD's. It's easier for me to get through the day when I'm not doing any major cooking. Because I have a family I've utilized the grill a lot on DD's. Fat free hot dogs, turkey burgers, chicken breasts and most of the time I pair the meat up with a vegie or salad and sometimes a fruit.
OH! And pickles... I almost forgot. Pickles are my new favorite DD food.

Good Morning JUDDDers!

I had a successful DD yesterday and so glad today is UD. TOM is right around the corner so I am retaining, as usual. TOM has been weird for me the last few months. I have had a 28 day cycle for over 20 years, and it's usually right on target. The last few months it has been 30 days and today I am day 31 and still waiting. Does that mean peri-menopause? I am 36, so not sure if I am the age for it. Seems like my PMS has been a little worse too.

I have my UD all planned out today and going to try to stick to Fast Five style, which used to be easy for me, but has been more of a challenge lately. I haven't figured out why, but would like to get back on track.

Anyway, Happy JUDDDIng everyone! Sorry if I sound like a bummer...lol.

Michelle- 36 does sound early for perimenopause, but it may just be a change in your cycles. I had that happen about 10 years ago. I am nearly 49 now and they were always 30 days, then went to 24 days for about 5 years, now they are all over the map and I am definitely in peri-m. Since I track everything in a journal, I now see that I always stall right before I start and often gain a couple of lbs. (bloat, sore boobs, etc.) and then do not drop the weight until the tom is completely gone. The bummer about this is that because my cycles are now so short, this stuff now takes up almost a third of every month. It is frustrating.

Mistydisa: I have posted lots of dd recipes on these juddd boards, but would be glad to share if any sound good. I always have just one meal in the evening, so I try and keep them between 300-400 cal, and fairly low carb. (I do some carbs on up days)
Faves are: chicken fajita salad, cobb salad, chopped salad, kung pao chicken, smothered hamburger patty, cajun sauteed fish, prawns scampi. If you want any specific recipes, just let me know and I will either post here or p.m. you.
I am a person who needs variety, so I have really tried to come up with lots of things to have that fill me (hubby too) up, but still stay low cal. After low carbing for so long, it has been a challenge to have to use stuff like light mayo and cheeses, but it is only every other day, so it is worth it.

Trish-
Good to see the scale moving down for you. I agree not to claim it right now, but at least you KNOW it will move for you.

Michelle-
I agree with Snaggle that TOM is probably just shifting--our hormones do strange things throughout our lives. It's been a long time for me, but my memory is that I had a couple of shifts like that prior to peri--yes, you're too young. Good news about the DD. Once you get back into the swing of JUDDD, you'll find it all easier. I think if DDs weren't habit for me, I'd find them harder.

Snaggle-
But all that TOM 'weight' is just water, so although it's annoying, don't think of it as anything but hormones. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but after menopause, I STILL have hormonal cycles of water retention, but without TOM it's much more difficult to track them--i.e., anticipate them. I'm not as organized as you, so I don't chart them to see if there's a pattern, but you might want to continue doing that because it helps to know that it's all water (I can tell by my 'pudgy fingers' whenever I'm retaining).

On DD food--
I"m the exception here because I eat in the morning, and I usually eat 3x a day. I keep it VERY simple and focus on protein, so I might have a steakburger patty (bison, 4 oz=160 cal,), an eggwhite 'omelet' (usually w/spinach or broccoli @100 cal), or a couple of shakes @ 85 cal each.
I got away from shakes for a while because they don't really satisfy me, and I'm trying to avoid artificial sweeteners. But they give good protein for few calories, and I want to use up the mixes I have, so I'm going to go back to them for a while--e.g., two shakes and a burger for the day = 330 cal. and about 64g of protein.

I drink a lot of black coffee in the morning (my indulgence), and hot green tea throughout the day. This week since summer seems to have arrived here in NY, I'm drinking my green tea cold, but I made it from my own brewed tea (loose leaves). I find that staying hydrated is very important because sometimes 'hunger' can actually be thirst.

Today is DD2 and it feels *much* harder than DD1. Boo.
I'm hongry!
But I have a plan. I'm sticking to my plan! Yes, yes I am!
Sorry...just trying to give myself a pep talk.
I can do it, right?

Yes you can Agee!!
They do get easier, although every once in a while you will get a tough one. For me I cannot figure out the triggers, but I am pretty sure that boredom/lack of anything occupying my time, contributes.

With other diets, I used to have the hardest time getting back on plan after a few planned days off, but last thursday I had my first dd in over a week and I sailed thru no problem...................but then Saturday...........well, not so good. I actually had what I would call my first "failed" down day. I was great until the end, but just couldn't stop from nibbling on some stuff, then hubby opened a bottle of wine. You can imagine the rest!

