I can't believe it!! I've not been in the 150s since elementary school!
On top of that, that makes 5 lb loss since starting JUDD less than 3 weeks ago! That is just unheard of for me! WOW!!!

I think the reason so many of us on these boards are hypothyroid is twofold. First, for many of us, it was very difficult to get a diagnosis (if you read the thyroid section, you'll understand why). If you're hypo, it means that your thyroid slows down, and without a diagnosis and the appropriate meds (nothing helps except Rx), people put on weight, regardless of what they eat, since the thyroid controls metabolism. Thyroid disease tends to occur at times of hormonal changes--e.g., puberty, childbirth--and it's most common at menopause. Thus, many older women find themselves suddenly gaining weight and unable to lose.

Second, once you're hypothyroid, the metabolism is slowed so that losing weight becomes a challenge even when you're properly medicated. So you'll find many hypothyroids in any group of people trying to lose weight. And since low carb is known to be the best WOE for hypo, there would be even more people with thyroid problems on LCF. Several of us have come to JUDDD because we've been stalled on various other plans. Personally, my metabolism is so slow (combination of menopause and hypo) that I cannot lose unless I consume <1000 cal a day. I cannot manage that daily, but I can average that on JUDDD because of the DD.

Thanks leo for taking the time to explain hypothyroid to me. I am glad that JUDD and LC are working for you and others. That makes sense that this LCF would have a lot of hypothyroid people on it if LC is a good WOE for them. I have not hit menopause yet, but I know my sister three years older than I (46) just had her blood work done to see if she has thyroid issues. It's good that all this information is here so that if it ever becomes my challenge, I have some good resources on how to deal with it. I admire all of you who work hard at eating right and dealing with this challenge.

I also wanted to check in and account for my UD. I stayed within my calorie limit by 20 calories (2,220) but I ate 144 carbs. I'd like to keep my carbs under 100 so I'll have to work on that.

I will be trying to stay around 500 calories tomorrow. I plan on having a boiled egg and 1C of LC coleslaw for lunch and for dinner, 1C berries with 4T of cream. I tend to get a lot done on DDs so that is a good thing.

It's fun to read of all the progress being made. I read the JUDDD book and thought it was o.k. I didn't appreciate that he didn't think much of LC but I can see where he is coming from. But I do understand the nuts and bolts of the JUDDD diet and in three weeks have lost 9lbs. I can't argue with that. I plan my UDs and DDs in advance and I write everything I eat down in a tablet so that I am accountable to someone (me). I weigh every day so that I can get an idea of what's happening. Some days the weight bothers me but most days I just record it and move on.

Hi everyone! I stumbled upon this thread over the weekend and became so intrigued. By the support here AND this plan! I have read through all of May and then April's posts (and, man, there were a lot!). Went to Dr. Johnson's site and have the book in my Amazon cart.

I am excited to start this tomorrow but fearful also. I start soooo many different plans with a gung ho attitude and then fizzle out feeling deprived or nutty and, since hitting my mid-40s, frustrated at losing the same 10 pounds over and over again. I do have a lap band but I think the rest of this journey is up to me as I have been this same weight for the last year despite several attempts at losing more weight.

I am hypothyroid and learned a lot from reading the posts. I feel I do better with a little higher carb count using whole grains, fruits, etc. I have gallstones so I have to be careful eating too much fat because I am in agony afterward. I think the calorie counting will not be an issue as I have been a veteran Weight Watcher and am used to counting what I eat.

I look forward to learning a lot from everyone.

Hi Laura and welcome! I understand the gung ho and fizzle cycle. I have found though that I really would like to continue to eat this way long term. I feel so much better eating this way. Let us know how it's going!

I WILL have a DD tomorrow. AFter my week of vacation, even though I was trying to stick to my JUDDD'ing as much as possible, I am having a hard time really having a DD. I WILL tomorrow and if I don't, kick me, ok? I had a good day today though and didn't eat junk. Just dinner and then went out with hubby for a coffee. Definitely an UD but one of my most successful ones yet. Maybe I'll get this thing yet!

