Is the HCG diet tough on the kidneys?

I'm on day 29 using the Intermountain Pellets and have lost 18lbs. I've been pretty strict w protocol and have really tried to eat as healthy as possible, meaning grass fead organic beef, organic chicken, and veggies and no processed food. I don't eat the melba toast. I've been doing the detox baths and skin brushing. I have only had a little hunger... Maybe 2 days I felt true hunger and was white knuckling a bit, but other than that felt great. I drink mineral water and seltzer and tea with liquid stevia. Starting yesterday I started to get discomfort in my kidneys. I'm going to make an appt with the doctor but I was wondering if anyone has had any kidney issues while doing this diet. I googled it and did find that it could be a side effect but as I know from Atkins, the media will say anything when a diet is anything other than a weight watchers type of plan. I want to go into the doctor knowing "something" so she doesn't just try to get me to go off, unless that's really what I should do. My plan is to do this for 10 more days. Any thoughts?

No, nothing doing with kidneys for me. I have been doing this protocol for a long time (my first round was about 3 years ago) and have had no kidney issues. I do KNOW that this protocol is diuretic and I am in the bathroom all the time, but other than peeing a lot, nope nothing else is going on there. Pain could be anything, just tell your doc you are doing a detox diet and don't mention the pellets as it may bias her. Like you said, most docs will tell you that it is the hcg without knowing ANYTHING about it. Tell her your food (not amounts) and she might just be pleased!! And it could be that you are experiencing some type of detox, so hopefully nothing but detox is going on. How much water are you drinking? Make sure you are getting enough. I drink somewhere in the range of 100 oz a day.

Oh, and don't think that I am any kind of expert on kidneys. Just giving my thoughts. If you look up detox symptoms, maybe kidney pain will be there. You would be surprised how many thinks are caused by detoxing. I would think a detox is tough on the liver, but don't know about the kidneys.

I think you have done well, so IF she suggests going off P2, you can go right into P3 and stabilize. You have lost a lot of weight, done enough days of P2, so you are good there. Then come back after the appropriate time--3 weeks of P3 and at least 3 weeks of P4.

Congratulations on losing 18 lbs!!! That is great!!!

Dawn, thanks so much for the feedback. I'm feeling better now. Just lasted about 2 or 3 days. Maybe it was part of the detox like you said.

I can't imagine that my Naturopath would prescribe the hcg diet for me if it was dangerous to the kidneys. Naturopaths tend to be very focused on kidney health.

I'm not a doctor but I thought kidney trouble came from high protein diets? My vote is for detox also
