U.S. company recalls about 286,000 pounds of meat
U.S. company recalls about 286,000 pounds of meat
Sat May 3, 2008 12:24pm EDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A New York company is voluntarily recalling about 286,000 pounds (129,700 kg) of fresh and frozen meat and poultry products that may be contaminated with bacteria, U.S. agriculture officials said on Saturday. The products produced by Gourmet Boutique LLC of Jamaica, New York, were sent to food service and retail establishments nationwide, a U.S. Department of Agriculture statement said. The meat may be contaminated with Listeria monocyotogenes bacteria, which can cause a rare but potentially fatal disease known as listeriosis, the USDA said. Infants, the elderly, people with HIV and patients undergoing chemotherapy are among those at risk for the disease. Listeriosis also can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. The USDA said it had received no reports of illnesses linked to the products that were being recalled. U.S. company recalls about 286,000 pounds of meat | Health | Reuters |

Try to stick to local, grass fed beef. It's way more expensive, but what's the alternative?

Canned salmon (wild-caught red Alaskan) is still safe?
Fish coming from China is reported contaminated and otherwise questionable.
Tuna is full of mercury, as are other large fish. I'm stocking up on canned salmon and canned sardines, with occasional tuna, as my best bet in protein. Well, that and eggs. Grass-fed beef sounds good, but can I really depend on labeling? I wonder. The good thing about all the beefy recalls is that it makes a fast-food burger look a lot less enticing. |

We have a company here in Texas producing grassfed animals (beef, lamb, goat) and semi-grass fed (pork). It's $4.60/lb for their variety package of beef and $5.something or there abouts for the lamb and goat. Their pork is $4.10/lb for the variety package.
I looked at prices yesterday and although some individual cuts are higher than at the grocery store, others are less expensive. I think they average out to be about the same amount. The difference in their quality is HUGE!!! The meat actually has a very sweet, clean smell. Almost an absence of smell!!! I think you have to KNOW your producers in order to be able to fully trust in what they are doing. The meat does come to us frozen but that's ok, it's just gonna get frozen when we get it. They will ship FED EX anywhere in the US. You should look into them. They are out of Amarillo TX. The guy is an Aggie (A&M has an incredible agriculture department). It's called Paidom Meats. You can google them.

I just plain refuse to be frightened ... period.
Not beef, fish, aluminum foil, plastic containers, germs, shopping cart handles, non-stick pans, charcoal broiling, pink/blue/yellow packets, or silly FDA/Plarmaceutical/AMA conspiracy theories. That's how I stay healthy. ... I don't worry. ![]() . |
