Leo41: Thanks for the advice on not worrying about two UDs. I hadn't thought about it that way, lots of people do two UDs on weekends right from the start. BTW, that's fantastic about your loss, even if it is 1.5 lbs a week.
onceNforall: Yes, it's been a lot of reading, I was having a great time reading through it during my first few days committed to this plan! I'm now on April JUDDD and also reading your sister thread... lol... got a lot of great tips and info through it all - like yesterday I bought some radishes and boiled them and munched on them with salt and pepper with dinner and later on - boiling them takes out the radish taste and they have a nice crunch, fill you up for very few calories. A nice change from celery! Dreamergirl: Hi! Wow, 1200 cal, that sounds pretty ambitious. I guess it'll help if your low carb. I'm trying to make sure my up days are 1600-2000 cal, so that my down days are easier... katwhitts: Congrats, down a pound! 5 mini-meals sounds great... what kind of meals? I have to get better at this low calorie stuff, I save my 400 cals for dinner. And yeah, I'm amazed I'm not starving the morning after a down day. I just kind of force myself to eat a piece of fruit anyway. giJ: You can do it! You know you can! I'm up 4 lbs too after eating almost 6000 calories in two days! Don't worry I'm sure lots of it is water for both of us. After a couple good down days I hope that I'm 141 again snaggle: I love that, just one day and you are on plan! This diet really takes the stress and self-recrimination out of the diet mentality for me - Congrats on your 1 lb!kisha: Hey, thanks for the welcome, definitely a lot of back reading and it's been worth it, while I wasn't part of this group, I could go to the thread and find a ton of great support, useful info, and be inspired by all of the successes... so far I've done 3 DD, had a few days of crazy eating in between, I hear ya about the scale being on a heinous number... let's have a good week of JUDDDing and get it back where it belongs!! I found that down days on their own help eliminate the water retention that comes from carbing up and eating a lot of calories... I was peeing like crazy yesterday and last night, and only down a lb. today... even with the lack of food weight! Well, after my next DD I hope I'll be back to 141... today, an UD, I'm focusing on eating normal and healthy and not all crazy! Fruit for breakie, bean chili and corn tostadas and salsa for lunch, and I'm making a new carrot soup to have with dinner, pork shoulder. Desert, yocheese with nuts and coconut, and call it a day (I hope!) |

A New Approach
I'm taking a page from Leo's book and am going to be pre-planning both my UD and DD this week. I absolutely MUST get a handle on my UD and want them to be around 1800 cals. DDs are easier for my typically coming in where I need to. I'm planning out my UDs this week in ****** and am hoping this will help me succeed!

Dreamer girl!! Glad to have you join us...great supportive group here. I agree with Kisha...enjoy those UD's. According to the book, the DD calories are the most important and actually eating til satisfied on UD's is important too so you don't experience "diet fatigue". |

Hi everyone, I'm back. I had a very rough week after my puppy died and spent a lot of time eating, especially carbs. I haven't really fallen apart food wise like this since I started LCing, but boy when I do it I know how to do it good lol.
So today I'm getting my carbs under control and want to focus on that for a couple days before getting back into my JUDDD rotation, I think. I'm worried doing a DD will be hard after a high carb week. Is that generally the case? No idea what the scale says yet, no need to torment myself further. The carbs were painful enough (seriously, I felt like crap! And they didnt' even taste that good, but it was like I couldn't stop). |

Hi Hon! We missed your posts... I think your plan is just perfect. After getting carbed up I think focusing on good clean plain old low carb for a few days is a great idea. Wait until you get back on an even keel with that (maybe wait til you're in ketosis) until you try tackling a Down Day... (((hugs))) |

Katwhitts: Wow, that sounds very good! I love the rice cake/whip cream ice cream cake idea. But I'm also thinking, you must be very disciplined... those kinds of yummy low calorie treats would be very tempting to crash my down day... anything sweet and/or crunchy, it seems I want to go back for more.
But I am starting to notice the natural moderation this diet seems to create. I had a pear for breakfast, went out shopping for some produce, picked up a bag of dates to snack on before lunch. I only had 5-6 of them... in the past I could easily have eaten at least twice that. Then, lunch, just one bowl of chili and some tostadas, I felt full before I felt like getting more. Already, it feels like I have increased sensitivity to my food and appetite and hunger and satiety signals. So far it's been two steps forward and one step back, hopefully now I get to take another two steps forward |

