I don't know what WOE is, but I do know that if your insulin level is high then you need the Met, unless you are one of those successful people who somehow manage to get levels down by sheer weight loss.
I have no problems with hairloss, extra hair in places I shouldn't have hair, no dark patches of skin anywhere, no unusually bad acne, no skin tags ... nothing. I don't know if I'd have trouble getting preggers or not because I've never been married or anything. Now I'm nearly 40, and no man in sight, so, I think this is just the way it's gonna be. ![]() Anyway, I was diagnosed with PCOS because my insulin levels were high, even though my sugar has always been within normal range, and I have cystic ovaries. He suspected it because I've always had irregular periods The last few years have been more abnormal than the normal abnormal though ... I went a couple of years having a span of three to four months of no period, and then one year of back to a period two to two and a half weeks apart, and then I went three months without again and then the final straw was when I had a three week period. I am overweight, and I do carry alot of my weight in my abdomen. I'm pretty sure that was another initial sign to him that this was PCOS. The metformin does seem to have helped. I was on time for a few months and then this month I was four or five days late, but still, I've never been able to just sit and go, okay, I should be starting now and then have it happen right when it's supposed to. I thought that was just something the normal women say ... ![]() Now, with doing a more laid back kind of low carbbing ... meaning I eat a sandwich here and there, and a sweet here and there as well, I've managed to lose 30 pounds total and nearly two inches off my waist thus far. So, I'm happy to be making progress. I am a little curious though. My mother and her mother both started their cycles when they were 11 and my grandmother, my mothers mother went into menopause naturally at 42. So, seeing that I started my cycle at the same age, I'm wondering if I will do the same thing? And then, if sao, how wil I know the difference between that and a PCOS problem? |

Hi all!
I am new here for PCOS...I found out today thru a hormone check my levels are up and she is sending me to a OBGYN for a further look...I have lost over 100 lbs on LC since October 2006 but put back about 15 lbs of it eating the same way since January of this year. My cycles are terrible..very heavy and they run up to 2 a month or even going about 40 day between. I also have type 2 diabetes that is controlled with my diet and excerise. I really feel I have had this for years..we had a 7 year span between a miscarriage and our son, Brandon during our 12 year marriage. Would love to have another child if we could. Hope to find some wonderful information and support here. HUGS Christina

Welcome, Christina!
Good luck on this journey. I hope your GYN can help you sort through your lab work. Sometimes, a reproductive endocrinologist can offer a more in-depth treatment plan than a standard GYN. |

HI everyone!
Thought I would join because I have had PCOS for 10 years. I just started back on Atkins today actually! I had my second baby 10 weeks ago and its time! I have all the classic PCO symptoms-no periods, baldness, dark skin, excessive facial/body hair, and weight that only goes up. I have also had the opposite end of the spectrum- periods that will not go away. Through it all I managed to get pregnant with my 2 girls- one is 4, the other is 10 weeks. Both were surprises and I was doing hardcore LC when I got pregnant both times. Glad to meet all of you! ![]()

Welcome! Congrats on the successful pregnancies. It's not always easy with the lot we've been dealt. I have found that LC helps to manage the weight and the symptoms-my skin even started lightening up! I use a shampoo called Nioxin for thinning hair, and I've noticed a difference. It removes DHEA from the scalp, or so it claims.

Congrats on the pregnancy! How far along are you? I too use Nioxin. I didnt think my hair was thicker when I was pregnant, but now I am shedding clumps of it. It doesnt seem thinner to me though so I am hoping its just the hormones tapering off. I wear my hair super curly because it makes me feel like you cant see my scalp as much. The thinning hair probably bothers me the most. Hope you are having a wonderful pregnancy! |

Thanks! I'm ten weeks tomorrow. The pregnancy is going really well. I'm only mildly ill, and wishing for reassurance's sake that I were sicker. I've successfully carried one other child, my only other pregnancy, nine years ago. There's no reason to doubt my ability to carry this one. In fact, I tend to be pretty good at being pregnant. My struggle is getting pregnant! When DS was 3, we decided to start trying for another one...
Here we are, six years later, finally pregnant! I used Met, Clomid, herbs, accupressure, and cycles of Demulin through that time. What worked for me was losing 95 pounds in the past year. TA DA! Spontaneous ovulation! It's good to have you around!

Oh yeah, as soon as I can I'm finding out the sex. I have an appointment on Tuesday, and I may not get an ultrasound. If they don't offer one, I'm going to start complaining about pain from the cyst on my right ovary. It's only about 2 cm, but it still legitimately hurts. I've heard that hormones during pregnancy can cause the cyst to grow, which can weigh down and strangulate the ovary. I want to have a third child, so I need both my baby makers! I don't know if they can drain the cyst during pregnancy, but we'll see... If nothing else, it might get me a free peek at my little bean!

