Well I always look at it the Juddd way I can have cream tomorrow.
On my DD I try to stay under 400 calories. Not much room for cream.

I can ONLY drink coffee black, and it's the saving grace for me because I LOVE my coffee! It's so nice that it's zero calories--and something I love.

I also drink tea plain, and that's what keeps me going on DDs--cups of hot green tea throughout the day (I only drink coffee in the morning for some reason).

Thank you guys!
**Janice - good luck to you on your DD. The green bean idea is a good one!

**Clanad - For a chocolate pudding or brownie type of thing have you ever tried mixing a scoop of chocolate protein powder with an egg and water? Zap it in the microwave until it starts to set up. Not too long or it will get rubbery. I use one scoop of designer whey, 1 egg, 2 packets splenda and 1/3 cup water. It comes in at 170 calories and it is really quite good. I have also added some extra cocoa if I want a good dose of chocolate. The consistency varies with how long you cook it and I recommend taking it out while it is still runny because it continues to set up after cooking.

One more question. Someone mentioned the spiritual aspect of fasting. Do you all find there to be a spiritual connection with this WOE? I was raised Catholic and we fasted at certain times during lent (aside from the Friday lental meat fast). The subject just sparked my curiousity.

Hee, hee, here ya go ...

Low Cal Low Carb Brownies
This wasn't super sweet (just sweet enough for me), so you may want to add more sweetener.

* 2/3 cup whole wheat flour (I used white whole wheat flour)
* 1/3 cup carob powder (sub cocoa powder here)
* 2/3 cup erythritol
* 1/2 teaspoon stevia powder
* 1 tablespoon nonfat dry milk powder (optional ... not sure it did much)
* 1 teaspoon baking powder
* 1/2 cup water
* 3/4 cup egg substitute (egg beaters)
* 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, carob powder, dry milk, sweeteners and baking powder.
2. In a separate bowl, thoroughly mix remaining ingredients.
3. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix well.
4. Pour into lightly greased 8 inches square cake pan.
5. Bake in 350F oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until edges pull away from pan.
6. Let cool on rack. Cut into 16 pieces. Yummo!

4.1 carbs
.6 fiber
39 calories
4 fat
2.3 protein

For me, the fasting helps to keep my head clear so I can focus on more important things. And when I do the liquid fast (protein shakes), I don't have to think about food at all and I can just let it go. When I first did the fasts, I gained a stronger appreciation of how food nourishes my body and gives me energy. And am much more aware of how grateful I am for what I have to eat. I'm not sure how spiritual that is, but it is where I am at right now.

DD for me today. I had one serving of cream of wheat hot cereal with Mornin' blackberry syrup and coffee so far (130 calories). The green bean idea is a good one 40 cal. cup). I'll bring a turkey sandwich (140 cal.) with my low calorie bread - and bottle of V8 juice (70 cal.) - for work tonight. I'll have a tangerine toward the end of my shift. I may mash the green beans and use them for a dressing on my turkey sandwich.

420 calories

I hope everyone has a nice weekend. I'll either be working or at church listening to our guest speaker Fri. & Sat. night. So, I probably won't post until next week.

When I have a few days off, I'm going to be making batches of vegetable soup and freeze some for DD's.

Dasiey:

Which do you think is contributing most to your very impressive loss -- JUDDD, or your Zero/VLC eating?

Had you gone VLC before JUDDD? Had you had any success with that alone?

Thanks,

I can totally understand that. Thanks for sharing. What I like about drinking shakes is the freedom from food. It just makes things so easy and like you mentioned it is a break from thinking about food and what to eat, how many calories, carbs etc.

My fist DD went pretty good. I planned on having 500 calories and ended up at 650. The only hard part was between 3 and 5. I was so hungry and just wanted to nosh on something. I had some chicken broth and held on for dear life. After that it was not bad at all. This was my menu:
B: 1 egg, 1 piece of lean ham, 1 TBSP low carb katchup
L: 1 hard boiled egg, salad with vinegar and oil dressing, tomato and celery
S: 1 hard boiled egg (yes I love eggs), cup of chicken broth
D: 4 oz chicken breast and half a cooked carrot

Have to say I am glad tomorrow is an up day!

