pills from family doctor
When I go to the doctor next week I am going to talk to her about my depression and panic attacks and the horrible anxiety I have been getting.
Because she is just a family doctor can she give me any meds for depression or anti anxiety medication? I can’t afford to go to a physiatrist and I am so tired of being upset . |

And, if you need medication, your family doctor can certainly prescribe medication. Panic Attacks are HORRIBLE, and there's no reason to suffer. There is medication, for them. Last edited by Melle : 05-15-2008 at 08:19 PM. |

yes i think the family doc can prescribe you meds for depression/anxiety. sometimes they can offer free samples, and many medications like prozac and zoloft now have generic versions.

thank you for that thread, even before I read your comment I was trying to think of new things I have had in my diet and the only new thing I can come up with is nutrasweet. I was using a few packs a day on my strawberries. I am no longer going to use nutrasweet, just splenda for I have never had a problem with it.
I just am praying that it was the nurtrasweet that made me dizzy, because this is scary, I guess in a few days we will know? I am still going to go to the doctor about my depression, because I know I have it, it runs in the family and I was diagnosed at 16 with it but refused meds, now I want the help so bad |

If you're seriously ill, you can't afford NOT to see a psychiatrist. It's not just some old guy who listens to you talk about your problems every week - they're a trained expert in depression and other problems. Generally they have lots of free samples AND programs so you can get your meds for free or nearly free. I have no insurance and make $700 a month, I can afford to see my psychiatrist. He only costs $10 more a visit than the walk in clinic down the street.
If I were in a car wreck and couldn't feel my legs, I'd go to the emergency room regardless if whether I thought I could afford it. I wish people treated "mental illness" with the same respect as a "regular" illness. I do see the Lexapro man at my "regular" doctor. If weight gain is an issue with you make sure you tell your doctor. Some antidepressants can cause weight gain.

If you start feeling very jumpy, wanting to talk a lot, or wanting to spend unusual amounts of money, after starting them you need to call your doctor ASAP. Many people are diagnosed with bipolar disorder when they find out that antidepressants alone make them "wired".
If so, it's not a big deal, just another pill or two a day. Sometimes not even that. |

I'm on Zoloft too for panic. It works but I'm not sure about the weight gain. I work a sedintary job sitting behind a desk. And since starting zoloft I've gained 30lbs. I've started working out again and cutting back on crap food. If that doesn't help by the next time I see Dr. I want to get switched to something else. |

I haven't gained any weight, in fact I have no appetite so I have been losing a little. If your medication gets changed please let me know what you are given. I hate taking drugs and was trying all the B-vitamins but nothing seemed to be working. I have had this for just over two months. Joan

I took Paxil for anxiety attacks that came in the form of stomach upset and diarreha. At first they thought it was just IBS but I sort of self-diagnosed it as social phobia. My general practitioner prescribed them and they were a miracle for me. I took them for about 6 years and then decided to try things without them. About 1 year since I have been off of them. I still have a few symptoms but not bad. However, if I become worse I will absolutely go back on meds. I would have not been able to function w/o them. I couldn't go out to eat, to the store, etc. w/o having to run to the bathroom and then I thought people were counting my trips to the bathroom so it all compounded.

Sweetlady66, several people have mentioned the dangers of aspartame ("Equal" "Nutrasweet" etc) I cannot use it at all! I used to have a packet or two almost every day in my oatmeal, and all was fine. Then without warning, after a year or so, I began to have mysterious headaches. (I had never had headaches.) They became so bad that I called them "my braintumor headaches." About the time I got desperate enough to see the doc about them, I stumbled over an article claiming that some researchers suspect aspartame of causing "brain lesions" Symptoms varied: dizziness, headaches, vision problems, etc. Some people actually claim that it can cause emotional problems. The manufacturer of aspartame denies all these claims. And says it is totally harmless. That may be, for many, or most people, but for me--shortly after i gave up using aspartame, the "braintumor headaches " went away. Interestingly, several months later, I had two glasses of delicious iced tea at the home of a friend. And within half an hour, my head ached and throbbed so badly that i could not drive. I learned later that her tea contained aspartame, so in a way, I had conducted my own " doubleblind" experiment.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers--I know you are already in the caring hearts of all the others here (there is wisdom in their advice--I hope their thoughtful and concerned remarks will help lighten your burden) Like them, i hope to hear soon that you are healing. |
