Happy Tuesday everyone!
Today is a good day. I finally woke up very well rested. I have a 7 month old who has been struggling with a nasty cold and he finally let me sleep last night and boy did we sleep... about 12 hours! I made it through my first DD 490 calories. THe calculator on the website gave me 540, so i was happy I was able to come in under! It wasn't too bad... dinner and after dinner was the hardest. I tend to be a snacker after dinner, but I just kept telling myself that I could eat in the morning. It seems quite bizzare to me, but I stepped on the scale and am down 4 pounds... in one day? Granted, I'll probably be back up tomorrow after a day of eating. It seems like that should be water weight but I also seem to be retaining a lot of water right now. My ring is so tight on my finger I had to take it off this morning. I won't protest a weight loss even if it's not a true "fat" loss. It's just nice to see the scale go down instead of up these days :-) |

Down day was harder than I would have thought. 580 Calories consumed for the day.
Breakfast: 2 Eggs Lunch: Muscle Milk Light Snack: 12 almonds Dinner: Strawberry, Banana Smoothie (8 oz Unsweetened Almond Milk, 0 Carb Banana Protein, 5 Frozen Strawberries, 1 tsp Flax, 1 packet splenda) Beverages: 2 cups of coffee, bucket loads of water and 1 32 oz Powerade Zero (pretty good). I will need to bump that up a bit today so I started with a bigger breakfast than normal. 2 Eggs and 3 pieces of bacon. Seemed like a lot to eat. Will do a nice hearty salad for lunch with maybe some chicken salad. Not sure about dinner yet. Scale was at 203 today. |

Is there any advantage to eating this way opposed to eating about 1200 calories per day every day?

Jonah's Granny: Dr. Johnson, who is the author of the book we refer to Alternate Day Diet states that when you restrict calories for one day and eat normally the next the body produces a gene called SIRT1. This gene is supposed to speed up metabolism, and has number of other health benefits according to Dr. Johnson. You can find out more by accessing his website: Dr. Johnson Up Day Down Day Diet. |

Why does calorie restriction have such a positive effect on health and lifespan? In addition to activating the SIRT1 gene(skinny gene), daily calorie restriction can lead to weight loss and a reduction in body fat. A low body weight is considered to be the primary key to a longer life, and body fat is a primary cause of inflammation, disease, and premature aging. A number of studies show that thinner individuals with lower body mass indexes are more likely to have healthier hearts and a lower risk of cancer than heavier men and women. |

Hi Juddders. Today is my weigh in day and I have now completed 3 weeks of my
custom plan (see tweak thread) and am down 3 lbs. I know I should be happy but I am in a weight loss competition with my best friend (who is basically eating hardly anything) and I was hoping it would not be as slow as it usually is. 1 lb a week is actually pretty typical, or a little less than usual. I am truly hoping that what everyone says about it taking a while for the body to adjust. I am also eating a few more carbs than I did the week before I started the modified JUDDD plan. My overall calorie average is still 1100 per day and I am exercising a lot. My low days (did two the first two weeks and 3 last week) are always around 400 cal. Did any other of you find that losses sped up AFTER the first 3 weeks, or have they remained steady? |

remind me... are you CURRENTLY combining low carb with JUDD? While I eat alot more carbs on JUDD than I did on plain old Atkins I am certainly still low carb and I think it REALLY helps with hunger. |

Wow, wow, WOW! I'm down another 1.6 today (after 2 on my last DD). I am normally such a ssssslllloooowwww loser that this is amazing to me. I've lost more in the two weeks I've been JUDDDing that the four months before.
Snaggle, I lost right from the start with JUDDD, but week #3 started for me on Monday and it seems like I have really kicked it up a notch on the last two DDs. Jonah's Granny, I haven't read the book yet (it's in the mail), but I think the idea is if you eat low cal day after day your body starts to think it's starving and adjusts your metabolism down to meet your intake. I know that has happened to me before. There is a good explanation of how that works in Good Calories, Bad Calories if you want to read up on it. With cycling (like this and some other plans), you alternate low and high(er) so you don't go into the dreaded "starvation mode" and stop losing. UD for me today. I am not really hungry and I stood in my kitchen not even sure what to pack for lunch. So not like me. Have a great JUDDD day everyone!

Beyond the advantage of the SIRT1 gene mentioned by others I have personally found a great PSYCHOLOGICAL benefit to eating this way. Restricting calories one day at a time is so much easier than continually operating at a calorie deficit. I also have gained the greatest sense of control over my eating that I have ever experienced and gotten many new insights into hunger and my own eating habits/patterns. Quote:

UD for me today. I had a good clean AWF DD yesterday. No weight loss on the scale yet but that is typical as I recover from my no DD weekend. Its on Saturday a.m. that I expect to register a downward change. |

Hi y'all....I don't think I can JUDDD anymore....I majorly CRASHED yesterday. I'm not diabetic (pre-, but not full blown), but I had such a drop in my blood sugar that I got pale and sweaty and shaky WHILE DRIVING. Not good. If I am honest, I had issues on my other down days too, but nothing like yesterday. I just thought it would pass. But I think it scared me too much.
I'm really disappointed...I was hoping this would do the trick for me. But I will go back to low-carbing and watching calories. Thanks for your support....I'll keep track of you all through the tweakers thread. |