Well I made it through my walk today...13.1 miles (half marathon) in 3 hrs, 30 min. Felt good, and except for 2 big blisters and a little soreness, I felt great afterwards! This is the 3rd year I have done it and next year I am hoping/planning/preparing to RUN it instead of walk. According to my Nike Ipod sensor, I burned 1,719 calories today so I am hoping that wipes out most of the UD celebrating I did at Red Robin?!!

Congrats to all the losers! Its so motivating to see everyone's progress! KUTGW!

welcome ellgee and j4christ! I know you will enjoy the JUDD plan-just remember the first few DD are the hardest (and yet, soon, they become something you even look FORWARD to.) Especially when you know the scale will be consistently dropping!

Hey guys!

Well, I need a big swift kick in the butt! My last two "moderate" days have been way more than UD's. Sooo, I think I need to really start some true alternating. I am going to do this week as normal and then Sunday when I usually do a moderate day I am going to do a DD and alternate from there. I think it will help me lose a little faster for sure. I CAN do it(but a little nervous..lol).

Welcome, Laura!

I just wanted to say that I don't do well on any specific "plan," but I love JUDDD because it is so very flexible. I hope you find it good for you, too.

Many of us came to JUDDD because we found ourselves losing and gaining the same 5-10 lbs for some time. For me, it was about a year of frustration, and JUDDD has been the answer. I hope it is for you as well.

Welcome Laura
I hope this is the last plan for you. I feel so much better eating regular foods, this plan is something that I can sustain.
I have three friends that have had the Lap band. One lost 60 pounds and gained it all back because of slippage or (something), the other did not lose at all, and the third did great losing but has gained a few pounds back, she looks great.
I hope that this will help you get the rest of the weight off.

Good Morning!

DD for me today. This weekend was not a very good UD and Moderate Day for me. I haven't stepped on the scale yet this morning because I'm terribly afraid of what it would say! I can tell after 2 days of pretty high carbs and lots of calories it will be a hard DD for me. But, I can do it!

Since both of my boys are finally better I'm hitting the gym hard today! Worst part is, now I feel like I'm coming down with a a dumb cold

Hi Jenny & Laura! Welcome aboard

Retroworx - I agree! Seeing all that food posted on a DD will be tempting!

Kraftymom - WOW! Way to go

Morning all!

Welcome to all the newbies!!! I am still kind of new myself - only my third week, but love JUDD! It has been good to me

Anyway, my UD Saturday was kind of low - around 1100 cals. But, my MD yesterday was prolly more like the UD I should have had Saturday. Saturday I COULD NOT get satisfied! It has been so STRESSFUL around here lately! But, JUDD has kept me in check!

So glad to have a DD today. I am thinking I am a little swollen (water weight) cuz of yesterday. I am just the biggest sponge No matter what I eat, I retain water. Only DDs help me flush all that!

Fast five sounds interesting. I am with you Trishagrll - I am gonna keep it as a little trick up my sleeve in case I stall out on JUDD. So far, I haven't so....I will stick with it.

Gonna keep this DD really simple. Gonna have coffee, cream, a shake and as much liquid as possible. May not eat anything at all~

I wish I could find a doctor that would be willing to try something like this. I've been trying to find a new doctor now for months to treat my hypothyroidism because I just haven't been feeling good. I think my medication needs to be tweaked just a little bit, but because I'm in the "normal range" my doctor won't do anything :-(. This protocol looks so intriguing! Keep us posted on how it works.

Happy Monday everyone! DD for me today. It's a busy day with hardly any down time so should be easy to stay on track. Yesterday's MD (fast 5) turned into a Fast 7:blush: but not going to sweat it. Just going to get on with my DD today.

Here's my DD menu-

B-black coffee chic broth-5 cals
L-1/2 of my chic/noodle picatta (made w/ shiritaki noodles)-80 cals.
few slices cucumbers-10
S-pickles and carrots-30
D-other 1/2 of chic/noodle picatta-80 cals

So that's 205 cals. and that leaves me about 200 cals. to fill in. Maybe an Americano w/ 4 T. 1/2 and 1/2 later in the afternoon for 80 cals. BTW-my cal. allotment according to the website is < 400 so I shoot for 400 on my DD.

