I'm down 2.2 pounds today after a 340 calorie down day yesterday and 50 minutes on the treadmill last night. Tom just showed up too, so who knows how real that 2.2 is, but I'll take it. That leaves 4.4 to lose to get back to pre-vacation weight.
Happy Alternating and Window Opening and Water Sipping everyone ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

You wrote: "OK, Dr J says that the SIRTI effect doesnt kick in right away, I dont remember the exact time, tho.. And while I dont recall Dr Herring mentioning it specifically for Fast Five (both of my books are loaned out now) I know that many proponents of calorie restriction claim that ANY kind of fasting will turn it on." From his book, I recall it takes 2-3 weeks for the SIRTI to kick in. The good news is that you don't lose it immediately if you skip a DD. It would take about 2 weeks away from the program to lose it entirely. "Are you familiar with Dr Michael Eades? He co-authored (with his wife ) a very wonderful plan called Protein Power which is a variation of Atkins but with an emphasis on protein intake. Well, he has a blog where he has praised Intermittent Fasting and it turns out he and his wife often combine IF with Protein Power to maintain their healthy weight." I"m a great fan of Dr. Eades, and I follow ProteinPower closer than Atkins in my low carb eating, and he's where I first heard of IF. However, on the main lobby, I found a reference where he is really down on IF. As I recall, he said that he didn't think it was "worth the trouble" in terms of weight control--i.e., his normal low carb eating worked similarly. It was on his blog, but I don't have the specific reference. I was tempted to try IF when he first talked about it, but I knew that anytime I KNOW I can't eat, it makes me anxious. That's why JUDDD works so well for me. Whether it's DD or UD, I spread my calories throughout the day. We all have to find what works for us, and I'm really happy to have found JUDDD! |

Hi all! Too many postings for me to catch up with all at once. I will read more later when I have time.
Maizenbluebabe - I do not do low carb and I find I have little appetite on my UD's as well. Dr J's book says eat when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfied on UD's and your body will know what you need. I do this and i am doing well. It's kind of nice not to be starving all the time and I am learning to listen to my body! LOL about the Dead Juddders! Welcome Denise - I hope you find great success here. This thread is a wealth of knowledge and support! Shunsweets - great idea about the spiritual fast. I am thinking of you and DH a lot and hope all goes well. Keep us posted and good luck. Wallaby -as for your dilema, when I have had a DD turn into more of an UD I make the decision on what to do based on the rest of my week and social engagements. So, if my DD today turns into an UD and I can have a DD tomorrow, I go right back to alternating, with the next day being a DD. I would probably eat a snack at night to make it through DD the next day. But, if I need my UD to fall on a specific day for social reasons, then I tweak it that way. Did I help you at all? It sounds confusing but it makes sense in my head! NoSugarShell - being up .4 pounds is not so bad after a brownie! lol Was this after a DD or an UD? I am always up a bit after a UD. It will come off fast, just hang in there! Quandria - how are you feeling now that you are back on JUDDD from your vacation? Are you finding your body got right back into it? Daisey - the shakes are just to get people used to eating low cal on their DD's and so you know you are only eating 'x' amount of calories, whereas when eating "real" food we can overestimate etc. But no, you don't need to start again. I started off sipping a SlimFast shake on my DD's but quickly wanted "real" food. I just made sure my measurements were accurate and I knew what the calories were. JGW - I sleep a lot better now too and I have twin DD's who are almost 3, so I need all the sleep I can get! lol Hi to e/e, gotta get back to teaching! ![]() |

EmandM--some good (inspiring) stuff here for those who dont low-carb and for the lucky devils who are in maintenance or close to it
we are going to need your insights on that subject even more as we approach that happy dayAlso, you mention some very creative ideas for wallaby (and the rest of us!)) of how to handle a "failed" DD and consider solving the problem by basing the week's eating plan on what is scheduled for that week in terms of "social" obligations. I have lunch out with friends one day next week and am going to try to schedule it for an UpDay but if not, am not going to obsess, but just try to choose nourishing Low Carb or maybe do a Moderate Day and begin again the day after--again, another really good idea I stole from the DEAD JUDDERS and which many of them used very successfully! ![]() Shell dont forget that intake of simple carbs causes water retention problems in some peeps just like sodium can. WHEEE--the bottle holding my day's requirement of water is now down to 1/4 of what I must take in. No hunger, no weakness, and lots of energy for the house cleaning I have been doing. One thing about this WOE is that my mood is always positive. (Of course, I learned long ago to avoid negative whiney people as soon as I figured tham out and that helps a lot! ) Outlook in life is everything, isnt it? Yesterday's down day was harder than they have been for me in the past. Usually I have little trouble waiting until dinner time to eat, or just water fasting. But yesterday I woke up famished and was hungry until I ate something at 2:00. Then the rest of the day played out pretty well and my workout felt wonderful. I had a little salad with some shrimp a bit later, although I didn't feel like I HAD to eat. Today is an up day and I woke up mostly not hungry, but had a decent breakfast and some fruit a little later. It's almost lunch time and I'm feeling very content. I do feel back on track now, everything feels pretty darn Judddy normal already ![]() |

