Wow, Maryposa! You have lost an impressive amount of weight. Think of it this way: maybe your body is resting up before the next good loss starts!
![]() to our funny little Tweaker World--we will try almost anything as long as it isnt dangerous, ![]() Like your "namesake" you are a true Butterfly--flitting around until you find just the right place to land! ![]() Feel free to hit our successful members up for any thing you want to know. Several of us are doing LC or VLC. Shunsweets is doing that to maintain and I am doing that hoping to live long enough to be able to fit into that category myself. Not easy! EmandM is also maintaining and she is mostly vegetarian. Caramel is the one who got several of us interested in brief Water Fast or Almost Water Fast and Kisha uses that very successfully as well. Kisha started out with JUDDD in January and has used it, along with AWF and LC to create almost miraculous weight loss despite her hypothyroid condition. Michelle is very close to goal and she is now combining some aspects of JUDDD with Fast Five. So there is lots of inspiration here! ![]() Last edited by maizenbluebabe; 04-03-2009 at 04:47 PM.. |

I posted this last month and feel it is WELL worth repeating
AN IMPORTANT REMINDER (REVIEW) OF WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO. (Long but interesting and helpful.)
A compilation from an article in Elle magazine (May 06, 2008) by Ginny Graves ,..Alternate Day Fasting, has not only a growing fan base in the blogosphere (including Yahoo's 450-strong Intermittent Fasting chat room), but also adherents in the scientific community who suggest that fasting every other day may be a more lifestyle-friendly way to get the health benefits of intense, long-term calorie restriction (which has been shown to improve the longevity of everything from humans to rhesus monkeys)... ...Indeed, even Brian M. Delaney, president of the Calorie Restriction Society and author of The Longevity Diet (Marlowe & Company), admits, “Alternate-day fasting is appealing because it lets you focus hunger in manageable periods—instead of being a little hungry all the time, you're very hungry a little of the time.” While the comparative benefits of calorie restriction versus ADF have yet to be conclusively studied, the alternate-day version definitely fulfills some of the same promises, including weight loss: In a 2005 study by scientists at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, subjects lost an average of 2.5 percent of their weight and about 4 percent of their body fat after three weeks on the diet. Even more interesting, recent studies show ADF may activate a gene that's a potential key to good health and long life. . Fortunately, some ADF researchers and diet gurus—such as James Johnson, MD, and Donald Laub, MD, coauthors of The Alternate Day Diet (Putnam)—contend that a less draconian approach may offer nearly the same health benefits as every-other-day fasting, without making you chew-your-arm-off hungry. “Our study subjects said noneating days were hell,” says Eric Ravussin, PhD, coauthor of the Pennington study as well as a new one on modified ADF. “The only way to make the diet feasible was to add some calories on the 'off' day.” The reason the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is funding several studies on calorie restriction and ADF is what they do on a cellular level. In one of the first rigorous studies of the program, published in 2003, researchers at the National Institute on Aging tested ADF on mice who were trained to gorge when given free access to food; although the mice who ate nothing every other day were too gluttonous on their “on” days to lose any weight, they still exhibited the same positive health changes—increased insulin sensitivity and stress resistance, and longer life span—as those who lost weight by constant calorie restriction. “Scientists had always attributed the positive changes of calorie restriction to weight loss, but here were mice who didn't lose weight and they still were healthier,” Ravussin says. [Editorial note from MBB: fortunately WE are not mice, we have the gift of Reason, and can make choices based on knowledge rather than just wanting to eat gluttonously] ...Researchers say semistarving every other day places just enough stress on the body to trigger the activation of the SIRT1 gene, the same one that's switched on when you consume resveratrol, the antioxidant in red wine that may explain the French paradox—the fact that Parisians don't have high rates of heart disease despite their heavy consumption of bernaise and béchamel. In The Alternate Day Diet, Johnson calls SIRT1, which all humans possess, “the skinny gene” because there's evidence it not only prompts cells to release fat into the bloodstream for use as energy, but also turns off another gene, PPAR-gamma, that is responsible for fat storage. “With PPAR-gamma in off-mode, the body doesn't store fat as easily; instead of storing it, you metabolize it,” he says. Indeed, a few studies have shown that animals that eat every other day increase their lean body mass and reduce body fat. “More muscle means a faster metabolism, which means you will use calories more quickly,” Johnson says. According to Krista Varady, PhD, a scientist at the University of California at Berkeley, both ADF and modified