I will not beat myself up too much because it was only the first time in 4 months of juddding that I blew my down day, plus I had a great one yesterday.
It just is plain HARD sometimes.

Embarrassing

Okay, got a bit of an embarrassing question here....

Anyone have any....hmmm...how to phrase....tummy troubles? Gastric upset? on up days in the beginning? On my last two up days, I've had some issues (that commercial that goes "Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now" comes to mind, lol). Anyone else? Is this normal?

Not me, but I suffer from the opposite problem, so that wouldn't be an effect that I'd experience.
I hope others will chime in to see how common this is.

Could it be something you ate on your DD than you don't normally have?

Sorry, I've only had one UD, so I don't have a lot of experience with gastric effects caused by eating normally after eating lightly...but being in ketosis generally gives me tummy upset, so maybe that's it? Of course, everything gives me tummy upset, so I'm not a good example.
So - DD#2 done! Woot! And I only went over by 100 calories. Hopefully. I had 100 left (out of 500) and although I'd planned to eat a boiled egg, instead I ate 5 spoonfuls of spaghetti sauce with meat in it. Leftovers. Standing at fridge.
It was homemade so I don't really know the calories. I'm estimating 200 since 1 cup is 300, according to some calorie counting website.
So much for the plan.
Anyhoo, off I am to the beach, where I won't be eating anything standing at the fridge. Then Sunday I'll be back with DD#3 and on this plan for real.

I don't think so.... Nothing out of the ordinary except for a Slim Fast shake on one of the days.... Both times it's occurred immediately after my first meal on the UD.... Like my body is freaking out about having a real meal or something.... I dunno......

Exactly one week ago today I had my first DD and guess what! I'm down 3 pounds this week! woo-hoo!!!! I know it's "beginners" loss but I'm still so happy! I must admit that DDs have been pretty tough for me but the guilt free eating that follows the DD is totally worth it. I stick pretty much to low-moderate carb on my UD but that's because I plan to eat this way forever. My cravings are less and less each day which seems like a miracle! I plan to stay off the scale for the next week because that really seems to throw me so next weight update will be next Wednesday (morning of an up day).

Tomorrow is a DD for me and I'm going to try to do 2 meals and 2 snacks. I've had super low energy on previous DD's so hopefully this will keep me going:

Breakfast: Coffee AND tea and WATER WATER WATER
Lunch: 2 scrambled EGGS (fried in PAM) and lots of salad greens and half a yellow heirloom tomato chopped up into the salad
Snack: Greens and Whey Shake
Dinner: 2 oz grilled chicken lots of salad greens with the other half of the yellow heirloom tomato chopped up into the salad
Late snack: 25 grams of sunflower seeds in shell

Seems like a pretty full menu!

So here's an interesting question... who are the 'old timers' in our group? You know, those of us who have been around forever and can say 'hang in there, this works!"

I've been doing this since January 1, so I'm an 8 month JUDDDER. Anyone older than me>?

mammapo-

I started at Christmas (couple of days before), so about a week longer than you. I think Kisha started at about the same time we did. Since this works for me (post-menopausal and hypothyroid), it will work for anyone!

I initially thought of JUDDD as something temporary, to spur weight loss, since I was stalled on standard low carb, but now I'm really thinking of it as a 'forever' WOE. It seems to me that being able to raise DD calorie levels in maintenance would make this very tolerable. And lowering DDs if there's any 'weight creep' would also work well--it seems to me.

I do JUDDD low carb for health reasons, and I intend to continue with low carb eating because that's best for my body.

I have been doing some form of Intermittent Fasting since January 2nd. I started with Fast Five and lost 8 lbs. and then switched to JUDDD in April and lost 10 more. Since then I combine the two. I have hit a snag the last couple of months that I believe is thyroid and hormonal, but hanging in there.

Yesterday, I had a great UD and kept it really low carb. I can feel a difference today in that I feel more in control. I realize it's only 10am though...lol.

I was a 'temporarily for now" gal too, but I honestly can't leave this WOE for long before I'm seriously desperate to get back to the schedule. I'm pretty sure at this point that it's a lifer thing for me now. I've never - EVER EVER - stayed with a 'diet' this long before. Did I mention NEVER????

I have had this problem in the past. Honestly it happened for about a month before I figured out that it was important for my first meal on UD to be NOT GREASY.

You me and Leo are the "old timers". We've all been around the same amount of time. I started mid-december last year but went on vacation over new years so I count my start date basically January 1, 2009.

