I've been following your thread for a few days and noticed that many of you have thyroid disorders...because of that I would like to join this thread...
My New Years Resolution was just to find a good doctor and get treatment for my hormonal imbalances...hypothyroid, adrenal fatigue, female hormones, and iron deficiency... That said perhaps this plan will help me to get back on track... I've done it a little before and had no problems with it so I'm looking forward to it... Hope you don't mind me jumping in...Happy New Year! TJ ![]()

Well I made it through the DD yesterday. The half meal at lunchtime worked and I actually wasn't hungry at suppertime, but ate the other half just to be reasonable. Then I woke up hungry this morning so I ate breakfast bacon and eggs and cheese and now I feel great. Think it was a little glitch in my Blood sugar/insulin levels so I'm doing very low carb today. I may have been letting the carbs creep up a bit - back to fats and protein for me!
I'm off to work so I won't eat again until dinner and have lamb in the crockpot. Yum. Hope everyone has a great day. Maizen - thank you for the good wishes. We'll have the news on Friday. ![]() |

well, they say confession is good for the soul so here goes:
yesterday was not a real DD, and it was supposed to be!Right after supper, it turned into a NOT DownDay and a NOT Low-Carb Day with the addition of three Medjool Dates and a big glass of milk to go with them! WHAT WAS I THINKING? (We need a Smiley Icon with a Dunce's Cap!) (Ohhhh crap, DH says it was FOUR dates--so it was even worse than I thought--and we have the four date pits to prove it. ) A total of only 220 calories added from the dates but it was the sugar that was the real killer--they added 66 carbs for me even not counting the ones in the milk! (So you see, when I say I am horribly sensitive to simple carbs, I aint kidding! )So, I am now up (after a "DownDay"--oh, yeah, right) this morning .4 of a pound instead of down and worse yet, I am hungry as I never am when eating LC. So it will be a real UPDay for me anyhow and I am about to have some scrambled eggs and bacon and enjoy this UpDay and now am wishing I had sent the remaining Medjools home with my kids when they left because they are not cheap and they are delicious and they are a lifelong love of mine, alas. (the dates, not the kids--although that statement is also true of my kids! )But like one of our wise leaders at the old JUDDD site always said, "with this plan you ALWAYS have a Do-Over." And for me, that "forgiving-ness" and the knowledge I can always make a new start each new day is what makes this plan such a good one for me. Each 24 hour period is a little world of its own if you need to begin again, and t's so easy to hop back onto the wagon if you slip off. I like the simplicity of knowing exactly where I got off the path and onto a detour and not having to follow some complicated list of rules to get back on the right track. Anybody else remember that old song that says: "...you just pick yourself up, Dust yourself off, And start all over again..." Last edited by maizenbluebabe; 01-04-2009 at 08:15 AM.. |

Welcome skeeweeaka!!
Thanks Retroworx for the encouragement! EmandM - I am still reading so I'll let you know about the UD calories! Yesterday was a successful UD for me - I ate about 1500-1600 cals which is HUGE for me and....even though I said I wasn't gonna weigh....I did...AND....I am down another .8 - so I am happy!! And I still feel really good! Work tomorrow with the stress of traffice and boss being back will really put this to a test so I am glad Monday is an UD. I have exercised - 48 min cardio walk and toning from Exercise Tv and Less is More Pilates - 20 min so 68 min. I may exercise tomorrow or I may take the day off - I will have to see what time I get up. Eating: so far so good - I just had a semi frozen Muscle Milk Light Vanilla Protein shake - it was very good. I had coffee w/creamer prior to working out this morning as I do every morning. I do not plan on eating again until around 4 or 5 and I will have a thin pork chop and lettuce w/ 1T vinegarette and coffee w/creamer. That should put me at about 389 which is my rec. DD cals. Have a great Sunday everyone!!! Last edited by Debbi; 01-04-2009 at 09:43 AM.. |

Third DD complete and so far so good! I think I fasted too long yesterday (37 hours) because I kind of overdid it with breakfast this morning. I didn't eat poorly, just too much~two eggs, ham, 1 slice toast with butter, coffee w/cream then SF jello w/whipped cream. It was sure good though! I'm definitely with OP who does NOT have a problem getting their calories in on UD! My third DD went much more smoothly and my calories were kept under 400. I didn't weigh this morning because I was too excited to eat, LOL!
Debbi, I wish I could find the motivation to exercise. I SO need to! |