Ellgee-I decided on JUDDD for similar reasons. I am notorious for changing plans to suit what I feel like eating which only resulted in my yo0yoing for that past 30 years. I had to really do some hard thinking about my 47 yr. old self and decided that I DO want to eat/drink what I want and that won't change. So in order to be able to do that I do it every other day. So far in the last two weeks I have lost 8 lbs.! Best to you!!!!

Have a great JUDDD day everyone!

DD and week 2

Hi Everyone

Today's a DD for me and after all the fear last week about doing this I am totally fine with it now. Funny how that happens so quickly. I ate over 3000 calories on my UD this weekend. *sigh* I actually thought I'd eaten less but then I logged it into ****** (after the fact) and yeah, over 3000. Like 3100 and 3500 truth be told.

darn.

I haven't been very successful having DD at under 500 calories either, more like 600-650. So we'll give it a real go today. I am at school and all over the place today so I'll be busy. Lots to do.

I hope I can work this WOE right. I'm a little worried about doing that but whatever. Too early to be even thinking like this...

I gotta go!

Enjoy your JUDDD day today.

Howdy!

I tried having a UD Saturday and MD Sunday. Saturday was very stressful and difficult to control. I ate more than a normal UD, but I didn't bother trying to track it. There were hamburgers, chips, sausage, dips, brownies with peanut butter and chocolate chips on them. And okay yes, it was all very tasty, but I spent yesterday feeling terribly guilty. And my stomach is none too pleased either.

Yesterday's MD was ok. I still didn't track anything, but I think I ate moderately. I decided not to weigh in today or over the weekend. Tomorrow is my weigh-in, so I might as well wait and see how far today's DD will take me. It will officially be 4 weeks after today is over. Wish me luck!

I'm going to try to do a true liquid fast today. I have had a little trouble with the last two DDs. They've all been successful, but they got hard last week for some reason. I know I *can* do a liquid fast today, so I just hope I follow through. I think it will give me a good final boost to my one-month weigh-in. My stomach is a little sour, so maybe that's a good thing today.

My trip to the gym was very discouraging! First, I decided since it was the beginning of the month to get weighed and measured. My weight was up one pound on the gym scale since last month. Though, my body fat percentage was down 2.5%... it makes me wonder how accurate that little machine they use really is. I have a hard time believing that my body fat went down 2.5% in one month and I am up a pound. My measurements were all about the same except my waist, down 1 inch.

Then, my workout... holy cow... I can tell I haven't been to the gym in a week. In fact, it seemed much more difficult than other times that I've been gone for a week. I felt like I couldn't lift near what I normally do. Then I was going to do 30 minutes of cardio but after 15 I was so pooped I decided just to do 5 more and call it a day. Whew!

Boy, you guys have been busy! I came back to pages and pages to read.

I had a good weekend. Friday was a DD and I was a little worried because we were on about a 5 hour car ride. It worked out OK though, I just got a ziploc and added cheese, tuna, veggies until I got to 500 cals and ate that while we were on the road. Add in a couple of big gas station fountain sodas and I was good.

Saturday was a good UD. I didn't count cals but we went to a buffet for brunch (low carb except for a piece of cheesecake) and a great Italian place for early dinner where I subbed green beans for the pasta. Mmmmmmm. Later that evening I had a piece of fudge and a few cocktails.

I did a MD Sunday. Ham & eggs for breakfast, bag of peanuts about 1:00 and a salad around 6:00. We were on the road again so I didn't count cals.

I weighed that AM and was pretty happy to see my previous all-time low. I haven't lost anything since last Monday, but since today is a DD I'm hoping to see virgin territory tomorrow.