SO here's my status.
I'm here. I've been off rotation and had a few real bad days. The worst days I've had since I started on program almost two years ago. Right now I'm focusing on good clean low carb eating but I'm eating everyday. I'm trying to get back on an even keel before I attempt a DD. One will probably be coming up soon. My weight isn't out of control. I'm at 191 which is right in my latest stall range. So I'm here, I'm lurking but I'm not doing DDs as of this moment.

DD today, and it's been more bearable than usual--I think because I'm busy cleaning house and thus distracted from thoughts of food (and icky stuff to clean kills the appetite. It's amazing how much "hunger" is mental because I don't notice it when I'm distracted by something else.

*hanging in head in shame b/c I've been gone for 3 weeks or so*

OK, that's done.

I'm BACK!

And I'm moved to a new city.

And my eating throughout the move (last 2 weeks in VA -- lots of "good bye meals" which was kinda ridiculous since I'm only gone for a year, then on the road, and now my first week of chaos in NOLA) was totally NOT on plan.

However: my month on JUDDD before this all started had given me enough insight that I did ok, even if I didn't "do" DDs. I didn't indulge in EVERYTHING just because I'm in the Land of the Great OH!MY!GOD! Food And Drink. Because I know it will be there tomorrow. And if, for some reason, it's not? Oh well. I'll certainly not die because I didn't eat X today.

And I'm happy to report that, even with my eating off any kind of plan, I'm down a lb -- after having been stuck at 185 for a month. So I'll take it!

Today is my first DD. It's 12:45 and I've had a bit of chicken breast. I will make some chicken salad later.

Now, I'm off to catch up on everyone else!

Welcome Back, giJ!

As you will discover, JUDDD is the most forgiving of plans--one DD, and you're right back. Three weeks away without a gain is tremendous, and although I love new places, I hate moving more than anything, so I'd probably be up a lot by now if I had to move.

One nice thing about NOLA (apart from the fact that it's the eating capital of the world) is that, as you say, the food will still be there tomorrow, so you can enjoy all those wonderful goodies--on alternate days.

Ain't it though?

When I packed for my move, I sorted by size -- XL, L, and M -- and put only the XL and L in my closet. (L being hopeful on my part - I'm still in a 16.) The M wardrobe is in my guest room closet, to be lusted over periodically.

Hi Naomi! I have been following JUDDD since November. I've been in maintenance for awhile now (since your very helpful e-mails, can't remember when that was, at least a few months).

For those of you who are new, I was able to increase my DD cals and maintain my weight. I have been in maintenance for months. My weight range is between 113-116 these days. I was eating 500 cal DD's and now they are between 800-1000. I don't count my UD cals but estimate them to be around 2,000-2500 or so.

So yes, hang in there, it works and it works on maintenance with increased cals. This is definately a woe for me for the rest of my life.

Going back into lurkdom for now, but I am always cheering everyone on from the sidelines (I read this thread daily but didn't really have anything to contribute)!

One nice thing about NOLA (apart from the fact that it's the eating capital of the world) is that, as you say, the food will still be there tomorrow, so you can enjoy all those wonderful goodies--on alternate days.
Thanks Leo. I was a little scared to get on the scale last night. I mean, I knew any gain would come off quickly, but I was afraid as to HOW MUCH gain there would be. Imagine my delight that I saw a 1 lb loss (which made my mind jump to "OMG! how much would I have LOST if I'd been doing right?" but I let it go quickly).

Today is going ok. I just keep telling myself "I can have a sno ball tomorrow. I can have a snow ball tomorrow. Tomorrow. Tomorrow. Tomorrow."

I am so glad I gave you hope. That is why I popped in. I keep quiet as I know it can be tough sometimes for those who are still in the weight loss process and I dunno, it may be crazy, but I felt a bit sheepish posting about my success. But I think it's important once in a while to chime in about how great this woe is for maintaining as well.

Kisha - you are always an inspiration. I find your posts so uplifting. I am a person who is very motivated and inspired by the journey/process, and not necessarily just achieving the goal (this is in all aspects of my life, not just weight loss). For example when I am training for a run, it is the training that builds character (getting out there even in the rain, when I am exhausted, lazy etc), not so much the completion of the race (although that helps too). Your journey and perseverance shows great strength and character.

EmandM--agree about Kisha!

I had a thought about JUDDD and maintaining from your post. I was reading recently that many people re-gain their weight (apart from those who think of it as a 'diet' and just start eating junk again) because they love the process, and when it's over, they are confused and bored by maintenance and tend to slide into the standard American diet.

Since on JUDDD, we continue the DD/UD system, perhaps that actually helps keep us focused because we remain involved in the process, even if we're not still losing. (And I'm GLAD you posted because I'm just finishing a 400 cal DD, and 800 cal for maintenance seems positively luxurious at this moment--talk about a motivator