ADF may also reduce cancer risk by decreasing cell proliferation. “We're conducting a study of modified ADF to see if the results hold up in people, but there is some evidence from other research that they will,” Varady says. “For instance, studies in people have shown that insulin levels decrease after several weeks on the plan.” Eating less every other day—even just 50 percent of your usual calories, whether your “usual” is 1,200 or 4,000—may improve longevity. But if weight loss is the goal, Johnson advocates eating about 20 percent of your usual calories on the “down” day. During “on” days, he says, there is no strictly prescribed calorie count—consume whatever you want (though, logically, he suggests sticking to healthy diet standards: fruits and veggies, lean protein, and whole grains). Johnson himself lost 35 pounds in 11 weeks on the diet; he's kept it off since 2003 by limiting “off” day calories to roughly 1,300, half his usual 2,600. Surprisingly, “most people eat just 10 percent more than usual on their 'on' days,” says William Troy Donahoo, MD, medical director of weight management at Kaiser Permanente in Denver, which is conducting an ongoing study of true ADF, funded by the NIH. “You think you'll pig out, but you really don't compensate, calorie-wise.” As for what to eat on low-calorie days, Johnson recommends starting with calorie-counted energy bars or weight-loss drinks. “But you still need to be prepared to endure some hunger,” he says. “Four hundred calories will never produce satiety.” According to John Daugirdas, MD, a kidney specialist and author of The QOD Diet: Eating Well Every Other Day (White Swan Publishing), salt is key. “We're used to taking in so much sodium that when we eat less—and therefore consume less salt—we feel weak and washed-out,” he says. To obtain what he considers the bare minimum “off” day nutrients—1,500 milligrams of sodium, 2,000 of potassium, and 300 of calcium—Daugirdas suggests sodium-heavy canned tomato juice, plus several mini meals of vegetables and a little protein: an egg white, half a slice of cheese, or his secret weapon, olive-oil-packed sardines. “They have lots of protein and healthy fat to stave off hunger,” he claims."... END OF ARTICLE The last paragraph has provided me with some new and interesting--and useful--information which we might all benefit from by reading carefully, and considering if we fit into his remarks about sodium intake/sodium cutting. the above post contains almost everything we need to know about WHY to do Alternate Day Fasting (JUDDD) and also HOW to do it. Re-reading this article has renewed my understanding of JUDDD and also my commitment to it.
Once we understand what it can do for us (also Fast five has the same advantages) then it is easier to value this plan as a very useful WOE and WOL and becomes easier to stick to it even when weight loss is slow or we think we feel hungry. The truth is I am never "stomach hungry" on my DD--like Kisha says, it becomes "mouth hunger" ( or in my case, and some others, it is actually a case of "head hunger". ) Once we become used to eating this way, the DD's become much easier and Kisha and Caramel are proof of this with their successful Liquid Fasts which contain no--or very few--calories. 18 - yay! Thanks so much for the reminder about the nutritional info. I did check it out and I managed to have a McDonalds meal for around 400 cals! I had 4 McNuggets and small fries. Hi Maryposa and I hope you find great success with this woe. Post often so we can get to know you! I think the biggest surprise for me (and I started following JUDDD in Nov) was that I didn't eat my entire refrigerator on my UD's. I think the first few UD's I indulged a bit because I "could" but that tapered off very quickly. I would go to bed after DD's dreaming of cakes and donuts, and wake up the morning of UD and not be hungry until lunch. There is something about that SIRT1 gene!MBB - I am like you, I always have head hunger on DD's. I have yet to do a WF or a AWF, but at this point, I don't think I will attempt to try. I'd just be setting myself up for failure! I really admire those who can do it! ![]() SS - your run sounds great! I love the little ducks and geese that are appearing more with the thaw. We are getting our fence put in over the next few weeks, so we will be spending many an evening out in the yard playing and bbq-ing in the upcoming months! Yay Spring (although we are set for snow in the forecast next week, always happens in April and then it should be DONE)! ![]() |

You inspire me to get outside more, too, now that the weather is becoming so nice After our 4 day rain finally ended yesterday, I looked out the living room window and discovered we were living in the Land of Oz. OH MY LORD!
![]() I got up from my desk just now and found that while I had been doing e-mail and Tweaking, I had been left a gift. My cat Sweetie Pie (she is a fluffy tabby, my true FurBaby and I adore her) had been up on my lap and trying to help me type a few minutes ago and purring like crazy and looking intently into my face. The reason why: a dead mouse is right behind my chair. At least she didnt put it still alive on the bed in the middle of the night like my DH's cat Sylvester has done several times. ![]() Last edited by maizenbluebabe; 04-04-2009 at 05:18 AM.. |

