Weather here is BEAUTIFUL!
seventies all week and sunny.

I had another big UD yesterday. I don't know WHY I cannot keep these under 2000 calories!

Calories 2,355
Fat 195.5 1,705 73 %
Carbohydrate 69.7 273 12 %
Dietary Fiber 16.4
Protein 92.6 368 16 %
Alcohol 0.0 0 0 %

Its high on carbs too> I shouldn't be going over 50. *sigh* another bounce up on the lovely scale this morning too! ugh.

Aiming for AWF DD today.

awww kind! You'll be ok. Thats the beauty of this WOE. You just start fresh with a new day. I recently took four days off and it took less than a week to get rid of the bounce up. You can do it!

Salad dressing result--

You were all so helpful in my quest for a homemade DD salad dressing that I thought I'd share my result.

Keep in mind that my priority was to use only things I had in the house, and since I am alone, I don't keep much in the house (to avoid temptation and spoilage).

Also keep in mind that I didn't measure--all is approximate.

I had only a small amount of balsamic vinegar in the bottom of the bottle--probably less than 1/4 of a cup. To that I added about a cup of water, and about 3 heaping T of brown mustard, and the same amount of chopped garlic.
Then I put in about a T of soy sauce. I mixed it all up and let it 'rest' in the fridge.

I considered adding some red pepper flakes, but when I tasted this concoction, it was spicy enough, and I was afraid to ruin it. I considered adding the teaspoon of olive oil that had been suggested, but it seemed fine as is (and I get obsessive about calories on DDs:-)

I've had the salad, and this dressing was just fine. I prefer my usual oil and vinegar, but I'll save that for UDs. It's nice to know that I can create a DD dressing without buying a commerical product with all those additives (I tend to be sensitive to a lot of that stuff and am trying to avoid).

Thanks again for all your suggestions. When I go to the supermarket, I'll get some of the other items mentioned for future "creations."

Hi everyone
I have been reading a lot of different threads lately on IF, carb cycling etc. and today I ran across this one. I have to say that I think it is really interesting. I have had trouble sticking to plan lately and am in search of finding something that fits me. It is funny because I kind of do this now. I typically have Atkins shakes with one reg meal 2-3 times a week because it is just easy. I was very active on the Atkins shake routine board for a long time but it kind of died off. I have a few questions about this WOE:
1. Do you get very hungry on your down days?
2. Do you really feel that you have increased energy?
3. How is your weight loss? avg pounds per week?
4. Do you exercise along with this WOE? (I exercise 4-5 days a week)
5. Dou you get headaches on your down days?
Thanks in advance if you take the time to answer me!

JGW- Overcast here in Minnesota - even had some snow flakes
Leo - So glad your salad turned out.
Kind - Glad you're back and on the wagon with us.

This is the first time I have had two UD's in a row. I have been struggling with an upper respiratory since recovering from the flu. I wanted to have my homemade chicken noodle soup, and orange juice. So that's why I gave myself another UD. I think my DD's are going to contain more soups with vegetables in them so I can build up more resistance to all the viral crud that keeps coming around.

1. For me, personally, yes I get hungry on DD's. However, it's easier now than the first couple of DD's.
2. I feel I have a little more energy.
3. and 4. Weight loss is consistent - a little over a pound a week. Some do better because they exercise and watch their parameters for calories closer than I do.
5. I have not had any headaches.

I'm sure you are going to get varied responses - you'll also notice the individual approach to JUDD that makes these threads so special.

Hi Homestreach,

Here's my answers to your questions:

Quote:
1. Do you get very hungry on your down days? Sometimes. At first they were much harder but now they are easier. Mostly its mouth hunger though not true hunger. There are lots of low carb low cal foods that can be eaten on down days. I mostly only get hungry if I am dong a liquid fast on that day.2. Do you really feel that you have increased energy? I feel that I sleep much better and wake up much better rested.3. How is your weight loss? avg pounds per week? About one LB per week lately - this is ALOT for me as I am hypothyroid and do NOT have a normal metabolism.4. Do you exercise along with this WOE? (I exercise 4-5 days a week) I do not exercise but many people do.5. Dou you get headaches on your down days? Have never had a headache from this plan. I have only ever had a headache in my life when I didn't drink caffeine or when i was sick. Thanks in advance if you take the time to answer me!

Hey there everyone! Having a DD today. So far it is good, not feeling any hunger. So I guess it is getting easier.

jgw- It is a gorgeous day over here! It is approaching the 60's (I'm in the northeast) and it feels so nice and warm in the sun.
Leo - Your dressing looks delish! I'm interested in homemade dressings too. Please post other recipes as you come up with them.
Kind - Hello! You've been so good about your plan. Those 4 lbs. will be off in no time.
Kisha - Good luck with your AWF today!
Redeemed - Hope you feel better soon.

Homestretch - Hello!
1. I did very much in the beginning, but it seems to be much less now.
2. I am starting to feel I have a little more energy. But I am having issues with sleep, so it is hard for me to tell right now.
3. I'm on my third week of JUDDD ... the loss in consistent. I've lost 4.5 lbs. so far.
4. I try to make sure I exercise on the UDs, usually I do harder workouts. On DDs I rest or do lighter exercise, walks, hikes or I go easy on the elliptical.
5. I got headaches the first week, but not anymore.