Good morning and Happy Friday everyone, I made it through my DD without problems. I truly think the green beans helped me a lot this time because I munched on them when I got hungry. Took in about 500 cals yesterday.
Today's my UD and I really was not too hungry this morning but had my usual coffee and creamer also a small bowl of cereal and a few grapes.
Talk later!

Great job on your DD yesterday homestretch and Janice!

I too have met my post vacation goal of getting off all of the up bounce in weight and down to a new low low of 195 yesterday morning. My upcoming goals are a modest 1 LB per week (of course that is not modest for ME - its actually a bit ambitious). Today is DD for me and I will be doing a liquid fast again... the more of them I do the easier they become. I have my coffee with 1/2 and 1/2 or just whole milk and a low carb canned protein shake if I need it.

Happy JUDDing ladies!

1. Do you get very hungry on your down days?
2. Do you really feel that you have increased energy?
3. How is your weight loss? avg pounds per week?
4. Do you exercise along with this WOE? (I exercise 4-5 days a week)
5. Dou you get headaches on your down days?
Thanks in advance if you take the time to answer me!
1. Yes you do get very hungry on down days, ESPECIALLY at first. you sort of get used to it after 2 weeks or so, but I still find I need to drink lots of hot tea and VLcalorie veggie soups or broth and lots of plain lettuce in my salads to fill the belly. One trick that REALLY works, I've found, is using a metamucil 'smoothie' to fill the belly. I end up doing about 3 servings (1 TBSP) of SF Metamucil every down day. I find now that I've been on JUDDD a while that I don't really get hungry till about 4pm. So I save the majority of my DD calories for after that time, if I can possibly help it and tell myself that the hunger I do feel right before bed is a signal that my body is having to go to fat to meet its energy requirements.

2. I definitely have increased energy and better sleep patterns. Started about 3 weeks into JUDDD.

3. I started January 1, so I've been on for 86 days, or about 12 weeks. I started at a bouncy 178-184 (my weight would fluctuate wildly between those two numbers), but my official starting weigh in was 178.

I've lost 10 pounds to date on JUDDD, for an average of 8/10 of a pound a week. But I've also gone down from a very tight 14 to a comfortable 12 and lost about 4 inches in my chest. The weight loss looks more like 15-20 pounds than 10 pounds.

You've also got to keep in mind that on any other weight loss plan, for me, a loss of 5/10 of a pound is enormous, so this is making me lose faster than average.

4. I don't excercise - I was in a car wreck about 5 days into JUDDD, and am just now ready to roll into excercise. However I scale my calories on the jUDDD calculator to reflect that. You're going to want to scale your calories to reflect it as well. If you cheat and try to claim less activity than you do, you'll send your body into starvation mode; and if you claim more you won't lose at an optimum rate.

5. I got headaches at first, but after the first few days that stopped. I actually get FAR fewer headaches in genral on this WOE than I've had my whole life.

I just eat to hunger. I don't worry about calories. I know you lose faster if you stick to the reccommended max UD limit, but I find I generally stick to it without trying - it's rather high - and sometimes I don't want to eat ALL of the calories, while other days I eat more. So letting myself have a free pass on those days seems to be working.

I also don't calculate macros on those days - so whatever protein fat and carbs I want, I eat.

The bolded items I've specifically noticed in my life - the more I practivce this WOE, the more these are manifesting in other areas of my life.

Well, you guys have got me hooked! Here's my thing: 69 years old, 5'2", 165 lbs. I walk 3xwk and do some light resistance. I don't lose generally on 1200 cals a day and just "failed" Nutrisystem. Have tried Atkins but can't just stay on so much protein and veggies alone. Have to add some carbs at least once a day. SO, I am back to eating only when hungry, and doing JUDD seems to be a good alternative. On weekends my DH is home from being on the road, and I plan to have two UD's while attempting not to get too high in cals. I want to keep my carbs at 80 or less and see if this can work for me. I am pretty sedentary and pretty stressed from financial issues so my food is the usual comforting factor. In any case I know how to maintain my weight but simply can not lose without going under 1200 cals/day. Experts say not to but I know my body won't respond with daily higher levels. Any advice from out there??