I have 2 cats. One is a pampered, affectionate lap cat that never goes outside (wouldn't care to get her paws damp!). The other I adopted from the shelter and he is a wild boy. Refused to become a house cat, literally tore the screens and tripped people coming in to get outdoors and is basically half feral (it's a 2 day effort to catch him each year and get him to the vet for shots. We had him neutered when we got him 12 years ago - it made no difference). He is completely black and has scratched and bitten all of us, but he's mine and I take care of him. He takes care of me with frequent "gifts" he leaves on the front porch and announces with the loudest meowing I have ever heard! Mice, rats, bunnies, squirrels, birds, and yes snakes all appear regularly at my door - some of them bigger than he is - and he has no front claws as I had him declawed in front in my early efforts to make him a housecat and protect us all from bloody scratches. Not sure I love his gifts but it shows me that as much as I have claimed him, he has claimed us and is providing for his "family". Cats are such wonderful creatures!
Weekly weigh in. Holding steady at 109. All stats right where they should be despite a couple of very fatty UD's (I still think I'm one of those gluttonous mice that Maizen's article mentions.) JUDDD + VLC continues to work perfectly for weight maintenance for me. I have some BGL issues but that's a different problem. Exercised 4miles jogging X 6 days this week. I take Sats off to give the whole day to DH as it is our one day off together and I think it's good to give the body a day off. Greetings to all. Enjoy the weekend! |

Good morning everyone--it is so gorgeous here today! I hope it is wherever you are. it is way too nice to stay inside today. (But there is a chance of snow tomorrow according to our wacko weather man,
![]() )I wont be around much the nexxt couple of weeks due to company but I shall be Tweaking away anyhow. I had FABULOUS UPDAY yesterday combined with Very Low Carbs and lost a few ounces. Today is of course, a DD and I am ready for that, too with plans for lots of water. My bedtime reading the past night or so has been Dr Herring's Fast Five and I will soon be combining it with JUDDD and lowcarbing. He has some really impressive ideas/information about fat metabolism and I remember how well it worked for me two years ago to do this (one reason I wanted to include Fast Five in our thread as well as JUDDD) (For those who can do Fast Five and combine it with sensible food intake, it is a great plan and Herring explains the whole thing clearly in his book just as Dr Johnson does in his. Together, they both have me convinced that Intermittent Fasting of some kind is really the pathway to good health not just weightloss. On FF,the windows I chose were always 1Pm to 6 PM or 2 PM to 7--or if a social evening with later dinner, from 3 to 8 (but the latter complication didnt happen very often, thank goodness.) I still havent added planned exercise to the equation, but I run up and down our stairs a million times a day so that probably helps. Since I dont feel the need to eat breakfast, this worked fine for me. It means giving up my morning decaf because I cant do it without cream and that loads me up too high on calories DD, but I manage fine on water. OK, EmandM, we are waiting for a report on the DD's dance lesson experience shunsweets, you are reallly an inspiration for both WOE and exercise. KUTGW! ![]() ![]() OK, I am off to do some very necessary and neglected chores around here and then have some fun and I hope all of you are doing the same! Good Morning Tweakers!
Maryposa! Glad you are here.We are back from camping and had alot of fun. I had my first down day on Friday and it was alot easier than I thought it would be. I am sure it's because I am pretty used to IF since I have been doing Fast Five. I didn't get to weigh myself yesterday, since I was camping. I had my first Upday yesterday and hit my calories pretty dead on. This morning I weighed myself and I was 125.6 AFTER an upday. I told my DH that can't be right....lol. AFTER an upday I am almost at my all time low. I am pretty excited about that. Today, is a moderate day for me, which will end up being around 900 calories. I am so excited about JUDDD. I can't believe I didn't do this earlier. I am keeping my DD's as Fast Five, as that will help control my appetite. My first Upday I started eating when I woke up as I think that will be the only way to get in 1800 calories. Okay, I will stop rambling now. I will check in later. Happy Tweaking everyone!! ![]()

Michelle! Fantastic! Keep it up and watch the pounds disappear.
I am taking a break from all this Spring Cleaning to come and sit and Tweak for a few minutes and then back to work. Well, after my UpDay yesterday, I will be breaking my fast a la Dr Herrining when I finish here .But the surprising thing is that I am at 169.3 right now which means I lost almost 3 pounds this past week since I bounced up at end of week before this past one from sheer carelessness. (About a pound of it was yesterday AN UPDAY! Go figure! ![]() So this will be my first day of doing Fast Five and JUDDD (500 calories) and using some low carb as well. Tomorrow morning's weight should be interesting to say the least. I have absolutely no hunger at all and a bit ago took a Ketostick out of a cool place where I keep them in our basement (makes them last longer and I dont use them very often.) and it was deep shade of pink. So I am beginning to produce ketones. Atkins and others say not to think it has to be purple or any really deep shades--and once you have the first ketones oout of your system and are seriously burning fat, you usually dont even show any in your urine even when you are really burning fat. And in fact, drinking lots of water--after the initial stage--thins them out so that they often dont even show up much at all . OK, guys see you later tonight or tomorrow. ONWARD TWEAKERS- -INTO THE MELTING POT WE GO!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by maizenbluebabe; 04-05-2009 at 09:54 AM.. |

