Dasiey, and SS, I am always envious of those who are at a stage of their lives where babies are still arriving in their families. Ours is in a stage where that is not happening. One grandchild and she is not yet of an age to settle down and start a family so I have to make do with news of babies in other families.

Hooray for you and for your good doc Kisha! What great news to know you are thriving again and will soon be dropping the weight. I hope your week-end outing is a lot of fun now that you can put the worries behind you and get on with living your life the way you want.

Wallaby
, I am so sorry about the sunburn--I've never had very many of them but still remember how painful they can be. I am always extra careful of the sun though; my father (fair-skinned blue-eyed Norwegain/English blend) died of melanoma and our #1 DD has had two removed. She sees the melanoma specialist at UM every 6 months and watches her own skin like a hawk. It is sure nothing to fool around with.

SS, please let us know how you are doing--I hated carbing up for my 6 hr GTT's and hope you wont have to go through this again and they can get your pancreas doing what it is supposed to without insulin.

Em&M the story of your parents courtship is a very endearing one--how lovely that your grandfather "picked" your father for your mom. This takes me back --I hated science--all I ever wanted to do was take humanities courses and wouldnt you know, ended up married to my college biology professor. He had been a very young PhD (23) and it was his first year of college teaching at age 24 ..coming off a post doc at Princeton. I had dropped out of college and then returned and the kids in the dorm I was in charge of of told me (he was only to be there for a year filing in for a prof who had gotten sick) that I had better get the rest of my my science requirements out of the way in spring quarter while he was there as he was a very good teacher and would be leaving to teach at UVA the next year. I mean I really HATED science--just wanted to live my life studying English lit and then teaching it. But he was an excellent teacher and I worked myself half to death in those two science courses I took from him. Field trips during the spring term for the ecology class led to summertime trout fishing in the mountains with him. This was in the day when there was nothing so immoral or unprofessional at a small college about a prof openly dating an older student (well, I was his same age and also was considered "staff" because of my position in the dorm so that helped) He was VERY shy, and for a long time, it seemed he thought I was just another fishing buddy but I left for Charlottesville with him that fall--it was a real whirlwind courtship and we are so totally different in personality--it is amazing that we are still together but here we are: still married and still glad of it and still able to make each other laugh.

Hi ladies! Hope everyone is doing well today. I am still in shock over Michael Jackson's death (sad for Farrah and Ed, but saw those ones coming). I know he had his issues, but wow, what an iconical genius. He marks an era of my life. I adored him and his music (had the buttons, t-shirts, glitter glove). He was my first album, first concert etc. So tragic.

As for my eating, I am doing well, staying at the same weight. Not sure what I will do once my course starts. I am doing a Fast-1 at this point and making sure I get in enough calories. I am not hungry during the day at all, I guess my body is adjusting. I will just play it by ear during my course. I am going to give up coffee starting tomorrow, wish me luck!

MBB - I love the story of you and DH! My DH and I are very different as well, but similar in the ways that count. He may like to watch sports, listen to rap music ad hate reading while I am a bookworm, who can't stand to watch sports on tv and am not a fan of rap. But we have the same core values, goals in life and sense of humour, so I guess that is why we get along so well!

Daisey - yes, a sad week for sure! It's strange that people are affected by someone they never met, but it's that surprise of his age (50 is so young) and the mark of his music on certain times of my life that got to me.

How is everyone doing?

I think it is such fun to read how people met their partners. So amazing that chance encounters can be the source of the loves of our lives. DH and I met on a blind date set up by my sister when she was living in Montreal. He thought I might be a "fast American" and he might get lucky so he agreed to the date. I was 18 and just wanted an escort to a dance club so I agreed to go and the rest is history (and DH didn't tell me until years later that he wanted a fast American and got a shy virgin that it took months to woo - ah irony.).

I'm still carbing up for my tests and hating it! I thought I might enjoy free license to eat fruit and some starchy veggies but I hate to see my blood sugar up and have put on 5 pounds of water weight. I know I will reverse it all after the tests, but it bothers me just the same.

