TWEAKERS united for May 09: JUDDD, Fast-Five, OSMF and other non-conformists

Welcome TWEAKERS! It's a new month - new thread.

I'm sitting in for Maizenbluebabe here, so instead of reinventing the wheel - I thought I'd just crib from her intro post last month...with a FEW tweaks for good measure.
___________
This first post is just a little welcome for our members and and a brief introduction for newcomers to what we are about here at Tweakers. The plans we follow (mentioned below) can be googled by name for further information and as well, we will be providing more details as we go along.

Spring is here -with Summer coming up right behind! The TIME is NOW - and it is a good time to get inspired to follow Dr Herring's Fast Five Intermittent Fasting, or Dr Johnson's Alternate Day Fasting (also known as the Johnson UpDayDownDayDiet (JUDDD) And if you want to follow those plans in a more straightforward way than we Tweakers do, there are two fine threads for that right here at Other Plans forum. One is called "JUDDD" and the other is "Intermittent Fasting" and they both have warmly supportive members who are always glad to help. They are easy to find--are usually right near the top of the page. And if you want to, you can join them, as well as this one. Do what works best for you!

We are probably a bit more free-wheeling than other threads because while we love both of those plans, we often combine them in unusual ways with other dietary ideas like low carbing and brief water fasting (also known affectionately to us as Other Sensibly Modifeid Fasts or OSMF's) And that desire to try new things is why we are called Tweakers.

Along the way, we always have time for a bit of lighthearted fun and some personal observations although we do (usually) try not to forget that our main focus is on weight loss.

OK, let's go! And let's all see at the end of the month what kind of progress we have made.toward our personal goals of weight loss, weight maintenance, and better health.

Happy May Day everyone! I'm very ready to start this month out right - and to kick some JUDDD butt before pool season hits here. (that's the closest I can get to a kick-butt emoticon) . So far so good though. I'm down another .5 lb despite a VERY late night dip into the peach cobbler. Now I really better watch my cals today or I'll be seeing that cobbler on the scale tomorrow or the next day.

On the downside, I'm on day 3 of pink eye. Not sure if it's allergy related or viral, but the antibiotic drops don't seem to be doing much. I will see the opthom on Monday if this is still going on. (Forget the discomfort - I feel downright naked without eye makeup and I have to go see waaaay too many people today.)

Kisha, I'm really curious about your progress since you started AWFs. Have you noticed better (faster ) results? Sorry if you've already addressed this earlier. I'm wondering if I really should just commit to 3 WFs a week instead of continuing this struggle with lo cal DDs. At least for a couple of weeks....

Hey EmandM - I've driven by that Wonderland and always thought it looked fun. You must live in/near Toronto and so, I'm insanely jealous. What a great city! We try to get there at least every couple of years. We've hit Buskerfest - which is a mind-blowing treat, and I've been threatening to go to the film fest for years now. At any rate, enjoy your dough! (yum...)

It's a gorgeous day here in the heartland. I need to go do some yard work to burn off the 3 pieces of homemade bread I ate for b-fast!

Happy May tweakers!

I had bad news from the endo this week. He feels Juddd is the reason my Bgl's are so unstable and says diabetidcs need to strive for very constant cals and macros on a day to day basis. Recommends 1500 cals daily spread evenly throughout the day and states if I really want to do some IF it should be fast 5 or a simple one day fast from time to time.

So this week I tried fast 5 and overate every single day - my body seemed to think it was UD everyday. I'm up 5 pounds and feeling rather defeated. Juddd was working perfectly for maintenance for me and moderation just doesn't work - I feel hungry all the time! Even zero carb doesn't work for appetite control for me. I may need to sew my mouth shut.

Very bummed out. So for now I'm going to try 2 more weeks of fast 5 and try to control cals and do VLC. If I keep gaining I'll reevaluate after 2 weeks.

Can I still hang out here with you tweakers? Any advice from experienced fast 5ers?

Sorry for the downer post.

Oh SS I am sorry you are so down and that your doc doesn't recommend JUDDD. You must be really disappointed. But I bet after a few weeks of Fast-5 or at moderate cals, you won't overeat. Psychologically you probably have that falling-off-the-wagon mentality and the lack of structure is getting to you. But once you get used to it you will be great, I know you will. And of course you are hanging out here, I wouldn't have it any other way!

