Way too much time on my hands!
|
posting to subscribed. I was diagnoised with bad LDL levels (259). My doctor didn't tell me what my LDL verses HDL and Tri readings were. I just called his office to get all my numbers. I'm going to order another test (plan to go into his office fasting before blood is drawn). I never had a problem before and lost almost 75lbs on Atkins. Now since I've gained 45lbs I have high cholesterol
I'm a little worried, but wont stress to much, not until after another test is performed. My doctor put me on Vytorin. I took about 3 doses thus far. I really don't want to take them at all. Anyways, all the information here is VERY helpful. Sharon, thanks for starting this thread.

Blabbermouth!!!

I would NOT be taking any meds. Your HDL is more than ok, it's great and so are your triglycerides AND your LDL isn't even that high.
I would talk to your doctor again, talk to him about ratios. |

I really don't understand the concern here. Most of you who have posted their numbers here have EXCELLENT lipid profiles, yet you are freaking out.
A low triglyceride reading indicates that your LDL is of the favorable kind, and so is GOOD for you, despite appearing too "high". High HDL is GOOD for you. Cut the fat out, especially the saturated fat, and your HDL will drop, and that is BAD. Look at your triglyceride numbers, and look at your cholesterol RATIO only. You people have excellent ratios: DON'T MESS WITH IT!!! |

I've been lowcarbing for months, and recently went for a blood test.
Results of my cholesterol was 5.5, I was told this was high, my mum's were 6.0 and she on tablets for it. My doc has insisted on a very low fat diet for 3 months and then to be re tested. I don't want to do low fat, but my hubby is scared of anything happening to me.He really wants me to do this. I have bought the cereal that is advertised to lower cholesterol and have bought soya milk. Do you think if I have this in the morning and for lunch eat maybe a tuna (oil drained) and salad, small hand full of seeds as a snack and chicken and veg for my supper. Drinks, only water and maybe berrys and a little double cream as a treat. Any knowledgeable person on here think this may help? Any advice appreciated. And I cannot persuade hubby that this way of life (Attkins) is the best, he goes with what the doctors say. |

MAJOR LCF POSTER!

Meekness
I'm on Vytorin also. Have been awhile. My LDL(bad) was 160. HDL 40 . I know the HDL is pretty good, but my understanding the LDL is high & thickening in the arteries which did alarm me. I really want to get it down quickly. My mother died of a heartattack & my brother has had a heartattack, so I'm willing to take med's to get it down. . My overall cholestrol was 219, not that bad I didn't think. Just the LDL bad. |

cathy, with your results and your family history I'd be running to the drug store. You're too young to be having those high results. JMHO

This is the first post of several that I put in this thread back on 10/13/05.
Both my doctors and I stand by it. Most of the cholesterol we find in our blood is produced by our liver, not from ingesting it. Quote:

Oh and Cathy,

As for your lipid panel, I have to find a metric conversion table. You must be from Canada or Great Britain. Oh and here is a good read on "Know Your Fats" WAPF: Know Your Fats Last edited by LoveMontana : 05-28-2008 at 03:29 PM. |

We all differ on this. I would check out some reparable sites like the Mayo clinic, WebMD, American Heart assoc. etc. Do your research if you're really concerned. You'll get some different opinions on a board like this one for asking serious questions.

Yes we do all differ on this so do your research and read everything you can find on the subject.