I actaully find to easier to fast after a decent amount of time eat 'whatever' as on sunday i ate almost an entire box of cereal (moment of weakness no excuses). Getting back to just what you eat sounds good thought... then you can work on how to eat it. -but let us know how everything goes. My heart goes out to you

Good (easy) DD today....
Well, DD #2 was certainly easier than DD #1! Came in at 440 calories:
11:30 Atkins shake...160 calories 3:00 7 radishes...15 calories 5:30 4 oz. pork loin...120 calories 2 cup steamed summer squash...40 calories 1 cup steamed broccoli with sprinkle Parmesan cheese...50 calories later tonight 6oz. watermelon...55 calories Funny...I wasn't hungry at all today. I had lots of energy and even mowed the lawn. I haven't done that in about 2 years, but my knees aren't as painful as they were....could that be a result of this already with just 2 DD's?

Spiralsky-
You are absolutely right about the restraint JUDDD gives you. I've been doing this for almost 6 months now and apart from the weight loss, the best thing about this plan is the insight its given me into my food issues and eating habits (the bad ones:-) Like you, I'm now fully satisfied on much less food, and that's a wonderful feeling. You're going to love this! Sherrie- I'd say yes, it's possible that experiencing less pain in your knees can happen after just a couple of DDs. I have severe osteoarthritis, and my knees are totally shot, but I've experienced a significant decrease in pain from JUDDD. |

Hey guys!
Today is DD for me and it's 6pm and I am NOT hungry. That is unusual, but I am going to go with it and make it a water fast. Going to go take my shower, find a good book and make it an early night. to all the newcomers! |

Hi Ladies! Each of you does inspire me as I can hit low points during my down days, so thank you for being here!
Last week in review: 2 of 3 DD's were in check. Mon & Wed = great. Friday, my DH insisted we eat out so I will have to call that a moderate day at 1400 cals. I tried hard to get Saturday to be the DD; alas, we went out that evening also, so another moderate day. Both Fri & Sat I did eat veggies most of the day. Saturday was a heavy gardening day. Sunday a moderate bike ride. New week: July 13th is going very well. Only one small bout with hunger this morning, but I had my lunch early. Tonight: Kuda squash cooked soft with 2 eggs soft cooked on top. Days' cals will be 481. |

First day of a true, full water fast.
My dog is sick and i am basically too upset and worried to eat anything (usually i binge tho). I have done nothing but cry all day long, and cried so hard i threw up this morning, my emotions are effecting my body so profoundly i have no idea what to do. |

This is not supposed to be a diet where you alternate between eating next to nothing on half the days and not enough on the other half. It's a diet where you only restrict calories half the days.

Dov, I had a 5 day high carb binge, and did today as a low carb DD (a few calories higher than I aimed for, but still under 600), but I started out thinking today might just be an induction-level carb day. Do what feels right to you, as you detox and get back on track.