Maizenbluebabe I love your positive attitude. We really can restart every day. I've never eaten a date and your post makes me want to try one!
![]() Ocean I'm the one who is with you - no trouble eating lots on UD and having cals that would have shocked me just 1 month ago - but it's working! Welcome Skeeweeaka Jump right in. ![]() I'm so glad this thread is so active. Please keep posting everybody. I love the support. So glad we're all friendly so don't feel ignored or left out (I'm so sensitive I don't post anywhere but here for fear of people's response or no response - how sad is that!) just know we all read and enjoy every post! I am still amazed at how much my desire to eat is psychological!
As I posted a while ago, I used to do just MWF and DDs and decided to switch to pure alternate days. So this is my first Sunday as a DD (it was a "moderate" day that often escalated to an UD; my reason for wanting to change). And I found myself wanting to eat all the time. And then I remembered that my usual Sunday habit was to graze all day, and I think that's why I want to eat because when I examine myself, I don't have any sense of emptiness or hunger at all. But I know how often in the past I WOULD eat when I felt this way. Ironically, when I actually experience true hunger on a DD, it feels "clean," and doesn't really make me want to eat. The really nice thing about JUDDDD is that it's exposing my really bad "habits," while also giving me a sense of control of my eating. |

Leo - I totally understand what you mean about "clean" hunger vs. psychological hunger. I am the same type of eater and that is why I too had to switch to true alternate days instead of MWF and a moderate day (which always turned into an UD)! Even today at my second party (my nephew turned one) I did really well. I had one piece of pizza and some strawberry shortcake (more fruit than cake). I should have left it at that and fasted, but DH wanted Japanese take out for dinner and I ended up having Miso soup and some fried tempura (veggies only, but still fried). I was not hungry and didn't need it but it is way easier for me to say no if I am fasting all day (on a DD) than it is for me to do an MD. Oh well I knew today would be an UD and tomorrow is DD and back to work for me!
Maizenbluebabe - yep, confession is great for the soul and you really didn't slip up much! Gotta get my kids in their jammies, back for more personals later! |

Oh my, shunsweets, your posts are so informative and supportive and great to read, you should not feel shy about posting here or anywhere, and sometimes our posts get lost in the shuffle at a busy thread like this and they get ignored and when that happens, we ALL feel kind of, "hey, I wrote all those wise things and nobody paid any attention." I mean I think it is human nature to do that, but never fear, YOU yourself will not be ignored here and neither will anyone else. And if anyone gets crabby with anyone else here , I will hunt them down and SIT ON THEM, and that will quiet them down in a hurry as they wont be able to breathe with me plunked down on them. (And I'm not gettign up until they promise to be sweet ) ![]() But somehow, I think that wont happen here--we are all kind hearted and want the best for each other, I would bet money on that! and and to all of you, dear JUDDD friends.Quote:

I am signing off for the night but just wanted to say that everyone here is so positive and the reinforcement is great!! I did manage to end my DD at 399 cals - 10 over but I'l take it and call it on plan! I really had another good day and it seems my mood is better....
Angie - If I don't exercise I feel like I have cheated - but it wasn't always like that - I used to have to force myself. So, I started by saying I will do 10 minutes and quit and sometimes I did but more often I didn't and that is how I got started. I am way too self-conscious to exercise in public (not even in front of BF) so now I have quite a library of exercise videos and DVDs. I found the treadmill too boring for me so when I lost everything in Katrina I did not replace it..I need to have lots of variety so that I stay interested. I also do it first thing in the morning because later I am too tired and too many things get in the way. Talk to everyone tomorrow..... |

Thanks everyone for the welcome!
Well today was my first day back on track...and it wasn't so bad. It seems easy for me to eat nothing, as opposed to trying to figure out "something." Anyway, had about a 500 calorie dinner with pinto beans, spinach, and a SF pudding cup.... Hope everyone has a fabulous evening! TJ ![]() |

Debbi - thanks for looking out for that info. while you read. I sometimes go over DD cals by 50 calories or so. What does he say about that? lol I do the exact same thing for my running program. On days where I don't want to go on my treadmill I say "go for 5 min and if you still want to stop then you can." I have yet to stop after 5 min! That's a great way to get our butts in gear!
Maizenbluebabe - I love your zest for life and supportiveness! Yes, sit on anyone who is mean! lol I don't think we will have that problem on this thread, these ladies are amazing! Glad to hear you are getting into exercising. I love Poirot! What a great gift! Shunsweets - I am sensitive like you as well. I try to always respond to personals. I am on another board for parenting, and you can see how many people have read the thread and how many have replied. SOmetimes hundreds of people have read my thread but then I get, like, 3 replies! It's weird but sometimes it hurts my feelings! Oncedreaming - your UD's won't always be like that (wanting to eat). It tapers off the longer you are eating this way. Are you going to weigh after your next DD? Leo - I wanted to add to my last post, that I have trouble with Fridays being DD's. I used to do MWF UD's so that I could partake in Friday treats in the staffroom at work (I am a teacher). I would also always have Friday as my cheat day even when I was on CAD, so it's always been a junk day and something i really look forward to (sitting at home with DH after a long week watching tv and eating chocolate covered almonds kind of thing).I switched to pure alternate over the holidays and this Friday will be my first DD at work. I am really curious as to how I do. I just won't go to the staff room at recess but it will really take me awhile to get used to from a purely psychological standpoint. Isn't the pscyhe an amazingly powerful thing? I associate certain habits with food and they are very hard to break! Well, I woke my kids up after only 45 minutes of their nap today in order for them to get to bed on time (the holidays were schedule-free so they would wake up later, nap later, go to bed later etc). They were cranky but we managed and they were asleep before their heads touched their pillows by 7 so tomorrow should be ok when I wake them up for daycare! I am not looking forward to heading back to work, but sigh, what can you do! |