EmandM - I am doing Fast Five. I have thought about doing JUDDD but right now Fast Five seems to be working. I lost 7 pounds pretty quick and it seems to have leveled off now so I might need to do some tweaking. I have room to go down in carbs as I haven't limited them much so far. |

1>) first you click on the icon to the right of the blue Quote button of the post you want to quote and then 3.)click the blue quote button itself . (You will then see your reply screen with the "quoted" message on it.) The next part sounds counter-intuitive but it works (for me, at least.) 4.) then you have to go back to the thread and refresh the page so that all the sidebars and dates, etc show--i.e. you are now seeing the regular page with all the posts showing up as usual. . 5.) From that page, you select another message to quote by clicking on the "multi-quote icon again just to the left of the quote button. (As you did in step 1.) 6.) Then click the big blue quote button again.... thus, repeating step 2. This will get you started. And I found that after I was through selecting messages to be quoted, and had the reply page with all the desired quotes o it, I was then free to edit the quotes and compose my replies. Gosh, I hope this makes sense! ![]() And I hope you were wanting to know how to multiple post so that I didnt describe you the wrong method for the wrong thing. Wow everybody I can't keep up! Sounds like all are doing well.
Couple of points from Dr J's book. He says SIRT1 maxes at about 3 weeks into the diet and then can be maintained so long as the alternate day fasting (DD) continues. He also says that fasts of less than 30 hours are not as effective in stimulating SIRT1. Remember he counts DD as a 24 hour fast so just 6 more hours puts one at 30. I wonder if that is why some of us who are skipping breakfast on UD are finding the diet suddenly works - no hunger, no shakes, energy, positive mood, less imflamation - that's optimal SIRT1! Does that make sense? My fast day is going perfectly. Meditated for an hour this morning. Walked in the sunshine for 2 hours this afternoon - it's cold but finally gloriously sunny. Gathering strength from nature and feeling light and free. When a bit of hunger feeling came on after walking I offered it up as a token of esteem to mother nature and it faded rapidly. Ah the mind games I play - but they work! |

![]() People on this board follow a few different plans and variations of those plans. JUDDD is alternate day dieting, where you keep your calories below a certain level one day, and then eat whatever you want the alternate day. Another plan is Fast Five, and I don't know too much about that one, except people eat all their calories for the day within a 5 hour window and then they're done eating for the day. Some of us include water fasting one or more days a week in our plans, some also incorporate low-carb eating into their plans. Most food limitations are based on the individual, rather than the plan. By that I mean that I follow JUDDD and can eat whatever I want on my down days as long as I stay under 500 calories. For me personally, I don't eat fruit or many carbs on my down days because the plan seems to work better for me by avoiding them. I do eat both on up days. It takes a little while for each person to figure out which plan works for them, and to come up with a schedule that fits with their lifestyle; but overall there is a lot of freedom with this way of eating, and it tends to work nicely with being able to live a pretty normal life with family and friends and social situations. If you want to incorporate juice fasting into one of these plans you just have to watch the calories and figure a way that works for you to feel satisfied with those calories. Maybe someone else on the board who is doing more fasting than I am (I do a water fast once a week) can address your questions better if you're set on making fasting a major part of your plan. If you want to check out JUDDD, do a google search for JUDDD and you'll find Dr. Johnson's site. The plan is called "Johnson's Up Day Down Day Diet". There's a place on the site that says "how to do the plan". There's a calorie calculator there, where you enter your height and weight and age (be sure to click the dots that change it to inches and pounds if you're not metric). This will calculate your suggested up day and down day calories. Dr. Johnson says the up day calories don't matter so much, but you'll want to stay within range on the down days. They get much easier the more you do, and in my opinion it's okay to go a little over the first few times as you adjust to eating low calories on the down days. It's great if you can do it right off the bat, but I know I overshot it by 100 or 200 calories my first two times, and then it got MUCH MUCH easier. Maybe someone else can go over the basics of Fast Five (I'd learn more about that one myself). Glad to see you here, ask as many questions as you like - you'll get friendly informative and supportive answers! Everyone here is great!! |

Welcome kind!
Great job, Quandria and thanks for taking the time to get kind and Daisey oriented! And since you were gone on vacation when we moved to this thread from the old JUDDD thread, you wont have had a chance to read our introductory remarks or know the history of this thread. The first 3 posts are where we have some quotes which we have taken directly from the appropriate websites. (I really shouldnt have told you that and just let you think that all of us have done endless hours of research in order to be such "experts" on things like Fast Five . ) But kind and daisey, since you werent with us at the other thread like Quandria was, you both really would benefit by reading POSTS 1, 2, AND 3 of this thread very carefully before you go any further. This will tell you "officially" (from Dr Johnson, Dr Herring, and the Water Fast experts--what it means to follow thie plans we are interested in here. And our introductory statements regarding support expected and standards of behavior (positive posts, no carping) from all our members will give you both some idea of whether you want to hang around here with this gang of wild women. The best way for us to help you get into the groove with the rest of us is for you to be well-informed of the basic plans we are doing and then feel free to jump in and ask questions about specifics.