HI Suze! Welcome to JUDD. It has been the answer for alot of us sister slow losers. Wether due to meno, hypOthyroid, IR... or whatever reason I think the consensus is that we CAN lose on this WOE and lose faster than on other WOE.

Recommendations? I suggest getting yourself quick over to the JUDD website (you can google it) and using their calculator to come up with your DD and UD calories. If its not too late try making today your first DD then do two UD on Sat Sun, you can set M W F as your always DD. OR you can try your first DD on Monday... do M W F DD and two UD on Sat Sun.

Dr. Judd recommends using shakes for DD your first two weeks so go ahead and pick one out for yourself then calculate how many you can drink within your DD calorie limits... be sure to take into account any other calories you may intake from cream in coffee etc.

Keep in mind that the first few DD are BY FAR the hardest. Many of us had several false starts before succesfully getting a few under our belts.

You CAN do it. This WILL work. Good Luck! And please keep posting.

Here's my reccommendation, based on Doctor Johnson's calculator:

Go for an UD limit of 1600 calories and a DD limit of 485 calories. This is 30% weight loss mode. Here's what it looks like:

M - DD 485 calories
T - UD 1600 calories
W -DD 485 calories
TH -UD 1600 calories
F DD 485 calories

S - UD - 1600 calories
S - UD - 1600 calories
This gives you a total daily average of: 1043 calories

As you can see this is far below the 1200 calorie average you need.

You can also be stricter and go for 20% DD, which brings you to DD calories restricted to 322 calories while keeping UDs the same:
M - DD 322 calories
T - UD 1600 calories
W -DD 322 calories
TH -UD 1600 calories
F DD 322 calories

S - UD - 1600 calories
S - UD - 1600 calories
This gives you a total daily average of: 961 calories

I warn you: This strict is going to be hard to maintain long term!

Another creative solution (yes, a tweak, ladies!), taking into consideration your hubby, is to take those extra 163 calories per DD and put them on the two concurrent UDs, effectively creating one or two 'free pass' days, where you don't really need to worry about what you eat at all. This will still leave a daily average of 1043 and will give you some leeway. here's what it looks like, if you take 2 super up days:

M - DD 322 calories
T - UD 1600 calories
W -DD 322 calories
TH -UD 1600 calories
F DD 322 calories

S - SUPER UD - 1845 calories
S - SUPER UD - 1845 calories

Still an average of: 1043 calories, but you'll feel like you're 'cheating' while still losing weight- it's a great feeling!

The variation of this tweak would be to keep the Super Up Day to only one day a week

M - DD 322 calories
T - UD 1600 calories
W -DD 322 calories
TH -UD 1600 calories
F DD 322 calories

S - SUPER UD - 2089 calories
S - SUPER UD - 1600 calories

Once again, this is still an average of 1043 calories.

Don't get yourself freaked out by UDs - look at the TOTAL DAILY AVERAGES above. Most of us here are hypothyroid in some way shape and form, and we're losing weight on this WOE, even with UDs... even with going over our daily limit on UDs, in some cases.

Suze-

You've received a lot of good suggestions, and I want to address your concern about # of calories. I'm post-menopause and hypothyroid and simply can't lose unless I eat no more than 1000 calories a day, preferably lower. I KNOW that the conventional wisdom is that this is too low, but my endocrinologist agrees that my metabolism is so slow that I won't be able to lose on any more calories. So don't worry about going below 1200.

I've been on JUDDD since the end of December and have lost 17 pounds. That may not seem like a lot, but I was NOT losing with just low carb because of the frustration of trying to keep my calories so low--I'd wind up overeating eventually. With JUDDD that hasn't been a problem, even though I watch my calories on UDs too. Eating 400 cal. on DDs, makes my 12-1400 calorie UDs feel like a feast!

I, too, have consecutive UDs on Sat. and Sun, mainly because I keep M, W, F as my DDs all the time. I try to eat less on one of those weekend days, but I'm rarely successful.

My trick on DDs is to eat as much protein as I can, and I drink a lot of hot tea during the day.

I hope you give JUDDD a try because I think it's amazing.