Jen-
Sorry this doesn't work for you. I read somewhere (don't remember where) that this plan CAN be bad for diabetics, and I guess that would apply to anyone close to diabetes with hypoglycemia. I remember that comment because my sister is diabetic, and I had been hoping to induce her to follow JUDDD. But I didn't bother after I read that because she doesn't need any other problems with her blood sugar. Low carb is the best WOE for anyone with blood sugar issues, and my endo credits my WOE for the fact that I don't have full-blown diabetes because my blood glucose went up significantly with hypthyroid. So sticking with low carb is the best thing you can do for yourself. |
Awesome Trishagrrl! (love your screen name) see where your weight is after three Down Days... I bet you show the loss as real!
Thanks.... and if I showed a 2 pound loss after a week I'd be totally thrilled. When I'm not nursing a 2 pound loss in a week is quite remarkable... when I am nursing its been quite impossible! |

Well I made it through my first DD yesterday with 496 calories. I would have never believed I could eat so little and feel okay. I saved most of my calories for dinner and that seemed to work out ok.
I did struggled just a little bit when I ended up getting home 2 hrs later than usual for dinner. I was so hungry and my first thought after getting into my car was "hey, let's drive by DQ and get an ice cream cone." That voice was really loud! But I was good and drove straight home and immediately fixed my spinach salad with a small amount of chicken and strawberries. I did save 100 calories for evening and had a choc protein shake which took care of my sweet craving.I'm down 4 lbs this morning like Trishagrrl. I know it's water weight as I was running to the bathroom all day & night but I'll take it. |

Gina (GME): Your success with JUDD is inspiring!
Kisha: I PM'd Clannad. On her last post she wasn't feeling well. Hope she's okay. Snaggle: There is another thread out there on the web for JUDD. I forgot the name, but they have about 400 posters (we're catching up fast!). I had read there people were experiencing accceleration and even some people's' fingernails were growing faster! On my Up Days when I eat, I can feel my metabolism speeding up, just like when I was a teenager. This is truly amazing. |

Hey, everybody. I thought I'd better check in today. Yesterday was an UD. It was also my daughter's 9th birthday. I did great but I decided to enjoy cake and icecream with her in the evening. I have been LCing for 5 months with very little of that stuff and today I have THE WORST HEADACHE!!! I know it is from eating refined, processed food. It is a good reminder of how "not really good" that stuff is.
Today is DD and I had some cabbage and bacon (cooked in 1T oil) for lunch). I'm having blackberries and cream for dinner. Like usuall, I'll probably go to bed fairly early and read myself to sleep. Tomorrow's UD is going to be LC food with extra vegies and berries...NO CAKE OR REFINED, PROCESSED FOOD FOR ME!!! I DON'T LIKE SUGAR HEADACHES!!!

Congratulations,
![]() batlou Trish (sweet baby pic) snaggle Brenda and Gina HEY! Wait a minute! Didn't I just congratulate Gina!? Wow you are doing so well. snaggle, this way of eating has proven to me that it's the most efficient at weight loss. (Except for your friend's idea of hardly eating at all! Hmmm) So if the "contest" is scale weight, I'd say you are on the best track you could be. Best wishes to you - a pound a week is formidable. ![]() Jen, take care of yourself. Thanks, Leo for reminding the up day # is a limit not a requirement. aim, how are you doing? Today is a Down Day I'd like to keep under 500 calories. So far, 249 at 3:30 p.m. Have had 3 pints of additional water. Must go back and find who suggested making 250-cal menu choices to choose between and say thank you. I like having a second, same-calorie meal to look forward to after making a big deal (napkin, silverware, tv program, LOL!) out of the first one. |

I'm on a blessed UD . But I'm trying to keep it light during the day because I have a ladies outing to go to tonite and that means goodies! ![]() I had a chocolate peanut butter egg cream for breakfast and lunch was a BLT salad. I splurged and had french catalina dressing on it. Snack will be a Carbmaster yogurt mixed with a little sf whipped cream. Congrats to you losers! I'm not weighing again until Thursday or maybe Saturday if I can hold out that long. I know one thing, my freshly washed jeans aren't taken as long to get loose on me during the day as they used to. Gotta love those NSVs, too! ![]()

Redeemed, I think you bring up an interesting point about metabolism on up days. I have been thinking about it and reading about metabolism. You know, I have been SO cold all the time, I think my metabolism has slowed. NOT GOOD. I think I am going to try and up my calories on my up day. I was trying to do it similar to LEO and keep up days around 1400/1500, but perhaps they should be more like DR. Johnsons chart shows and be closer to 2000. I shudder to think what the scale will show after those first few up days, but if it means I am stoking the fires of my metabolism, it will be totally worth it. I am in this for the long haul. The contest with my friend is kind of a joke anyway. It is just so
goofy because we weigh almost the same, but she is two inches taller. She is the heaviest she has ever been, whereas I am 40 lbs less than my high and have kept that off for almost 3 years. She is funny tho, she will eat a cucumber for dinner one night, then drink a whole bottle of wine the next. Not sure what the heck her plan is, but she will have nothing of my low carb/higher fat notions. |

Snaggle-
You might not have to raise calories consistently on your UDs. Here's what happened to me. About a month ago, I totally unintentionally overate on a Sunday--probably about 2800 calories--which is an enormous number for me. I cringed at what I assumed that would do to my loss, but that week (I weighed the following Saturday, as usual), I lost 3 lbs--more than I'd ever lost in a week. About two weeks later, I had a social event and similarly ate a lot, and the same thing happened--a big loss that week, too. Usually, I lose about a pound at a time. However, I think that if I actually raised my UDs to that number consistently, I'd gain. I think it's the occasional "feast" that stokes my body to burn fat. In any case, you might want to try it to see if your body reacts similarly. |