Leo41: Six months doing this is definitely a huge inspiration. And that you are getting results of up to 1.5 lbs/week average, now - WOW. You have really persevered... I'd like to do the same, for weight loss, and for maintenance. I love that you notice the insight JUDDD has given you to food issues and eating habits... I know that if I backslide out of the plan, I won't have that insight, and will go back into unconscious, stress eating, this plan is like it could be a secret weapon for health and good nourishment. I hope it keeps getting better and better for me, I look forward to the three week point where we get a boost of energy and mood and such - but honestly, my mood and energy seems to be improved already!
Dreamergirl: Good plan on upping the calories - totally, enjoy those UP days, it's what makes this whole thing doable. Weasel: Glad you mentionned 2500 calories is feasible for an up day and that you're losing on it even after stalls in the past, it's my upper limit and I just about reached it today. But I lose on 1500 calories/day for a week so I could do 2500 calorie UP days (healthy calories) all the time, I guess. Still, I'm a major calorie cycler, one day will be 1600, the next, 2500, I'll probably just keep it like that. Aren't you the one who thinks it's more about the hormones due to the semi-fasting, rather than the calorie averages? giJ: YES, we will do it!! Remykins: So sorry I know how you feel, I went through it a couple months ago too... lost control of my diet too for the week and a half my bird was sick... I know it's really hard.oobladee: today sounds GREAT. 481 calories, perfect. NoSugarSHell: Wow - a water fast!!! I'd love to hear how it goes for you, and if you think it helps. I'm not sure I'm there yet, it might make me binge, or go off plan, but you've been doing this for a while now, right? aim in Fla: Hey, I'm ready to get down to 127 - maybe we'll take the trip down there together... hope we both do great. Actually my first goal is only 7 lbs or so, and I give myself two months, to get to around 134. Then 3-5 months more for the next 7 lbs... Then 6 months of strict maintenance... What's your timeline like? Dovelette: So sorry about your puppy. It's really hard to stay on track when going through such hard emotions ![]() |

Spiralsky-
I think your plan for 'strict' maintenance for a while is a good one, as I understand that's where most people fail. Do you have the JUDDD book? I'm far from maintenance, but in the book, Dr. J talks about adding calories on DDs for maintenance, so that you're still alternating (I guess to get the benefits), but not as severely. Then, if you find yourself gaining for any reason, you simply lower the DD calories. I recently read a post on the Main Lobby by BloodSugar101 (who I admire) who mentioned that we always need to factor maintenance into our weight loss because maintaining will ONLY be slightly more calories. Too many people think they can just eat whatever once they're at goal. A man I knew many years ago had about 100 lbs to lose, and he went on one of those total liquid diets under medical supervision. But in every conversation I had with him, all he talked about was what he would eat when he was "finished" with his diet. I knew that didn't bode well. I left town for six months, and when I returned, he's just lost all his weight and looked terrific. Within 3 months, he gained 120 lbs! It's all in having the right mindset, it seems to me, and I've never had a better perspective on food and eating than with JUDDD. That's why I plan to stick with it for the long term. |

I think calorie cycling like you do could produce a hormonal response to shed fat, also. In spring of 2008 I attempted a multiday-cycle carb/calorie cycling plan, but I couldn't stick to it. I couldn't work out what to do each day, and worse, I got hooked on carbs again. JUDDDD works for me because it's so binary, so easy.Dreamer girl's plan of alternating 500/1200 is a recipe for starvation response, metabolic slowdown, and a body that is primed to pile on more fat than before when the plan becomes intolerable -- and that few calories over a prolonged period will become intolerable, especially as she is including carbohydrate. (Sorry to talk about you in the third person, dg!) Yesterday was my DD#16. Somehow I picked up a pound again, so I'm back up to 141 this morning, after my JUDDDD low of 140 last Saturday. Perhaps TOM is on its way. I thought it was coming next week, but maybe it's a little early this time 'round. Yesterday my DD was ultralow, only around 250 calories. A HB egg, garden salad with homemade vinaigrette, and a few french fries with ketchup. |

Hi all. I finished up my first DD at 9PM last night. Went to work around 11pm and started my UP day. I had a steak salad with FF dressing, animal crackers, baked lays chips. All that within my 8 hour shift. Right now Im eating a bowl of LIFE cereal and maybe a small chicken salad later if I get hungry. At 9PM tonight when I begin DD#2 im going to try an AWF, no more than 200 calories or less.

Glad to see some newer folks and thank you guys for the encouragement. I'm shooting today for a MD, meaning around 1200 calories for me, LC of course, then tmw an up day, and possibly 800 Thursday, getting back into regular rotation (DD saturday). I will admit that part of my reason for easing back in is that I'm still finding either the need for comfort or punishment (not sure which) with food right now. Ugh mental crap, worse than the physical. I do feel "head hungry" and I'm sure part of that is the carbs going bye bye. I'm so happy to be posting again, it's helping a lot.