Hi everyone,
I am not starting this week off well - BF had a migraine 2 am and woke me up for his medicine - I woke up to get to work at 5 and I woke w/a headache. No exercise this am too tired. I am at work and no drama so far Today is an UP day for me - I have had coffee w/creamer and Ezekial Toast (1) w/ 2T peanut butter so I am off to a good start!! Rain in Houston today is expected hopefully it will not be at 5 pm... Dr. Johnson says he eats 500 cals on his DD and that the percentage can vary between the 20% and up to the maintenance percentage in the calculator. He also said that if you exercise and you know for sure the number of calories burned you can add those back in on either a DD or an UD. Have a good one.......... |

Thanks for reminding us of Dr Johnsons's advice about calorie counting and the calorie burning benefits of adding exersize--I hope my treadmill will arrive and get set up tomorrow and I can start adding that into my life again. A lot of peeps get bored on a treadmill. Some are able to watch TV--but that doesnt work for me, so I put on a Bob Seger CD and then can hardly get off the thing. That beat must raise my endorphins to the sky because after I have been at it for about 20 minutes, I can often go for an hour on the treadmill just carried along by the sheer energy of the music. Hi and welcome to Skeeweaka! I hope you find great success on this plan!
Maizenbluebabe - have you tried intervals on the treadmill? A minute of fast running (or really fast walking if you don't run) and then a minute of a slower pace etc. Then you slowly increase the minutes you go fast. I find this makes the time go much, much faster than just straight minutes of running or walking. What kind of treadmill did you order? Debbi - ugh. what an awful start to the week. I hope thinks look up for you and BF feels better. DD for me and I am back at work. I was a bit peckish when I woke up but now I've had my morning coffee and feel good. Thanks for the info. about the DD calories. Sometimes I go a little over my recommended DD cals. |

Yesterday I did want to eat A LOT. I didn't make the best choices but I didn't go crazy either. Today is DD and actually most welcome-weird isn't it? I have had a little "fling" with carbs since starting but my next UD will be back to whole, lower carb foods. I do very much look forward to my Ezekiel toast in the morning with my eggs so I'll probably keep that. But I'll save the other stuff for only once in a while. Still haven't gone off the deep end with sweets. I guess doing LC for so long, something has finally stuck! I do weigh every day and have for months. I don't let it get to me, mainly because the scale has bounced the same 5 pounds for the last 6 months or so. This WOE looks promising though. I'm only up 1/2 pound from my UD which also happens to be my lowest weight in the last 6 months as well. Honestly, though, I never expect to see a loss on the scale. Maizenbluebabe: how was your Poirot evening? I'm right there with you on the DD today! Your posts are always so supportive! Shun: I've never had an appetite problem, lol! ![]() Debbi: Hope you and your SO have a better evening. Here's another shout out for NO RAIN AT RUSH HOUR! Leo: I have come to the conclusion that 99% of my eating/not eating/cravings/binges/you name it is psychological. The only thing that is working for me is small changes a little bit at a time. Sometimes it's two steps forward and one step backward but so be it. Have a great Monday everyone! |

I ate green grapes this morning...then used Calorieking.com to find the calorie/carb info...who would have know that they were full of carbs!! What fruits do you all find most effective? |

I am jumping over from the Intuitive Eating Thread. Today is my first DD. I planned it today because I would be going back to work after being off two weeks, I'm a teacher. But the joke is on me because we are in a state of emergency for all our snow, i love snow, so we are not going back . Of course, I'm still embracing my first DD. I meditate a lot so I guess I will just mediate my hunger away, in stead of working it away like I plannedFor breakfast I had two eggs, lunch will be a can of zuc. with tom. and an egg. and dinner will be the same. The calorie count will be real close to 500.

