Almost passed out at work.

I would really like to know if anyone has experienced this or has read anything about it.

At work last night, I suddenly started seeing these white fuzzy things and felt weak. I tried to shake it but I simply felt off. I then started getting light headed and had to sit down. It still didn't help, and neither did some grilled chicken and salad. I tried water with no success. I eventually gave in and cheated on the diet. I mean I cheated horribly (pizza slice and 2 cookies) and as much as it sucked to cheat, I physically felt better within 15 minutes of cheating. I have felt fine from there on out. I went up over a lb, but I truly believe my body needed the food/carbs/starches/whatever.

Two weeks ago, I felt off and saw white fuzzy things, but I was at home and ended up taking a nap instead. I woke up with clear vision but still felt weak. I didn't cheat that time, but it took a couple of days to shake the off/weak feeling.

Has this happened to anyone else? What would be the cause of this random, and quick acting symptom? What is a better way to handle it if I am not at home if/when it happens again? I obviously don't want to resort to cheating if I experience this again, but honestly had no idea of what else to do since I was at work.

I am not diabetic, not allergic to anything, no change in sleep/water/meds/food/etc, and did nothing out of the ordinary either day.

I started the diet back in January but was using HCG Activator pills from GNC. I switched over to the real HCG products back around Feb 9 (give or take a couple of days, I am not in the room where everything is written down). This has only happened those two times.

Thanks!

Sounds like low blood sugar and i believe 2 teaspoons of sugar is recommended in P&I. I had one day where i almost fainted in the shower when i was on P2. I didn't eat anything when it happened but i did feel week most of the day.

I remembered reading something about having sugar, but since I was at work there was no plain sugar available to me. I tried having the two sugar cookies first, which helped some, but I really felt better after adding in the slice of pepperoni pizza on top of it. I was lucky that we had some cookies laying around from earlier that day (we had cookies that we were handing out to customers) and that we were staffed enough for me to leave the store and get a slice of pizza from the restaurant next door.

As long as I'm in ketosis, whether it's on Atkins or HCG, I am weak. I get very dizzy when I stand up too quick. The worst was one night when I got up off the couch and went up the two steps to the kitchen. My vision went black, I heard this really loud whooshing sound in my ears like a waterfall, and then I dropped like a ton of bricks to the floor. I didn't actually lose consciousness, I could feel the cold lino under me, but it was absolutely terrifying because my legs and arms wouldn't work and I couldn't see or hear.

This has NEVER happened since, because I will never forget to take my potassium supplement again. :)

yep i realized i was late for work, ran to get in the shower and think it was just too much movement too quickly! Black spots (no white fuzzies for me) and the whooshing i knew it was coming so quickly got out and sat down...didn't need a fall in the shower to add to my day, although that would have gotten me out of work for the day to use as an excuse!

So what does the potassium do?

Any advice as to what to do if this ever happens at work again?

I have to take potassium supplements from my primary care dr. on or off Atkins and now on hCG RX shots. I am also watching my blood pressure daily I was told the hCG can lower the blood pressure too. Not medical advice just my experience, if you feel dizzy again at work or anywhere sounds like blood work and your blood pressure should be checked.

What does potassium actually do? Does it keep blood sugar in line or something?

manders 03-04-2013 10:33 AM

Potassium is an electrolyte, which means it has the energy to help our hearts pump properly. So if your potassium gets low, your heart will not have sufficient energy to pump blood to supply all your organs and thus your organs and muscles will not receive enough oxygen. That's where you get the dizziness and fainting. It sounds pretty scary, and it is. Don't mess around with a potassium deficiency. It will also help keep you from getting cold while low-carbing (which gets really extreme for me). Low blood sugar and low potassium are two completely separate issues.

Thank you for explaining it to me. I am clueless about supplements, vitamins, etc...:dunno:

but it is something that should be checked by a doctor, while low potassium can cause the things manders esaid and also muscle cramps, these can also be caused by HIGH potassium and rather than having blood pumping too slowly high potassium can cause muscle cramps and that includes the heart muscle causing heart attack. I once ate spinach the night before a blood test, didn't know how high in potassium it was but it skewed my tests and they were worried about too high potassium and asked me to redo the tests

Interesting. I had no idea what potassium prevents or causes

A healthy persons kidneys will filter out excess potassium.

This exact thing happened to me during my first attempt and I sat down and ate a normal meal. After an hour there was no change so my dd gave me a couple pieces of candy and within 20 mins I felt normal. The problem that happened is that my blood sugar def bottomed out. And inevitably, I went off the protocol for good, until this new attempt. I had great concerns about the potency of the drops.

So this time I am taking the rx hcg, eating all of my foods no matter if I feel like it or not, and if it happens again, P&I says to take 2 t sugar directly. He didn't flinch over the need for white sugar. So I hope you feel better and not let it destroy all of your hard work like I did!

Good luck to you!

PS Remember that our goal is to keep our bodies in perfect balance hormonally. So if 2 t. of sugar is needed to do that, it is not cheating. :)

in the future i will leave responses to the experts

I am late coming in here, just reading all the threads- but I have this happen both on and off the diet and we've narrowed it down to needing more protein. I found a protein juice at GNC that tastes like gatorade but it's just protein and that helps, or a tablespoon of peanut butter also works wonders. I used to keep a bag of bite sized Snickers in the cabinet for emergency crashes. We thought it was blood sugar but we had it tested and that was fine.
Maybe keep an extra ounce or two of grilled chicken in the fridge to grab in an emergency?

Thanks for the advice!