Hi everyone!
Michelle - great job! KUTGW! i try and do a Fast-1 for my DD's, but have to expand my window now that my DD cals are higher. MBB - Isn't it weird to have no hunger? Today is DD for me, and it's 2:00 and I have not had a hunger pang yet. So strange! So I have officially seen the cutest thing ever. 8 little girls between the ages of 3-4 during a ballet "performance." The parents aren't allowed to stay during the dance class (too distracting for the kids) but we are invited back for the last 5 minutes of class to see what they have learned. I thought I would physically burst with all the pride welling up inside of me. My little girls did so well, but they looked so happy, and that is all that counts! ![]() ![]() As for me, I am amazed at my progress this week. I had two UD's in a row (planned as that's what this tweaker does). Friday and Sat were UD's. Today I weighed in at 116. So, I have increased both DD calories and UD calories and lost a pound from last week. GO figure. I'm not complaining though! Still waiting for the shoe to drop, but I will be happy at increased cals at this weight! I love JUDDD! |

it seems like this ought to work if you can do it. with 2 or 3 WF's per week since this means you will be cutting your calories overall per week anyhow--which is what Dr Johnson first tried when he was developing JUDDD. The only reason he switched his program to very low calories one day and "normal" the next is that most peeps couldnt tolerate going without food totally for a day. Looks like you ate a lot on your UpDay, but in the end it wont matter if your DD calories are either zero and very very low.I dont usually count calories on my UpDays either since I know I eat pretty sensibly then. I try to keep track of the DD's much more carefully and because I am insulin resistant, I eat very low carb. EVeryone have a good day. I am going to be off on errands and then more cleaning and yardwork so might not be back until tonight or tomorrow. . TTYL Sally |

Oooops, forgot to mention my good news. Down .2 this morning but even better yet, lost another half inch off my waist! So I am burning fat and that is sooo good! I will be doing Fast Five again today and will have my first calories at 1. It's an UpDay so good stuff is in store--break fast will be some eggs and bacon and decal with WC and then shrimp and scallops cooked in butter for dinner with a little bit of romaine salad on the side. Ahhhhh.
OK, now I am off to town and everyone at least try to be good, please. And when Dasiey gets back, we all need to take our Goodness Pills so she doesnt lead us astray. I do worry about her friendship with the Trapeze Artist, though, and certainly hope he doesnt try to talk her into joining his high wire act. (Hmmm, she rides her bike a lot lately, do you suppose she is in training for a life in The Circus?) Good Morning Tweakers!
Still holding at 125.6 after my moderate day yesterday. I am not complaining, but I am ready to see some downward movement. Today, is my second DD. My stomach is already growling but nothing I can't handle. I will not be eating till later on in the afternoon. I am hoping after some exercise today and my DD, I MIGHT see a lower number tommorrow. I have my fingers crossed. I will check in later. Michelle |

Good morning everyone. I am doing a DD after a UD Saturday and Mod day Yesterday. I'm kind of looking forward to today. Just coffee so far as of yet. I am going to try a fast until this evening to save my calories for dinner with the family. Just calorie free or very low calorie liquids today until I get home. Got my oatmeal which is about 120 calories if I get too hungry before I leave work, but will eat only in a emergency. Wish me luck!
Have a great day! |

New Day Rotation Schedule
I have not been succeeding on the true rotation schedule I've been attempting. That second weekend day always gets me! So I'm starting a new schedule:
M: DD T: UD W: DD Th: UD Fr: DD Sat: UD Sun: MD (1200 cals) If I can stick to UD 2000 cals and DD less than 400 my daily caloric average will be 1200 which I have been able to lose with since starting JUDD. First MD yesterday went great and came in at 1200 cals despite eating TWO small chocolate chip cookies that my roomate made! |

Hi everyone! I just started JUDDD last week and have been posting on that board but thought I would mark my spot here also. I have not been perfect with this WOE because of some health issues last week but today is a new day and a DD for me. I love the freedom that I feel with this WOE. I cannot explain it but it seems to have lifted a lot of the stress I was feeling from trying to stay Low carb and Low calorie all of the time. I was on steroids last week so I told myself I would not weigh until Wed. so that my body had time to flush the water weight. However I feel really good and that is 3/4 of the battle with any WOE.