Nothing new just now - except the summer is racing by and our new passports still have not arrived. Our trip to Canada may be put off until fall.

Daisey - no, I just know they can be painful to pass. Do you feel anything? How did you know you had them? I hope it passes quickly and is not painful.

SS - how hilarious about your DH and the fast American that he didn't get! Amazing that you met on a blind date too and have been together ever since. So romantic! Sorry to hear you aren't liking the carbs. You will lose the water weight quickly. When is the test? Why do you have to carb up?

OOH Dasiey. Kidney stones hurt. The Dr will get it sorted out.

Emandm I have to carb up because the lab norms are based on the standard american diet of 200-300 carbs daily. As soon as the labs are drawn early Thursday morning I'll be on meat and eggs only for probably 2 weeks to undo damage done in 4 days. I hope whatever med I start doesn't cause problems. I still feel like a failure that I couldn't keep my blood sugar down with diet and exercise but I gave it my best shot. I keep reading how type 2 diabetes is preventable if one just follows a LC diet, stays at ideal body weight, and exercises but it didn't work for me - I got it anyway and it is getting worse but maybe it is not standard type 2 - anyway I'll know more after the tests. Just hope this new Dr I'm trying is not a total jerk!

So I can't zip my jeans, my ankles are full of water, and my BGL's are through the roof - why did I ever like carbs? Tonight I had cherry pie. Figured if I have to suffer I'd rather do it with cherry pie than oatmeal. Next week when I'm whining about meat and egg remind me how awful I felt this week. If nothing else I am now completely dedicated to VLC for life.

I read recently that the increase in kidney stones in children is due to too much protein and salt. But your diet is very healthy, so it can't be that. I guess some people just get them?

SS - lol about the pie. I will be sure to remind you if you start missing carbs once you get back on plan!

my goodness, Daisey, I am so sorry to hear about your problem--tell those docs they have to get you cured before Lydia arrives or your friend MBB will come and make them verrrrry sorry!

And SS, I am so sorry you are having to go through all of this! When I used to get 6 hr GTT's done, I hated that carbing-up part of it as much as I hated drinking the 10 gallons of glucose that went along with the test. (well, it FELT like 10 gallons!)

Gosh, I dont think I have ever had a busier summer---not much time to smell the roses DH is growing We are going to have a house full of company in a few weeks and I havent even gotten well into the spring cleaning yet because of a couple of art projects that have had me tied up. Also, I still have stuff to do in the house we gave the daughters last winter. ARRGGHH! Too much to do and too lazy and bored with some of it to get it all done quickly...mosaics are more fun

My cat Sweetie Pie helps make the sun come up in the morning for me and she clearly loves me dearly. Well, OBVIOUSLY! I mean, after all, a few minutes ago I found a present she had brought in for me--a dead (still warm) vole had been deposited on the dining room rug. DH's two cats do even better, (they have their own cat door in one separate room as they are not allowed in the rest of the house) They bring him voles and mice and moles which are still alive and capable of running around. I believe they regard them as toys rather than food and it certainly keeps DH and me from getting bored as we pursue them wildly around the room lest they crawl under somethinng and die (has happened more than once despite our best efforst) .

I am thankful to be able to do VLC and FF and am just staying right about 162,163,164 so am relaxing about the question of weight for now as long as I feel good. SS, cant wait for you to get back to "real life" and give up the crap you have to eat right now! I know you will love being back at it again the way you are happiest.

Meanwhile, sounds like Kisha has got her meddies adjusted well and is on her way back to being poster girl for the JUDDD weightloss plan!

wallaby, I hope you have recovered completely from your sunburn.

also, you could scare hell out of your doc if you threatened to sic Frank and Eddie on him--they look VERY FIERCE to me! All those TEETH they are surely hiding behind those sweet faces --no doubt they have been trained to hunt bear and mountain lions in their earlier years. [You probably have a lot of those (bears and mountain lions) in Indiana! ]