"Effective?" For weight loss? Really -- none.
Well, okay. Common LC wisdom has it that most fruits are too carby if you're not in maintenance, but the ones lowest in carbs and furthest down the Atkins ladder are the berries -- strawberry, blueberry, etc. If you are really sensitive to carbs -- i.e. they cause blood sugar swings, cravings, etc. I would suggest staying away from fruits on down days. They may cause you to derail. And they will probably provide the least "required" nutrients for the day for the calories allowed -- protein will probably keep you full longer. Good Morning Ladies!!
I've been reading, but haven't been responding - sorry about that! Just wasn't on the computer much this weekend and now I'm back at work. And what a relief it is to be back at work and a more normal JUDDD routine. I really do have a harder time on the weekends. And with tom and leftover holiday treats... well, as I said it's a relief to be back at work! Today is a down day and I'm trying for my regular Monday water fast, but I'm not 100% sure yet that that's going to happen. Let's see if the warm tea will knock-out the slight hunger I'm having already (it's 8:30 am, usually I'm not hungry on a down day this early). Oh, I agree completely with whomever said that the down day hunger feels like a "clean hunger". I actually almost enjoy it. I acknowledge it, and that it has a right to be there but it sure doesn't seem to last long once I do that. If it becomes distracting, it helps me to think of it as more of a feeling of warmth, similar to how it feels if you have an alcoholic drink, or take cold medicines. Not sure if that will translate correctly into what I'm trying to say. Happy Alternating everyone! And a huge happy to everyone new here; whether posting or lurking. This is a great group of people! |

One could say the exception to this is the BG crash some of us have when we eat simple carbs which then causes us to feel hungry and eat.. Ah, but is it "real physical hunger" that makes us crave the high carb foods in the first place? Well, the BG/Insulin connection is certainly physical but I contend that in the first place this kind of "appetite" for taking in any simple carb comes from our minds not our bodies. Our ancient ancestors did not eat grains or sweets (except for a rare honey find and a few berries now and then.) So this takes us right back to what Leo41 said. When my mind is controlled, I dont eat more than I need physically and I also dont eat the things my body doesnt need. I guess that in this day of FOOD SURPLUS of every kind, 99% of our hunger comes from our wayward brains and not our physical selves. And worse yet, it seems impossible in actual "life" to separate the mind from the body. A favorite Bible quote of my mother was Psalm 139 which says: "for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." How very true--arent we complicated little creatures, though? Last edited by maizenbluebabe; 01-05-2009 at 09:22 AM.. |

Ah yes, we l lived for many years where the Voice of The Snowblower was heard in the land...and the arrival of a lot of snow is a thrill for kids of all ages--at least at first. Then the Grown-Up Kids have to deal with the practicalities of it if it lingers too long and it screws up work and travel and gets to be not so much fun. For those of us who experience insatiable appetite with high carb foods, I'd say that's physical rather than psychological hunger. That doesn't mean our bodies NEED food, but the insulin, etc. chemistry is causing true hunger pangs. If I eat bread, pasta, etc., I am always hungry--and uncomfortably so.
That's why I think those of us who are eating low carb and need it (as I do) need to stick to low carb even on our UDs--otherwise the hunger will get out of control. Since I have to restrict calories so much in order to lose, just the ability to eat more food on an UD is enough of a "treat" for me without dipping into sugar or starch. Of course, it's also a medical issue for me, as I'd be a full-blown diabetic were it not for low carb eating, so that helps me focus on low carb. I think that I find this alternate day eating manageable because of the appetite suppression of low carb. Of course, those of you who don't react to carbs may not have this problem. |

I had a Proform CrossTrainer ($600) before for 10 years--ordered from the company, LOVED IT! and would have gotten one again except that if you have a problem, there are many current and recent reviews complaining about quality and especially CUSTOMER SERVICE which several reviews from owners with problems now say is either Non-Existent or a total disgrace.. The Gold's gym 450 is available at our local WalMart and will be easier and cheaper for me to return if there is a problem. I am going to pick it up tonight and hopefully it should be up and running tomorrow. I am not hard on equipment and although this one is not expensive ($377) and far from top of the line, it got good solid reviews and is what I need as it wont get used by anyone but me and chubby as I am, I am far from the weight limit posted for it. I wont be actually "running" on it--usually go a steady 3 MPH on it--a bit more after I build up my fitness. And sprints will be brief and not very high speed. So think this is worth a try since I need exercise of this kind and have greatly enjoyed it in the past--and lost lots of weight pretty quickly while using my old TM combined with LC. I will let you-all know how I like it and whether it still works its magic for me. The major complaints about these lower priced and lighter duty TM's aremost often by men, or those who are serious runners and who need a powerful motor and running belt/surface which will stand up to hours of pounding..