Homestretch--

I've been doing JUDDD since the end of December and have lost a total of 17 pounds, not at an even number each week but steadily. That's amazing because I am post-menopausal and hypothyroid, so my metabolism is very slow and I have to seriously restrict calories. That's easier with JUDDD than trying to eat <1000 cal daily. That said, here are my responses to your queries:

1. Yes, I sometimes get hungry on DDs, but it's a "nice" hunger--i.e., I feel kind of empty but without a strong desire for food, almost a clean feeling. If I get enough protein, the hunger is less. I began with shakes on DDs, but I've tried to eliminate artificial sweeteners because they make me hungry, so although I want to continue with some shakes (best way to get more protein), I just got a brand that has no AS (and no taste!); I plan to add things like pumpkin or berries for taste.

2. At first I didn't notice any change in energy (no less or more), but recently I've felt more energy.

3. I've answered weight loss above, but it's important to note that although I had lost significant weight just low carbing and counting calories over the past several years (very slowly), during 2008, I'd lost and gained the same 10 lbs over and over. JUDDD has been the answer to this; I'm losing again for the first time in a year.

4. I usually swim laps 3 days a week (UDs), and do resistance exercises in the water as well. When I first started JUDDD, I was less faithful to exercise because it was so cold (I live in NY) that I wimped out on going to the pool some days. By the way, in his book, Dr. J says that not only can you exercise on DDs, but you can add calories to compensate for the exercise, but I only exercise on UDs.

5. No headaches. That's possibly because I never gave up my coffee! Actually, I never had that hunger on DDs that results from missing meals because I eat at least 3x a day. Some here are able to eat only once a day on DDs, but I am not one of them. I eat a little each time, but at least 3 times. I limit myself to 400 cal, but try to do 300-350 (fairly unsuccessfully:-)

Hello again, today has been great. I thought since I had a DD yesterday that I would be very hungry and eating everything in sight today, I have not over eaten as of yet. Maybe since I restarted things are going smoothly as for now LOL!
Did anyone watch Oprah yesterday? It was about longevity. A couple of men restricted their calorie intake and they talked about how great they felt and looked.
The show was kind of interesting, I don't usually watch Oprah but sister called and asked me to tune in.

Awesome! Sadly I tend to be an UD overeater... still working on that! Kudos to you.
I have done some reading online about calorie restriction and it is a fact that calorie restriction significantly lengthens the lifespan of lab animals. Does this work for humans? Who knows but it just might! And alternate day restriction gets our average down the number where we could potentially see this benefit.

Interesting stuff!

Thanks so much for answering my questions. Like I said I have been looking for something that fits me a bit better than just low carb and low calorie. I think there are alot of benefits to zig zagging calories and it seems like you all like it a lot. I am going to stick my toe in the water and give it a shot the rest of the week. Today will be an up day for me because my hunger has been high today.

Interesting stuff!
Dr. Oz said a study was done on lab mice and calorie restriction extended their lifespan, Dr. Johnson also states this too.
The two men on the show are being studied for extended lifespan.

Recalced Calories

I just went back to the website and re-did the calorie calculator because I have lost more than ten pounds since starting...

I have been right ranting about not going over 2000 cals on up days. My number for that day is 2002. Here's hoping I can do it!

Down Day cals at 20% restriction come in at 400 cals. I can hit this most DD or even under so thats good.

Also I re-read how he says to only weigh ONCE a week! I have SO NOT been doing this. And I'm not going to lie and pretend I'll even try lol.

On your up days do you aim for a certain number of calories or do you just eat until satisfied?

You are really supposed to just eat until satisfied but not stuffed.

I have been doing this for awhile though and have noticed that if I OVEREAT on UD it negates the weight loss for DD. So I am always trying not to go over my UD recommended calories... I don't usually make it

Hey Kisha, I just ran my numbers on the JUDDD website.
Up days - 2251 calories
Down days - 450 calories
Yesterday I had less than 400 cals so I'm good. Today I've eaten around 1500 cals.
If I get hungry later I will eat an apple or some carrots.
Looking forward to another DD tomorrow.

Next week I will do my DD like Leo, M-W-F, UD Tue- Thu- Sat and a mid day Sunday.
I think this will fit my schedule much better knowing my DH loves a hot breakfast on Saturday mornings.

Well don't hold back if you want to eat more! The most important part is definately the DD cals and staying under that limit.

If You go to Dr. Johnson Up Day Down Day Diet website, there is a grid there where you type in your age, weight and activity level. It calculates how many calories you should have for your DD and what the limit should be for your UD. You can decide if you want 20% - 35% calorie ratio between UD's and DD's - it all depends on how fast you want to lose weight.

Today is a DD for me too. I brought with me a can of green beans. If I get too hungry I will zap in micro a minute or two and eat. The whole can is around 70 calories. Also had my coffee with cream and splenda.

You can do it Homestretch, hang in there.

Rootin' for ya Homestretch! You can do it!!
Janice - Good luck on your DD!!

Yesterday's DD was pretty good, I came in just under 600 calories. I was shooting for 500, but it is not too bad. That's around 30% for me I think. I just did a really good hard workout and don't plan to go overboard for today's UD, so it should all average out.

So I was having big chocolate cravings yesterday evening. And I decided to play around with a recipe to make a low cal, low carb brownie. If the numbers are correct, and I believe they are, 1 serving came to just under 4 carbs and 39 calories. It didn't taste like a true brownie, maybe a little too cake-ish like, and not as rich, but it curbed the craving. DH and my daughter really liked it. I am going to freeze them for DDs when I have chocolate attacks, to keep me away from bad carbs and candy or donuts (my sweet tooth is my downfall  ).

Oh and I lost another 1/2 lb. whoo hoo!