Wallaby - yes, I grew up in Toronto, but now live a little further North. We have never been to Buskerfest, but my friend goes and loves it. We will have to give it a go. Wonderland is super fun, and we go a few times a year. My kids are at a great age for it too. Once they wake up from their nap we are heading over! Are you Canadian too? I forget.

JGW - thanks! Hope you have a great weekend too!

Shunsweets - So sorry about the news. I lost my 1st 8 lbs with Fast Five and my experience was that it took a week or 2 for my appetite to calm down. I overate at first, but then it calmed waayy down. I hope that helps.

SS, I'm sorry to hear this! How frustrating for you.

I don't recall if you had type 1 or type 2 - and I don't know how wildly your levels are varying - but when I read this post I remembered something in the NY times in the last year. Of course, this may not pertain to your case at all...

intro quote to article:
Two large studies involving more than 21,000 people found that people with Type 2 diabetes had no reduction in their risk of heart attacks and strokes and no reduction in their death rate if they rigorously controlled their blood sugar levels.

WALLABY! YOu are a tue friend! Great thread--LOVE the name!!! Love all the enthusiasm and good results, too.

Do NOT love hearing of the problems SS is having however. It is just NOT fair! We must all put our our heads together and find a way to help her with a WOE that helps with BG and hunger and maintenance--I cannot imagine our little world of Tweakers without her.

Well, I am exhausted from my long week of servitude. Dont know how I can do this for 2 more weeks but will take my vitamins and hope that helps. Hmmm, maybe a bottle of gin in the back room is in order. (It is the mental aspect of this that is driving me 'round the bend.

I MISS all of you--hope to be back soon if I can hold on to the few shreds of sanity that are left to me.

Wallaby Thanks for the link. I have used these exact studies with my Dr as my rational for staying off diabetes drugs. The way they agressively tried to get BGL's down was to add more and more drugs - no wonder tight BGL control was counter productive those folks were on multiple meds, Very little mention of diet. To me the only worthwhile diabetes med is insulin - when required. I control all symptoms with just diet.

And therein lies the problem not that the BGL's are unstable but that I'm symptomatic - lethargic, sleepy, sluggish with highs; shaky, weak, sweaty, faint and starving when low.
But I'll get it figured out. I'm relentlessly stubborn and will be slim and healthy and off meds.

Today I've done great. Just ate what will be my only meal - 1200 cals/5carbs - and I'm done. I'm using my DD mentality to gain portion control along with Fast 1 and it's starting to work. I may occasionally try a no meal just favorites day to have nut butter and cream so I can get in my treat and stay < 1500 cals. I'll tweak this darn body till I get it back in line and still enjoy food!

Meanwhile I pulled a tendon in my leg and can't jog for a few days - it never rains that it doesn't pour - but this too will pass.

So glad I have my tweaker buddies to vent with!

Maizen Hang in there. Think how much you'll appreciate retirement again when this is over.

Shell Thanks for the good wishes, You are my Fast5 inspiration - although I'm finding one meal Fast 1 style (thanks Kisha) helps me with portion control. I'm hoping my appetite calms down once my body adjusts to being off Juddd.

Hi EmandM, Janice, Kisha! Retro my friend, How are you? Share your current plan - we tweakers accept all plans!

Enjoy what is left of the weekend everyone!

Hello Ladies,

I have been looking for the place where IF people gather and I'm glad I found you. Nice to meet you all I have somewhat educated myself on IF and I feel I need to tweak it because of hypoglycemia issues. I will not be able to do the day on day off thing. What I am planning on doing is fast from 7 p.m. to 1 p..m the next day (18 hr. fast). It seems to work without me feeling woozy. If I drink coffee, then I don't feel any hunger at all.

I rarely ate breakfast for most of my life and did just fine. I notice that if I don't eat breakfast and have a small lunch my energy levels go up and I feel clear-headed.

Shun, my friend: I am just seeing this and am SOOOOO frustrated for you. I don't understand all the BGL/diabetes stuff, so bear with me here, but why is Fast 5 okay (and JUDDD isn't) if steady intake is what the doc says is required? Is it that the shorter-term hourly fluctuations are more tolerable than day-long ones? What if your DDs were altered and instead of doing just the 1 meal, you ate very lightly thruout the day, but with the lower caloric intake -- would that be a solution or does the calorie count each day need to be in range with the next?

You haven't had the BGL problems all along while JUDDDing, right? Did the Doc suggest that the cumulative effect of JUDDD is causing the problem?

Just asking questions/brainstorming in case there is some way to hang on to what had been working so well for you.
