Color my hair or not? Will it mess me up?
Friends, I'm looking for input. I'm following WLA instructions but this one point I may need to rebel. Robin says not to color your hair while on protocol. I'm going away to a conference where people haven't seen me in a year and half I used to attend monthly or every other month. I want to look good, and my gray growing out is not what I consider looking good. Soooo. . . what do ya think? Will coloring my hair mess me up on my P2?

I've done it and no loss for that day... this goes for bleaching as well as color

ETA: I do my own...basic coloring...no highlights, etc. |

I'm gonna say it's ok.. at least for me. Hopefully, you too.. |
I had my hair highlighted near the beginning of P2 and still lost the next day.
|
I would go for it! I have never had any problems with it concerning losses.

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones lol! Or maybe a cooincedence?

Okay ladies, thanks. I was getting upset that I didn't color my hair prior to this round. I was experimenting with Henna cause it's supposed to be healthier for your hair and scalp. Does anyone out there use Henna for their hair, and is that okay? At least I think from most of you having good results I can at least color my hair. This sounds funny but my dh colors my hair. He's really great at it. It's not his profession, he's a carpenter/contractor but his artistic skills and precision really work well. He's also frugal :D

I would not use henna unless you are set on becoming a redhead permanently. The saying is, "You don't date henna, you marry it."
You can find henna mixes that say they will color your hair brown, blond, black and they very well may. Pure henna only colors red. Unfortunately most of those mixes contain metallic salts that can combine with previous color deposits in your hair and you will end up with a lovely shade of green. All that being said, I used henna for about a decade on my hair and it was probably the best thing I did for it. Gorgeous color and shine. I quite frankly got tired of the application mess and decided to grow out my grey. Henna does not notmally fade - I had to grow it out and cut the henna out gradually. If you do use henna, please use body art quality henna to make sure you are getting pure stuff with no metallic salts. No one really wants green hair! |

I say, to h3ll with the scale the next day, and go for it!
These people have not seen the 'new' you yet right? I see your stats :jumpjoy: Celebrate your awesomeness and color your hair, wear something that you look great in and enjoy their faces when they see you! |

My honest professional opinion is that there's a reason hair stylists exist, and if colouring your hair at home was something you should do, then hair stylists would merely be hair cutters. Henna can actually be VERY bad for your hair. And not that you would perm it, but if you did perm you hair after henna, it would literally all burn off. It causes some insane chemical reaction. I'm not saying not to colour your hair, but if you're going to do it at home, use a L'oreal box brand. They're probably the best. Better yet, get it done professionally! Also, keep in mind that your hair is dead, and it's not really the colour that does the most damage, it's how you treat your hair after. /rant. :D |

Test it first on hair from your brush though, to see if it reacts to whatever color you had on it before. It can have a bad reaction to color with metals in it. The store where I get mine has black and red. Body art quality. hennaforhair.com has lots of recipes to help tone down the red. |

No, I just use the powder henna. It's in a bag. I buy it at the middle eastern grocery store. hennaforhair.com is just a website with lots of good info. Your gray hair will be red no matter what. I used to mix it with coffee, which gave me a nice auburn. I use red wine now, because it makes it brighter.

I personally had a client come into my salon who had henna'd her hair and it was the most awful thing I have ever seen. Her poor hair was damaged beyond belief, and she looked, quite frankly, ridiculous. Her eyebrows were brown and she wanted me to match them to her hair. Uh... I don't have orange tint! Please don't use Henna on your hair ladies. :aprayer: |
I've used it for years! It's the only red that doesn't fade. I love it.

We have had over 70 years of innovation in the modern beauty industry. To assume that we haven't come far enough to develop gentle hair colours is absolutely silly. Don't try to fix what isn't broken. Time after time I see clients blame stylists for causing their hair to break due to processing, when really it's the client who didn't understand that they must take proper care of their hair at home. There's a reason we retail different products than the drug store sells. There's a reason we're more expensive.
And that's my rant. :D |

Manders, I hear what you're saying. But, I do have my stylists blessing with this. I have a lot of gray hair. Reds DO fade. Gray is HARD to cover. I'm not an every six weeks at the shop kind of girl, and I had to do something different. This is a close up of my hair now. http://i48.tinypic.com/ou6s2f.jpg |
Tiffany - I'd say about 90% of the time, it's a disaster, however your hair looks to be a nice shade and if it works for you then that's good to hear.

Adeline, I apologize for the major thread jack. :o
