Hi Debbie. I am also a type 2 diabetic (since 1996) and poorly controlled it with oral meds until I went on insulin back in January. The insulin helped but I got serious about low-carbing 4 1/2 weeks ago...Oh My Goodness! What a difference! I am prolly averaging 30-40 carbs a day but have only lost a few pounds. I had gained over 20lbs after going onto insulin. I assume that your husband has a meter? Have him check his levels often and record them. Tell him to not feel like a failure if he needs to take some oral meds. I have greatly reduced my intake of insulin and the mental "carb fog" is gone. I now feel cruddy if my bg is over 130! I used to begin to feel low (shakey, hungry) around 110. Now that doesn't happen until around 60. Since going low carb I have lost the craving for carbs and the desire for continuously shoveling food into my pie-hole! I don't necessarily follow any certain diet but I have eliminated a lot of foods from my diet. I don't feel deprived at all. I take 2 squares of Lindt 85% cocoa chocolate a day. I call it my medicinal chocolate. Only 4 carbs in the 2 squares. I am very happy with my bg numbers and I know that my dr. will be as well Good luck to him!

Debby, I wish you and you husband the very best when it comes to managing this Diagnosis. My Dad is now suffering horribly from T2 Diabetes complications - not something I want to ever have to do! I applaud you for coming here right away, and taking immediate steps to get his blood sugar under control before things escalate.

I know there are many other people here personally battling diabetes who will weigh in with support for you.

Mean time, I really like the book Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. I think he also has written an update more recently. You might want to check it out at your local library or go ahead and spring for it at Amazon.

Best wishes!

DG

WOE: Atkins 72
Start Date: September 21, 2008
Nine years ago my Dr prescribed this diet for me as a type 2 diabetic. My sugars got under control almost immediately as I lost thirty pounds. I quit paying attention and got off the diet, regained 20 of the thirty. My diabetes started to rear its head again. I've been watching my weight and exercising a little and I'm back to near normal.

The exercise seems to really make the difference.

I have just restarted Atkins 72 in an attempt to get to "really good" or great numbers again. Once there it is my intent to stay on Atkins the rest of my life. I am about 17 pounds into "obese", my goal is to become "overweight." Once there I will evaluate my numbers for a while and decide if more radical weight reduction is in order.