Those pesky cysts really do hurt....its more of an annoying type of pain...I get that all the time...
I got 3 ultrasounds during my pregnancy...I found out later though that insurance only pays for 1 and I was mad...lol It is cute to see the little "bean" Thats what it looks like, lol |

Hi Everyone!
I have PCOS and have been on Metformin for a while. I didn't notice any changes until I went back on Atkins, and within 6 weeks, I had lost 30 pounds, and I had my first period on my own (without provera) in 2 years!!! I am really excited because I think my body is really responding to the weightloss and diet. I hope I can get pregnant soon (never had children, been married for 6 years). Anyway, I just wanted to say HI! ![]() |

Hey Christina ![]() JMO, ask your Dr for the extended release Metformin. When I was first given metformin I couldn't handle the side effects (BAD diarrhea, gas, stomach pains) but the extended release pills aren't nearly as bad. You might not have those side effects, but just incase! |

Welcome Tiff!
We started at the same weight! I love being back on LC...I feel so much better...I have lost 7 pounds since July 3. I was on Met for a short period of time but could not deal with the diarrea...then I found out I was pregnant! So if you stick to LC, you most likely will be able to get pregnant...it worked for me twice! Have a great day everyone! |

WOW, this thread is suddenly very active again! I'm glad to see it
![]() I don't really have anything to report on the PCOS front, except my Dr. took me off my Metformin once I hit 10 weeks, and it was weird! I've been faithfully taking my Met for 2.5 years, and to all of the sudden stop was actually kindof hard for me! But everything I have read says that you don't need to stay on Met during pregnancy, and most Dr's take you off by the second trimester, which for me starts next week! YAY! Anyway, WELCOME to all you new ladies! Feel free to ask any questions, and good luck as you find what works best in your battle with our lovely friend, PCOS ![]()

hey!
![]() I just found this thread and wanted to join. I have PCOS and take Met every day. I found that taking it before bed is the best way for me. We have triplet girls that are 21 months old, and recently have started talking about possibly having one more. We are scared though cause the girls were really a clomid surprise Whooda thunk it? Apparently when I do ovulate I make up for lost time ![]() Anyway, I have found such great support in my eating areas on this site, so I am VERY glad to see this topic and meet all of you!

Christina- Good luck at your Drs appt!!!
Wendalina- WOW! I have a question about Clomid. My dermatologist said that the worst acne they had ever seen was caused by Clomid. Did you have that experience? KrystaLyn- CONGRATS! TWINS!!!! That is so awesome!!!! I was worried that I would get pregnant while taking Metformin and it would cause problems, and then my new endocrinologist told me that she would actually KEEP ME ON IT for the first 10 weeks because it can prevent MC's in PCOS patients. Now I am feeling better about taking it! Choco- Hey! Congrats to you too!!! Did you stay LC while pregnant? I have been wondering about that. Nice to "meet" all of you!

Tiff: I know you didn't ask me, but I'm never shy to share my views...
![]() I'm pregnant now, and wanted to stay LC with the exception of lots of extra veggies (carrots, corn, peas, potatoes) and fruits. I wanted to stay natural and get out of ketosis. Well, the only thing I actually WANT to eat is cereal. Sometimes, I can't STAND to eat meat, and veggies make me want to barf. SO, I'm not doing LC during this pregnancy. I hope that during the second trimester, my food aversions will subside and I can return to a healthier diet. You can see the results of this diet change in my signature. Not bad, I don't think! My pre-pregnancy weight (5/31) is the lowest I've been since, like, high school I think. My avi was taken at 209, so I'm about the same size now, but I think my face looks a little thinner now. Note: I experienced a LONG stall right before I got pregnant, maybe for about 6-8 weeks. I stayed on the LC plan, but didn't take my carbs super low. I decided to let my body "settle" after such rapid weight loss, and that's when I got pregnant! ![]() Last edited by Nik : 07-08-2008 at 06:13 AM. |

Hi all!
Went to my OBGYN appt today and this is what I found out: He does think I have PCOS...he is doing a CT scan on me Monday..to check my ovaries. When he checked my ovaries they are inflamed and the left is bigger than the right. He did put me slow release metformin..500 mg 1 time after supper meal and also a fluid pill...Aldactone 25 mg 2 times a day..he also said for a couple of months that for me to use the Nova Ring until we get this PCOS under control. I go back to him in 2 weeks. I really hope this works so maybe I can get pregnant again in the future. Need to get this PCOS under control and hope that the Metformin helps me lose more weight. HUGS Christina |

I did not do low carb while i was pregnant....When I could keep someting down....it was not meat..lol...or eggs.... I too wanted cereal all the time...I could eat it all day....I had a thing for lemon while I was pregnant...lemon anything! I didnt eat very much when I was pregant. The first 4 months I lost 12 pounds and then when I started eating I gained back 26....not bad.