I did some shopping on vacation. I didn't buy any new jeans because those seem to change size pretty quickly, but I got a few new summer shirts- in a regular L. No plus sizes, no searching and hoping to find XXL, just regular Large in the "normal" part of the store. It has probably been 15-20 years since I bought a size without an X in front of it.

Jenny here is my DD menu!
B- coffee with nondairy creamer and splenda (about 2-3 cups creamer has 10 cal per tsp.) 1 tsp per cup

L- 100 calorie popcorn bag diet coke, water

D- lean cuisine herb roasted chicken (180 cals)

Okay that leaves me about 150 cals, If I get hungry I have some salad greens already prepared, I'll use FF Italian dressing 15 cal per tbsp.

Trishagrrl-

If your doctor believes that you're OK simply because your blood values are in range, I suggest finding another doctor. Where hypothyroid is concerned, the lab values are simply a pleasant fiction. It's actually WHERE you are in the range that's significant. For example, when my T3 dropped to the lower tenth of the range, I was totally exhausted and gained 10 lbs in 2 weeks! My endo regulates my T3 to 2/3-3/4 of the range--which is where it's supposed to be. Similarly, he keeps my TSH at around 1.0. If it gets as high as 2.5 (well 'in range') I'm practically a basket case and can't lose weight at all. So you can be 'in range' and yet be in distress and need to have meds adjusted.

If you check out the thyroid section of these boards, you'll find that doctors who treat thyroid well are difficult to find. I know this from experience because I spent 5 years trying to get diagnosed while my primary physician kept telling me that I was fine because my labs were 'in range.' I was hypothyroid that entire time.

Okay, so am I the only brave soul to dare and expose my up day menu?
I wanna know what you all are eating?? down days are boring, but the
fun of all this are the ups. DO share!

Now, to vent..........So far, adding in (moderate) carbs has not served me well at all. The scale is bouncing around even more than ever and overall trend is pretty flat. I made a little daily graph just so I could look at patterns and I just keep treading over the same 3 lbs for 3 weeks now.
I did notice however, when looking at old diaries (I always keep one when I am
focused on dieting) and this 162-166 range is a KILLER for me to break thru.
It must be some sort of set point for me, cuz every time, it takes what feels like forever to get down to 160-162. I really don't want to go back to stricter (20 grams or less) low carb because I just don't think it is sustainable for the long haul for me, but I sure wish I could drop some pounds while still eating them. I know I am being impatient, but I really want this to work as a weight loss/lifetime WOE.

Morning JUDDers.
Welcome Laura... and congrats to all who are losing -WTG on ONEderland Janice! Awesome.

I had my typical. AWF Friday UD Saturday and sort of MD Sunday. Sunday Totals:
Calories 1,318
Fat 74.7 654 58 %
Carbohydrate 80.2 321 28 %
Dietary Fiber 7.1
Protein 41.4 157 14 %
Alcohol 0.0 0 0 %

It wasn't under 1000 like I wanted but it was also definately not an UD so that was good. I haven't shown any new fat loss for a coupla weeks. I'm with Michelle... I'm going to do my regular rotation until Saturday a.m. and if I don't see some loss by then I'm going back to true UD DD UD DD UD DD UD rotation.

snaggle, I have the SAME issue. How tall are you? I lost 20 lbs fast but have been bouncing around this same weight since February, and know that I always plateau here. Its a weight I maintained at for years and my body seems to remember it and try to keep. Once I get in the 150s things move along...well, at least they did the 3x (in the last 20 years!) that I have managed to do it. I am hoping/praying that JUDD combined with low carb and then adding in running/walking daily? Should be the tweak that changes this lifetime pattern for me...My body might think a size 14 is where I need to be, but my brain disagrees LOL. I've only been a size 6 once, but that was a pretty wonderful 18 months and I miss it!

Gina, that's great! It's such an awesome feeling to get into clothes that don't have an "X" in front of the size. I'm still working my way there. I'm in an XL right now. When I started this weightloss journey, I was wearing a tight XXL/22-24. Yesterday I wore a 16/18 blouse to church. I was elated! I know you must feel great! Congratulations!
