mammapo~congratulations on the 8 pounds. That is GREAT!
Kisha, do you generally have to stick to a lower calorie UD too? Those calories look pretty typical of one of my UD. I didn't eat all day yesterday until my evening meal where I ate 400 calories in the form of chicken meatballs, Frank's hot sauce, and blue cheese dressing. Note to self: don't go grocery shopping on DD. Turned out fine, though, as I'm down another pound today!! |

DD going well so far. Wasn't starving at lunch so I'm waiting for dinner to eat. Will probalby be a few scrambled eggs cooked in PAM. I've found that some DDs one meal of three eggs is enough for me. And I'd LOVE to lose a pound or two this week so I'm really giving DDs my all. |

This is my first "all-real-food" DD (i.e., no shakes), and it just evolved because I had two cooked fish fillets in the fridge that I knew were 100 cal. each. I had one for lunch and will have one for dinner.
In the morning, I had my coffee (tastes really luxurious since I've been on JUDDD for some reason) along with my usual DD breakfast (egg white in PAM, laughing cow cheese wedge, 2 bran crispbead crackers=100 cal.). I need to eat 3 times a day because I take medication and supplements that should be taken with food--but I also prefer that system. Perhaps as I get into this, I can eat just once, but when I think I "can't" eat, I get too anxious, so this is easier for me. I admire those who can fast, but somehow I need the assurance that food is possible. Actually, just NOT eating after my last scheduled meal on DDs is a significant triumph for me! |

I'm back to slowly losing again, so I'm sure JUDDD wasn't the problem when my weight suddenly bounced up. I was afraid that the alternate day eating was too much for my weak metabolism, but I seem to be doing OK. On the main thread, Blood Sugar 101 posted something about stalling on ketogenic diets after 3 weeks--something about the body adjusting. Perhaps this is true of any major change in eating? Anyhow, this seems to be working again--I don't mind losing slowly, but I want to be on that downward curve.
Now I'm seeking advice--I am basically a recluse, but next month I have one week in which I have two occasions that involve dinners. Making one day an UD, leaves the other one a DD--which I want to avoid. I know not to do two DDs in a row, but I also don't want to do two UDs in a row. Here's my plan (let me know what you think): My regular calories are as follows: DD 400; UD 1200-1400 (to average 800-900 daily). I plan to do two "M (middle)Ds" of 800 calories that week. They won't be consecutive; one follows a DD and the other follows an UD. This is to insure that my dinners both fall on UDs. This should keep the calorie count the same for the week--although that particular week, I'll only have two DDs. Please keep in mind that this won't be a habit--having two events in one week is very rare for me. Last edited by Leo41; 01-31-2009 at 09:50 AM.. |

Leo, you could do that, or you could simply have two UDs in a row.
A lot of our members do that regularly and don't seem to be the worse for it. THe other option (which is what I do when faced with the same problem) is to treat whatever DD that falls on a dinner this way: I fast, and if I can't take it, I fill in with a nice hefty metamucil Smoothie to calm the hunger - metamucil plus either cranberry or another berry, ice and water. Or just water if I'm cold and skip the ice. About 50 calories. If I still can't take it I make myself shitaki noodle 'soup' with plenty of seasonings. I keep the daily total to under 100, and I wait to eat the majority of my calories until the dinner, then eat very sparingly at the dinner of the high cal stuff and more generously of the low cal stuff. The key is to allow yourself 'a bite' of the foods without eating a whole portion of the foods. I stick with 1/4 c servings of 'heavier' foods and 1 c servings of light foods (veggies and salad) and less than 2 ounces of meat wherever I'm going. If dessert is high calorie, I just skip it or take less than 1/2 c of whatever it is and then only eat a bite of it. You should still end up around 30% of your Daily recommended limit, which is still within 'weight loss' category according to dear Dr. J. himself, if you do this. I almost always do, even without strictly counting until after. Then you could still stay on track. Now, obviously, if you're going to a friends' house you can't be rude and jsut skimp on everythign, because it would be obvious, but still using the fast-till-dinner approach, this should give you a solid MD. And remember - 2 UD in a row are actually allowed on textbook JUDDD, but MDs are a tweak. You wanted to stay closer to center in doing the diet as prescribed, so honestly I'd stick with two updays and then do a down day after. Naomi Quote:

Thanks, Naomi. I had actually thought of that--i.e., having only about 100 cal. and then eating sparingly at dinner (it's in a restaurant) because I need to learn how to eat out and stay somewhat restricted in terms of calories. This might be good practice. Perhaps I'll make one of these meals a DD just to experiment.
We're traveling to New Orleans in April for a long weekend, and I'm going to have to be able to eat out "sparingly" or I'll return with 10 additional pounds! |

I love reading how well everyone is doing and how you're all learning to manage things! I stick to 500 calories on my DDs, but I've learned that I get very hungry at night so I've been eating 200 calories during the day and saving 300 for something at night. That's been helping me so much. Before the February thread starts, I just wanted to post that I weighed this morning to see what I've lost in January and here it is..
Weeks on Plan: almost 4 Loss-to-Date: 14! Starting Weight: 335 Age:37 I've been working 11 hour days lately and haven't posted but I really do want to start posting more. I love JUDDD more and more all the time. Oh, and I finally ordered the book from ebay so I'm really looking forward to reading it. Have a great day, everyone! |

Congratulations on that spectacular loss, Donia!
About your DD hunger-do you eat low carb at all? I ask because that's the ONLY thing that controls my appetite. In fact, I think I had no real trouble with DDs from the beginning because I had been eating LC for so long. If you don't eat LC, try it early in the day--i.e., protein and fat in the morning will help keep you satisfied most of the day. As I posted before, I have an eggwhite fried in PAM with cheese and a bran cracker for 100 cal. with my morning coffee, and that's really satisfying. Of course, I try to eat LC on my UDs too (about 30-40 g. of carb). |

I have to go to dinner on saturday which is an upday for me. Thank you so much for your advice. Now I can keep my down day and easily stay below 30%!!! We are going for Italian food so I think I will try a greek salad w/dressing on the side. Last time I had an event, I tried to do two UDs in a row and being a newbie I had a hard time getting back on track. I want my DD set in cement (at least for the time being). This helps so much. |

good plan!
A 12 oz. Greek Salad with no dressing, typical moderately priced restaurant size is about 300 calories. Estimate about 60 calories per cup of mixed salad. The typical greek salad dressing is 100 calories per 2 tbsp, and you usually get 1/4 c on the side, so that little cup will be around 200 calories. This should bring the whole salad to about 500 calories, if you lick the plate. Mixed together, you should estimate 100 calories per cup of total salad. Measure a rough cup as the size of your tightly clenched fist. Since a typical restaurant salad in the US is 5 cups, you can safely divide the salad into 'pie wedges' and eat the portion that meets your calorie requirements for the day. An even safer bet would be to mix the whole salad and 1/2 of the dressing and then eat only half of the whole mixed thing, which would definitely keep you around 200 calories and allow you some leeway with low calorie foods during the morning and lunchtime. Of course your DD total may be higher than mine, so adjust your game plan accordingly. Good luck and have fun!! Quote:
